Author of Sarah, They're Coming for You

During summer vacation, some years ago, a friend and I drove from south Florida to Vermont. Heading north bound on I-95 we enjoyed companionable silence along with the pre-dawn open road. The tranquility of the pitch black starry sky, and deserted highway made for a most relaxing trip.

About an hour due north of Palm Beach County, content riding shot-gun, I leisurely glanced out my passenger side window. I thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful ambiance, delighted at the sheer lack of traffic. Moving my purse from lap to the floor mat beside me, I bent slightly forward, tilting my head to the right maintaining a steady gaze of the countryside. I gently placed my bag beside my feet. Without warning, I jumped up in my seat, as far as the restraining seat belt allowed. My scream, indicating, shock and utter surprise broke the silence in the car. . Staring back at me, like a mirror image, his head tilted slightly in alignment with my position, was the face of an Amish man. As we locked eyes, he politely nodded at me with a slight smile. Although I have seen ghosts my entire life, the rational side of me assumed he must be driving in the lane next to us, until I realized there were no other vehicles on the road!

“Do you see him?” I asked my friend, who shares my supernatural gift of seeing ghosts. “Not really, I have my eyes on the road,” she answered.

“He looks like an Amish guy or maybe Quaker .Definitely not Quaker. He said he doesn’t want to be confused with the face on the oatmeal box.” I responded.

Before I could mention to my companion his name was Vernon, he moved from outside my passenger window to the backseat of our car. Vernon was not a woeful earthbound spirit, but had successfully crossed over at the time of his death circa early 19th century. He was a guardian angel, intent on our safe arrival in Vermont. Vernon was a chatty fellow, stayed with us the entire trip to Vermont, accompanying us to the historic Norwich Inn.

Vernon was a wonderful traveling companion, quite chatty unlike many ghosts. To this day, I fondly remember Vernon. He was so warm and friendly, I felt as if he were a live person rather than a two hundred year old ghost!
