RRR presents... BEYOND THE YEW TREE by Rachel Walkley - EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're joining forces with Rachel's Random Resources to bring you a stop along their current tour featuring the work of Rachel Walkley.  We've got a spotlight to shine and an excerpt to share, so without further ado, I give you today's blog tour guest...

by
Rachel Walkley

About the book...
Whispers in the courtroom.
Only one juror hears them.
Can Laura unravel the truth by the end of the trial?

In an old courtroom, a hissing voice distracts shy juror, Laura, and at night recurring nightmares transport her to a Victorian gaol and the company of a wretched woman.

Although burdened by her own secret guilt, and struggling to form meaningful relationships, Laura isn’t one to give up easily when faced with an extraordinary situation.

The child-like whispers lead Laura to an old prison graveyard, where she teams up with enthusiastic museum curator, Sean. He believes a missing manuscript is the key to understanding her haunting dreams. But nobody knows if it actually exists.

Laura is confronted with the fate of two people – the man in the dock accused of defrauding a charity for the blind, and the restless spirit of a woman hanged over a century ago for murder. If Sean is the companion she needs in her life, will he believe her when she realises that the two mysteries are converging around a long-forgotten child who only Laura can hear?

Ordinary women.
Extraordinary experiences.

~~~ EXCERPT ~~~
Extract 3:
Laura is a typical officer worker, and what could possibly upset her nice routine of life? Well, for starters, she’s a juror on what she assumes will be a boring case of fraud, except she’s beginning to doubt that, and to top it all, ever since the trial start in the old courthouse in Lincoln Castle, she’s been hearing whispers in the court room. By the fifth day of the trial, she’s realising something more sinister is happening to her.
Laura had woken up, breathless, heart thumping against her breastbone. The unnatural images remained embedded in her waking thoughts, unlike normal dreams, and they saturated her emotions with horror. But the experience wasn’t quite like a paralysing panic attack, not in the way she remembered those bad spells. The bizarre scene belonged in a theatre or cinema, played out for her, an audience of one.
The dream, always the same, like an episode repeating itself on a loop, was too vivid in its details to forget, so it lingered on and became part of her memories. She lay there, fatigue defeated by the rigours of adrenaline, and convinced that if she managed to doze off again, the nightmare would rematerialise. What bothered her the most was that, throughout the macabre scene, she had heard noises like the ones in the courtroom – hissing, tiny squeaks, and a high-pitched whine. However, she now knew they weren’t anything to do with a fly or any other small creature. She was hearing a voice: distorted, quiet, and infantile; the incomprehensible whispers of a young child, possibly a girl.
Shivering feverishly, she pulled the duvet up to her chin and stayed stiff until dawn, then she got up and dressed. The aching diminished during breakfast. She hadn’t sneezed or blown her nose, so she ruled out a cold. She moved around her house, avoiding the things that were Marco’s, and came to the conclusion that she needed a major distraction. More importantly: how to escape the dreams?
Summer in Provence
by
Lucy Coleman
About the book...
Is a change as good as a rest?
When married couple Fern and Aiden have a windfall, their reactions could not be more different. While Fern is content to pay off their mortgage and build a nest egg before starting a family, her husband is set on traveling the world.
Fern’s not much of a back-packer so, before she knows it, the idea of a ‘marriage gap year’ takes shape. And, as Aiden heads off to the wilds of Australia, Fern chooses the more restful Provence for her year out.
Set amidst the glorious French scenery, Château de Vernon offers a retreat from the hustle and bustle of normal life, and Fern agrees to help out in return for painting lessons from the owner – renowned, but rather troubled, painter Nico.
 As their year unfolds in very different ways, will the time apart transform their marriage, or will it drive Fern and Aiden even further apart…
Let Lucy Coleman whisk you off on a heart-warming, sun-drenched and magical French adventure.
Lavender, Heart, Wood, Soap Heart, Love, Romantic
This is the story of two people finding themselves in the most untraditional way possible, and while the ultimate goal may have been bringing them closer together, the outcome may have been the biggest unknown of their married lives.
When I first started reading this one, I admit...I was enchanted by the cover.  I mean, just look at it!  It's simply gorgeous, and that gave me warm feelings about the story I was about to entertain.  When I began getting to know Fern and Aiden, I was curious...just what was going on with this couple who seemed to have distance in their hearts?  Then the windfall happened, and I considered their problems, if money bound, would be banished...but things went deeper than that.  There were wounds on one side that while never intended, still existed, and the restlessness that built within them came bursting out in an exasperating rush.
A gap year?  In a marriage?  I was beyond flabbergasted...actually, I was probably AS flabbergasted as Fern, but with a lot more words coming out of my mouth regarding the whole idea.  I mean, who DOES that?  Who truly loves the other person, but wants to step away from them for a year?  I get he had wanderlust, and I get she had a fear of flying that inhibited that in some fashion, but my word!  I was just blown away.  Then, things started happening, at least for Fern, because the viewpoint we truly get the clearest image of is through her eyes, and it was...enlightening.  She found herself in so many little ways, and unlocked so many larger doors that were creating obstacles, while lifting several pieces of the world from her weary shoulders...my mind circled back to the original suggestion/steps that created this "opportunity".  Would it be a good idea?  Or would the changes they were both bound to experience not simply drive them apart, but make it clearer as to why they seemed to be growing in that direction anyway?
It was a conundrum, and I could only stay along for the ride to find out just how things played out.  Along the journey, we meet so many souls seeking their own solace, understanding, and new beginnings that one can't help but be moved by not only their stories, but the steps they've taken to find their paths again.  The tortured artist, the unheard youth, the guilt ridden heart, the haunted widow...all of them, good, giving, and kind hearted people, just needing to find a connection, along with their own voices once again.  It gave the story a true feeling of togetherness, and provided a wonderful fullness to everything experienced.
RRR presents... SURVIVING ME by Jo Johnson - EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!
Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're joining Rachel's Random Resources for a spot along their current tour featuring the work of Jo Johnson.  It's a curiously titled book that tackles a variety of heavy topics in what sounds like a relatable, if not entertaining at times, way.  So, let's get things started as we welcome today's blog tour guest and title in the spotlight...
Surviving Me
by
Jo Johnson
About the book...
Deceit has a certain allure when your life doesn’t match up to the ideal of what it means to be a modern man.
Tom's lost his job and now he's been labelled 'spermless'. He doesn't exactly feel like a modern man, although his double life helps. Yet when his secret identity threatens to unravel, he starts to lose the plot and comes perilously close to the edge.
All the while Adam has his own duplicity, albeit for very different reasons, reasons which will blow the family's future out of the water.
If they can't be honest with themselves, and everyone else, then things are going to get a whole lot more complicated.
This book tackles hard issues such as male depression, dysfunctional families and degenerative diseases in an honest, life-affirming and often humorous way. It focuses particularly on the challenges of being male in today’s world and explores how our silence on these big issues can help push men to the brink.
~~~ EXCERPT ~~~

These are the opening paragraphs of Surviving Me, a debut novel about two regular men whose minds become unfit for purpose. This is written from the perspective of Tom, the main character. He has been bullied out of his job by a junior colleague and is too scared to tell his wife, she is desperate to start expensive fertility treatment. This chapter follows him to a café miles from home.

At this point in time, I can accurately be described as unemployed, impotent, and a liar.
It still puzzles me that, just a few weeks after my first wedding anniversary, I am sitting alone in a café for misfits, miles from my home. I found this shambolic haven by chance. What does a man with a disintegrating life do by himself for hours at a time? If you hang about too much in the same street then other people get suspicious, and if you drive around aimlessly for too long then your own internal darkness is unbearable.

One day, just into November, I’d been driving for an hour, passing increasingly unfamiliar places, and felt confident I must be in a different county. I took the first turning off the main road, and after a few miles found an old-fashioned, largish vil- lage with instant appeal – quiet; no one was likely to know me here. The sign said ‘Welcome to Middle Priory’, and under- neath another sentence asked me to ‘Please drive carefully through our village’. I parked in a small car park – one of the few remaining where you could park for free. I spotted a woman in a heavy checked coat getting out of her car. Her hair was pinned into a neat doughnut on the back of her head; she looked old enough to be a local. I ran to catch her up as she was walking out of the car park. She spun around so fast, I expected to feel a thud from the umbrella she held in her fist.

‘I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you. I’m desperate for a decent cup of coffee. I wondered if you knew the area.’ Her mouth opened into a warm smile that reached her eyes and removed ten years from her face.
She pointed down the hill to the opposite side of the road. ‘See that blue door? That’s the Tea Cosy Café; it’s usually quite busy but our Dawn will make sure you are well looked after. I recommend the jacket potatoes.’

The high street in Middle Priory was quiet. I walked past a gift shop, a butcher boasting organic meat and a fruit and veg shop. The fruit and veg shop had those old-fashioned scales with a silver bowl on the top, and was the sort of place where they choose your produce for you. I saw the shop assistant do that twirly thing to seal the top of a brown bag, and it brought back happy memories of shopping with my gran. I popped into the secondhand bookshop just to get a sniff of the smell of dusty books and the owner reminded me of the shopkeeper in the children’s TV series Mr Benn. It was the one programme my father would tolerate and occasionally sit next to me and watch.

The café was warm and still smelled of breakfast. It was empty apart from an elderly couple sitting at a large rectangular table by the window. They looked like they were having an argument, but when the door closed behind me the sound of the half-hearted bell prompted them to stare.

I wondered if the décor was fruit of a brainstorm among drunken friends – vintage? bistro? fast food? cosy? retro? The owner obviously felt worried about offending any of the con- tributors. The walls were crammed with ‘unique’ art. The prices were more than I paid for my first car but the pictures reminded me of toddlers’ self-portraits. The dark-haired woman behind the counter caught my eye and raised her unkempt eyebrows. I noticed a smudge of something brown above her lip.

About the book...
A young child discovers the solution for falling asleep is not always quiet and silent, like counting slow, slimy snails. Sometimes, a room full of happy dances, shirts in a tie-dyed swirl, and mischief-making sheep are just the ticket!

🐑   🐑   🐑   🐑   🐑

This is the story of one little boy who simply couldn't fall asleep.  Try as he might, it was just out of reach, so he fell on the old standby of counting sheep.  What could be more relaxing?  The soft baa of their calls, the wispy softness of their curls, their adorable faces as they bound through your mental dream scape...the way they party like it's 1999, rampage your underwear drawer, and reread Sheep in a Jeep a hundred times...wait, what?  *double checks book*  Yep, they sure do...apparently these aren't the sluggishly sleepy type of sheep you might have been expecting, but then again, sometimes what we didn't expect works our rather well!

I gotta say, while the rhyming structure of the story felt a tad stretched at times, I still had a blast!  The sheep were definitely not what I was expecting, but hey, I"m with the little guy, they were SO much better than the snails!  (You'll have to read it to find out why!)  I do believe though that outside of their antics and adventurous choices in apparel, the illustrations really stole my heart.  They were ADORABLE, and the dream like quality they were lent with the sometimes-fuzzy-sometimes-crystal-clear images and facials expressions just gave them something MORE.

So, yes...this is definitely one for the kiddos bedtime reading selections, but also a great reminder to all ages of just why sheep are the way to go when it comes to getting a good night's sleep!

Forest River PTA Moms series, Book 2
by
Hilary Grossman

About the book...
Big Little Lies meets Class Mom

The meddling moms of Forest River live for a good scandal. Speculation surrounding Claire Conroy’s sex life has fueled the rumor mill for years. Now, when Claire returns home from a trip to Italy separated from her husband of thirteen years, the imaginations of the Lululemon-clad ladies’ who lunch spin into overdrive. As the gossipmongers create their own scandalous backstory for the separation, blaming Claire’s infidelity, she learns the hard way just how mean mommies can be.

Remember high school?
Remember all the little cliques and gossip, head games and sad tricks, backstabbing and face-to-face lying?  Yeah...now add on a decade or two and BOOM...you've got the PTA mom's you'd never hope to be a part of.   Don't get me wrong, there were a few among them that had their moments, but they were short lived as pretty much none of them had the guts, the hutzpah, the backbone to stand up for themselves, and away from the pack.  I guess it never really gets THAT much easier...when you always want to be one of the "cool" crowd.  Guess that's also why as much as I got the drama of the story, I was also so over it from the get go.

If not for Claire trying to wrangle her way clear and then through this group of pretenders, wannabes, and vindictive mothers, I would have run screaming from the pages.  Her will to get through it all and smile on the other side is what brought be along for the ride. Frankly, if I was a character in the story, I would have shut them down long before things got so sticky because not getting your way sometimes (ladies) is a way of life!  You can't control everything and every one, despite your desire to.  You don't get to say what your truth is and make it stick when in reality, it's so far from the truth that it's laughable.  Ugh!  Sorry, I really just wanted to slap a few of them upside the head and shout GROW UP.

In the end, it is what it is, and while some will be cheering for the "cheerleaders", others will be backing the supposed underdogs.  Which side of the bake sale will you be on?
