BLOG TOUR: Shore Excursion by Marie Moore

Hi there!

Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers….the place to be when you’re in the mood for some pure unadulterated BOOKISH fun. To feed your need to read, today we play host to a blog tour courtesy of Tribute Books Blog Tours and featuring a good old fashioned mystery. Okay, so it’s not so old-fashioned as it is actual mystery, but it is good nonetheless. With something to feed both the eye and the mind, let’s jump right in with both feet, shall we? Today’s blog tour guest and book of choice is….

A Sidney Marsh Murder Mystery
By
Marie Moore

From the Tribute Books Blog Tours….
Travel agents are a vanishing breed, but Sidney Marsh, a New York transplant from Mississippi, is holding her ground--at least on land. She is the tour leader on a cruise through Scandinavia for a group of eccentric senior citizens who call themselves the High Steppers. Sidney expects her days to be filled with long meals, shopping expeditions and visits to museums, churches and fjords. But this cruise is anything but routine. There is a killer on board, targeting the High Steppers and quite possibly herself.

After the first suspicious death, the captain and his crew are grimly determined to carry on as usual. Disgusted with their inaction, Sidney decides to take matters into her own hands and launch her own investigation. She enlists the halfhearted help of her friend and business partner, the flamboyant and fun-loving Jay Wilson. Suspects abound. What about those two handsome young men who stay mysteriously aloof? One of them has his eye on Sidney. So does another passenger, far too charming and again too young to fit the "High Stepper" mold. Then there's Captain Vargos, the arrogant ladies' man whose plans to thwart Sidney's investigation might include seduction.

Who is that crew member shadowing Sidney? Is the theater really haunted? Even the High Steppers themselves are not as predictable or harmless as they seem. The closer Sydney gets to the truth, the less she understands. Shore Excursion is the first book in a new mystery series featuring amateur sleuth Sidney Marsh.

Sounds good, right? Perhaps the best sounding part of it right there, and something to note, is that it’s the first in a new series so we can look forward to further adventures with this sleuthing dynamo….or wanna be dynamo, as she kinda stumbles into a lot of the situations she lands in… ^_^. Now, before we delve deeper, let’s address the visual….how COOL is that cover?! I mean really, at first glance I wasn’t sure what to expect….Death Takes a Vacation…Death on the High Seas….Port-hole of Death….(HA!) So many ways it could go but one things for sure….the big D is going down in style with that red suitcase. To summarize, unusual combination but it TOTALLY works. Now back to the story…

Miss Sidney Marsh is a hoot. She’s spunky. She’s driven. She enjoys the simple things in life like traveling the world to exotic places while barely making her bills….ahh, yes….such is the life. Okay, so she sounds irresponsible but she’s not! She’s a travel agent (for you young readers out there…..those were - and are in some places - the people you could call with an idea for a trip and THEY would make all the reservations and arrangements FOR YOU….amazing, right?) and a darn good one at that; definitely better than she thinks she is, especially considering the circumstances. I mean really, it’s not everyday that your tour group gets picked off one by one by ….well, you get the picture. She handles things quite well when all is considered and her intuition never truly leads her astray….though she can be a bit TOO trusting at times, which leads to some interesting situations (think treed….as in up in an actual tree to escape someone or something).

Her partner in crime, so to speak, is the ever FABULOUS Jay…who’d rather eat at the free parties he’s invited to than go a week without spending his paycheck on designer clothes. Well, some like to live their best, and some like to look like they are anyway. No really, at heart he’s a sweetie and he’d do anything for his friends and his group, the High Steppers. Oh, wait….did I fail to mention these high rollers? Let’s correct that. The High Steppers are a group of travelers that happen to globe hop together. They book their tours, go on the expeditions, and travel the high seas in style, with winning attitudes…*cough*cough*. They’re an interesting group with personality to spare and I found the easiest way to keep them straight was the handy dandy who’s who list Sidney creates for herself; plus it makes it easier to both check off the victims and potential suspects. Now on to the story….

Author Marie Moore
 I often find books in the Mystery genre to be somewhat transparent, letting you easily guess who’s next on the “get them” list as well as who the perp is behind the acts. This story…some areas suffered the typical pitfalls but the big unveiling was kept mum and the twist at the end was a DEFINITE surprise, not to mention the laughs to be had. Brava Ms. Moore! Those facts alone were enough to propel my interest onward to the eagerly anticipated second installment….of which I’m holding a spot open on my wish list just for it. One more thing I noticed though was the attention to detail the author paid when painting the picture of the ports of call as well as the planned excursions, day tours, dining options, etcetera. It was almost as if a part of Sidney was gleaned from real life. Surprise surprise…it was. As it turns out, the author herself was a travel agent for over a decade thus the authentic touch of reality in her work. It transferred to fiction fairly well….but don’t be surprised if you come out a bit wiser for it. There’s some great tips here.

In short, a trip you wouldn’t want to miss with a cast and crew you won’t soon forget. The twists and turns, triumphs and stumbles, all add up to a grand reading adventure. The perfect read for your weekend getaway and a great place to look for inspiration the next time cabin fever gets a hold of you! Recommended for teen through adult readers….it’s good clean fun with a side of mayhem; easily handled by the age range mentioned. This book is scheduled to release on April 1st….for a few instant pre order choices, just click on one of the links below.

WAT!: Socialpunk by Monica Leonelle

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the site that aims to feed your need to read every day of the week.  Today, I was going to go the easy route with a Roving Reader post but then I made the mistake (however fortunate) of reading my email and TADA....a need for this post was born.  How so?  Well, you see there's this new YA book out this week that I JUST learned about that many of YOU just might be curious to find out more that also happens to be going on tour in April. But I'm getting ahead of myself...allow me to introduce you to my bookish find because really....

WAT!

The WAT! MEME stands for 'What A Tease!'.  It exists to showcase those samplers and book excerpts that you've read and wish to highlight to some degree on your site...yet you have not had the chance to read the entire book for a review....thus, the "tease" aspect.  Have you run into this problem as well?  Feel free to "borrow" this MEME and post away!
Now on to today's feature...

by
Monica Leonelle

After playing God for six years with the world he created, he couldn’t control any of his subjects, none at all. Over the years, he had watched them evolve and become the sum of their own choices rather than the sum of his; and for that, he regretted ever giving them life....

Read the full excerpt here....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sounds dark and creepy, right?  Well, sorta.  Curious is more how I would describe it.  If one continues to read the excerpt, which I of course did, you discover that his experiment is about to have the plug pulled on it, ending all the work he's done....and all the lives he's created, for better or worse.  There's one person yet to be added to the mix that comes as a shocker (yes, I know...a shock even at this early stage in the game but it's pretty interesting!) and should definitely add some moral dilemmas if not hope to escape the end that seems to be intent on wiping them out....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Final thoughts...what a tease!
The novel is labeled as YA cyberpunk....a sub genre I'm not certain I've actually read before, but this one may change all that....and suggested for fans of Ender's Game, Neuromancer, and The Hunger Games....
Have I read any of those?  Nope....not even the last one and still somehow this one is sticking with me.  Go figure.  Adding to the wish list for now but be sure to stay tuned to the blogosphere for more news on the upcoming tour!  There's LOTS of fun to be had...trust me...I've read all about it.  ^_^

In the mean time, feel free to check out the rest of the prologue excerpt via the author's site

Special thanks to author Monica Leonelle for the heads up on this book.  (THANKS!)  For more information about the author and this new trilogy (yep, this is the first of three!), feel free to check out her website, stay up to date on GoodReads or pick up a copy of your own over on Amazon or through your other retail outlet of choice.

So...questions?  Comments?  Thoughts?
Is there something YOU'VE been teased with as of late?
Feel free to share any and all...
*grabs wish list and pen*

Until next time...happy reading!

No two are ever the same...

Well hi there everyone; fancy seeing you here on a day like today.  The sun is shining, the birds are singing….it looks like the world is getting ready for spring.  *glances out….non-existent window* Oh wait…I forgot, job one doesn’t actually HAVE any windows to the outside world….guess it’s good I have an active imagination then!  ^_^

Before we get started on today’s post of bookishness, a quick reminder that there are TWO contests currently running on the site.  One gives you a chance to win a fab YA novel you have to read to believe….and the other has a SET (that’s right...SIX BOOKS) up for grabs that make up a YA Scifi series that sounds pretty interesting (book one is on my TBR shelf) so before you miss out on either potential read of greatness, check out the right hand side bar under “Current Contests” for more details.  Now, back to the books….or rather a different book….

If you stopped by yesterday, than you know of one book birthday that occurred this week….today is celebration number two.  It’s a curious read I’ll give you that and one that I battled with off and on…the end result?  Surprising indeed.  Ready to read all about it?  Grab your sweater, hoodie, heck even your warmest parka….you’re gonna need it where we’re going.  Today’s book of choice is….

From the publisher….
The oceans stopped working before Willo was born, so the world of ice and snow is all he's ever known. He lives with his family deep in the wilderness, far from the government's controlling grasp. Willo's survival skills are put to the test when he arrives home one day to find his family gone. It could be the government; it could be scavengers--all Willo knows is he has to find refuge and his family. It is a journey that will take him into the city he's always avoided, with a girl who needs his help more than he knows.

Okay, so just prior to writing this, I went virtually traipsing over to the publisher’s site to gather the synopsis seen above and happened upon a little question answer session with the author (quite revealing, especially when it comes to where the idea for the story came from…) as well as a review or two.  As a habit, I avoid looking (fully at least) at reviews of books that I’M about to read/review so as to go into the work with a clear mind.  No worries, the reviews didn’t taint my share here but it did show me a similarity between our experiences even with the briefest of glances (promise…I did not click “more”, just saw the first couple of lines).  That instance of sameness?  The narrator’s voice…or rather the hard time we had with it.

Willo is a young lad with a lack of formal schooling due to the times he finds himself born into and from that as well as perhaps his surroundings (he lives in the mountains, far from many other families and cultural experiences), the language he uses and his manner of speaking is rather hard to step into.  Really…I was at the point several times where I was on the verge of abandoning the book (for a little while, I’ve never really written off any book I’ve started) simply because of the excessive drag his dialogue (with himself) was creating.  It’s thick like molasses and twice as hard to traverse….in short, not one to select as your next “read aloud” book unless you REALLY like a challenge.  HOWEVER, I did persevere and though I was ready to completely wash my hands of this experience….in the end, I found myself unwilling.  It wasn’t a complete 180 but it was enough of a turn to realize that although the character before me was a trial in some ways, his story as well as the stories of those surrounding him, were meant to be heard.

In general, it tackles a time when (from my perspective) the world has been used and abused by mankind causing Mother Nature to fight back in an effort to purge our destruction from her mass.  The skies cloud over, rivers no longer run nor the seas, and the forecast is for a seemingly unending barrage of snow (ever marvel at how beautiful and pristine the world looks when blanketed with the frozen white stuff?).  Those in the cities have their hands full despite access to the basic “necessities” of life (the quotation marks there will explain themselves momentarily) with the heavy hand of the government upon them and an oppressive aura that seems to feel every nook and cranny with its darkness.  Those outside the city aren’t in for a walk in the park either as the hand of the law is long reaching….but there are those living further beyond that reach that while not making mansions out of mole hills are surviving and quite well.

You see, though the story is filled with a quest, a secret mission, and a lot of cat and mouse; the real story underneath it all is about that survival and just what it means to each of us.  Is it the mansions, the furs, the formal meals and the like that keep us happy?  Or perhaps is it something more basic like family, friends, a roof over our heads, a meal shared, and the chance to put our creativity to use, to work with our own hands?  Something to think about, especially in this “everything-must-be-plugged-in” sorta world we live in and are heading further and further into.  I mean, I love my PC, smartphone, MP3 player and such as much as the rest….but….there are times when unplugging (as I call it) is so very therapeutic and provides that much needed rest from the busy world outside.  When was the last time you went for a walk….just a walk…without the music player in hand/pocket?  Can you remember ever having a day or even a few hours to yourself and choosing to grab a paper copy of your favorite book to read outside in the sunshine under a nice shady tree?  Even the not so obvious choice of making a meal instead of driving through the closest fast food joint, allow us to get back in touch with our more basic selves.

All in all, the story is as unique as the snowflakes that aid in the titles creation…one of a kind…not always appealing, but a work of art nonetheless.  A much deeper read than I thought it would be with an ending that will both surprise and come as no surprise as the pieces finally come together.  Due to the harshness of the world created, readers would do well to note that there is violence and foul language in the novel…but not to excess.  Remember, it’s a story of survival…so the descriptions can (and probably will) get too much for some younger readers; recommended for those in their mid-teens through adults as it is just as much at home in the older realm….I wouldn’t be surprised to even find that it’s audience (though aimed at 12 & up) turns out to BE mostly adults, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing either especially with the message it conveys.

I see you....

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers….the place to be when you’re on the hunt for your next read.  It’s time to break out the party hats because we have several authors and their latest works celebrating their bookish birthdays today, however as I am only one person and I don’t REALLY like to clutter the site with TOO many reviews in one day, we’re celebrating them one at a time.  Sound good?  Sure hope so….the way I see it, we’re simply extending the celebration.  Anywho, back on topic here….

Today we are celebrating the book birthday of a novel you can’t help but see…and it, or rather the main character, definitely sees you.  Can’t you feel it?  Someone is watching your…every….step…but not in a malicious way, because really….they just want to be friends.  *-*  Ready to discover this book birthday celebrant?  Here we go.  Today’s book of choice is…..

From the publisher
Sophomore Cammie Bliss has long been labeled a stalker by her peers, but when a cute new boy named Toby arrives at her small town high school, Cammie has a chance to be "normal." Trouble is, she can't really help herself and she's up to her old tricks of "intense observation and following" pretty quick. Making things worse, her younger brother is dating one of the most popular girls in the school, her parents have separated, and her dad has begun to watch their house most nights. Cammie has simply got to figure out why she behaves the way she does, and end it once and for all.

I really really REALLY wanted to like this one.  No, really!  The cover with all its bubble gum pink fun, the “cutesy” pink binoculars that could only belong to our stalker-ish friend, and the combination of ransom note and curly font used for the title…it was all screaming read me read me read me….we can be the BEST of friends…please?  Unfortunately, the reality wasn’t quite what I anticipated.

Now you know how I roll here (Ha!  Sorry, still sounds funny for me to even me typing that phrase…^_^), EVERY book has some merit no matter how much or how little the journey was enjoyed, after all they are someone’s pride and joy….and this one is no exception.  Aside from the attention grabbing points mentioned above, I really enjoyed a few of the side characters.  Toby for instance is somewhat along the strong silent type, the reasons for which we learn later on, but his aloof nature and random appearances make him interesting to follow (no…not stalk, follow as in piece together his character profile).  Rosie, Cammie’s best and tolerating-of-her-habit friend is a lesson in balance.  While she tries to manage her hearts desires with that of the actions expected by her religious parents, she walks the line so many dutiful daughters face with her head held high.

Let us not forget Mr. Mendez, her English teacher and staff in charge of the school papers, The Quill and The Gazette.  He encourages all his students to become better writers and express themselves to their full abilities….at least those with an ear predisposed to listen…but with Cammie, there’s something more.  He suggests a tactic to address her status with the student body that could be both beneficial or become one of those blow-up-in-your-face moments she’d rather forget.  Does she follow through?  What was the outcome if so?  Sorry, can’t say…you’ll have to read it to find out…but I will say that of the adults encountered, he’s the one that shows the most interest in his student’s well-being.  Speaking of adults….let’s talk about parents….

We briefly touched on Rosie’s duo but haven’t addressed Cammie’s situation.  Her home life certainly fits the description of a “situation” and I must say that when looking at it apart from the rest of the story, it serves as a well played plot point that will resonant with many young readers.  Simply put…they’re having trouble in paradise that may (or may not) result in a separation or far worse….it’s not a point often dealt with in Children’s or Young Adult literature, but I think the way it was carried out here along with the resulting fall out was rather well done.  It’s hard for kids at any age dealing with the potential breakdown of their family structure, but it’s good for them to see that although things may end up different than before….they will still be loved, cared for, and most importantly, to not blame themselves.  Now on to the not-so-good-for-me parts….

I could never really connect with the narrator, one Cammie Bliss.  Was it because she had this obsession with stalking people til they either broke down and confronted her, ignored her into boredom or became uninteresting to pursue?  Ummm, I’m not certain.  I mean, I’ve never done it nor had any friends who had but I don’t think experiences reflecting what the character is or was doing is the sticking point; if it was, no fantasy, paranormal or magical tale would stand a chance (unless you’ve ACTUALLY gone to distant worlds, seen a vampire in person or cast a spell….. *-*   *blink*….perhaps those are best kept to yourself….*whistles*).  I think for my perspective she was trying so hard to unknowingly find herself or a way to fit in with everyone else, she made herself inaccessible.  Might that have been the point when considering the ending?  Maybe…but it took away from the reading adventure for this reader.

All in all, not a bad story, just one to go into with your eyes wide open.  Consider the main character as a magnifying glass….she’ll show you the hidden details she uncovers about those around her til she eventually is burned like so many little ants in the sun (poor ants!).  Eventually her questioning gaze is turned upon herself thanks to a severe intervention from those who truly care (not who you might think either), but even so it’s one day at a time; certainly a good tale to warn those guilty of this habit to go cold turkey in a hurry.

Taste Testing Tuesdays

Good morning (or whatever time it is where you are), everyone!
Welcome to another installment of Taste Testing Tuesdays here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers!  Taste Testing Tuesdays was inspired by 'Teaser Tuesdays', a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading

On the menu this week...a book I just started reading last night and even from the first few pages, it sounds like it's gonne be GOOD.  Ready for a spooky, creepy, heck-of-a-good, you-should-add-to-your-to-read-list teaser?  Here goes!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I looked at his limbs, nothing more than matchsticks, the whites of his eyes so bright they seemed to light up the entire room.  The thought that he was still in my head somewhere, still alive after everything they had done to me, made my stomach churn.
Ooohh....now I REALLY want to know who is is talking about....*curious*.
From everything I've heard, this installation of the series only adds to its overall "greatness"....which is not easily done as a series continues to grow.  Can't wait to get further along in the book and see just what happens next.  This book was released in paperback recently so go ahead, grab yourself a copy...but be sure to read BOOK 1 first!  Reviews of all read thus far, coming soon.....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
*Grab your current read
*Open to a random page
*Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
*Share the title & author, too, so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

In My Shopping Bag

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren.
Through her guidelines, your post does not actually have to be named the same and thus my post shall be..."In My Shopping Bag".  (just fits with the "foodie" theme a bit better in my humble opinion)

Let's take a peek inside my shopping bag this week....

Now see this was a selection for both myself and dear old Mom.  I got her hooked on the author's ESCAPE FROM FURNACE series (which she's almost completed!) and she was thirsty for more.  Needless to say I'll have to pry them out of her hands to sneak a peek but trust me...I will at some point.  ^_^  ALSO...he has a new book in the works coming out this May on the UK side of things...stay tuned for more on that...

FUN NOTE:  Due to her affection for his work, she had requested as an upcoming present a SIGNED copy of one of his books.  Unbeknownst to me when this was ordered....book 2 arrived as a SIGNED copy!  *score*  Who-hoo!

BLOG TOUR: The Galahad series comes to an end...

Hi there!
Welcome back to the place that never takes a weekend off (well, not fully anyway or from books)....Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today we play host to a blog tour celebrating the final installment of a Young Adult that recently made its way into the literary world. What's that you say? Why haven't you heard about the first five novels? Oh, well that's simple....I hadn't either so of course I couldn't share what I didn't know, but from what I've been told, though connected they work as stand alone reads too. You won't have to worry about THAT though. (hehe....keep reading.....)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The series....the Galahad series.
(Sounds all sorts of mysterious, right?)
The book that started it all.....The Comet's Curse (which I'll be reviewing later this year). Here's a look at how it all began....
From the publisher...
When the tail of the comet Bhaktul flicks through the Earth’s atmosphere, deadly particles are left in its wake. Suddenly, mankind is confronted with a virus that devastates the adult population. Only those under the age of eighteen seem to be immune. Desperate to save humanity, a renowned scientist proposes a bold plan: to create a ship that will carry a crew of 251 teenagers to a home in a distant solar system. Two years later, the Galahad and its crew—none over the age of sixteen—is launched.
Two years of training have prepared the crew for the challenges of space travel. But soon after departing Earth, they discover that a saboteur is hiding on the Galahad! Faced with escalating acts of vandalism and terrorized by threatening messages, sixteen-year-old Triana Martell and her council soon realize that the stowaway will do anything to ensure that the Galahad never reaches its destination. The teens must find a way to neutralize their enemy. For if their mission fails, it will mean the end of the human race….
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now, the book we're here to celebrate and that brings it all to a grand finale....The Galahad Legacy.

From the publisher...
Council leader Triana Martell has returned from her journey through the mysterious wormhole, but she isn’t alone. She is accompanied by the ambassador of an alien race—the Dollovit.

While the Council and crew of Galahad struggle to come to terms with the existence of the Dollovit, the ship begins to flounder. The radiation shields threaten to fail, damaged by the appearance of multiple wormholes. The Dollovit have a proposal for the crew: an offer of assistance that could be their only hope for survival. But their offer comes with an astronomical price. Beset with doubts and surrounded by danger, can Triana and her crew find a way to reach their destination—a new home for the human race?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sounds good, right?
I thought so, and that's coming from someone who doesn't usually do a lot of Scifi reading. As part of the tour, I was granted TWO privileges which I now get to extend to you. First, a special excerpt from the final book that if you've been following the tour should fall right into place with all you've learned so far. Ready for the sneak peek? Here goes....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

SPECIAL EXCERPTThe Galahad Legacy

He mumbled an uh-huh, then took a seat at the table. “Of course I’m dying to know what happened to you, but I guess I’ll wait for the others.”

There was another uncomfortable silence. Triana wrestled with what to say next, but was spared when Lita and Channy walked in together. Both girls wasted no time in hugging the Council Leader.

“I’ll start with this hug, but then I want you to turn around so I can kick you squarely on your tush,” Channy said with a mock frown.

“Sleep okay?” Lita said. “Any new aches or pains this morning?”

“Nothing new. I was telling Gap that things seem a little scattered, but I’ll catch up.”

*Please visit The Readiacs for the next excerpt from the second chapter of The Galahad Legacy. *
