Good Grief! The Making of a Halloween Tradition...

Hi guys and gals!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers, the place to be this Halloween if you're ready for some bookish fun.

Yesterday, we indulged in the scary, creepy side of the season, but today, we're exploring a story that went from TV special to annually watched classic.  Get ready to break out your best Snoopy dance, because it's time to greet today's seasonal book of choice...

The Making of a Television Classic

Good grief!
Our favorite blockhead and the gang are back in that timeless classic about a boy, his dog, a few so called friends, and the voice of one that believes in the sincerity of a pumpkin patch to draw the autumnal equivalent of the big SC.

I don't know about you and yours, but in my household there are a few standards around the holidays and for Halloween, watching It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown has always been one of them.  Seeing it through the eyes of a child versus an adult provides a very different experience though still entertaining overall.  As a wee one, we get lost in the purity of Linus' believes, the fun of tricks-or-treats, Charlie Brown's hilarious attempt at making a ghost costume, and of course, Snoopy stealing the show as the World War I flying ace.  As an adult, we see some of the same but also how Charlie Brown is constantly ostracized by his peers, the way the kids seem to pick on anyone the least bit different and the absurdity of Snoopy actually flying his doghouse through the skies while chasing the Red Baron.  The real magic of it all is in how it marries together in the end...the real and the fantasy, the strength in belief with reality...and the fact that it can bring generations together for some quality time in front of the tube year after year.

Truth be told, this isn't merely a celebratory book that illustrates the animated feature in written form, but the story BEHIND the story.  For example, did you know that this memorable special wasn't created to realize a lifelong dream but on the spur of the moment when in search of another blockbuster to follow up the Christmas phenom?  Or how about the reason that the characters sound different from special to special and why one might sound like a very young version of a BEP songstress you know and love?   And that my friends is just the beginning.  It's a special tribute to a TV special that's become an annual tradition as well as all those that aided in its creation.

A recommended read for all you true blue Peanuts fans or sign toting Great Pumpkin believers.  Learn the rhyme and reason behind all your favorite scenes and characters while taking a walk down memory lane this Halloween.

More than you bargained for...Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're posting a bit late in the day, but it's totally on purpose.  It goes with the CREEPY, SPOOKY, downright SCARY read we're spotlighting in celebration of the pending holiday.  TODAY the uber creepy, tomorrow a classic for all.  (No, I shan't spoil the fun...you'll have to wait.)  Now, let's get on with the show, or should I say show-ROOM.  Yes, I did in fact say our selection was unusual and that's in more ways then one.  Grab your nightlights and keep a hold of your credit cards, it's time to meet today's book of choice...

Grady Hendrix

Quirk Books

About the book....
Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Columbus, Ohio. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring wardrobes, shattered Brooka glassware, and vandalized Liripip sofa beds—clearly, someone or something is up to no good. To unravel the mystery, five young employees volunteer for a long dusk-till-dawn shift—and they encounter horrors that defy imagination. Along the way, author Grady Hendrix infuses sly social commentary on the nature of work in the new twenty-firstcentury economy.

A traditional haunted house story in a contemporary setting (and full of current fears), Horrorstör comes conveniently packaged in the form of a retail catalog, complete with illustrations of ready-to-assemble furniture and other, more sinister accessories. We promise you’ve never seen anything quite like it!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They're right you know.
You HAVEN'T seen anything quite like this...and I highly doubt you ever will.
Amy is a fantastic lead.  She has flaws and is not afraid to show them.  She hates her job but is able to turn on the sunshine to earn the almighty dollar...grant it, she's barely making ends meet but there's touch of reality we can connect with.  Her boss is out to get her, a real "yes" man that knows all the in's and out's of this big box monstrosity, I mean, store, that they work in.  Who'd have ever thought that at night when the lights go out, the very store that provides creature comforts for the masses would turn into a freaky creature show of its own...oh and it wants you stay, FOREVER.  *o*
The author has a real knack for the build up but also the delivery.  There are plenty of times where the action crosses the line into the squeamish zone, the nightmares come to life a tad too real to be ignored.  I mean really, you probably won't look at your big box retailers the same way again.  That wonderful wardrobe in a box over there, really does look like it could serve as as everlasting resting place if given the chance.  Then we have those fake room set ups with doors and windows that go nowhere, creepy on their own in the first place...but do they REALLY go nowhere?  Have you ever looked?
To summarize, it's a story wrapped up in a catalog binding complete with color options, home delivery, and promises of easy set up.  WARNING:  BEWARE THE EASY SET UP!  Just as not every piece of furniture fits into everyone's decor, this book may or may not initially speak to you....BUT...if you like GOOD stories, filled with CREEPY characters, HORROR filled situations, and a seemingly endless labrynth that just won't let you go, you're in for TREATS in lieu of tricks.
About the Author
Website  ~  Twitter  ~   Facebook  ~  Goodreads
Christina George has worked in publishing for twenty years (give or take). Here’s what this book isn't. It’s not a slam against publishing (though it is broken) and it’s not a slam against authors (though some of them are crazy). This book is not autobiographical though many of the stories are true. No you won’t know which ones, cause it’s more fun to guess, right? George continues to work in publicity and helps authors because at the end of the day she does love books, she loves publishing, and she loves authors. She hopes you’ll enjoy this romp through Kate’s world as much as she enjoyed creating it.
Let's Revisit the Characters...
Some Fun Stuff!
Jaya Nepal! by Martin David Hughes
Hi guys!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're exploring a title that's going to take you to the ends of the earth, shatter your preconceived notions on several world tilting topics and eventually get you back in touch with solid ground, safe and sound.  Does that happen for all our characters?  Umm, I plead the fifth, BUT if you're up to it, join me as we turn the page on our next book of choice....
Martin David Hughes
Simi Books
About the book....
Set against the striking backdrop of South Asia in the early days of the new millennium, Jaya Nepal! is a rollicking mini-epic that takes readers into the bustling, exotic, and colorful world of urban Kathmandu.
Twenty-five-year-old Berkeley grad Benjamin Creed, an idealistic and motivated young recruit, begins his odyssey in a community curiously named Pepsicola Townplanning. The newly reinstated Nepal Peace Corps program, resurrected after a lengthy and bloody civil war, has drawn a gauntlet of intrepid volunteers, joining him in the iconic, multi-year program.
Following Benjamin to Nepal is a painful past riddled with careless words and broken hearts, which eventually catches up with him and forces him to make the toughest decision of his life. Along the way, Benjamin and his friends, American and Nepali alike, encounter circumstances and choices that illuminate the struggles, sacrifices, and triumphs that intimately shape the lives of volunteers in and residents of South Asia.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It reads very much like a memoir when in fact it is a work of Fiction inspired by the author's own experiences in Nepal.  The fact that he can transport us there through the written word, speaks volumes in regards to his writing.  You can feel the exhilaration of that first landing in a strange new country.  You can see the oddities that are the daily norm for a people so different and yet somewhat the same.  You can feel the confusion settle in your skin as things that you abhor are presented in a different light making them almost seem to be the lesser of two evils.  Grant it, they are not, but it's striking enough to give you pause.  From start to finish, it's a lesson in giving of yourself for the greater good without losing yourself in the process.  It's a reminder that even our biggest wrongs can be righted with enough effort on our part; perhaps not with the outcome we wished, but still righted.  It presents us with adventure (mountain climbing and altitude sickness!), the various faces of love, and humanity in its many forms.

All in all, I enjoyed my trip to Nepal and beyond with Benjamin and appreciate his appetite for life, love, and the pursuit of a better world.  It's not often you get to lend a hand in building a community one moment, get whisked away by a group of fellow Peace Corps members for a night of frivality, and then jet set in pursuit of a love that might have been.  It's a mixed bag affair that's all about landing on the path that leads to our ultimate self.

Seasonal Fun: Little Boo by Stephen Wunderli

Why hello there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the place that's always ready to turn the next page, and the next, and the next, and the....

Today, we're celebrating the season with a book choice that's fit for girls and boys of all ages.  It's a storybook adventure that shares more than just the spooky spirit of the month but a lesson in patience, trust and belief.  So grab your Fall sweaters and boots, we're heading to the pumpkin patch for today's book of choice is....

This is the story of a tiny seed that wants to be so much more.  He dreams of being out in the swirling winds, experiencing the world on his own, while spookily scaring all those he meets.  Unbeknownst to him, he has a bit of growing up to do first; after all, it's what he'll finally become that puts the fun chill in Halloween.  Though he's impatient, he puts his trust in the wise wind.  He grows and grows, asking again and again if he's ready, until one day, his "boo" grows to the PERFECT size and he's able to put the spook in spooky as he's long dreamed.

It's a wonderful tale of life and growing up twinged with the seasonal joys we experience from those orange wonders....pumpkins, or in this case jack-o-lanterns.  It speaks of having patience and trusting in what's to come, believing you can do anything you set your mind to if you only give it the time it needs to be reached.  I love how the wise wind was like a mother to our "little boo", never leaving him without a word of encouragement or breeze of understanding.   The adored the illustrations that accompanied each scene taking us from tiny to "finally" and everywhere in between.  Their whimsy and wonder reach out from each page with a color palette perfect for the seasons it depicts.

All in all, a fine addition to anyone's personal library but a perfect fit for the time of year.  Little ones will be encouraged by "little boo" as he makes his way from small to tall while older readers will be reminded of the simple things Autumn brings.

Walking on Daddy's Feet by Jason Sandberg

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're diving back into the realm of ebooks, a land I don't venture in as often as many (~precious paper books~) but I can be found dabbling in from time to time.  The dabble inducing read today comes to us from an author previously featured here on SFIR....one, Jason Sandberg.  Name ring a bell?  It should.  He's brought us ebooks such as The New Crown, and Candy and the Cankersaur...and has a few more on the way that will make you look twice as you uncover their quirky titles....but today's selection tells a sweet story many can relate to.  Without further ado, today's ebook of choice is....

Walking on Daddy's Feet
by
Jason Sandberg

The story is what the title says, a tale of a little girl walking along on her Daddy's feet.  Oh come on, we've all done that at SOME point in our youth!  Whether it be Daddy's, Mommy's, Grandma's, Grandpa's, or another relation, we know how it feels to experience the world on someone elses two feet.  We weren't too lazy to walk on our own.  It wasn't too dangerous to give it a try.  It was the simple time shared and the fun it added to any adventure that made us climb aboard for another round.

Here, father and daughter share time in the sun and the snow, at the beach and at home, through the city and through the neighborhood, as they create memories that'll last their whole lives through.  It shows how sharing the simplest of things can be priceless and that the best of times can be had when spent with someone we love.  It's suitable for all ages but geared towards the wee ones that'll be eager to follow in our leading ladies shadowed footsteps.  Now, this being a picture ebook, one must comment on the illustrations....

While I had fun with the Cankersaur and wondered at the Crown, my feelings were split on this aspect for Walking.  While the scenary was charming, the architecture spot on, and the clothing detailed, my eye was displeased by...the faces.  I'm not sure what it was exactly but personally, they didn't fit the characters.  The darling little girl's sweet personality gets lost a time or two behind a vacant stare or overly large smile.  Even the father shares the same fate with the one photo we have of him looking straight out at us.  Grant it, they look alike so there's no question that they are related, but this was one area I would have liked to see portrayed differently.

In the end, a sweet story with illustrations that may not hit all the marks, but still assist in making the visual experience something little ones can relate to.  As I said, it's aimed at wee readers audience wise, but I can certainly envision a parent or guardian reading this as they remember their children's first shared steps...and who could blame them?

Ebook for review courtesy of author Jason Sandberg.  (THANKS!)  For more information on this title as well as his other works, be sure to stop by his official site.  This ebook if available now, so click on over to Amazon to grab your copy now....last I checked, only $.99!

Until next time...happy reading!

HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY: Crowned! by Julia Dweck

HI there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers....the place that begins and ends its day with the turning of a page.

Today, we're exploring the latest release from author Julia Dweck and the FIRST time her NEW PUBLISHING company is being featured on my site!  Yep....that's right.  CONGRATULATIONS (belated but heart felt) on making the jump Ms. Dweck and more power to you that your pen is marching on.  So, let's get to this latest and potentially greatest release, shall we?  Today's book of choice is....

by
Julia Dweck
Pictures by
Beth Trott
Sleepy Sheep Productions

About the book...
...a tale of fantasy, adventure and bravery. Quinn is a fairy sprite who dreams of becoming queen. But how does one become a queen? All the books Quinn has ever read claim that damsels in distress are rescued by princes and then live happily ever after. Quinn’s search for a handsome prince is brought to an abrupt halt by a nasty two-headed ogre who threatens the safety of Fairy Land.  Can Quinn summon the queen inside her heart to outwit this evil foe?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, you gotta love the forward thinking message in this one.  It was definitely written for today's youth in mind.  Think about it, the fairytales most of us grew up with DO in fact have a damsel in some sort of distress that is saved by a dashing knight, prince, insert-big-strong-handsome-stereotype here.  There's nothing wrong with that but giving girls another option of saving herself, her friends, AND the day, definitely couldn't hurt...especially when it's set to rhyme and combined with charming illustrations.
That's right!  The flow of the story as well as the verses are as smooth as the velvet gowns of green Quinn dreams of for her royal garb.  The pictures are colorful and magical allowing the creativity of the illustrator to shine through, much like Quinn's resourcefulness in saving the day.  It all works together to provide a seamless experience of joy and wonder for readers of all ages.  While one age may be glued purely to the images dancing before their eyes, the next will take that wonder one step further as they follow the turning pages from story to message and beyond.  A great read with pure fun for all just waiting for you to discover....so, what are you waiting for?
About the book....
June, 1947. Charleston is poised to celebrate the biggest wedding in high-society history, the joining of two of the oldest families in the city. Except the bride is nowhere to be found…Unlike the rest of the debs she grew up with, Vada Hadley doesn’t see marrying Justin McLeod as a blessing—she sees it as a life sentence. So when she finds herself one day away from a wedding she doesn’t want, she’s left with no choice but to run away from the future her parents have so carefully planned for her.
In Round O, South Carolina, Vada finds independence in the unexpected friendships she forms at the boarding house where she stays, and a quiet yet fulfilling courtship with the local diner owner, Frank Darling. For the first time in her life, she finally feels like she’s where she’s meant to be. But when her dear friend Darby hunts her down, needing help, Vada will have to confront the life she gave up—and decide where her heart truly belongs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It's sweet and sassy.  It's misguided and confused.  It's a mish mosh of feelings, missed chances, looks of longing, and best intentions that melt into a big pot of reading goodness that's best served warm....with a side of grits and a fresh made crab cake.  (Okay, so you can KEEP the grits....I'll give the crab cake a try though. ^_^)

Vada was being forced into a marriage of convenience...to her family's name, wealth, and heritage.  Did she love him?  Hey-to-the-no.  Did her 'rents care?  Double negative, captain.  Good thing the life of the privileged allows for caretakers that actually CARE about the children, even when the parents just don't have a clue.  In this case, Vada's "salvation" as it were came in the form of Rosa Lee and Desmond ....though not biologically her parents, they might as well have been.  They knew her, cared what she wanted, and were willing to risk it all to allow her the chance to discover it on her own.  That love, that freedom, led Vada on the adventure of a lifetime to not only discover the whereabouts of her long lost friend, but the true meaning of family, the joy love can bring and truly....herself.

Watching Vada's transformation was exquisite.  She never truly lost her gentle nature or graceful mannerisms, but she DID gain a backbone and a will of iron that allowed her to speak her mind, and be certain she was heard.  The time the book is set in along with the sleepy backwater town are not elements that preach solidarity or even acquainting oneself with a woman baring these qualities but Vada made it irresistible to friend, more-than-friend, and foe.  Even those that would take advantage of her were given pause....grant it, it didn't stop them but it did make them think.  Speaking of those that make you think....

When Vada arrives in this unexpected hideaway, she makes a few friends along the way.  Claire and her boys are a joy to behold.  She's suffered much (as did the children) with the loss of her husband and hearing the "only options" she had was heart wrenching but as luck would have it, sometimes what's written in the cards is not immediately apparent.  Can we say unexpected happy ending?  I shan't say more about that.  *ahem*  Then we have Frank Darling.  Name sound familiar?  For me, I was thinking about Peter Pan, but Frank is definitely not someone that hasn't grown up.  He has a checkered past and it's something the town will not let him forget but as for the man versus the rumor?  His is a gem through and through.  His blossoming relationship with Vada is fraught with bad timing, big mouths, and secrets.  Sounds like the worst way to start a relationship, right?  Well the thing is...those things kept to themselves were never meant to cause harm but to protect the barer of the secret from additional pain.  Do they learn their lessons and come clean in the end?  Ah....you'll have to read it but I'll tell you this, towards book's end, there is a wedding.  Now if you want to know to whom, where, and why....you're just gonna have to read it.

In conclusion, a great read for Women's Fiction or Southern Fiction fans full of heart.  Just try not to fall in love with the characters of this charming tale, even those we love to loathe; to me, it can't be done.  Recommended for older teens through adults due to some sensual scenes.

About the Author

Kim Boykin was raised in her South Carolina home with two girly sisters and great parents. She had a happy, boring childhood, which sucks if you’re a writer because you have to create your own crazy. PLUS after you’re published and you’re being interviewed, it’s very appealing when the author actually lived in Crazy Town or somewhere in the general vicinity.

Almost everything she learned about writing, she learned from her grandpa, an oral storyteller, who was a master teacher of pacing and sensory detail. He held court under an old mimosa tree on the family farm, and people used to come from all around to hear him tell stories about growing up in rural Georgia and share his unique take on the world.

As a stay-at-home mom, Kim started writing, grabbing snip-its of time in the car rider line or on the bleachers at swim practice. After her kids left the nest, she started submitting her work, sold her first novel at 53, and has been writing like crazy ever since.

Thanks to the lessons she learned under that mimosa tree, her books are well reviewed and, according to RT Book Reviews, feel like they’re being told across a kitchen table. She is the author of The Wisdom of Hair from Berkley, Steal Me, Cowboy and Sweet Home Carolina from Tule, and Palmetto Moon, also from Berkley 8/5/14. While her heart is always in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, she lives in Charlotte and has a heart for hairstylist, librarians, and book junkies like herself.
