Should old acquaintance be forgot?: 9/11: A SURVIVOR'S STORY by Artie Van Why

Good morning, and welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

The songs have been sung, the toasts have been toasted, and the resolutions have been made, as we brave the first day of the new year.  Are you ready?  Frankly, I'm more than ready for a new year seeing as we're still living in a hotel room, the house is nowhere near being completed, I'm still dealing with the insurance company, contractors, and the like....not to mention the whole town still resembles the fallout from a bombing ("thank you", Hurricane Michael).  Hopefully 2019 brings more joys than pain, more happiness than tears, more laughter than sadness, and just a whole lot more GOOD for people everywhere.  I mean, let's face it...Mother Nature has pretty much had her revenge on the whole world last year between the hurricanes, wildfires, tsunamis, snowstorms, and whatnot.

So, today is a day that we take a look at the future while still remembering the past at our backs, and I can't help but think....should old acquaintance be forgot?  Perhaps not forgotten, but learned from and laid to rest as respectfully as possible.  A book I read several years back as been rereleased with a new title, cover, and expanded content covering the author's years prior to a nationally covered tragic event, as well as his years afterward living with PTSD.  It's not a happy read, but it is real, and taken from the perspective of someone that not only lived through, but was right there with it, it has a gentler delivery and unique focus in comparison to others.  Ladies and gents, I invite you to take a closer look at today's title in the spotlight...

I was sitting on one of the stone-slab benches in the plaza area of the World Trade Center between the Twin Towers. My paper cup of coffee sat beside me, and I held my newspaper in my hands. There was something about that day specifically. And that something seemed to permeate the air around me and the motions of the people I watched heading to their jobs or wherever else they might have been going.

As 8:30 approached, I folded up the newspaper, crumbled up the paper coffee cup, throwing it away, and headed toward one of the revolving side doors on Dey Street. I took one of the elevators up to the twenty-third floor and headed to the word-processing center, where my desk was.

At 8:30, I picked up my first work assignment and turned on my computer and started typing. In sixteen minutes, my life, our country, and the world would never be the same again.

After an upheaval, you must face what seems impossible: continuing your life. Artie Van Why found himself in that situation after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and he recalls his experiences as a survivor and witness of that day in this memoir.

Van Why also looks back at what brought him to New York, including his struggle with his sexuality and spirituality. He shares these personal details because as you read about him standing in front of the burning towers, it’s important to understand the person he was on that day, what he’d been through, what he’d endured, and what he’d overcome.

Finally, in what were originally Huffington Post blogs, Van Why shares what his life has been like since 9/11, including how he’s coped with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and all the other manifestations of grief, mourning, and sadness that can be applied to any life-altering experience.

No matter what type of hardship you find yourself confronting, you’ll find valuable wisdom in how to overcome it with this survivor’s tale.
