How Can We Help Our Kids Soul Treasure Shine Bright?

Thank you Gina and your Insatiable Readers for having me on your blog! Today I would love to share with you two fun ways we can help our kid’s soul treasure shine bright!

But first let me quickly introduce you to the concept of our soul treasure. Every one of us is filled with treasure – these are our inner strengths! Our innate capabilities and talents that we are all born with. Our soul treasure shines bright when we feel joyful, connected, loved and safe. But as we know, the world can sometimes be a wild and woolly place. Upsetting things can happen that are outside our control, like we all experienced during the covid years.

So, what can we do to help navigate our lives with joy, even when we are faced with challenges? We can remember that we have a treasure-chest of inner strengths inside us, that we can tap into, which will help us navigate and ENJOY our lives. In my picture book, My Soul Treasure, I introduce you to seven of our soul treasures. Our rubies, opals, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, amethysts and pearls. Each gem represents an inner strength we have and is depicted in stunning double-pages of vibrant colourful illustrations.

So let’s explore two of our soul treasures today and find out HOW we can help those soul gems shine bright.

First – we have soul rubies. These are our cosiness gems inside our soul. You might be wondering why being cosy is an inner strength. Well, the significance of embracing cosiness as an inner strength can’t be overstated. Just picture how it feels when you are snug, warm and content. You feel safe and calm, right? And when we feel safe and protected, we feel less anxious, less stressed. So, in a way, cosiness is an antidote to feeling anxiety. It diminishes stress and promotes the feeling of tranquillity. If you are interested in delving deep into the physical and emotional benefits of being cosy, there is abundant research.1 One of my favourite books on the topic is ‘The Little Book of Hygge’ by Mike Wiking.2 Now, let’s move onto the fun part – how can we help our children nurture their soul rubies, their precious cosiness gems?

One fun suggestion is to encourage the creation of cubbies! By building pillow forts or creating a tent of blankets and pillows in your living room. My kids just love making cubbies. They bring in their favourite teddy bears, torches and books to read and could spend hours in there just being cosy and snug! Although it momentarily makes a mess of our living room, the benefits of allowing our kids to spend time making cubbies is invaluable. It not only teaches them about the importance of self-care but equips them with tools and coping mechanisms they can carry through life. As they grow, they will remember that by embracing moments of cosiness and warmth, they internalise the essence of safety and develop a vital coping mechanism. Then, in times of need, they will instinctively choose to seek solace in a snug environment, to restore their well-being.

Secondly – let’s explore our soul opals, our dazzling creativity gems inside our soul! In My Soul Treasure, the vibrant orange illustrations leap off the page, igniting a sense of exhilaration, boundless possibilities and the unlimited potential we each have, to shape our lives. At times, we may feel stuck in a rut or feel like we are trapped in mundane routines. Our kids might feel overwhelmed by school or life changes. How can our soul opals help them in these moments? Well, by tapping into our inner strength of creativity an amazing transformation can take place. It unveils a new perspective and we can start to see the myriad of possibilities or choices that are available to us. Again, lots of research supports harnessing creativity to help overcome anxiety and heal from trauma.3 When we express ourselves through creative activities, stress and anxiety dissipates, making way for positive emotions to flourish, like joy and optimism. So, how can we help our kids to be creative and nurture their soul opals?

We can encourage them to immerse themselves in drawing, painting, making artwork or even whimsical ‘bits and bob’ box creations. A favourite creative activity in our home is free-style cooking! This might sound a little bit messy, but the temporary chaos pales in comparison to the sheer delight your kids will experience. My kids love choosing different ingredients from the fridge and pantry - flours, cocoa powder, crushed up cereals, mashed fruits - you name it! (I keep watch to make sure it’s all edible!). They enjoy mixing it all up, pouring it into a tray and baking it in the oven. Surprisingly they often actually enjoy eating their unique creations! Through this process, not only do they get to enjoy eating what they have made, but they learn the profound value of being an active participant in crafting their unique expressions. They get to feel a sense of autonomy, which helps to empower them and teaches them that being creative is a valuable coping mechanism we can utilise, whenever we feel stuck or anxiety arises.

So there you have it – cubby houses and free-style cooking! Two fun ways we can help our kid’s soul treasure shine bright. I hope you and your kids enjoy giving these a try!

RRR presents... The Highlander's Bridal Bid by Nicole Locke - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!

Hiya, friends!
We're BLITZ-ing it out today as we join the Rachel's Random Resources celebration spreading the word about a new Historical Romance ready and waiting for your reading pleasure! The sub-cat is Highlander Romance, and, yes, I'm going to say it, I don't read this particular branch that often, but this one, I'm glad I did! Ladies and gents, get ready for a match many (MANY) years in the making...

The Highlander's Bridal Bid
by
Nicole Locke
Mills & Boon | Harlequin Books

About the book...

Finding his future wife
Means revisiting his past…

After making a pact with his brother to find a bride by the year’s end, warrior Camron of Clan Graham faces his toughest battle yet: to win defiant Anna, his first love. She’s fiercely protective of her family and her independence, so Highlander Camron must prove to Anna that she’s more than just a bet—and that he’s a man she can trust with her safety and her heart!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We've got twins...smexy Highlander twins, to be exact.
We've got sisters...one of marrying age, the other supposedly on the shelf.
We've got long held feelings barely concealed, a story where the guy falls first, a little age gap, and to spice things up, a friendly competition... to the altar.
Have I struck your reading fancy yet? 😉
Watching this one unfold was a totally necessary, and desired escape... because life right now is definitely not offering that outlet! Anywho...Camron was a dream. Honestly, they might have been twins, but their personalities set them apart...as did the notice of his lady love! It's all in the details, and Camron was a fine line if ever there was one brought to life in hu-MAN form. Him falling first and falling so hard was endearing. He didn't press his luck with Anna, but worked at getting her to let her defenses down... at least until there was so much sparking between them that it was impossible to ignore! 😍
You can't really blame Anna for her hesitation, after all her heart has been through... but knowing him as she does, should definitely count for something, and while it doesn't hurt that he's easy on the eyes, she needs to trust with her heart before letting the handsome visage before her overrule her head. As we get to know her, we get a better feel for the reasons she keeps her self to her self, locking away her heart from the heartache the world has on offer. We see just how deeply she cares, feels, and loves.... and hope that she can find that strength of emotions reciprocated from another... but know that there's someone surely perfect for her just around the corner.
Because she’s always working on the next story!
RELEASE WEEK REVIEW: Disturbance by Jenna Clake
 Hi there friends!
Back again with another title to tantalize, tease, and perhaps grab the open spot on your never ending TBR. This time, it comes to us via W. W. Norton & Company and features the first Fiction release from author Jenna Clake. Potential trigger warning for some readers in regards to mental and physical abuse, though the on page description does not go into details, but be warned nonetheless. Diving right into things, here comes today's book of choice...
Jenna Clake
W. W. Norton & Company
About the book...
A spellbinding, genre-bending debut follows a woman’s attempt to heal from an abusive relationship―with the help of black magic.
As the sun sets on a feverishly hot July evening, a young woman spies on her teenage neighbor, transfixed by what looks like an occult ritual intended to banish an ex-boyfriend. Alone in a new town and desperate to expel the claustrophobic memories of her own ex that have followed, the narrator decides to try to hex herself free from her past. She falls in with the neighbor and her witchy friend, exploring nascent supernatural powers as the boundaries of reality shift in and out of focus. But when the creaks and hums of her apartment escalate into something more violent, she realizes that she may have brought her boyfriend’s presence―whether psychological or paranormal―back to haunt her.
With astonishing emotional depth and clarity, Disturbance explores the fallout of abuse. Propulsive and wry, this razor-sharp debut twists witchcraft and horror into a powerful narrative of one woman’s struggle to return to herself.
Maybe it's me.
Maybe it's my mood.
Maybe it's my current life struggles, the time of year, or small snatches of time in grabbing for reading at the moment.
Maybe though, just maybe...it just wasn't the right one for me.
It happens, you know?
Sometimes as much as you think a book looks/sounds interesting, it just doesn't pan out for you, and unfortunately, that was the case for me here.
We've a woman trying to escape her past, but in some ways holding on to it firmly with an iron grip. We've the introduction of youth with all their hopes and dreams, and yet they're being viewed more as a mirror than a window. We've a touch of dark arts dabbling, yet whether or not it's actually DOING anything, affecting her surroundings or situation, is more up to the reader than actual evidence.
So reading this for me left me in a conundrum. I couldn't NOT finish once I began in the hopes that my trepidation was resolved along the way, and yet I couldn't know if it would actually happen, making this probably one of the shortest books that has taken me the longest to read. Some may applaud her efforts, and take some delight from the rituals attempted. Others, such as myself, may find greater relief once she finally admits to herself what's not working, and seeks something else.
Long story short, while it may not be for everyone (because no book truly is whether we would like it to be or not), it may be for you. If it appeals, give it a go... and feel free to stop back or catch me on social media to share your thoughts!
AWARENESS TOUR: Pirate & Penguin by Mike Allegra - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!
Joining the Picture Book fun with The Children's Book Review as we take part in the tour for an adorable high seas adventure about the life of a pirates, a penguin, and an unlikely friendship. Ladies and gents, prepare to set sail for bookish fun and take a gander at today's book of choice...
Written by Mike Allegra
Illustrated by Jenn Harney
Ages 4+ | 32 Pages
Publisher: Page Street Kids (2023)
 ISBN-13: 9781645677123
About the book...
What happens when a pirate, hoping for a parrot, stumbles upon a bird of a duller plumage?
Pirate doesn’t know that Penguin is a penguin. But any bird can sit on a shoulder and squawk “shiver me timbers”…right?
Laugh along with Pirate and Penguin in this high seas tale of mistaken identity and find out whether they’ll find friendship before somebody walks the plank.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Do you like pirates?
Do you like penguins?
Did you ever imagine them starring in a story together?
Then you're in for a treat!

We've got a seasoned Pirate looking for a parrot 🦜 friend...in all the wrong places, and the wrong climate... but it's not merely to complete his captain look. He wants a ship mate, and a friend. I mean, you sail the seven seas solo looking for treas-ARRRR and try saying you're not a little lonely. It happens to the best of us, but it doesn't do any good if we find that potential friend and try to change them to fit our ideal either.... hence the penguin 🐧 sporting parrot colored plumage. We have to see them for who (and in this case what) they are, accept them as is, and build a friendship around those similarities and differences... something our pirate friend begins to understand.

Along with the charming story filled with smiles, laughter, and wonderful messages, we have the fun-tastic illustrations depicting every angle of their encounter along the way. From the impromptu meeting to the ill-fated attempt at shoulder perching (webbed feet weren't made for it apparently), and everything in between, there's not a page turned where there isn't something to remark on, smile over, or gaze at... including the under cover!

A great pick for story time or any time with appeal for audiences from the tall to the small!

RRR presents... A Midnight Kiss on Ever After Street by Jaimie Admans - REVIEW!

The clock is about to strike twelve..
Will true love come calling, or will another would be princess lose a set of otherwise memorable shoes?

Ladies and gents, come with me as we venture down Ever After Street and into a town that breathes magic into daily life, where fairytale dreams are realty, and the castle on the hill might just hold as much power as true love's kiss. May I present, another Rachel's Random Resources tour and today's ebook of choice...

A Midnight Kiss on Ever After Street
by
Jaimie Admans

About the book...

A picture-perfect town; a place where dreams come true. Welcome to Ever After Street...

Will a kiss at midnight change her life forever?

Sadie Winters has spent her whole life doing as she’s told. But when her overbearing aunt forbids her from going to the farewell ball at the beloved local castle, Sadie has had enough!

One magical makeover, one midnight curfew, and wearing a dress of her own creation, Sadie is unrecognizable as Ever After Street's shy seamstress.

Sadie might dream of meeting a handsome prince but the only person to cross her path is Witt – the slightly awkward estate agent intending to sell the castle and dash Sadie’s dreams forever.

As the clock strikes midnight, Sadie and Witt share a magical kiss and Sadie knows her heart is in serious danger. Surely Witt must feel the same way…? Sadie can't hang around to find out.

But as reality dawns the next day, and fate brings Witt to Sadie’s door again, Sadie realises that her mystery estate agent prince has absolutely no idea who she is!

Sadie can’t forget their midnight kiss, but is she brave enough to change her life and find love along the way…?

💜    💘    💜    💘    💜    💘    💜

Oh my goodness, this was so cute!

It's like finding Cinderella's glass slipper to be your perfect size.  It's like discovering the Beast gifted you his library. It's like finding Rapunzel's tower is no longer a prison, but a peaceful hideaway. It's like hearing the first strains of a waltz, and no longer fearing your two left feet. It's like bits and pieces of all your favorite fairytale stories, cobbled together by a magical shoemaker, sewn with threads of love, and fashioned into a story that could live in our own here and now.

Sadie was a gem 💎 and her adventure into the castle 🏰 and the heart of an unexpected "prince" was so the stuff dreams are made of. Grant it, we'd have loved the happily-ever-after without the drama, but that's not reality, and those ups and downs make for a better story, and a stronger bond in the end.  I felt so much for her, and how she was struggling, yet she kept such a shiny outlook, and never gave up.  She was so kind hearted, and, quite honestly, took a much higher road than I might have been able to. Witt was a ball of awkwardness, wrapped in a shiny cover that was just too endearing. Grant it, he could be mutton-headed and the lack of communication, and copious amounts of secret keeping, didn't aid in the HEA being realized any sooner, but it did make us realize just how much he's been through, and that he deserved to find his yellow brick road as much as any other.

A lovely Contemporary Romance filled with just the right amount of magic, mystery, and love to carry us through the hard times to the skies of blue... much like a certain dress 👗 someone wore to a particularly fancy party. Ever After Street would definitely be a place of love to fall into, and I hope that there might be more tales to tell for the other resident characters in books to come!

Where will YOU be caste?: Leo the Leper and the Senseless World by Matt Terrill - SPOTLIGHT!

Hey guys!
Yup, I'm still here, and though life has been a cruel mistress of late, the great reading keeps on rolling in. Take today's title in the BOOK SPOTLIGHT...it comes to us via the author himself, and, from the sound of things, definitely gives that Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Divergent, and probably a few others not on the tip of my tongue 😉 YA dystopian novel series feel to things, and really, who are we kidding? We love them all! So, let's check out a little more about the title making its way front and center today...

by
Matt Terrill

Released Date: January 7, 2023

About the book...

In a society where people are sorted into castes based on which senses they don’t have,16-year-old Leo is in the lowest tier for being nose-blind, taste-blind, and partially numb. What’s worse than being called a leper? The nonstop sensism is wearing him down.

While researching a plague that caused sense-loss for 95% of the world, he discovers a strange spot on a map where everyone is unaffected. He’s convinced they’re hiding something.

With few supplies, his pal Sam and their off-and-on friend Hux join him on a thousand mile quest for a cure. Along the way, they must also avoid leper hunters, sneak through hostile elite cities, and sidestep the chaos of leper shantytowns.

What could go wrong? Just about everything.

RRR presents... A Courtesan’s Worth by Felicity George - REVIEW!

Time to step back in time and indulge in a Historical Romance, currently touring with Rachel's Random Resources. It's a book that takes a closer look at a type of woman that was often looked down upon in her time, and what the transformative power of love can do. Sound good? Ah, well there's plenty more drama where that came from! Ladies and gents, today's ebook of choice and blog tour guest...

A Courtesan’s Worth
by
Felicity George

About the book...

A mistress cannot marry for love...

As one of the famous Preece sisters, Kitty is the most sought-after courtesan in London. But with the vicious Duke of Gillingham scaring away any man who looks her way, securing a new arrangement with a wealthy gentleman will be no easy feat. Kitty's only hope to find someone suitable is through her loyal and cherished friend, the Reverend Sidney Wakefield.

Sidney has devoted his life to the church, but it was never by choice. He is a writer and Kitty his lmuse. As he is roped into Kitty's plotting, he begins to realise that protecting her from the malevolent Duke comes at a price - and it might mean losing Kitty to someone else entirely.

As Kitty and Sidney try to find a way out, it becomes clear that years of friendship have developed into something deeper. Except that they are from different worlds and Kitty's heart has never been hers to give away...

You know, I went into this book expecting one thing, and getting not only that, but much more.

I wanted a Historical Romance escape because, let's face it, life can really get you down sometimes, and jumping into someone else's story is my kind of adventure! Getting to know Kitty and her sisters was eye-opening. Catching the favor of going Sidney wasn't merely happenstance, but fate. Seeing these two eventually come together, knowing the odds, was heartwarming... but watching it all fall apart was heart-stopping. My breath was held when all truly seemed lost, and the "bad guy" seemed to achieve the upper hand, but I was brought back to life once again when the dust settled and those we had faith in proved it placed wisely. Yes, my friends, it was a delight to read for many reasons, all of which are noteworthy, but I must say, the surprises didn't stop at story's end!

I'm one of those readers that actually reads the author's notes as well, and this one I found rather interesting! Unbeknownst to me, the characters presented herein have their footing not simply in fiction, but in real life! Darling Ada-Marie was inspired by someone very close to the author, while Kitty and her sisters got some of their history, gumption, and forward thinking from another infamous woman of the times. I guess I never really thought about that aspect of things within this genre. I mean, ladies of the night aren't a new concept, but how they acted, were presented, and treated, certainly changed throughout history.

All in all, a great pick for Historical Romance fans that like characters with gumption, a love that defies the odds, and bad guys that get their comeuppance in surprisingly delightful ways.
