Barclay Publicity presents... LONE STAR BLUES by Delores Fossen - EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're joining Barclay Publicity for a stop along their current tour featuring the latest release by none other than Delores Fossen.  Recognize the name?  Well, you most certainly should as I've featured her work previously here on the site and seeing as this new addition is to the Wrangler's Creek series, you can bet your best bonnet it's on my wish list for a purchase and a read!  😉  Alas, my current schedule didn't allow it's inclusion for that enjoyable venture, but the hounds of you-know-where couldn't keep me from shining the spotlight on the very least (as in, there is MORE bookish fun here than a simple spotlight)!  Ladies and gents, but mostly ladies, let's give a warm welcome to today's title in the spotlight...

Lone Star Blues
Wrangler Creek series
Delores Fossen
Print: 9781335631992
Digital:  B075JH8W58

About the book...
Wrangler’s Creek’s most eligible bad boy has just become its most eligible single dad.

Dylan Granger could always count on his rebellious-cowboy charm to get his way—until the day his wife, Jordan, left him and joined the military. The realization that during a wild night he got her cousin pregnant is shocking enough. But the news that Jordan has come home to Texas to help raise the baby is the last thing he expects.

Raising a baby with Dylan in Wrangler’s Creek is a life Jordan might’ve had years ago, but she doesn’t want regrets. She wants what’s best for the child—and to find out if there’s something deeper between her and her ex than blazing-hot chemistry. Getting closer means letting down her guard to Dylan again, but will he be able to accept the emotional scars on her heart?

Downing some more coffee, Dylan headed off the porch and toward the large detached garage for another vehicle. However, before he could even make it there, he saw something sparkly on the stone path. A silver purse that was smaller and flatter than the palm of his hand. It had some chew marks on it and was wet, possibly from dog slobber.
Since this likely belonged to the naked woman, he opened it to see if he could find her ID. And there it was—her driver’s license along with a credit card and some lipstick. There was also one of those stupid Dylan Granger Sex Bingo cards folded up inside.
Thankfully, it was blank.
He pulled out the license and looked at her birth date first. She was twenty-six. Way too young for him but at least she was legal. Then he read the name, and his stomach went to his ankles. Because it was Misty Turley, the same last name as the judge who was pissed at him. And with the way his morning was going, Dylan seriously doubted that was a coincidence. No, this was likely another of his daughters. One younger than Melanie.
Maybe he could send Walter Ray a whole case of scotch.
Dylan didn’t know exactly how many daughters the judge actually had. Walter Ray had gotten divorced years ago, and when his ex-wife had moved away, the girls only visited Wrangler’s Creek every now and then. Or at least that had been the case until Melanie had moved back after she’d finished college.
He picked up the purse so he could take it back inside and add it to the pile of clothes. Since the identity of the naked woman was bad news number five, that had to mean he was good to go at least for the rest of the day.
Or not.
Dylan heard the sound of an engine right before he saw the cop car pull up in front of the house. It wasn’t the local cops, either. The cruiser had San Antonio Police on the door.
A tall, lanky man in uniform stepped out. “I’m looking for Dylan Granger,” he said, and he flashed his badge.
Hell. What now? Had Walter Ray sent someone to look for his daughter?
“I’m Dylan Granger.” He tucked the purse in his back pocket and walked toward the cop. “Is there a problem?”
The cop didn’t answer. He just motioned to someone inside the cruiser, and a moment later, a gray-haired woman stepped out. She wasn’t alone. She was gripping the hand of a little boy who couldn’t have been more than two or three years old.
Dylan silently repeated that—hell, what now?
“You need to sign for him,” the woman said. She had some papers in her left hand, and she started toward Dylan, pulling the little boy with her.
Dylan shook his head. “Why do I need to sign? And who is he?”
The woman smiled as if there was something to smile about. “Well, Mr. Granger, according to this paper, this precious little boy is your son.”

His lips kiss me back, angrily. He’s so forceful, it hurts my mouth, but I won’t stop, and I slide my tongue through his lips to shock him. His mouth opens and his tongue reaches for mine, reaches past mine, and I don’t know if it’s angry or…hungry.
I fight for my balance. My hand is still on the back of his head and I grip the ends of his short hair. He moves toward me until I’m backed into the trunk of the nearest tree. The bark scratches through my cotton shirt, but I can barely feel it. The heat of his chest against mine is extraordinary—his hips shift against mine, his lips and tongue and whole face devour my mouth, my face, my ear, my neck.
And the worst part? I don’t want him to stop. I desperately don’t want him to stop.
But I need control here.
My free hand slides around his waist, gripping his shirt. Both of his hands reach into my hair. He grasps it at the roots and lets out a breathy groan as he turns his face to a new angle on my neck. He’s done this before. He’s probably done this many times before. The whole length of his body pushes me harder against the bark of the tree. It’s all I can do to keep breathing, to not slide my hands all over him. I ball my fist behind his head and notice how totally still I’ve become. He’s devouring me and I can’t stop him. I’m his paralyzed prey, and it freaks the shit out of me.
All at once, I pull back, put all my power behind my right arm, and knock my fist into the side of his jaw. Being so close, I hardly have any force behind it, but it still hurts like hell and I shake out my hand angrily.
“What the hell was that?” he says, stumbling back from me, and then leaning forward and cupping his jaw. He clears his throat harshly.
In that second one thing is clear: He still has complete control over himself. He’s not caught up in this at all, though, by the looks of things, I at least put him in a little bit of pain.
He tilts his head up so we can look at each other. Except he doesn’t look at me, and I wonder if that’s another power move. He scowls, looking into the distance like he’s thinking it over and his hand moves from his jaw to his lips. He clears his throat again. It occurs to me maybe that wasn’t his first beer. Maybe he’s messed up. Did he even know what he was doing or how he was talking to me? What do they call it—liquid courage?
Welcome back, Control. Sorry I let you go for a few minutes there, but it won’t happen again.
Eli’s eyes widen, and at first I think I’ve said the words out loud. But his hand moves down to his throat, grips around it, and something looks wrong.
“I didn’t hit you that hard,” I say.
He clears his throat yet again and grips harder like he’s choking.
“Are you…OK?” It’s not like I’ve done a whole lot of drinking or drugs, and I’ve certainly never OD’d or anything, but the dude wasn’t even slurring. I look from side to side, and no one is within yelling distance, especially over the loud music.
Eli’s free hand fumbles to his belt, to that navy blue pencil case. I stand there looking at it. If he wants to show me what kind of drugs he’s on, I still won’t know how to help him.
He fumbles with the zipper, and finally it rips open and a cylinder of some sort springs out into the overgrown grass and oak leaves. He falls to his knees and rummages frantically with his hands.
“What? What do you need?” I yell at him.
He whimpers and says something I can’t hear. I drop down to get closer. “Nuts. Peanuts,” he chokes out, and I can still taste the remnant of my peanut butter cup in the back of my teeth.
I stare at him and all of a sudden the pieces click into place.

No way. Nobody’s this allergic to peanuts. Are they?

He leaned against the kitchen entrance, his own half-eaten sandwich in hand, watching her. “Are you going to avoid me all day?”
She stiffened. She was the New Yorker, used to being direct and dealing with people who got in her face. Yet when Noah did it, it unnerved her. “I’m not avoiding you.” Her pitch was a half-step high, the trait of a liar.
“We’ve got to talk about last night.”
She smacked her bread together and turned to face him, using her sandwich as a shield. She straightened her pose, planted her feet apart, and hoped the Wonder Woman stance would give her Amazonian strength. “Last night was a mistake.”
His dark-blue eyes flashed with a determination that told her he disagreed. Her stomach clenched, and the strength she sought eluded her. Instead she stood there, too frightened to move and too weak to stop where they were going.
He came up on her slowly, as if he knew she’d spook and scatter at any sudden movement. He reached out and tucked one blond curl behind her ear. His fingers skimmed her skin. Goose bumps blossomed down her neck, her spine, to her toenails.
“And it won’t happen again,” she said with as much conviction as she could muster. “End of discussion.” Her voice squeaked, again betraying her, though no worse than the rest of her body.
He leaned in until his lips were inches from hers. Her breathing hitched. She should have put some distance between them, acres of distance, but her feet stuck to the floor. Her eyes flickered to his lips. They’d been so soft last night and were so close right now. One little taste wouldn’t hurt, would it? She reflexively licked hers.
He moved in. His breath trailed her cheek, and his lips hovered at the edge of her jaw, just below her earlobe. She arched her neck back, giving him more access, then shivered, closed her eyes, and waited to feel his lips on her neck.
Instead, his breath fanned her ear. “Liar,” he whispered. Then he was gone.

Lend Me Your Ears: It's a DOUBLE Audiobook Review!

HI there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Image result for audiobook

So, today marks a first as I am sharing my thoughts on a recent AUDIOBOOK I finished...make that, two.  Shocked?  I know I was and while I won't be converting to the format anytime soon (sorry, the narrator in my head RULES!), I DID in fact enjoy the stories themselves, and appreciate the additional venue for "reading" to take place.  I mean, it's not safe to read and drive, right?  (JK!)  Anywho, back to the stories at hand...first up, a ghost of a tale...

John Bladek & Davonna Juroe
Read by
Matt Godfrey

About the book...
Will Larson has one last chance to save his stagnant career as an architect: design a grand restoration for a long-abandoned abbey. Looming above the breathtaking, windswept coast of Maine, Winterbay Abbey offers a picturesque spot for a charming hotel. But the locals harbor a peculiar distaste for the ruined Gothic convent.

After witnessing a drowning within sight of the abbey, Will wonders why the police seem disinterested in the case. He begins looking deeper into the incident, gradually uncovering chilling secrets behind the old nunnery’s walls. Will’s wife, Emily, becomes convinced the drowning is a ghostly replay of a past tragedy. But their investigation into the abbey’s frightening history soon becomes a desperate struggle to escape Winterbay’s dark curse.

So, I actually listened to this one on thanks to a win with the author (sweet!).  We started off on a high note, getting to know our lead characters, and diving head first into the history of Winterbay from the locals.  Let's just say that "colorful" doesn't do it justice.  From a convent to a home for wayward girls to the severely creepy shell that remains today, aside from the location having a great (and dangerous!)'s beyond me why anyone would want to set foot there.  Certainly not Will Larson, especially after everything he learns AND experiences.

We are shown echoes of the past as Will explores the Abbey for all its worth.  He's trying his best to secure a good life for both himself and his growing family, but while he's plagued by his own missteps, these new intrusions are seriously making him question his sanity.  Strange additions to his drawings, mysterious blankets with a rather familiar signature, figures on the beach calling out  Revenge?  Justice?  Just WHY was he the one reached out to?  Was there no other soul to connect with that would understand the strangeness of what was going on...the lingering hurt from generations of bad deeds done in the name of good?  There was much to puzzle and several leaps of imagination to take as the story twists and turns, binding you to its bones like so much cement in a foundation.  I will admit that the seagulls outside my work totally had me flashing back to the Abbey and not in the most pleasant of ways after having finished a fairly precarious scene before having to pause things and head into work.  *-*

In the end, though certainly not in a format I favor, the story itself was definitely a winner! If you're a fan of gothic horror or simply love a good spooky story, this one's for you.  The characters are memorable for so many reasons and the perilous nature of everything as it currently stands will keep you on the edge of your seat.  Try to guess along the way just how things will turn out...and even if you're a stickler for details thinking you might rival the great Holmes himself, I bet you don't see everything coming.

Now, our second venture into audio land takes us back to another place, another time, and a totally different type of story.  I've actually reviewed the book here on my site, but when the audio version came out, the author asked if I'd like a listen.  Considering the type of story, I was game and I wasn't disappointed either...

Jake G. Panda

About the book...
Listen up! This is not your garden variety audiobook. Recorded in Jungle Stereo, this audio adventure follows Jake G. Panda, famed wildlife investigator, on a globe trotting mystery that is a throwback to old time radio serials. When trouble calls, Jake is always there to answer the phone.

This hilarious audio installment of THE ENDANGERED FILES is a wild and woolly tale involving a missing guest, a green bird, and a bunch of double-crossing critters. It's designed to introduce young readers to the subject of endangered species in a fun and informative way.

As I'm not one to rehash the details, you can read about my adventure through the pages for the thrill ride my ears took while listening to this one, I gotta say, it was a win!  Again, SO NOT AN AUDIOBOOK PERSON...but this story, the style it's written in, the genre it claims, the fact that it's more fiction than reality (don't tell the panda!) lends itself a certain permission, if you will, to play with the voices, and be as dramatic as possible.  Even when I was reading, I found myself reading aloud, doing alterations to my own voice for the various characters, and affecting a Bogart-esque way of speaking when in Jake's shows...err, paw the liberties the author took in utilizing those same variances to bring it to life audibly, worked wonders.  I can easily see audiobook fans digging into this one as well as it being a rather stimulating story time "read" for a group or classroom setting.
