Hi there!

Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers....the place to be for bookish fun in its many formats. What's that? Curious about the many formats comment? Aww, I knew I couldn't get anything passed you guys... ^_^

I've seen posts around the blogsphere featuring book versus movie discussions and I think most of us can agree, the book is almost always better than the movie....almost. It's the inclusion of that one little word that sparks so much conversation and it seems that there's been a slew of books-turned-movies being released (and coming soon) as of late. With my penchant for chilling out with a good book, I share my experience....but what of my somewhat equal (OK, slightly less but still they get high marks) love of movies? I mean the popcorn alone (with extra butter and a diet coke, please!) is enough of a reason to go but add to that an hour or two of visual entertainment and BAM...a fairly good winning combo.

So, not to step on any virtual toes as this post was inspired by all those that came before me, bit this post will pop up from time to time when the viewing was fresh and the source was bookish. Speaking of which, today's feature film just so happens to fit the bill for discussion...nice coincidence, huh? ^_^

ONE FOR THE MONEY

Based on the first book of the lengthy and ever growing Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich...this was my first exposure to both the character and the author. Now, a few truths to share....

1. I've heard from a few friends that the book series is great.
2. The previews looked interesting enough...and starring Katherine Heigl was a plus (I generally like her movies...good actress for the roles she chooses).

Those factors taken into account and I was on my way to the movies. Having watched the 2 hour or so flick, I can add a few more truths as I see them to my list.

3. Stephanie Plum is an interesting girl....probably be fun to know her in real life.
4. The movie was good...but felt drawn out. Made the flow of the story seem REALLY slow.
5. The guy who played Morelli (probably spelled wrong...sorry!) was a cutie... ^_^…as was Ranger but um, yeah...lose the name.
6. This is one book I'll be adding to the future read list.

Yep. Despite the small drawback mentioned, I think in book format it'd go over nice and easy....kind of like that egg breakfast Morelli made for her. Doubtful it would suffer the same stagnant feel of the movie what with the shorter length of the books, making each installment that much easier to jump to.

Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the place to be when you simply need a bookish break in your day and nothing more; well, almost nothing. ^_^ We've done a review or two so far this week, and introduced you to a new work from an author dedicated to helping children be the best that they can be (with contest!), so today, we're taking a mini-break and re-introducing a MEME of my own creation that doesn't get to see the fair light of a bloggy day all that often to present you with a recent release because really....

WAT!

The WAT! MEME stands for 'What A Tease!'. It exists to showcase those samplers and book excerpts that you've read and wish to highlight to some degree on your site...yet you have not had the chance to read the entire book for a review....thus, the "tease" aspect. Have you run into this problem as well? Feel free to "borrow" this MEME and post away!

And through it all, he's pretending to have no interest in sports, which Helen claims to abhor. As things heat up with Helen, the questions arise: Will Johnny finally get the girl? And, if he's successful in that pursuit, who will he be now that he's no longer really himself? THE BRO-MAGNET is a rollicking comedic novel about what one man is willing to give up for the sake of love.

Odd choice for a female reader?

Not really.

Consider it the male equivalent to a beloved chick-lit/chick flick favorite, Bridget Jones Diary. After reading the sample (30+ pages!), the first thought that popped into my head is....wow, so THIS is what happened to Bridget Jones' brother...if she had one! No really! It's as coarse and as brash as the works mentioned; full of that down trodden and yet persevering spirit we love. It's the other side of the proverbial coin in the world of relationships or lack thereof....and an interesting perspective to view things through (did I mention funny? Yep...definitely funny!).

Final thoughts...what a tease!

Will it make it into my reading rotation? Only time will tell....but if the preview is any indication, this should certainly be one to watch for. Curious to find out more? Check out the extended sample on Amazon...but be warned teeny readers, I'm recommending this one for older teens through adults only.

Didn’t think you’d encounter that with the title of today’s post, now did you? Uh-huh…but you see my friends, bullying comes in many shapes and sizes…even the overly pink variety. One of the many things I love about this author's work is her continued dedication to address those issues that are uncomfortable for children (of any age really) in a non-threatening storybook form thus allowing them not only the enjoyment of reading but also the chance to learn a valuable life lesson in a welcoming environment. One of her biggest focuses….bullying in its many forms. What, you didn't think it was merely that kid that's 3x bigger than you demanding your lunch money now did you? In today's world, we not only have to worry about in your face obvious bullying, but cyber bullies, family bullies, and those not-so-obvious ones. This book takes a look at the later pink-clad and often unintentional variety.

Sami and Stella are best friends...excuse me, were best friends...until Jasmine moved into the neighborhood. She was a friendly enough girl simply looking for a place to fit in...but Sami wanted none of it. In her mind, two was fine, but "three's a crowd". Her Mom suggested she give Jasmine a chance but from the look on Sami's face...I don't think that chance is coming anytime soon (gotta love those expressive illustrations). What follows is your typical bout of jealousy and acting out but also the potential ruination of not only a friendship by the possibility of one. It’s not like Sami set out to purposely make Jasmine feel like an outcast…she simply wasn’t thinking about the feelings of those outside of her self. However “innocently” done though, it’s still a form of bullying and one that hurts just as much as any other.

Wow...in that context, how can that NOT be seen as bullying? Brings a whole new shade of ugly to the phrase, you know? I mean, sure you say it in jest sometimes to your friends but if you really think about it, it could seriously hurt some feelings. Having a best friend is a wonderful thing, but making room for one more is even more special. Why? For the simple fact that you're helping someone else find their place in the world, making them feel welcome in otherwise foreign surroundings. We're all the "new" kid at some point or another (been there, done that MANY times). Remember how you felt standing in front of your class on the first day of school, introducing yourself to a room full of strangers. Wasn't it easier when someone made the effort to reach out to you? It's not a situation that's exclusive to children though....bullying (though it's rarely called that in the adult world) is still bullying at any age and that "welcoming party" is a happy moment indeed when encountered in a new city, at your new job, or even out on the town.

If we make an effort to be more open, friendlier to our fellow man no matter our age....imagine the world we could live in. No more children afraid to go to the bus stop in the morning. No more teens seeking out gangs for protection from other gangs. No more adults committing crimes on a grand scale simply for revenge against the slights they felt were perpetrated against them. A peaceful future to say the least...but in order to get there one day, we have to take the first steps TODAY.

Recommended read for all ages with a message good for one and all. The delightful illustrations will enchant the eye while the story speaks to the heart. Speaking of that story….the author also included suggestions for role-playing with your children to better help them understand why Sami’s actions are inappropriate, how it could have been handled better and additional material to be explored online to aid in building their character. A well rounded package of goodwill from this author’s heart to yours….I’d say that’s one reading experience I’d like to share with the world. Thanks to the author…I have a way to spread the message even further…

I couldn't agree more...and with wonderful phrases like this scattered throughout the book, I'd say this one does more than simply entertain; it empowers. Add to this the "Treasure Tips" at the end of each chapter and you have one great combination that's sure to speak to young readers round the world. This started out for me as a "roving reader" find once upon a time and now I'm digging for buried treasure along with the kids from the story. A journey into imagination like no other....

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of....oh, wait a second. Wrong channel. Hehe. ^_^

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers....the place to be bookishly delighted any day of the week....despite the health of this reader. Oye! This cold....if it doesn't go-away-never-come-again-another-day soon, ugh. I swear...one of these times I'm going to blow my nose and my brain is just going to PLOP...come right out with everything else. *grabs new box of tissues* Anywho, enough about my mucus-fest though I know you're enraptured by it all (hehe), let's dive into today's post.

The featured titled is the first of a trilogy, the rest of which is still to be published....but even if it was left to sit by its lonesome for some time (not that I want that...I REALLY want book 2 pronto!), the spotlight it seeks, it most certainly deserves. It's an adventure. It's a journey. It holds a little piece of us all within its grasp and dangles it just outside of arm's reach to tantalize us some more. It can be categorized as (older) Children's Fiction or Young Adult but no matter what label you slap on it, it still remains one of a kind (unless you're looking at the images at the top of this post...then it's two of a kind with its little cover war...the black one is the final one I believe). Don't you just LOVE the name? Works so well with all our notions of the Sand Man and everything...not the scary one, the one that helps you sleep....

I did say there was a lot of playtime with the words and names didn't I? *checks back* Yep, sure did. The Inn Between is literally an inn...between the land he's travelled through and the ground he must cover if he is to make it to the academy. Oh, but don't let that term fool you. It isn't an actual academy in the classic sense of the world...more of a place where those that dare dream are locked away until they are either successfully a blank slate for life, willing to do as they are told and only that, never hoping for, dreaming of, or wishing for anything more....or simply remain. Okay, perhaps "remain" is too nice of a word here....umm, how about they simply live out their days locked away from the world and those they love dear so they can not infect the masses with their lingering sparks? Yeah....that's a little better.

Yep. That pretty much says it all. I thoroughly enjoyed this bookish romp through a land devoid of imagination and yet created by it. It's a conundrum all its own but one you'll gladly and willingly step into.

Author Edward Medina

From the moment you set foot in the saloon (opening sequence) to the moment you face the Darke (anyone have a flashlight?), you'll be swimming in a literary world that could have only been created by someone with a great love for all things creative.....and it certainly shows.

The characters are many and hauntingly memorable. Some shrink in size once their true nature is discovered while others will tower over like the giants their wills make them. The land itself is breath taking as one scene melts into another altogether different and yet the same on some level. It's a magical journey that explores the best and worst that imagination has to offer...and one that if you haven't had the chance to experience just yet....I strongly suggest you do.

Hi there readers!

Welcome back to the site that aims to please your bookish tastes from A-Z...Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers. Just what are those A-Z tastes? Hmm, that's a list for another day. ^_^

If you know me (and I think some of you do by now), you knew I couldn't stay away for long. Why? Oh let me count the ways! There are so many great books to share. Reading is a passion. Blogging is a similar passion though NOT AS intense (*hugs book*)....and all of you! That's right. All of my bloggy, bookish, and non-bookish friends out there that make it a point to stop by and say "hi", leave a comment or well-wishing thought, or simply read what I've shared. The friendliness of the blogging community is wonderful and I'm certainly glad to be a part of it. ~tear~ _tissue_ *ahem* Moving forward....

To answer a few questions, yes...I'm still under the weather. Yes, I send my thanks for all your kindness as my family treads the uncertain surgical-type waters ahead. Yes, I'll still be reading and blogging and making the most of those crazy lemons. Oh and yes, there's still a contest going on here at the site you should enter if you have a second (^_^). Last but certainly not least, YES there is moer to today's post than all of this...hehe....

Today...we're getting a little old-fashioned, a little classical literarily speaking but in a purely HERE AND NOW way. It's a soon-to-be-released work by a new-to-me author that seeks to join the ranks of the many in the more recent wave of Jane Austen inspired works. What's that? You've never heard of her? *blink*

Just kidding...or rather I know YOU are just kidding because there's simply no way that you could miss all the Darcy this and Darcy this, Jane here and Jane there that's been released in the past year or two. It's an all out craze...and that my friends is what I pondered when approached by today's featured author. You see, I'm not opposed to it all though not a fan by true fan standards but I can't help but wonder what moves an author to add themselves to the masses in a case such as this. So...author Alyssa Goodnight came calling with her new book Austen-tatious (releasing from Kensington Books, January 31st, 2012)...and I....I asked. Curious to see what she had to say? Read on my friends...read on....

Latest work, Austen-tatious releasing January 31st, 2012

Question: What are YOUR thoughts on the "all things Austen" craze in literature in recent times?

Whether you're a fan or not, it is impossible to deny that Jane Austen has captured the hearts, minds, and attention of today's readers and authors. Her six novels, and to a lesser degree, her journals and letters, not to mention the BBC, Hollywood (and Bollywood) adaptations of her work, have garnered her legions of new fans nearly two hundred years after her death. Her work has inspired countless retellings, continuations, and spin-offs, and not only the historical sort. The slate of Austen-inspired works to be released in 2012 include my own novel, AUSTENTATIOUS, in which Jane herself takes a starring role as a modern-day fairy godmother; Nina Benneton's COMPULSIVELY MR. DARCY, in which Dr. Elizabeth Bennet mistakenly assumes Fitzwilliam Darcy and Charles Bingley are a couple; Shannon Hale's MIDNIGHT IN AUSTENLAND, which chronicles a woman's Austen-inspired experience at a country house; Kim Izzo's THE JANE AUSTEN MARRIAGE MANUAL, in which the heroine wonders if it might still be possible to marry for money; and Diana Peterfreund's FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS, a dystopian retelling of Persuasion. And there are plenty more, believe me.

I have my suspicions about the Austen craze, and naturally they begin with the fact that Jane Austen was an intelligent, eloquent, witty writer with a deep understanding of the human heart and mind, a clever sense of humor, and a thorough grasp of character. In her six published novels alone she has given us, as readers and writers--not to mention producers, actors, and directors--so very much to inspire us. Many readers will only ever read a single one of her works--most likely an assignment for a literature class. Odds are it will be her masterpiece Pride & Prejudice. Very few classics are as thoroughly readable as Pride & Prejudice. Reading it feels almost as if you're having a gossipy chat with a somewhat old-fashioned, perhaps slightly wordy by today's standards, acquaintance. (I can tell you I never once felt like chatting with Ishmael, Ahab, or the whale while reading Moby Dick.) The storyline is at once intriguing and relatable: you can't help but wonder whether Darcy will overcome his pride and Elizabeth her prejudice. (And you're not alone if you fall even a little bit in love with Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy...). Pride & Prejudice is, at its heart, a romance. It's a romance that doesn't dwell on life's hardships and tragedies, focusing instead on the vagaries and love and courtship. And still, it's considered a classic.

Many people will tell you that they don't read romances. And yet they love Jane Austen. Pride & Prejudice is the story of two people who meet and immediately dislike each other. As the story progresses, they come to know each other better, overcome their differences, and eventually fall in love. Sounds like a classic romance storyline to me... And her other five novels can be similarly categorized. I think Jane Austen eases the way for readers who might be resistant to the romance genre. They can content themselves with reading a classic. Or, if they've exhausted Jane's offerings, they can move on to the authors who've taken up their pens to continue or expand upon her stories--these novels have a literary bent--they're brushing elbows with the classics. It's the perfect compromise, and everyone's pleased, because who doesn't love a happy ending?

This may explain why so many are willing to give Jane Austen a try, but it does not explain by half why Jane has developed such a devoted, almost cultish following. I believe the reason for that is her characters. A good writer may write any sort of character, but Jane's legacy is six books chock full of wonderful, memorable characters. It is not only Mr. Darcy that we love in Pride & Prejudice...although we do love him. But so too do we love Elizabeth (wonderfully witty and self-possessed) and Jane (lovely and kind), Mr. & Mrs. Bennet (the hilarity is perfection), Mr. Collins (so preposterous!), Lady Catherine de Bourgh (what presumption!), Wickham and Lydia (unbelievable!), and all the rest. They are what makes the book. Without these characters the writing might still be wonderful, but it wouldn't capture us as it does. It wouldn't have us yearning to carry on the stories, to imagine new situations and predicaments for these characters, to hold on to Jane for just a little longer.

AUSTENTATIOUS is my imagining of what might happen if Jane was still hanging around, supernaturally speaking. If she wasn't quite done with romance yet. If she was actively interceding on the behalf of the romantically challenged in the form of a fairy godmother. Fairy Jane to be exact. The book also taps into the Darcy mystique--the idea of a sexy, yet unapproachable man who, against all odds, becomes the stuff of daydreams... AUSTENTATIOUS is, at its heart, a romance--I did learn from the master.

Oh so many ways to go with this one. From page one, it is apparant that the author has a particular fondness for nature. Rolling hills, running streams, wild horses...the works; all are beautifully detailed as we explore Joseph's hometown in Montana. When we meet this young man, we find a troubled soul trying to make sense of the oddities that life has thrown his way...his means of escape, karate. To say he was a black belt would lower his standings...that's how good he was; of course, that's what nightmares about fighting for one's life will do sometimes, push you in real life to be able to handle everything and anything. Unfortunately for Joseph, there is one "anything" he couldn't see coming which leads to a chance (or is it?) meeting, a terrible (and strange) accident, and the beginning of a journey that would last a lifetime.

Admittedly his meeting with Lahiri and the accident that followed, through me for a loop. His desire to warn him about the impending failure was admirable....but I was left wondering, why? Who was he to him? Why would he show up out of the blue JUST to tell him not to participate in the coming fight? Then we have the fatal meeting with a GIANT deer....okay ALMOST fatal, but really a GIANT deer. I couldn't see where the animal fit into the puzzle being revealed. Was it a means to meet an end? Sort of. It's briefly touched on later in the story (thank goodness) and the explanation given makes sense even if it's more philisopical.

Once Joseph is confined to the wheelchair (told you it was a BIG accident), his spirits are dampered....understandably. It takes an unexpected news broadcast about an unusual form of "treatment" to break him from his cycle of self-pity and restore his hope. Hope is a powerful thing; it can move mountains when necessary and in this case, send a lost soul across the globe in search of a new future. His experiences with the sage (who shall remain nameless because it would spoil the surprise if I revealed it here....suffice it to say that it's a familiar face) are intended to heal his body yes, but more importantly his spirit for when balance is achieved in both areas, the soul can be at peace.

There were only two drawbacks I experienced during my reading adventure; both small, both connected but both mentionable. First, I didn't always connect with Joseph and his family. It could be the confusion that was abundant in his life from the nightmares to the fight matches but I wasn't always able to stand beside him in his adventure. That being said, the second occurance was a little outburst around page 102. It's so unlike the Joseph we came to know, so out of character that it felt off. I understand he's in a foreign land seeking out an unsual means to conquer his limitations but it simply felt like another person altogether.

The final reveals are unexpected but allow the journey to come full circle. Does he find enlightenment? Does he ever walk again? Yes and yes but those simple answers will not give you the same satisfaction as following Joseph's journey will. Who knows? You may even discover something about yourself along the way. A strange and at times complex journey, but one that was worth taking. It's not a story to be rushed through despite the short length of the novel. It's a story to be read, felt, and pondered. There are a lot of aspects of India's culture covered within the pages and ideas that may be foreign to you and me but if anything, that just adds a little something extra to the overall story. You're exposed to a culture far removed from many of us and yet shown the common threads we share; a surprise for certain, but an enlightening experience nonetheless.

Recommended for teen readers through adult. On the menu this week...two books from the YA genre that couldn't be more different than one another and yet they both share an element of danger. Ready for a taste? Here it comes....

I looked into his eyes -- they seemed to be on fire, not with anger, but something else. Suddenly our lemonade memory discussion seemed a lot less important.

Read into that what you may, but rest assured there are some STRONG feelings bouncing around this one. Enjoying the general story, curious about the history of the characters as that hasn't quite been revealed yet...but there's also an aspect or two of Evie (our leading lady) that I'm not quit buying. Seeing as how I'm just approaching the mid point of the book....I'm keeping an open mind and enjoying the ride. Stay tuned...

A splashy sequel worth two fins up...

Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the place to get your bookish fix any day of the week. Today we're splashing back into a series via its second installment. Book one rocked...but book two blows it out of the water, so to speak. They are mermaids after all...well some of them anyway, but before this review swims ahead of itself, allow me to introduce it properly. Get your wetsuit and surfboard, it's time to check out the choice waves with today's featured title...

MARINA'S TALES, BOOK 2:
THE MOON AND THE TIDE

*WARNING - if you have not read book one, I suggest you do before diving into this book two. Though it could be read as a stand alone title, the character connections are just that much richer with the first "adventure" under your belt.*

We meet our friends just a short time after the last turn of the page. The excitement is high, the fashion jaw droppingly gorgeous, and the danger as real as ever. Marina's decision to have a life on land as well as at sea (temporarily at least) is about to have some serious consequences. Her love of surfing has grown...so much so that while she promises Ethan (her match made in heaven) that she will stay away from the water...especially her mermaid relatives....she just can't seem to help herself. The call of the wet and wild is too great and her desire to keep her promise leads to some dangerous nighttime activities. Ever dreamed of night surfing? Yeah...didn't think so...but that was Evie's solution to quenching her thirst so to speak and gaining that tranquility that a day on the water provided. Things were going well and Ethan was none the wiser...notice I said Ethan.

Although she may have thought her activities went unnoticed, they definitely were not. Someone was watching....waiting for just the right moment to set plans in motion so devious, so life threatening in every sense of the word..that I can't spill the beans on it here. Suffice it to say that Evie will have to call on all the powers her heritage has bestowed on her in order to escape the fate designed for her by someone else.

Sound complicated? Not really....but it adds another element of surprise and drama to the story that while unexpected, works well to keep readers on their toes. Just when you've settled in to a routine of sorts...BAM! You're sideswiped by the change of events. Good stuff indeed....now a few things to note beyond the greatness of the story....

I was right! (Oh come on...you know it's fun just to say that sometimes...) There IS something different about Evie, so be sure to pay attention for the big reveal. The revelation that there is an evil organization out to get Marina and her kind that doesn't involve the government is surprising....but just who makes up that group, even more so; again something to watch for because the details can get murky. Although Marina's personality is not manipulative or overtly flirty, it was nice to see her embracing her "talents"; she knew they'd provide the edge she needed to try and defeat the intentions of those around her...even if the results were a bit intense.

In short, a great follow up to the success that was book one (BETWEEN THE LAND AND THE SEA) and a series that Young Adult fans will want to make sure is on their radar. Marina's past may no longer be a complete mystery, but her future is still heavily veiled. She is unique in many ways and her relationship with land (Aptos sounds lovely), man (yoo-hoo...Ethan!), and sea is a rocky road at best; how it all fits into the big picture of things is gonna be interesting. Book three is definitely on my "to read" list...can't wait to continue the adventure and see what Marina's fate will be.

Recommended read for middle grade readers through adults. The PG13 nature of the writing keeps things even keel so it can be enjoyed by one and all. Think OUTSIDE the box...

Hi there!

Welcome back to the Friday edition of Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers....the place to be when you could use a little bookish inspiration to start your weekend off right. Today we step into the land of imagination but not in the most usual way. It's a children's storybook from OwlKids that is bound to get readers of all ages thinking outside the box...literally. Without further adieu, today's book of choice is....

MY THINK-A-MA-JINK

It's Jack's birthday and like all little children he's excited to see what presents his party will bring....or rather not. You see, like many kids today who start off with a cell phone in one hand and a tablet PC in the other, the thought of another bright and shiny do it all for you toy just isn't appealing. I mean really, there's something said for being grateful one received presents at all but really....how many new serving robots or fancy musics players does one actually need? Thank goodness for one last present his sister discovers he somehow missed at the party.... (The horror!) ...for inside is the key to the adventure of a lifetime.

So...what was in the box? Ah, that's the million dollar question now isn't it? You see, it was something and nothing all at once. It was worth its weight in gold though weightless; unable to be traded yet shareable. It's not what it held (for it DID contain something) but what it unleashed...the power of IMAGINATION.

With a brief note on how to use it, a few "magical" words (*ahem*..."THINK THINK THINK-A-MA-JINK HULLA-BA-LOO RAZZA-MA-DOO!") and an open mind, Jack and his sister Marie were off on adventures like no other. Ever imagine being a 40 story tall monster bent on destroying a city? Jack did. Or how about traveling to a time before humans and the wild things roamed the earth? Jack did. How about turning your brother into Princess Stinkerbell? Marie did that...hehe....but you see where this is heading. Their creativity was set free and even when a potential disaster to their fun strikes, the potent cocktail of their creative juices could not be stopped for they had discovered the true secret to the present received, the power of imagination.

It can't be boxed...for long. It can't grow old and disappear...it merely matures. It can't be taken away from you....unless you let it be. It's an intangible gift that everyone is granted, but not everyone uses....of which the thought alone scares me. Can you imagine a world without imagination? What current and future wonders would we miss out on if this one simple element of our genetic makeup was removed? Something to ponder, yes....but that's a world I wouldn't want to live in (anyone for a trip to the moon?).

Recommended reading for all ages from the tall to the small. There's not an imagination out there that can't appreciate the message here ...and if you factor in the wonder filled drawings, you've gained those last few stragglers on that far side of the room over there (...yep, I saw you. Welcome back to…well, you know where you are, or you should anyway…and if you don’t perhaps you need to step away from the computer. Away I say!

What’s with the snarkiness of today’s post? I know, I know…not my usual style, but neither is the book I’m featuring and well, let’s just say some of it can rub off on you (or rub you the wrong way…take your pick). Without further fanfare and whoop-de-doo-ing because really, who needs it? Today’s book of choice...selected work…printed protégé from an author who should have known better (but didn’t because hey, it’s funny AND it sells!)….

Irreverent Correspondences of an Evil Online Genius

*WARNING* All of today’s snarky remarks and slightly grayish humor should be taken with a grain of salt (or sugar if you prefer). They are intended to be made in good humor in light of the featured title and any offense caused to readers was unintended…unless you laughed, then THAT was intentional.*

Perhaps you’ve been to this author’s website before and witnessed his work first hand…than again, perhaps not. Hey, I don’t know what you do all day? To gain a little insight on him, in his own words (from the ARC back cover bio)…”..he reads too much, generally exceeds others’ tolerances, and listens to Linkin Park. He stays up too late, drinks too much coffee, smokes too much, hates getting up in the morning, and has offspring who thinks he doesn’t know what he has been up to when he deletes his Internet history.”

Yeah…that sounds about right…or at least it does once you’ve read his work. This is not a book to be taken seriously (hence the Humor genre in which it resides) but it is a book to be taken one sip at a time much like a dose of ill tasting medicine…you know it’s good for you, but it doesn’t change the fact that it can taste like the drippings from an oil pan. There are many topics covered within ranging from the benign to the OMG-you-did-not-just-write-about-that.

“Bill’s Guide to Everything on the Internet” is a condensed version of our multitude of social, search and shopping outlets with a penchant for the KISS method (stands for “Keep It Simple…Sally – well, in polite circles it is…) of description. Are they accurate? Some are (surprisingly) but mostly it’s just for kicks…or is it? (dun dun dunnnnn) Jetting forward some dozen pages we unearth “Ten Jobs I Would Rather Have Than Mine” that reveals the particular wonders of one day becoming a Fortune Cookie Writer (if you get a message from the future about a robot invasion in your next one…you know he met this aspiration) as well as a Forest Fire Lookout (though I’d be scared if he achieved this one…O-O), and everything in between (well not everything because then it would be called “A Million Jobs I’d Rather Have….”). Perhaps my favorite “conversation” in the collection is actually the first one you encounter about an overdue balance, an inability (or blatant refusal) to pay, and a drawing of a spider. LOL…I’m chuckling as I recall it right now…and getting strange looks from a passerby. *ahem*

Overall, a fun and funny filled read that I understood about 50% of the time…sorry, not everyone’s humor level revolves around a conversation about what type of monkey would be most useful. Yeahhhh. Scariest part? The introduction lists that the email conversations included…are all…verbatim. O-O I’ll let you digest that for a minute. *tick*tock*tick*tock* Might make you a little more wary the next time you send something out into the virtual black hole we call the Web. Anywho…recommended for older teens through adult readers. There is some questionable humor and offensive language, so it’s best to keep this one away from the kiddos. Just tell them the spider on the front will come to life if they touch it….

So the author's love of a beautiful landscape is obvious as is his tendency to describe things in vivid detail...but answer me this; who is Lahiri? What's with the GINORMOUS deer? The dreams...prophetic? I need answers! Hopefully they are forth coming as this is the book I'm speeding through currently. O-O...umm, yeah. I had actually won book 1 and an ARC of book 2 some time ago, so my cover is actually scarier looking than this one (if you can believe it). A tiny bookish break in your day...

Welcome back to another exciting week here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers….the place to bookishly celebrate the New Year every day of the week.

We're doing things a little different today as the featured title is a "little" different as well. Check out the book trailer below for a glimpse at the creative wonder we'll be exploring....

Today’s post may be tiny in stature but it’s big on content. It shows how much can be said with so very few words…and just how an accompanying pen and ink drawing can help to bring it all to life. In keeping with the spirit of the book, I’m aiming for a short post today (stop laughing…I can do it!). May I please introduce the book of choice? Thank you! Today's featured title is.….

Yes, that double take you just did WAS warranted as the “director” of the project is a famous actor (aka RegularJOE)…and yes, I said director. You see this unique little creation is a group effort in which stories submitted on their website are worked, tweaked and finalized to reveal the true splendor within. In other words, YOU can contribute, possibly be included in a future volume, and help other creative souls like yourself reach their full potential despite the miles between you. Pretty cool, right? I thought so.

From the wondrous packaging of the words to the illustrations lighting up each page with even more imagination, this is not merely a book but a work of art. Each page has some profound or amusing tale relayed in as few words as possible but always getting to the heart of the matter. My favorite? Hard pressed to narrow it down to merely one as so many will speak to you as you page your way through this one, however being the book fan that I am page 68 and 69 expressed the joy of a trip to the bookstore rather well. If I may quote….

“His hands were weak and shaking from carrying far too many books from the bookshop.
It was the best feeling.”

See? Add to that the included illustration of a young lad peering over same said stack and it’s irresistible. There’s hardly a page turned where a smile, thoughtful pause, or tear can’t be found. Don't believe me? Check out this two page spread of wonder...

...or perhaps for something a tad more sinister....

The mini-versions of the interior images included within the front and back covers add to the overall whimsy of the book and give readers something else to explore as they prepare to take a tiny trip to the land of the written word.

At book’s end, you are left with this parting phrase….

The universe is not made of atoms; it’s made of tiny stories.

How poetic and yet so very true. So I ask you readers...what will be your contribution to the tiny story you star in today? Whatever it may be, make it count.

Recommended read for all ages as some aspect of the work can be enjoyed by one and all. Little ones will enjoy the illustrations, older children the humor, adults the combination of both as well as the tiny details included within each. Welcome back to the Saturday edition of Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers ...the place you never know what you'll discover next but you can count on it being bookish.

Today's post features a title that to say the least...I've been struggling with the past week or so. Sad to say, but it's true. It's a YA book from a new author that takes two kids from differing backgrounds, adds in fame, misfortune, bad fashion choices and...well, it adds up to a whole lotta trouble. Let's get into shall we? Today's book of choice is...

A SONG APART

Shannon Kistler and Kevin Derow. Two teens seemingly world's apart that are about to find out it matters not how you got your start...its what you do with the chances you're given....or at least that's my best guess at the intended message. Allow me to explain my confusion...

Shannon seems like a likeable enough girl. Yes, she got some grand breaks in life and sure, some may be jealous that she rose to glory and fame so quickly but does she deserve to be hated by pretty much one and all? Not in my book and yet everyone has such a visceral reaction to her very presence you'd think she had typhoid or something. Same goes for her number one fan, Kevin.

Kevin is certainly not on the fast track to success or anything but to be beaten down (verbally and physically) by his friends, family and heck, even strangers he's merely passing on the street simply because his fashion sense may need some help? I'd say it's a bit extreme. I can't say I've ever run into that large a group of random people that would be in such an uproar over a shirt or one fans love of an artist. The reactions just didn't seem authentic given the situation or perhaps we're missing a needed back story to explain the vehemence felt.

In any case, the unlikely (yet plausible) meeting of these two wayward souls sets off a chain of events that both betters and worsens their respective lives. You'd think dating a celebrity would be all roses and sunshine but here it's anything but. The celebrity getting to spend time as a average Joe (or Susan as she is a she) allows for the human side of her to emerge from the media personality but not for a long enough time for you to really care about her.

On the positive side, I will say I enjoyed the author's quote at the beginning..."Enjoy a good challenge? Try being yourself. It's tougher than you think." Very true. Also, the lyrics included for Kevin's song are a perfect picture of his devotion to Shannon and the respect he has for her work. Lastly, the ending was a sweet (if not slightly predictable) success. I wasn't quite sure where it would all end up seeing as how the story was going in all directions...but I was hopeful and justly rewarded. Would a sequel be called for? Probably not although the ending allows for it should the author choose to pursue that avenue.

In summary, not my particular cup of tea but perhaps I simply missed some of the key ingredients in my reading of it. Everyone's perception of a story is different and if a kinship with the characters is felt, it gives the story greater merit. A potential read then for struggling artists out there looking for a glimpse inside the world of music and just how far a fans adoration can really take you.

Time for a bookish declaration....

Why hello there!

Nice to see you again (or for the first time should this be your first visit…^_^). So, how has week one of 2012 been treating you? Good I hope. If not, no worries…I hear ya and totally sympathize, but it’s too early to get on the “this-year-sucks” bandwagon just yet; give it some time (I know I’ll be).

So far this week, we’ve welcomed the new year, took a trip to Europe (literarily speaking), sampled a bookish tease or two, and discovered that the cutesy woodland creatures may not all be as nice on the inside as they are on the outside. Basically a whole lot of bookish fun…and there’s plenty more where that came from. Today’s post was an impromptu one inspired by another blogger who was inspired by a librarian who was inspired by…well, probably their love of reading, but I think you get the point…the circle of influence is HUGE and I plan on spreading it even more.

The post that inspired me I found through one of my Twitter friends (@roses7184 … I’m talking about you! ^_^). The site: Hopelessly Devoted Bibliophile….catchy name, right? It’s a lovely book blog that you really should check out when you have a moment (and follow, like, etc, etc)…and while today’s post was a fond remembrance to her, it was bright-shiny-new to me. It’s a little something called the….

Pretty nifty, huh?

I thought so.

Now it’s fine and dandy to post this little beauty but again taking my cue from HDB, I’m digging into our rights a little closer….for personality sake. ^_^ Here we go….

1. to read anything at any time

…and this is one I LIVE by! No seriously. With the limited time I have, and the voracious reading appetite I also claim as my own, reading time is at a premium. That;s why I always carry 1-2 books, my eReader, and my phone (with nifty reading app) with me at all times. Which leads me to the next “right”…

2. to read anywhere in any position

I don’t generally stand on my head or anything, so position wise it’s usually with my feet up or neatly tucked under me….but it is all about LOCATION. Again, time is a premium and there are SO MANY missed opportunities to read out there! Such as…waiting for my work PC dino to load a page, waiting for a doctor appointment, waiting to pick someone up, waiting for a movie to start…and even waiting in line at the grocery store (with the occasional read as I shop move too…multi-tasking is my middle name). All prime windows of time PERFECT for just a few pages more.

3. to read without intrusion

Oh brother…can I PLEASE blow this one up and post it at job 2? No seriously…if I’m on break with a book in one hand and eating my lunch with the other, making sounds of amazement about something you are unpacking or reading over just to draw my attention…so not cool. Dude…I’m reading! Leavez me alone…unless you want to discuss the book… ^_^

4. to move your lips while you read

So I’m probably guilty of this on occasion but more often I run into trouble with a smile or laugh inducing scene. I can’t help but let my reaction show which can lead to some fairly odd looks of concern from your fellow coworkers….

5. to read as slowly as you like

I do this on occasion, but it’s harder when you have a fairly active blog. The last one I TRULY took my time with…literally savored it over a month or two was my ARC of MATCHED by Ally Condie.

6. to read several books at one time

This describes me to a T! It’s not just about accomplishing more reading because really, you can’t read any more pages with two titles running than one but it does serve the fickle side of my personality. One never knows what you’ll be in the mood for and as variety is the spice of life, I like to keep my options open.

7. to underline favorite passages

Okay…so I DON’T do this one, but I have been known to make use of my semi-extensive sticky note collection to mark a page and write on the note what part I was taken by. My books = my precious (ß say that with a Gollum accent and you’ll understand…)

8. to ignore literary critics

To be honest, I read what they say (as well as other bloggers), but it is not the determining factor as to whether I read a book or not. For example, I’m probably one of the only people left on the planet not taken in by The Hunger Games craze. *ducks flying objects* I’m not dissing the series…I haven’t even read it at this point (though I did purchase book 1 a few weeks back), but I am saying that when I read about it even in light of the hoopla, I wasn’t taken in by it. Every book, every series hits readers differently, that’s why there is SO much room for SO many different books. No two experiences will be exactly the same just as the interest level between two people in the same title will vary. Will I eventually fall in love with the series and join the masses? Who knows? But right now, I’m cool with being the “outcast” so to speak….

9. to skip pages or chapters

Um, no…while I respect the right to do this…I don’t skip chapters. The closest I come to this is skimming. I will certainly skim if a book is dragging its feet and I need to move it along to the “good stuff”…but it’s rare and only for small bouts.

10. to read the last chapter first

…and yet another one I don’t do. I do have the bad habit (hey, at least I recognize it!) of turning to see how many pages a book has and accidentally catching a glimpse of a few words on the final page. It may not seem like much but it can cause issues! It gets your mind working on how the story could possibly turn to fit the ending you saw and can take away from the reading experience. Now when I turn to that final page, I pretty much cover by eyes and leave just a smidge of space to peek at the numbers…

11. to stop reading in the middle

Admittedly, I’ve done this before….but I always end of going back to it. The book: The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman. I was not enthralled when I was reading the first of this series; in fact I was getting a bit bored actually. Too much technical mumbo jumbo or religious discussion and I lose focus. I put it down, came back to it while on a trip a few months down the line and TADA…I was back in the game (and luckily the story picks up later on too!). Sometimes a break is necessary and then other times….

12. to read a book over and over again

…you just want to say “AGAIN! AGAIN!” like a child riding the merry-go-round at the fair. I am a fan of rereading but I can’t say I get to do it too often as of late (not complaining of course, just simply stating a reality). The books I’ve reread most would be the Harry Potter series books 1-4 (I kept rereading the preceding books in the series just before the next would release…until it took me a year form the date of release to read book 5!), The Forbidden Game series by L.J. Smith (maybe 3 times?)….and then this one children’s book at Christmas called Ted E. Bear Finds Christmas (SUCH a cute story if you can find it!).

The Reader’s Bill of Rights

Love: The good, the bad, and the prickly....

Welcome to the late night edition of your favorite bookishly delicious site....Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers. (...or at least one of your favorites I hope...^_^)

Today's post almost didn't happen as time was anything but on my side, however I had just read an adorable new arrival to the store earlier this week and thought...why not? I mean I was gonna save it for Valentine's Day but as they say, any time is a good time to share the love. Without further adieu, today's book if choice is....

MR. PRICKLES

The first thing I thought was ....oh look, we're already getting our Valentine stock in...O-O....which is good yes but still felt a smudge rushed. In second glance, the title made me smile and the artwork produced a giggle. Yes my friends, I was taken in by the story of this little porcupine who simply wanted to belong, held fast by the barbs thrown his way by those "cutesy" animals of the forest, and reminded of the simple pleasure it can be to "be alone, together".

It's true what they say; any situation is ten times easier to handle when you have someone to share it with. Be it a night on the town, a trip to the movies, or simply vegging at home reading books and staying up til dawn. Alone time is nice, but too much of a good thing is still too much. Mr. Prickles knew this first hand and experienced the awful side affects of envy (a feeling that isn't often covered in children's books), which had the potential to turn his heart cold. Thank goodness for Miss Pointypants! (Yes, that's the female porcupine's name...too cute, right?) She comes along in the nick of time and together they discover that there's another road worth taking that's much more enjoyable in the end; a road that leads to self appreciation, understanding and ultimately...love.

The artwork though dark in color scheme works well to illustrate the feelings circulating throughout the story. Their striking nature reflects Mr Prickles predicament while illuminating the "ugly" side of life exposed by the cutesy woodland dwellers. Bet you won't look at a squirrel or racoon the same way again....at least not if they're in the company of a porcupine.

In short, a book for all ages perfect for the upcoming season of love or anytime of year for that matter. It tackles the ugly feelings both caused and felt in our lives with tact and understanding, allowing the message of "you are not alone" to shine through. There is someone for everyone out there and if Mr Prickles is any example to be followed, the right one will stick with you for all the right reasons....even if you're covered in glue.

Welcome to another installment of Taste Testing Tuesdays!

Taste Testing Tuesdays was inspired by 'Teaser Tuesdays', a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

On the menu this week...one book that really gets under your skin and another that I'm having a hard time connecting to. Ready for a taste? Here goes....

See what I mean? How bleak is THAT! Needless to say this happens around the time Alex was being intoduced to his new "home"... O-O ...sorry prospects and certainly a way to break their spirits so they don't get any bright ideas about escaping...not that they could.....

After a pause I said, "Maybe you didn't notice, but we're spoon-fed about how the real world works. We get a job at some Fortune 500 company, we hear the boss say he's glad we joined his staff, and then we go through the motions. We do whatever he asks, whether it's fill out a spreadsheet, sit in on a meeting, or bring him his stupid coffee every day. And what do we get out of it? Maybe a decent paycheck and benefits, but what the hell else?"

Sounds like SOMEONE has been snacking out of the cynical cookie jar...although really, some of it does ring true. I mean how many of us are doing our dream jobs right now, or even something close? Anywho, before I drink the Kool-Aid, I'm gonna step away from this passage....suffice it to say that right now, this one is hit and miss with me. We shall see where it lands in the end.

Hi there!

Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers....the place to be whenever your need to read comes a knocking.

So...it's 2012.

O-O

OMG!

How exciting, right? Right! Why? Seriously...you didn't just ask that. I mean really with all the fun we had last year and a new year ahead filled with wonderful, glorious, exciting reads....what's NOT to be excited about? ^_^ I know my calendar's full...in a good way, but I digress.

It's the first book review of the year, a memorable post is certainly called for as it sets the tone for all to come. I pondered this moment for days, weeks even, seeing as how I have a few "read" titles awaiting their day in the spotlight from 2011 and...okay, okay...I'm kidding! I didn't ponder all that long because frankly, there was only one choice and the moment I finished reading it, the decision was made for me because just as you can't keep a good girl down, you can't hide a good read from the world. It was the PERFECT FIT...for me anyway, but I have a feeling it may strike the same notes for many of you out there as well. Right then, all shall be revealed in 3...2...1...today's book of choice is....

A Summer in Europe

*WARNING* This review may cause spontaneous growth to your wish list thanks to the fan girl-ish reading adventure about to be revealed. Proceed with caution. You have been warned.*

Now I've read this author's work before (okay, one title to be exact, but I aim to add the other one to my "to read" and then "read" lists very soon), so I've had a little experience with her writing style, character building and tone...but as many of you know, each written work is a unique creation and so its merit or lack thereof can truly only be judged against itself. Deep, huh? I blame Emerson and Thoreau's influence....not the actual writers but the characters in the book that bare their names. ^_^ Let's not get a head of ourselves...

When first we meet Gwendolyn Reese, it's like a mirror being held to your face...or rather my face. Let's just say that I identify with her in many ways and with that humanity Gwen endeared herself to me as a character to be heard, to be watched, and to grow with. Her life is not exactly where she intended it to be and when a birthday surprise (or lack thereof) falls through. things hit a pretty big bump in the road. Lucky for her, Aunt Bea is on the case....

Who is Aunt Bea? She's no detective is that's what you were thinking, rather she's the female strength and influence in one's life that has the best of intentions even if the methods don't always meet expectations. (She reminds me in some ways of my own Mom...but that's a story for another post...) She adds that spark to life that is often lost over time giving those she loves the needed push to reach further than the happy maybe after placed neatly before them. She's spunky (impromptu trip to Europe anyone?), eccentric (member of an "S and M club"...though it's not at all what you are thinking), a force so full of life that it spills over onto those in her general vicinity, creating almost magical results. Truly another memorable character and one whose ulterior motives for the trip with Gwen are clear from the start....she wants her to be HAPPY and what's so wrong with that? Anywho, back to the story....

Their trip takes them as well as the rest of the U.S. S and M group (stop giggling...it's not what you think!) overseas to explore the vast wonderful-ness that is Europe (needless to say a place that's on my dream vaca list) and get in a little gaming. Little did they know the life experience gained wouldn't merely be the stamps on their passports....or rather, little did Gwen know. In her methodical planning for this spur of the moment trip (there's an oxymoron), she has her luggage packed, her itinerary perfectly laid out, and her checklist of famous sites to see all written out. Yep...the perfect trip from A to Z...too bad life doesn't always go according to plan (something she should already know) but sometimes those deviations are what make it truly worth living...and whew so THESE certainly qualify. ^_^

The deviations in this story as in life bare many names and share a myriad of faces and spaces. From the "Britsicles" who eventually thaw to a point of understanding to Zenia and her unending zest for life, they are a group of characters in both senses of the word. Then there's the brothers.... ~swoon~.... Emerson and Thoreau. Both connoisseurs of their chosen areas and both playing a game in which Gwen unwittingly is a key player. Their charm goes far...their egos farther, but underneath the bravado and devil-may-care air beat the hearts of two fellows you'd love to know (and if you wouldn't, I would...so move over! ^_^). They quote their namesakes often and battle each other's wits constantly. In short, they are quite the duo to tango with and Gwen's heart may be their intended partner. What of her boyfriend-but-should-be fiancee-if-he-wasn't-chicken back in the states? What about him indeed! Gwen's sensibilities keep her in check...for now. Absence makes the heart grow fonder...but only if it's been tended to in the first place.

Ah yes....I enjoyed the story whole-heartedly. When Gwen really connected with the trip and the beauty surrounding her in both physical and mental presence....that's when her story really came to life. Everything was that much richer, every detail that much brighter. She was seeing things for the first time but REALLY seeing them and that realization radiated from the page through the author's words. The time spent in verbal banter and mental chess moves (lots of math references) are amusing and you can't help but laugh out loud at their antics. Just whose, I won't reveal...but trust me, it's a good match.

In summary, take one part Tuscan sun with a life built from the ruins....shake violently and let the pieces fall where they may. The end results may not be perfect, but they are perfectly enjoyable leaving a story that will resonate with both women achieving their dreams now as well as those barely able to glimpse it for the forest standing before them. It's about life. It's about love. It's about taking the chances we are presented and making the most of the experience we gain. It's about every one of us at one time or another and therefore allows us to see just what can happen when the other show drops without someone in place to catch it; sometimes it ends in a clatter....other times, it nets us a prince.

Recommended read for older teens through adult readers....it does get senseous a time or two but in a purely classy way. Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers....and happy New Year's Eve to you! Here's hoping your night is filled with fun, laughs, and good times....and that 2012 holds nothing but the best for you.

Now just because we are ushering out the current year doesn't mean the reading fun ends. ..if anything it kicks into overdrive. Yup, that's right. 2011 might be ready to leave us behind (and believe me, I'm glad to see it go), but reading wise, I'm not quite ready to let it go. While I can't finish out all the books nor reviews in a day, I can check another off the list with today's post. Ready to read all about it? Today's book of choice is....

By Jove, it's bloody hard to not slip into the language and accent we associate with this infamous ficticional detective when reading anything remotely associated to him. Never was there another "man of reason" purely the creation of one man's mind that has stayed with us generation after generation with such magnitude. In his more recent reincarnations, we've found his days as a young lad being explored more and more in an effort to bring his mysteries to the younger audience. This book however remains true to the originals in both time and age but introduces them to the audience in a new way....the choose-your-own-path book.

That's right. You get to play detective as you follow (or not follow) the clues laid before you in an effort to determine the who, what, when, where, why and how of each potential case. There's even an oddball one inserted as a potential trap by his adversary Dr Moriarty. Can you determine which is which? You best hope so or you might find yourself in more than a pickle...as I may have once or twice ~whistles~…hey, that's the fun of these stories, right? Never knowing which road is absolutely the right choice but giving it a go anyway and seeing just where you end up....that's what choose-your-own-path books are all about.

I've read one in this series previously (Jack London's CALL OF THE WILD....the review for which can be seen by searching my site) and found the interpretation carried off rather well. So how did the man of pipe and violin fair against the mighty pen? Just as good if I do say so myself....and I do. It gives you a taste of Holmes' world without the full entrée thereby allowing readers of all ages the chance to explore this timeless classic, see how it stacks up to their expectations and explore further with a read of the actual novel once this adventure is complete.
In my mind, anything that helps captivate the imagination of other readers or nonreaders, is a welcome addition to the bookish scene. This book would serve younger readers wonders as it breaks the ice between the classics and today's youth...but even my adult eyes were entertained and reminded of the magic that a few strokes of the pen can make. This author duo did a splendid job of sampling the originals while creating something unique enough to stand out from the crowd. Highly recommended to MG readers through adults for an adventure of mammoth proportions in the heart of jolly old England. Be sure to bring your thinking cap....you're gonna need it.

Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers…the place to read all about it, whether it be the newest release out there…or one that came and went but should still deserves its day in the sun.

Today’s featured title falls into that second category as it’s a book I read earlier this year that I just never quite got around to reviewing (my bad). Why? I’m a slacker by nature and just didn’t feel like doing it….*-*….JUST KIDDING! No, really…it was one of those reads that you weren’t quite sure what to say about it and while you mulled it all over, you kept reading…one thing lead to another and POOF, it’s a few months down the line. (That does happen to you too, right? I’m not alone here?) Time to put my memory to the test and perhaps add another title to your wish list for today’s book of choice is…

Okay so…think think think. What was it about this one that CAUSED me to THINK THINK THINK…to be honest (as if I’d give you anything less), I think it was the unexpected twist that occurred in the book. Everything starts out all creepy and magical. Powers discovered, connections to the past made, even a believable history to seduce the most hardened of readers (DEFINITE kudos to the author on all counts mentioned)…but then things took a turn for the…odd. Seriously, the appearance of these beings, or creatures for lack of a better word (and specific avoidance of what they really are so as not to ruin the story), totally threw me for a loop; to my mind, they just didn’t make sense. They weren’t human, they weren’t animal, they weren’t mineral…exactly; I just couldn’t wrap my mind around the enigma they presented…and yet, they were still sinister somehow. That last saving grace is how they didn’t manage to completely obliterate the story or ruin my experience with it. They became a bump albeit a rather large one since months later it still perplexes me in a little-brother-pulling-your-hair sorta way, but a bump nonetheless. Anywho, back to the rest of the story…

Ashline is a piece of work (though her sister Eve totally gives her a run for her money) but in a good way. She’s had a rough time thanks to events in her past (not purely her fault…), but she’s making the most of the new start at Blackwood Academy…at least until a secret heritage catches up with her and things begin to turn from normal to abbey in the blink of an eye. Yep…otherwise, she’s doing fine (and that last word also describes her park ranger love interest… ^_^). Her new friends aren’t exactly around thanks to a bond cherished since childhood but rather from the combined destinies they share making their interactions something they need to grow into.

It’s the age old battle between right and wrong, good and those that would do harm…with a teen god twist. Think Percy Jackson (though I haven’t read the series…*ducks flying objects*) but with multiple ethnic backgrounds and rather than sons/daughters of the gods, reincarnation. It’s an interesting storyline and it certainly keeps you attached to the page as you wait to see just who will survive their next encounter. Oh, wait…didn’t I tell you? Yeah…it seems that there are those (as usual) that know about their continual return to this plain and they aim to stop the cycle once and for all. Needless to say, it adds to the action sequences quite a bit…as do the flashbacks that Ashline has of her barely remembered childhood; considering what she sees though, it may not be such a bad thing that it’s hard to recollect (lab rat anyone?).

As you reach the climatic finale, yet another handful of mysteries is revealed…one regarding another child (another sister?) that is connected to both Ashline and Eve for better or worse (and seeing what they can do, it’s probably worse…)….needless to say, the search for them is sure to be a focal point in the sequel. Another is about a character in the story that, well…let me put it this way; when all is revealed, you won’t believe your eyes (literally caused me to gasp). Lastly, we deal with the group of opposing gods/goddesses that Eve’s been hanging with; they seem to think this reincarnation thing is for the birds and want to live out their immortal lives in the here and now. Wise choice…or fools errand? It remains to be seen but there are two things I know. First, book 2 will be on my radar because the mix of cultures and beliefs in this book gives it enough spice to stand out from the crowd. Second, there’s a battle on the horizon with some remarkable players….this should be a showdown to remember.

Recommended for teen readers and above; there’s nothing too graphic nor swear worthy and the romance fans the flames in lieu of igniting the sheets…but younger kiddos may not be so keen on the powers (and their use when in trouble) this group is endowed with. P.S. Be sure to take note of the culture mix in the book…provides for some great extended reading. This book is available now on a bookstore shelf near you…and from what I see on the website, it looks like book 2 may be schedule for August 2012, “Embers and Echoes”. (Woo-hoo!)

Hello…testing…1, 2…test, test….is this thing on?

Hmm, kind of quiet out there but on or not….I’m on so let’s get this show on the road. It’s time for another day another post here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers…the place to get a potential addition to your wish list any day of the week.

Today’s featured title I finished a few weeks back…yep, playing catch up here, but I also needed time to digest it. Why? Well, it wasn’t heart burn inducing as I didn’t actually “eat” the book (…silly readers…) but it did have moments that both shined like a shooting star…and fell like one too. Allow me to explain (as if you thought I would do otherwise) as we jump into today’s book of choice….

After what feels like an eternity of waiting on the sidelines for Abby, Nick finally confesses that he’s head-over-heels for her. Sounds good? It should because in fact it was…despite reservations you may have about its origins. What reservations? Ah, that’s right…I’ve yet to tell you. Silly me! This author was inspired to write this particular story by a song (just as I borrowed a line from another song by the same artisit for the post title)…’You Belong with Me’ by Taylor Swift. Yep. I’ll give you a moment to close your mouth because I’m sure it’s hanging open in either shock, awe, or morbid curiosity. *whistles while waiting* All good? Let’s continue.

I like many of you was a bit skeptical upon hearing the book’s origins…I mean, yes, many of her songs are mini-movie worthy (music video at least) and the particular album this song came from does tell a story of love lost and gained, but to write an actual book about it? I definitely had a raised eyebrow or two at that point. Thank goodness I don’t run from the raised eyebrow response because it was in fact a GOOD READ.

The story is sweeping in that teenage love sorta way, the narrative while overindulgent a time or two works well enough to keep things moving along but the surprise about halfway through this 527 pager (yep, it’s a big one) was completely unexpected…and worked well to inject new life into the story. You see, the first half of the book is all about the discovery of their feelings and making the most of the summer before college….the second half, we jump TEN YEARS into the future to see what’s become of them. Confused? Don’t worry…I was too for a moment.

The important thing here is to keep in mind the opening sequence (with the accident mentioned in the tease from the author). That is the real splitting point for the two halves of this well rounded whole. It may not seem to connect at first but as the peaces start falling into place, trust me…it will. Your feelings towards one character or another will change a few dozen times as reasons for actions or lack thereof are finally explained, all leading up to a dramatic ending that…well, I won’t spoil it for you but it is certainly worth sticking around for. ^_^ In short, I really enjoyed it and found myself lost in the pages many a time wishing for just a few more minutes, a few more seconds to read further into Abby’s and Nick’s story.

Now…here’s where we get down to the part I had to “digest”.

Self published books are a creation all their own. How so? Well, the story can be fantastic, that hidden gem waiting to be discovered by “Mr. Big Time Publisher”…hence why I consider all titles that come my way regardless of who’s pushing it…BUT and there is a “but”, they can also be lacking in a few areas as well. Case in point, the title of this book works well, but the cover art….could be improved. Small cosmetic issue, I know, but it can catch a reader’s attention or turn it off completely regardless of how much we try NOT to judge a book by its cover. Second point and much bigger issue for me, the editing process… *deep breath*

Okay, blame it on the fact that my 7^th grade English teacher was previously a college professor who retired and was talked back into joining the world of education, but grammar, sentence structure, proper word usage…they are all important factors in any written work. Now, I’m not perfect (believe you me) and I certainly make errors in my own writing (and cringe and delete and re post as often as I find them to avoid that little tick of irritation it causes me….thank you Mrs. D.) but with a full length novel….you HAVE to be EXTRA careful. Do you know how many times I’m reading a book (non-ARCs mind you) and discover a word or lack thereof misspelled or misplaced? More often than I’d care to admit and usually the few that slip through the editing cracks are so far between they slide off my reading mind like water off a duck’s back…usually they don’t even elicit a mention in my posts; this one, I have to.

While the story ROCKED, there is a significant amount of editing to be done. It’s not really a case of misspelled words or improper usage (KUDOS to the author for avoiding those common errors!), but it is a saddled by an issue with incomplete thoughts…or rather re-thought thoughts? The sentence or paragraph will start out fine and then when you’ve almost reached the end…BAM you’re thrown a curve. From the way these instances read, it’s like the author had a clear vision of where they were taking the story, thought better of it, and re-worded the ending to suit their needs. Unfortunately, it makes for the occasional reread now and again to get things back in order but other than interrupting the reading flow, it doesn’t draw away from the overall enough to block your enjoyed. *whew…all done*

In summary, a GREAT story filled with all the wonder, hope, and emotions a Young Adult book promises with an unexpected twist to bring non-teen readers into the intended audience as well. If you’re looking to capture that feeling of discovering your first love and whirlwind of emotions that follow, this books for you. If you’re looking to catch a glimpse of what happily ever after might (or might not…again, not spoiling the ending!) look like, this books for you. If you’re simply looking for a story that shares both the ideals of young love with the reality that is life and a fair amount of both romantic intent and angst…this book is definitely for you. Certainly a title that will rate higher with female readers, but hey….everyone needs a “white knight” at some time in their lives, even if that time isn’t right now.

As for me, I'm having a drastically hard time stepping back into things. Had to work today and it was oh-so-busy it could make your head twirl. A nice slow but steady day would have been refreshing but what can you do but take it in stride. *shakes head* Anywho...

Today's title I was going to feature before the holiday's arrival but had second thoughts (not to mention time constraints) when I realized how.perfect it would be just after the magical day. Why? You'll see. Today's book of choice is..

THE PUPPY THAT CAME FOR CHRISTMAS

What starts as a heartfelt desire to share their lives with a family turns into a furry affair that would benefit not only themselves but others in need. Megan and Ian were two that wished to be more but fate doesn't always take into account what we want when it weaves its tapestry and as their hopes of adding a little one to their home dwindled with time, so did their aspirations. However, all of that changed one sunny day on the opposite side of the world when a puppy named Goro opened their eyes to a new take on extended family.

Yes, my friends it was the small act of renting a puppy for an afternoon stroll in a foreign country that introduced them to the love a fur baby can really give...and receive. As many of you know, I'm a pet parent myself and my fuzzy wuzzies make an appearance here every so often so I totally get what they were feeling. The love they give freely is amazing and can turn the darkest of days right side up again. This couple wasn't sure if a full fledged commitment was really in the cards from them so they decided to get their feet wet my assisting in the training of a future helper dog. Enter the little ball of yellow fur we shall call Emma.

Emma showed them the ins and outs of puppy parenting as well as the exceptional results that can be achieved when training isn't so much a job but a heart felt team effort. She was a gorgeous golden retriever that grew into so much more in such a short amount of time that when the inevitable day of graduation came... no one was truly prepared.

No worries my friends, all things end well for both parties but it was their first experience with the necessary "good bye" that eventually follows in these types of programs. As much as they weren't certain they were ready for the big plunge initially, eventually they came to see they weren't ready to bid their charges farewell time and time again. It's a big undergoing not only financially to train and grow these fine four legged helpers but there is a toll on the heart that is very hard to justify. Hats off to all those able to perform this routine over and over because without people like you, we'd have a severe shortage of these furry life ablers.

The journey of life is always unexpected no matter how much planning is put into every step and the Rix's allow us to peer into their own adventure with eyes wide open. From their struggles with fertility to considerations of adoption to their eventual acceptance and embracement of the hand life has dealt them...it's emotional and truthful but well worth the tissues that may be needed.

Recommended reading for teen through adult readers. It's a wonderful story for the holidays or any day and will certainly give you a new perspective on life as you know it. Welcome back to a late night edition of the site that aims to fill your Christmas stocking with reading joy….Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers. So, it’s almost Christmas Eve. Have you finished all your shopping and wrapping? Got the holiday food all ready to go? Yeah…if you do, raspberries to you. =0P Just kidding! But seriously, I’m happy for you. Me? Not so much. Been oh-so-busy with work that I haven’t had the time to finish out everything yet and seeing as how I work tomorrow morning (Christmas Eve no less…) looks like I’ll be finishing up tomorrow afternoon/evening. *le sigh* Not ideal, but better than NOT finishing, ya know? Anywho…

Tonight’s review is a quickie…in more ways than one! It’s a title that I try to read every year in one format or another and without even thinking about it what with all the other reading I have going on, I accomplished it yet again. TOO COOL! ^_^ So, what title is that? Why only the epitome of all holiday picks….today’s book of choice is….

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Okay….so that’s NOT the actual cover over there. Sorry but try as I might, I couldn’t seem to find the match up for the one I read online and as I read it in preparation for story time at our store, I don’t have it in my actual home library, so we’re going off the actual experience right now as opposed to tempting you to purchase a particular copy. ^_^

So…the experience. It was much better than I expected. I wasn’t certain how much could be captured of the original story what with this particular edition being so very short and written in verse. Yep, that’s right. Think “Twas the Night Before Christmas” and add a touch of Dickens and TADA…you have your book. Anywho….the illustrations weren’t fantastical but they were present and for younger readers it would certainly supply the necessary visuals to get them involved in the story, one of the many reasons I was looking at it for the group event. As we all know, the classic tale does have a bit of a dark side with the possible death of Tiny Tim and Scrooge’s own impending doom, and though they aren’t entirely absent from the book….they handle it in stride with enough tact that even the wee little ones ears should be a fine audience.

In short (as promised), a surprisingly good read but then again…it IS Dickens after all. Though I don’t have the specifics on me about this particular edition (Sorry!), I can’t help but recommend the story itself to you in whatever format you may encounter it. It’s a classic that never grows old and with each new edition I add to me “read” collection, I find something else in the story to ponder or embrace. It’s stood the test of time with good reason and truly is a great reminder of what Christmas REALLY means.

So, be sure to share the love and joy of the season with those you hold dear…and those you simply meet in passing; there can never really be too much good cheer, after all. I’m off to start checking my list off once at least….

Yes my friends….sleep is allusion sometimes around these parts what with the world the way it is today, life in general and of course all the books you just want to read READ rEaD ReAd. Sleep is a luxury and I laugh in the face of it…Ha ha HA! *yawn* Okay, so it catches up to me every now and again but you know how it goes, I’m sure. Anywho, enough of my ramblings about pillows and things, it’s time to get bookish.

Today we are traveling the intellectual reading rainbow but in a totally neato-mosquito sorta way. What’s that? Are you SCOFFING at me? O-O No one dares scoff at THE Insatiable Reader!?! That’s right my friends; a book of lists with room to spare for both laughter and learning….quite the combo, right?

In keeping with the spirit of the book, may I present my first of two lists…this one’s entitled…

COOL THINGS I LEARNED BY READING THIS BOOK OF AWESOMENESS

(…in no particular order…)

Humpty Dumpty MAY have sat on a wall…but the rhyme of old never said he was an egg…or a “he” for that matter.

The solution to an “ice cream headache”….don’t let it touch the roof of your mouth…or eat it when it’s cold outside. (Seems they occur from the blood vessels dilating to…well, you’ll see….)

Alton Brown (you know, the foodie guy) was the director of photography for R.E.M.’s 1987 video for “The One I Love”. Rock on Mr. Brown!

There are many odd ways to die and rest assured if it happens to you, you’ll end up on a list. Death by toothpick anyone? How about being smothered with adoration?

Rudolph was not the forerunner for being the red nosed reindeer. Originally, it was Rollo or Reginald. Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it…

The average person would make $600 a day from a penny for their thoughts. *blink blink* _watches mailbox for check with lotsa zeros_

Remember ‘Eureka’s Castle’? So does R.L. Stine…he was a co creator and head writer for the show!

Harper Lee worked as a reservation clerk for 8 years…not surprising since most authors had another job other than writing back in the day. What IS surprising however is that one year for Christmas, she was given a year off from that place of business to do whatever she wished…the results? That was the year she penned the infamous ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’…talk about time off well spent!

That my friend is just the tip, the very pinnacle, of the proverbial iceberg we are looking at here. The editors did a GREAT job in finding and consolidating the information presented. From the varied in length lists to the tidbits of factoids that run across the bottom of each and every page, you’ll find out about everything from whose mouth is cleaner, yours or your dogs (both are equally “dirty” in their own right) to what the Monopoly guy’s REAL name is (not telling…you’ll have to read it!) and everything in between. In short….

…a great book for fun time readers as well as the most studious amongst you.
…a great gift for the holiday season to educate AND entertain.
…you’ll learn something new, guaranteed…and you’ll have a great time doing it.
…you will find yourself spouting out random fun facts JUST to impress your friends after absorbing this wealth of information. (Trust me, been there…done that.)
I enjoyed this book and think you will too….in case there was any doubt. ^_^
I am one SMOOT tall. Just sayin. ^_^ Bonus points for knowing what that means or reading the book to find out.

Why hello there!

Having a bookishly good day so far?

Fantastic! Glad to hear it. Hope it continues and then some!

Why all the well wishes? Simple! This is Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers….the place to let your bookish self run free and simply be…YOU. Speaking of you….today’s featured title plays rather nicely with that theme of “you”-ness and stars a unique cast of characters you’ll simply be bowled over by. Don’t believe me? Time for me to prove you wrong…all in good fun of course. ^_^ Today’s book of choice is….

The Pirate and the Penguin

Penguin is TIRED of the boring old (and cold!) South Pole; so much so he spends his time not frolicking with his fellow penguins and penguin-ettes, but…knitting. The result is his adorable (and warm!) green sweater and his wardrobe staple throughout the book. He longs for adventure and warm sunny days somewhere far, far away from his ice crusted home, but the how and where were all up in the air. Meanwhile, somewhere across the stormy seas…

Pirate is an itchy twitchy little fella (funny using that term for a pirate but it fits no less) who has more adventures than he can stomach, after all he IS a pirate even if he’s not of the “Black Beard” variety. His high-jinks are legendary as are the itch fits and sweaty bouts he suffers from…a vacation to a more relaxing state of mind (or location) would be grand but the ability to do so eludes him, after all he has a pirate ship and crew to maintain! Wouldn’t it be marvelous if these two could meet? Oh wait…*looks through spyglass* …it looks like fate is adjusting its course and turning due North for a family friendly adventure these two (and YOU) won’t soon forget…

As it is a storybook in length and plotline, I’ll spare you the details because otherwise there’s no surprise and we all LOVE surprises now don’t we? Suffice it to say that a little “freaky Friday” action occurs and it just might be what the doctor ordered for this odd (yet adorable) little pair. I have to say it, I love Penguin and his outgoing personality amongst all the “suits” in his home (get it? Suits? Penguins? *hehe*)….by the same token, I love Pirate for being the quirky little guy he is and despite his differences from his companions, still trying to grin and “arrr” it. The underlying message….being true to oneself is the best (perhaps the only?) way to be truly happy and find your version of peace in this world….a reminder that most of us could use from time to time.

Now, a step back to the whimsical….let’s talk art work because really, as much story as this one has…it’s still about the illustrations. From just inside the front cover to just inside the back (and of course the actually cover and back of the book), we are treated to the fun (and funny) filled illustrations of Ms. Storms. We see what Penguin really thinks of the South Pole with a map listing “Yawny Yogaland” and “Chilly Cove”, whilst on the Pirate side of things we see places like “Sticky Sweaty Island” and “Drives-Me-Coconuts Island”….but the fun doesn’t stop there. Once inside, we are greeted with a pleasing palette of colors adding to the peace or vibrancy (depending on what’s called for) of any given scene, truly working in harmony with the story.

In summary, whether seeking calm and comforting waters or a pirate’s life for thee, readers young and old will delight in this charming tale of what it really takes to show this world what for….the real you. Don’t be afraid to let your true self shine through for it is in those most revealing moments that we are at our finest.

Taste Testing Tuesdays

Good morning (or whatever time it is where you are), everyone!

On the menu this week...two books from different genres but with oh-so-much-goodness inside. Ready for a taste? Here goes...

Book 2 in this series and it's like a breath of fresh air...or rather salty ocean air. We meet up with the characters a mere week after book 1 leaving you with the story ahead in lieu of trying to figure out all that transpired in our absence. As you can see from the dialogue above, things are still going along swimmingly (pun intended) for Marina and Ethan, but I have my suspicions that things are about to take a turn for the dramatic here in a sec. It was like Gwen had walked onto the set of 'The Bold and the Beautiful: Italian-Style'. And, try as she might, it didn't look as though she'd get out of watching an extended episode, live and in person. She hoped she could keep a nice, safe distance from the cast -- and that no one would try to drag her into playing a role, too.

I know I've asked this before, but have you ever found bits of yourself in the characters you read? Okay, so that's a silly question for most of you but seriously, this one started out like a dash of cold water to the face...in a GOOD way. A connection to the characters isn't necessarily essential for a great reading adventure, but it goes a long way in making it more enjoyable. Can't wait to see what Aunt Bea's friends from the S&M Club (< - - it doesn't stand for what you think, trust me!) have in store for our leading lady Gwen. This book is on a store shelf near you just waiting for your arrival, don't leave it lonely for the holidays.
