RRR presents... THE MAKINGS OF A LADY by Catherine Tinley - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're joining Rachel's Random Resources for a stop along their current tour starring the latest addition to The Chadcombe Marriages trilogy.  It is in fact the third and final book in the trio, but don't distress...it reads wonderfully as a standalone and I speak from experience!  So, if you're ready, we're going to take a step inside this Mills & Boon release that just celebrated its BOOK BIRTHDAY yesterday (woo hoo!) as we explore...

About the book...
Be calm, she thought.
Be gracious. Be twenty-two.

Lady Olivia Fanton is eager to prove she’s no longer a child. However, just as she thinks she’s found a suitable match in the suave Mr Manning, charismatic Captain Jem Ford walks back into her life, bringing with him all the embarrassment of her infatuation four years before! She’s determined to appear mature, distant, friendly. But does she dare hope he’ll notice her as the lady she’s become?

Okay, so I'm newish to the Regency Romance genre, and I'm beginning to see that I have some particular tastes.  No, not in the dashing heroes, resourceful heroines, or villainous villains sorta way, but in the story itself.  It can't JUST be about the duke and his conquest, or the new debutant and her steps into society.  I need JUICE...I need STORY...I need SOMETHING to happen apart from the simpering, deep consideration of feelings, and sorting out of what if proper or not.  THANK GOODNESS for the underhanded deeds that take place here...

At the start, we meet Lady Olivia Fanton...all of eighteen years old, and simply falling all over herself with adoration for Jem Ford, a soldier convalescing in her family's care.  The moment comes when she thinks his feelings may in fact be returned...but are dashed by the call of duty, and sense of honor Mr. Ford adheres to.  Years pass, those feelings are now dormant, so meeting him once again should be simple, right?  Even though he is now a Captain.  Even though she has Mr. Manning to entertain her thoughts.  Even though there was never truly any declarations between them or claims made.  Right?  Yeah...keep telling yourself that, and you'll be as dizzy as our Lady Olivia with confusion, dreams, and dare I say...desire?  Prim and proper, they may be, but human emotions run deep, and once love is found, it is hard to but asunder.

Really and truly, I liked Lady Olivia, and most of her friends/brethren.  They were sweet, demur, and proper for their times, but only just.  Her adventures to the streambed, as a case in point, simply reflect the fun and adventurous side of her that lurks beneath the ladylike surface, but she is still an attribute to her gender.  The strength she showed in the face of danger was very becoming, as was her willingness to accept some things as they were, while trying to move things to her advantage in others.  Also agreeable to my reading tastes was the likes of Captain Jem Ford.  Seriously, he is a gem...gentlemanly yet take charge when necessary, kindhearted yet strong of character, considerate yet not overly so.  Despite his lack of action four years ago, I was definitely rooting for him upon his return, and when he went off to actually DO something when what befalls Lady Olivia befell her...be still my heart!  Mr. Manning, on the other hand, I never liked.  Sorry, but he seemed too good to be true, and I kept getting these bad vibes from him and his overtly charismatic self.  Just...no.  Not the man for our girl, and I could never really bring myself to trust him.

All in all, a wonderful read for Regency Romance fans of all ages, unless a few untoward kisses or bare ankles will make you blush.  *giggle*  Though I've not read the other two books in the trilogy, never say never...and it doesn't mean you can't start there either!  Whatever your current reading list will allow, get this one or all three on it and you won't be sorry.
