Happy Mother's Day...the New Fiction way!

Hi there!
Welcome back to the Mother's Day edition of Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

That's right.  Hats off to Moms everywhere today!  You make the world go round in so many ways and we thank you for all that you do.  Now with the day in mind, I thought I might share with you a sweet little guest post that came by way thanks to Shelby over at Astor + Blue Editions (~waves~).  It's written by Women's Fiction author Andrea Lochen and perfectly enough, shares her take on the TEN most memorable Moms in new Fiction!  Curious?  So was I, hence my decision to share. ^_^  So, ready or not, here they come...

Ten Most Memorable Moms in New Fiction

What better time of year than Mother’s Day to showcase some of the most memorable fictional mothers in some of the best new novels?  From loving, supportive mothers to complex, trailblazing mothers to selfish, vindictive mothers, this list has it all!

1) The Perfect Son by Barbara Claypole White (Lake Union, July 2015)

Ella Fitzwilliam, the mom in THE PERFECT SON, quit a successful career in jewelry design to be full-time parent, mental health coach, and advocate for her son, Harry, who has a soup of issues that include Tourette syndrome. She has devoted 17 years of her life to his therapy, to educating teachers, to being Harry’s emotional rock and giving him the confidence he needs to be Harry. Thanks to her, Harry is comfortable in his own skin, even when people stare. After Ella has a major heart attack in the opening chapter, her love for Harry tethers her to life. But as she recovers, she discovers the hardest parenting lesson of all: to let go.

2) Rodin’s Lover by Heather Webb (Plume, January 2015)

In RODIN’S LOVER, Camille’s mother, Louise Claudel, is spiteful, jealous, and disapproving of Camille’s pursuit to become a female sculptor in the 1880s. She also shows signs of mental illness. Because of this relationship, Camille struggles with all of her female relationships the rest of her life, and ultimately, to prove to her mother that she’s truly talented.

3) Imaginary Things by Andrea Lochen (Astor + Blue Editions, April 2015)

In IMAGINARY THINGS, young single mother Anna Jennings has a unique power that most parents only dream of—the ability to see her four-year-old son’s imagination come to life.  But when David’s imaginary friends turn dark and threatening, Anna must learn the rules of this bizarre phenomenon, what his friends truly represent, and how best to protect him.

4) The Magician’s Lie by Greer Macallister (Sourcebooks, January 2015)

In THE MAGICIAN'S LIE, Arden's mother is remarkable both for what she does and what she doesn't do. As a young woman, she bears a child out of wedlock and runs away with her music teacher, never fearing the consequences. But later in life, her nerve fails her—just when her daughter needs her most.

5) Five Days Left by Julie Lawson Timmer (Putnam, 2014)

In FIVE DAYS LEFT, Mara Nichols is, in some ways, a typical mother: she loves her daughter fiercely, thinks about her constantly and goes to great lengths to balance her high-stress legal career with her daughter’s needs. But there are two ways in which Mara isn't typical at all. First, she adopted her daughter from India, making good on a lifelong promise to rescue a baby from the same orphanage where Mara herself lived decades ago. And second, when Mara is diagnosed with a fatal, incurable illness that will render her unable to walk, talk or even feed herself, she has to make the kind of parenting choice none of us wants to consider—would my child be better off if I were no longer alive?

6) House Broken by Sonja Yoerg (Penguin/NAL, January 2015)

In HOUSE BROKEN, Helen Riley has a habit of leaving her grown children to cope with her vodka-fueled disasters. She has her reasons, but they’re buried deep, and stem from secrets too painful to remember and, perhaps, too terrible to forgive.

7) You Were Meant for Me by Yona Zeldis McDonough (Penguin/NAL, 2014)

In YOU WERE MEANT FOR ME, having a baby is the furthest thing from Miranda Berenzweig’s mind.  She’s newly single after a bad break up, and focused on her promotion at work, her friends and getting her life back on track.  Then one frigid March night she finds a newborn infant in a NYC subway and even after taking the baby to the police, can’t get the baby out of her mind.  At the suggestion of the family court judge assigned to the case, Miranda begins adoption proceedings.  But her plans—as well as her hopes and dreams—are derailed when the baby’s biological father surfaces, wanting to claim his child.  The way she handles this unforeseen turn of events is what makes Miranda a truly memorable mother.

8) The Far End of Happy by Kathryn Craft (Sourcebooks Landmark, May 2015)

In THE FAR END OF HAPPY, Ronnie has hung in there as long as she can during her husband's decline into depression, spending issues, and alcoholism and he will not accept her attempts to get him professional help. She is not a leaver, but can't bear for her sons to witness the further deterioration of the marriage. She determines to divorce—and on the day he has promised to move out, he instead arms himself, holes up inside a building on the property, and stands off against police. When late in the day the police ask Ronnie if she’ll appeal to him one last time over the bullhorn, she must decide: with the stakes so high, will she try one last time to save her husband’s life? Or will her need to protect her sons and her own growing sense of self win out?

9) Your Perfect Life by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke (Washington Square Press, 2014)

In YOUR PERFECT LIFE, long-time friends, Rachel and Casey wake up the morning after their twenty year high school reunion to discover they’ve switched bodies. Casey is single with no children before becoming an instant mom to Rachel’s two teenagers and baby. Despite her lack of experience as a parent, and her often comedic missteps with the baby in particular (think: diaper blow outs and sudden sleep deprivation) Casey’s fresh perspective on her new role helps her connect with each of the children in a very different way than Rachel. And when the oldest, Audrey, is almost date raped at her prom, it is Casey’s strength that she draws from an experience in her own past that ultimately pulls Audrey through. Although it is hard for Rachel to watch her best friend take care of Audrey when she so desperately wants to, she realizes that Casey can help her daughter in a way she can’t. And Casey discovers she might have what it takes to be a mom to her own children someday.

10) The Life List by Lori Nelson Spielman (Bantam, 2013)

Elizabeth Bohlinger, the mother in THE LIFE LIST, is actually deceased. But she still has a big presence in her daughter's life—some may say too big! With heartfelt letters, Elizabeth guides her daughter, Brett, on a journey to complete the life list of wishes Brett made when she was just a teen. Like many mothers, Elizabeth has an uncanny ability to see into her daughter's heart, exposing buried desires Brett has long forgotten.

Now I don't know about all of you, but cover wise, I'm a sucker for House Broken and The Life List.  Puppies and books...go figure, right?  Description wise though, I'm still drawn to The Life List, but I gotta say The Perfect Son really struck a chord and Imaginary Things definitely caught my eye.  What say you readers?  Any of the mothers here capture your attention more than the others?

In that same vein of thought, what about the book you're currently reading?  How is the mother portrayed?  Is she someone you'd like as your own, to simply know, or rather avoid at all costs?  The mother in my current read has had to deal with the loss of both her husband and youngest son, while she currently contemplates a marriage to someone she'd rather not know in order to bring order and peace to both their realms.  Dun dun dun.....

Until next time...HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY...and happy reading!

Storybook Saturday: Nanny and Me by Florence Ann Romano

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we are exploring a read that reminds me of Mary Poppins.  How so?  Well, I suppose it’s the simple fact that it deals with Nanny’s and as much as she was magical, mysterious, and wonderful, so is the truth of their world.  So come with me as we discover the role of the Nanny from the eyes of youth.  Today’s book of choice is….

Nanny and Me
By
Illustrated by
Sydni Kruger
9781620867860

This is a peek inside the mysterious world of the Nanny.  It takes things from the children’s point of view and offers us a magical, imaginative adventure as we explore a day in the life of.  I can easily see it being used to reassure little ones that while Mommy and Daddy are away, the Nanny is here to play!  She (or he, because let’s face it…today’s world offers this option to BOTH sexes) will feed them, care for them, teach them things, play games, read them stories, tuck them into bed and basically fill in as their “special friend” until it’s time for Mommy and Daddy to return.  It reminds children that it’s not a sad time before or after but an in-between time to be filled with adventures and love.

I’m not certain how many of you out there reading this will have any firsthand experience with a Nanny, either personally or caring for your own children, but I respect the profession nonetheless.  It can’t possibly be easy to care for another’s child in a one on one environment without growing attached only to know that one day, they will be grown and your services will have to be put to use in another’s household.  The transition for the children (on my side at least) would seem less painful than that of the Nanny but then again, if you’ve done it for years, perhaps it gets easier and you’re able to separate the two.  More power to you Mary Poppins’ of the world! Moving forward…

Author Florence Ann Romano

This being a storybook, I would be remiss if I failed to mention the illustrations.  The images literally GLOW off the page lending the story an additional layer of warmth and friendliness to spare.  Mommy and Daddy are shown in a caring light as are the activities that keep them busy during the day in order to provide for their family.  The Nanny is shown equally friendly and bright as she takes her little charges here and there, to and fro, and makes certain they have a wondrous day.  When their imaginations take flight at bedtime, you can’t help but get caught up in the castle among the marshmallow clouds.

Recommended read for all ages but perhaps especially those that experience this world first hand.  As I said, it could definitely be used to help explain who the new addition to the family is as well as lay to rest any fears of parents leaving for any reason other than necessity.  With wonderful illustrations and a story that plays itself out nicely, it’s a great addition to any library, personal, classroom, or community.

Lights, Camera, ACTION!: The Woman in the Movie Star Dress by Praveen Asthana

Why hello stranger.
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're doing it up old Hollywood style as we adopt a persona or two to suite our own purposes.  How so?  Ah, wouldn't you like to know...and know you shall thanks to the book at the center of our spotlight today.  The bookish star of the day is a Fiction read filled with mystery, suspense, dodgey behaviour, femme fatales, and crimes most heinous.  In other words, it'll keep you turning pages for many a reason; some of which I'm about to illuminate.  So, grab your red carpet ready look and practice your most sultry stare.  Today's book of choice is....

by
9780692367445
Doublewood Press

About the book...
A young woman comes to Hollywood to escape her past. She finds work in a vintage clothing store that sells clothes used in the movies. One day she discovers a way to transfer human character through these vintage clothes, and she uses this ability to transform from a lonely, insecure young woman to a glamorous heartbreaker. But she also discovers that with the good comes the bad as character flaws are transferred too. She begins to worry: what if one of the vintage clothes she has sold to some unsuspecting customer had been previously worn by a deeply troubled soul? One day her fears become crystallized—intrigued by a man who comes asking about a beautiful scarlet dress she has recently sold, she looks into its history and discovers a secret that terrifies her. So begins a quest to find the scarlet dress complicated by a budding romance and the threads of her past, which intervene like trip wires. Emotions run high, and in the background the quickening drumbeat of the race to find the scarlet dress, potent as a loose, loaded weapon.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The idea that we can share another's chi or essence through the imprint left on the clothes they wore is not exactly new, but to the degree that it is carried out here, it's a first read for me.  Do I believe it can happen?  That one can simply put on the clothes of another worn during a highly emotional time and POOF, you are "them" to some degree?  Hmm...can't say I see it happening in real life, but it works for the novel.  (Before you go stoning me, I do believe it to the extent of how wearing a certain outfit can make you more confident, feel more delicate, have you prepared to kick butt, or any other myriad of feelings, but a lot of that has to due with how you feel in the clothes AND the power of suggestion.)
Genevieve was such a great leading lady, whether she knew it or not.  She had looks that weren't overtly distracting, a pleasant demeanor, brains to go with the package, and a smile that would light up a room.  Only problem?  A lack of confidence.  Easily fixed, right?  More so than you ever imagined.  A kind word here, a compliment there, and a borrowed dress or two from some of Hollywood's biggest femme fatales sure take this girl a LONG way.  We're talking girl-next-door to watch-out-world-here-I-come!  They bring her out of her shell and allow her to do things she'd never have considered before but that's what playing a role does.  It takes you out of the every day and places you in the spotlight.  Problem is not everyone was meant for that particular role and when push comes to shove, Ms. Genevieve is walking a dangerous tight rope with the chance to loose everyone and everything dear to her in an instant.  Will she man up, owning her wants and desires while letting go of the past for better or worse?  Or will she cave and continue to hide behind the mask of those powerhouses that came before her?  Only one way to find out....
The story is filled with a few threads to follow and while they may cross, they don't become a tangled web of disaster.  The strongest undercurrent though is LOVE.  Whether for family, friends, lovers, or soul mates, love is what leads them astray as well as to their happy endings.  Genevieve explores its darkness as well as its light, discovering sides to herself and others she holds dear, that she never imagined.  It's really eye opening.  In fact, I was completely blindsided as a particular revelation made itself known once and for all.  I had been right there with our lead, ready to fight, then defend, then fight once again.  The final scenes though?  They really take the cake!  A true accomplishment that were the tale true, would certainly haunt a particular someone for the rest of his days.
Now, as is the case with any movie, the characters are what make this truly memorable.  Everyone from our leading lady to her office mate and emerging friend Gretchen, Renzo the mysterious person stalking the red dress in question to Cameron an ex-con that has a bigger role to play than you might think, they all help the book cast its spell over you as you try to figure out all the connections before they fall neatly in place.
The only drawback I can even mention would be in relation to the cover.  Now don't get me wrong, it is effectively striking and certainly beautiful to behold, but what's with the hidden hat?  It's actually an accessory our leading lady favors for a good portion of the book and truth be told, I didn't even notice it gracing the head of the cover model until I was posting the pic for this post.  I suppose since it plays a lesser role, it doesn't need to be front and center but then again, if it's going to be THAT out of sight, why include it in the image at all?  Just a thought; no more, no less.
All in all, a great read that will keep you turning pages well into the night.  You'll come for the story but stay for the vivaciousness of it all.  From the murder mystery to the romantic entanglements, twisted truths to secrets best left undisturbed, the parade of Mr. Right-Now's versus Mr. Happily-Ever-After, and of course the glitz and glamour of the city itself!  The shiny lights of Hollywood cast their spell over it all and leave you breathless with all the revelations.  Recommended read for Fiction and Noir fans for the overall story as well as the mysteries stirring within.  The only caution I would give is that it be older teens through adults for the target age range, due to somewhat gratuitous drug usage, drinking, and a promiscuous nature on display thanks to a few choice moments of spiritual transference.
Autumn in the City of Angels by Kirby Howell
Hi there!
Welcome back to the site that aims to please the bookish side of you, Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're taking a look between the pages of a book I finish in no time flat.  Now before you ask, it wasn't because it was a short story or a picture book; this Young Adult gem clocks in at just over 300 pages.  No, the reason for my hasty finish was because I simply could NOT put it down!  Good thing too, considering it's the first of a trilogy...*adds to wish list*. (*fist pump*)  Anywho, before I get TOO sidetracked with my own enthusiasm, allow me to properly introduce today's book of choice...
Book One in the Autumn Trilogy
by
97809890364005
Streetlights Publishing
About the book...
A plague of epic proportion sweeps the globe, leaving less than one percent of the world’s population immune. Among the living is Autumn Winters, the teenage daughter of a famous actress.  When Autumn’s parents don’t come home and the city is overtaken by a dangerous faction, she goes into hiding with a small group of underground survivors.  They’re led by a mysterious young man who harbors an unearthly secret, and with whom Autumn feels a deep connection.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A quick summary...a post-apocalyptic story of just what would happen if less than 1% of the population were to survive a deadly plague; in two words...utter chaos.
Now for the LONG VERSION....

The story sweeps you away right from the start as we meet Autumn on a usual afternoon, heading for the coffee shop to have a cuppa with her bestie.   Cue news reports of an epidemic flu, being referred to as the Crimson Plague, spreading faster than wildfire through a tinderbox, clear around the world.  Less than 24 hours later, there is only a handful of people still alive, and even less that know that each other exist...until now.   Autumn has been lucky thus far living atop the Waterfall Tower, her picturesque home pre-apocalypse, but luck can only take you so far in this newly emerging world and fate is not the only thing that wants its say.  There are those that would lead the survivors with promises of new beginnings and family,  and there are also those wielding these same ideals to bend the wills of the remaining to their own power filled dreams.  Which side will Autumn choose and to what end?  It's all inside waiting for you to discover...

Story wise, I was pleasantly surprised by the overall tale.  I didn't expect to like Autumn's experiences so much and once certain things were revealed in regards to Grey, I was fully prepared to raise an eyebrow towards the heavens and write the rest off.  SO GLAD I DIDN'T!  I think it's because the author made everything easy to step into.  The circumstances weren't ideal and the timing was certainly anything but perfect but you could really see it all happening as laid out before you.  There was never a time of stopping to ponder why on earth something was the way it was.  It was very easy to take everything at face value while being completely immersed in a world somewhat apart from your own (but only just).  The way events unfolded, be it relationships, power struggles, or revelations, made you feel like you were right there, for better (Grey, Autumn, the Waterfall Tower...need I say more?) or worse (the harrowing scenes from the radio station).  Moving forward....

I loved how the authors kept the characters, reactions, and general situations REAL.  You could feel Autumn's anxiety and loneliness at the same time her will to survive was kicking in (The Front may seem welcoming but so does the lure fish before it eats its prey).  Her fierce determination to overcome everything thrown in her path was  empowering.  Her selflessness touched your heart (leaving The Underground to try to save Ben and Rissi despite what they might do to her in turn) while her willingness to wear her feelings on her sleeve (honesty with Ben AND Grey) made it clear that hardness in spirit doesn't mean you're untouchable.  Needless to say, she's someone worth knowing.  As for the other stars of the show...

Ben is a great guy, smart, funny, entertaining, but is he THE guy?  The jury is out for now.  Rissi is the sweetest little girl ever and I love how open she is despite all that she's had to endure at such a young age.  Connie is a great choice for a mother figure in this time of need.  Her BIG heart has enough love for them all and her kindness is abundant.  Then we have Todd, Lydia, and Grey.  They can't be separated in my mind simply because of the truths we've uncovered about them all and yet my feelings towards each differ.  Todd meant well, but he could be a hardheaded butt.  Lydia was certainly a talented medical wiz but Bedside Manners 101 was a class she failed to attend (explained later on, but still).  Grey is simply, Grey.  *sigh*  No, really.  He's a great guy (term used loosely, again because of the skeletons in his closet) and I loved watching him unravel thanks to the feelings churning just below his ever perfect surface.  It'll warm you from your head to your toes and once the realization of what it all means arrives, it means THAT much more.  I can't wait to see what happens after that jaw dropping end....talk about a cliff hanger!

So, in summation, because honestly, I could keep going and going, it's a great start to a promising trilogy that has a little bit of everything.  Post apocalyptic world?  Check!  Danger and adventure?  Check!  Good guys and bad guys (in all senses of the terms)?  Check!  Love triangle?  Check!  Fab lead worth knowing?  Check!  Life, love, loss, and heart to spare?  Check!  Like I said, it has it all and all you have to do to discover it is turn the page....

BLOG TOUR: Side Trip to Kathmandu by Marie Moore - Guest Post + Contest!

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're kicking off the week with a blog tour stop over courtesy of Lori over at Great Escapes Book Tours!  (~waves~) It stars the third installment of the Sidney Marsh cozy mystery series, the first of which I featured RIGHT HERE, once upon a time.  I would have been all over this one for a review but alas, one can not say yes to EVERY request that passes through (not for lack of wanting, but lack of time in the sought time frame!) but I did manage to score a date that I could shine the spotlight on it for all of you.  You know, because then YOU can read it and spill some secrets about it to ME.  *hehe*  Ready or not, here comes today's featured title and blog tour guest...

About the book...
Sidney Marsh’s job as a New York travel agent is on the line. On her last two tours, she and her colleague Jay ended up smack in the middle of murder and mayhem. Their sleuthing sideline did not endear them to their employer, Itchy Feet Travel, so naturally they are relieved when their wealthy friend Brooke requests their presence on a no expense spared tour of India and Nepal. Another agency has made the arrangements, so all they need do is sit back and enjoy the ride. Well, not quite all. Brooke has enlisted them to keep a sharp eye on their fellow travelers, all “friends” who have grown rich from the demise of others. After surviving an attempt on her life, Brooke is certain the culprit must be one of the five: a handsome Scotsman, a Bollywood actress, an investment banker, a Parisian filmmaker, or a twice widowed blonde. Many of the tour accommodations prove to be as dodgy as the reputations of the travelers themselves. After one of the members of the moving house party dies of an apparent heart attack, everyone’s nerves are on edge. Sidney can hardly be blamed for assuming a deadly game is afoot … or for falling for Adam, the doting Scotsman. Now, if only she can unmask the killer before the killer beats her to the punch.

See what I mean?
ALL OVER IT.

From the name of the travel agency to the suspicious yet "doting" Scotsman, there are elements to draw in a myriad of readers and if it adds up to anything like the first adventure, you definitely won't be sorry.

Now, one can't simply have a spotlight and nothing more when you have this much interest in a title, now can you?  Glad you agree.  With that sentiment in mind, I give you a SPECIAL GUEST POST from the author to me, I mean US!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GUEST POST:  Author Marie Moore
Welcome to the world of Sidney Marsh, intrepid travel agent, adventurer, and girl detective!
Creating and writing Sidney’s adventures is really just so much fun for me that I can only compare it to the little girl thrill of playing dolls, something I loved to do as a child.  But this is a game of pretend writ large.
Sidney, like me, is a Mississippi girl from a small town “where I can count all the stoplights in my head if I try” thrust into the larger world of New York City and beyond as she works leading tours for her agency, Itchy Feet Travel.  Sidney was first introduced to cozy mystery fans in 2012 in Shore Excursion, on a cruise you never want to go on, because you might not make it back alive!
From there, Sidney led us to Africa, in Game Drive, where she quickly learns, as Sarah Wisseman said, that “humans can be far more dangerous than animals”.
Now Sidney is back with a new adventure, Side Trip to Kathmandu, taking us with her to Northern India and Nepal.  This time Sidney’s job is on the line.  Her boss at the agency, Mr. Silverman, has warned her that “on the trips you’ve been leading lately, stuff happens.  Bad stuff.  People die.  It may just be bad luck, it may not be your fault, but somehow it happens.  And if your luck doesn’t change, and I mean right now, you are out of a job. This is your last chance, Sidney, my lawyers are screaming.  Itchy Feet Travel can’t take any more unfortunate accidents.  It’s bad for business.”
So Sidney and Jay, her best friend and colleague, set out for India, to escort a luxury trip for their good friend and wealthiest client, Brooke Shyler, and her jet-setting buddies.  This time Sidney hopes for a clean trip, a safe trip, with no “unfortunate accidents”.  But of course, where Sidney is involved somehow that’s just not happening.
The characters of my mysteries, Sidney, Jay, Brooke, Mr. Silverman, Diana, and the others, once created, take on a life of their own.  I don’t know if this is true for other authors or not, but it certainly is for me.  They live in my head, popping up with stuff when I least expect it…when I’m stuck in traffic, maybe, or in the grocery aisle at Kroger. None of them are copied from people I know in my real life, for I think that basing characters on your nearest and dearest is somehow unfair, and limiting to the imagination.
Sidney’s adventures thus far, are all set in exotic locations in the hope that you will enjoy the exotic destinations she visits.  In my own work as a travel agent I have visited all these marvelous places and it is my hope that through Sidney’s eyes you can visit them too.  It’s important to me to get the details right and give you the feel of actually having been there.
Writing this series is hard work, of course, but it is a game I love to play.  Like chess, the movement of one piece, one character, affects all the others, and ultimately, the outcome of the game.  In creating the story, I try to be fair with the reader, leaving enough clues around so that the puzzle can be solved if you read them correctly.  Some readers figure it out early on, others not until the last. Whether you solve it or not, my hope is that you will enjoy the experience and leave whatever your cares may be alone for a little while to step into Sidney’s world.
I hope you’ll go along with us on this latest adventure. Come out and play!  Come join the game!  I promise it will be fun!
