Silver Dagger Book Tours presents... TEMPT THE FLAMES by Marnee Blake - EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!

Tempt the Flames
The Smokejumpers #1

by Marnee Blake
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Pub Date: 9/11/2018

Meg Buchanan is determined to prove she didn’t get the trainer job in Redmond, Oregon’s rookie smokejumper class because of her family’s long history as firefighters there—or out of pity. But if teaching one of her own brothers isn’t challenging enough, Lance Roberts is in the new class of recruits. Once her brother’s best friend, and her first, unrequited crush, he’s also the son of the man responsible for her dad’s death.

Lance is stunned to realize that this confident redhead is the stubborn girl he once dreamed about. There’s no way he can fall for her now. He needs to focus all his attention on his training—and discovering the truth about the long-ago fire that killed both of their fathers. But as the undeniable heat between them threatens to ignite, someone attempts to put an end to Lance’s amateur sleuthing—and his life…

Chapter 1
Driving from Bend to the smokejumper base in Redmond, Oregon, was like traveling back in time. It only took a half an hour, but the trip set Meg Buchanan back ten years.
As she pulled into the parking lot of Redmond Air Center, the tires of her Forerunner crunching on the dirt and gravel drive, she repeated the pep talk she’d been giving herself the entire ride.
She had the job. She was officially an assistant trainer and safety instructor for this year’s Redmond smokejumper rookie training.
She wasn’t a firefighter, but she was a physician’s assistant with lots of practical medical knowledge. She was qualified. More importantly, she was a seasoned triathlete. She was in tiptop shape, and she definitely could run some rookies through their paces. Add her willingness to do the job for barely any money and her uncle’s glowing recommendation, and she’d been approved.
That was her mantra. She could do this. She had the skills. She’d been approved.
She refused to accept that she’d been given this job because of her last name.
Sure, Will, her oldest brother, was an active Redmond smokejumper, and Uncle Joe was the base manager. Her middle brother, Hunter, would be in this year’s rookie class. Together, they made a pretty impressive Buchanan family legacy at Redmond.
But, if she’d received preferential treatment, it was because her father’s name—Jason Buchanan—rested on the memorial wall at the base, along with the other firefighters who’d given their lives in sacrifice to this job.
After shifting the truck into park, Meg dropped her hands into her lap and abandoned that train of thought. No use tempting the universe by spilling doubt and negative energy all over it. She had the experience, and she was going to give this job everything she had.
This was her chance.
She’d never been able to become a firefighter like her brothers. After hours of counseling, she couldn’t overcome her paralyzing fear of fire. But, this? She could do this. These rookies were in for the training of their lives.
And she’d finally feel like she was honoring her birthright.

Award-winning author and RITA® finalist Marnee Blake used to teach high school students but these days she only has to wrangle her own children. Originally from a small town in Western Pennsylvania, she now battles traffic in southern New Jersey where she lives with her hero husband and their happily-ever-after: two very energetic boys. When she isn't writing, she can be found refereeing disputes between her children, cooking up something sweet, or hiding from encroaching dust bunnies with a book.

About the book...
It’s Christmas in Gold Valley, and this wounded widower is about to get another shot at love…

Grant Dodge didn’t expect to find a woman sleeping in an abandoned cabin on his family ranch. Or to find her so intriguing. Unlike every other woman in town, McKenna Tate doesn’t know Grant’s a widower. There’s no pity in the looks she gives him. McKenna wants him, and Grant has forgotten what it’s like to feel like a man. A no-strings fling for Christmas might be the kind of holiday cheer Grant needs…

With only a suitcase to her name, McKenna came to Gold Valley to confront her birth father. She didn’t plan to work at the Dodge ranch or fall for the gorgeous cowboy who keeps his heart roped off. But there’s no denying the way their broken pieces fit together. Hope brought her to Gold Valley—but will it be the gift that could finally heal Grant, and McKenna’s own wounded heart?

Also includes a bonus Gold Valley novella, Snowed in with the Cowboy!

Grant Dodge and McKenna Tate.
At first glance, as different as can be...but at soul depth, a match like no other.

I've adored ALL my ventures to Gold Valley, but getting to the heart of Grant's story felt like a privilege.  No, not because he supposedly deserves sainthood, but because he's always been a man of little words, hanging around the sidelines, there when needed, but unobtrusive, and when we discover what's been hiding in those depths, there's no turning back.  My heart fell so hard for him as his past was revealed, and, in a third-party-haven't-actually-experienced-anything-close-to-that sorta way, I get why he shut himself off from the world.  It was easier to bear being the one left behind, to deal with all that had happened as well as all that hadn't, and to protect his ever loving cowboy heart.  Hey, they may be stubborn, but they can be bruised too...as can cowgirls, or those trying to get the hang of being one.

McKenna was such a full character.  She had strong survival skills with a no nonsense attitude that helped to shield a tender heart of gold.  Now don't get me wrong, she's no saint either, but she tries to do what's right, tries to be fair, even to her own determent at times.  Her sudden appearance in Gold Valley seemed strange, what with her hiding information and all, but her mission wasn't one of great deception, but rather to find the best way to discover the truth without upsetting numerous lives.  All she wanted was a place to belong, a place she could be part of a whole...to love and be loved.  Too much to ask?  Certainly not...but while the familial love may be hard enough to gain, the cowboy she's get her knickers in a twist over is just as much if not more of a hurdle.  Even as their barriers begin to break down, even as they bare more than just their skin to one another, it's one relationship that wasn't planned...that may simply be not meant to be...unless some concessions are made on both sides and real acceptance, bone deep, is achieved.

All in all, I LOVED THIS BOOK!  From start to finish, there was always something to discover, feelings to immerse yourself in, and friendly faces to reminisce with or look forward to.  (SO looking forward to Jamie getting a story...and I'd love Bea to as well!)   It's not a quick and easy romance, but a much heartier tale of what happens when love is all you have versus all you need.  Sometimes there is another once in a lifetime, and as unexpected as it may be, it doesn't make it any less REAL.

Make Me Fall
Books & Brews, Book 2
by
Sara Rider

About the book...
After losing her job, her home, and her friends in her divorce, Nora Pitts is determined not to make the same mistakes when she starts over in the small town of Shadow Creek, Washington. No more toiling away in the lab at the expense of her social life, and definitely no more men. Ever. But making friends in her thirties is so much harder than she anticipated. And when it comes to her gorgeous yet obnoxious neighbor, it’s a whole lot easier to make enemies.

Eli Hardin doesn’t have a lot of sympathy for his uptight neighbor, until he overhears her so-called new friends making fun of her un-datable status. Suddenly he finds himself volunteering for a date with a woman who’s been leaving angry hate-notes in his mailbox, and in way over his head. Because all it takes is one disastrous date with Nora for Eli to fall hard.

But falling for Eli isn’t something Nora’s ready for—not when he’s her complete opposite, and especially not when he turns out to be the best friend she’s made in Shadow Creek. But as her attraction and her feelings for Eli grow hotter, resisting him might just lead to heartbreak anyway.

Eli marked off twenty-six and three-quarter inches as precisely as he could and lifted the blade of the circular saw.
“Oh my God, I soooo wasn’t kidding,” one of the women next door said loudly. “Nora really does need to get laid.”
His shoulders tensed. This wasn’t the first time he’d overheard the women loudly shit-talking his neighbor behind her back. He had no idea why she hung out with them.
“Maybe you should set her up with someone,” another woman added.
The other two laughed. “Can you imagine Nora on a date? She’s so uptight and frigid. Who would want to date her? No lay is worth that kind of torture. Can’t you just picture her busting out her bottle of sanitizer before the poor sap tries to hold her hand?”
His jaw tensed and he felt the last of his patience snap like an icicle in his warm hands. He sliced the saw through the wood, threw his protective glasses onto the ground, and marched over to the waist-high chain link fence. “I’d do it.”
All three women turned to look at him like he was a space alien who’d just beamed down to earth. The one who’d been talking the most leaned forward in her seat. “What did you just say?”
“You heard me. I’d go out with her.”
“You can’t be serious.”
The more this woman pushed, the more he wanted to put her in her place. No, Nora was not the kind of woman he would normally ask out—mainly because she was one of the few who didn’t seem to fall for his charm. In fact, he was pretty sure she didn’t think he had any charm whatsoever, but she was attractive and smart enough to read a book every month. That alone made her more dateable than half the population in this town. “Sure as hell am.”
The woman leaned forward, smiling at him like he was freshly caught prey in her snare. “If you’re looking for a date, I could show you a much better time.”
He shrugged, keeping his fake smile on his face. “No thanks. Backstabbing and mean isn’t my type.”
He probably enjoyed the shocked look on the woman’s face a little too much, but it was seriously fucking rude to trash-talk the hostess while sitting on her porch and eating her canapés.
The screen door slid open right at that moment. Nora walked out with a plate of decadent-looking mini-chocolate cakes that made his mouth water on sight. Her eyes darted from her friends to him and back again. “Um, what’s going on?”
He rested his hands against the old chain-link fence. “What’s going on is that your so-called friends are talking trash about your love life behind your back and don’t seem to think you can get a date. So I volunteered.”
“You what?”
“Volunteered. You and me. Tomorrow night at seven. I’ll drive.”
She slammed the cake tray onto the coffee table and set her hands on her hips. She looked around, like she couldn’t decide where to focus her anger. Of course she settled on him. “Who says I’d want to go out with you?”
He raised his eyebrow, liking the way she got flustered around him a little too much. “Got better plans?”
Even at the distance between them, he could see her suck in a breath. Her mouth hardened into a flat line, but she didn’t say no.
“Tomorrow. Seven. Dinner. Oh, and consider making new friends who aren’t so damn mean. These ladies don’t deserve any of those amazing-looking cakes.” He grabbed his plank of wood and headed into the house, wondering what the hell he’d just gotten himself into.

Avoid big places, keep to... SMALL SPACES by Katherine Arden!

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're shining the light on a new release (hit bookstore and virtual shelves yesterday, woo hoo! Happy belated!) from G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers.  It's a Middle Grade Fiction title with a SPOOKY edge that's just right for the reading season that's quickly descending upon us...like the mists in a cornfield filled with not-creepy-whatsoever scarecrows that mean us no harm at all because, come on, they're scarecrows!  Right?  😱  Right...so, with that being said, let's get to today's book of choice...

About the book...

After suffering a tragic loss, eleven-year-old Ollie only finds solace in books. So when she happens upon a crazed woman at the river threatening to throw a book into the water, Ollie doesn’t think–she just acts, stealing the book and running away. As she begins to read the slender volume, Ollie discovers a chilling story about a girl named Beth, the two brothers who both loved her, and a peculiar deal made with “the smiling man,” a sinister specter who grants your most tightly held wish, but only for the ultimate price.

Ollie is captivated by the tale until her school trip the next day to Smoke Hollow, a local farm with a haunting history all its own. There she stumbles upon the graves of the very people she’s been reading about. Could it be the story about the smiling man is true? Ollie doesn’t have too long to think about the answer to that. On the way home, the school bus breaks down, sending their teacher back to the farm for help. But the strange bus driver has some advice for the kids left behind in his care: “Best get moving. At nightfall they’ll come for the rest of you.” Nightfall is, indeed, fast descending when Ollie’s previously broken digital wristwatch, a keepsake reminder of better times, begins a startling countdown and delivers a terrifying message: RUN.

Only Ollie and two of her classmates heed the bus driver’s warning. As the trio head out into the woods–bordered by a field of scarecrows that seem to be watching them–the bus driver has just one final piece of advice for Ollie and her friends: “Avoid large places. Keep to small.”

And with that, a deliciously creepy and hair-raising adventure begins.

A dash of Children of the Corn, a helping of Jeepers Creepers, and a WHOLE lot of heart, make this one PERFECT read for the season.  What?  You don't think SCARY stories can have heart?  Well, think again!

Ollie is a keep to herself, bookish, yet rough and tumble girl, not afraid to speak her mind, but preferring to stay outside the limelight.  I loved her from the moment we met!  She stood up for someone she didn't even particularly care for (yet!), laid claim to literature that was about to be destroyed (though if it had, I wonder how the outcome would have been affected?), lived her life truly and fully in spite of her recent loss, and was just all around one smart cookie...and trust me, she HAD to be with what she's about to encounter!  Don't get me wrong, she wasn't perfect...but really, WHO IS?  It's those faults, those missteps, those miscalculations that make us HUMAN...something that some only WISH they could be.  The challenges she faces are made a bit easier as she shares the load with unexpected friends, and a watch that has mysteriously taken on a life of its own (weirdness...but in a good way!), but don't think it's a stroll through the cornfield because yeah, no...DANGER!

Trust me, once things start rolling, you're not gonna want to put this one down...though perhaps you shouldn't read it at night...in the dark...all alone...near any cornfields or mazes.  *-*  Seriously though, SUCH A GREAT READ!  Ollie, Coco, and Brian are my new besties, as they are to each other...at least, if they make it through the mist...and passed his servants...and passed the smiling man... *gulp*  A great pick for any season, and a high recommendation for Middle Grade fans of all ages.
