For those that already initiated into the DC Comic clan, you'll recognize names like no other...for those like me, you'll capture the key ones floating around and it'll be enough to more than satisfy your super hero desires.  From Harley Quinn to Beast Boy, the Riddler to Katana, there are familiar friendlies and future not-so-friendlies around every hallway.  We get to see the supers BEFORE they were all super fabulous and famous, which basically boils down to high school kids not simply pulling rank over fashion and status but powers and saves as well.  Goodness...as if they didn't have enough to worry about at that age?  Enough indeed...unless of course you're talking about their latest recruit, WONDER WOMAN.

That's right...expect it's more like Wonder Girl right now, hence her wanting to feel like one of the gang and using a nickname for her time at school. (Have you met Wondy?) She comes from a place where her skills weren't uncommon and saving the day was always at the top of the list of things to do, but mingling, social cues, and public schooling were definitely not covered topics, so needless to say, Wonder Woman is a bit of a fish out of water. Easily deceived by the intentions of her fellow classmates, she falls victim to many atrocities that you can't call anything but what they are...BULLYING...and super or not, it's uncool and uncalled for.  Wondy does what any good super hero would do...grins and bears it...and shares her worries with a friend or two that's got her back and the know how to figure out what's going on.  There's a shadowy figure at work and it wants nothing more than to see Wonder Woman fall flat on her face.  Between the threatening letters and the sabotaged events, things are heating up...but to what end and for that matter from what start?  There's theories as to who is behind it all, but will they prove to be correct?  Or is there someone else working behind the scenes to make certain Wondy leaves disgraced, publicly humiliated, and just plain destroyed?  *cue sinister music*

I can honestly see kiddos really getting into this series.  There's action, adventure, uncertainty, danger, intramural-type sports, and a whole lot of heart.  Wonder Woman is certainly nothing like I'd imagined at her age but then again, have we really ever explored her youth?  Most adults weren't just as they are now back then, so that twist alone made this a unique read.  I loved her innocence in the face of so much adversity.  She didn't let things get her down but rather kept looking for a way to overcome.  Though she takes things quite literally, it made her easy to like and trust...something that a few of the others supers could certainly work on themselves.  Though she had powers, she was perhaps the most open hearted of them all, never acting like anything more than one of the bunch.  I was rooting for her the whole time and when things got dicey towards the end...well, let's just say I was holding my breath for a bit. Though Wondy was our main focus, the others receive their own share of face time too!  Favorites would have to be Bumblebee and Poison Ivy.  I know, I know...the one is slated to be a villain but hey, everyone got their start somewhere, and no one said you had to turn out the way you began.  Definitely adds to the anticipation for future installments.

In the end, we (as well as they) learn that SUPER HERO HIGH isn't so much about what super powers or skills you posses, but about learning to accept, grow into, and enjoy the most super thing of all....YOU.  Every person is different, each of us is unique, but it's what we do with what we have that makes us who we are.  Wonder Woman truly is a wonder, and her selfless nature will endear her to readers young and young at heart (especially in the last scenes...*sniff*...so noble!).  It's a great start to what promises to be a SUPER series aimed at middle grade readers and beyond.
