Hi readers!
Welcome back to another exciting week here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers. Exciting how? Ah, well now….see THAT’S the real kicker. You might have noticed the slight influx of blog tours recently here on the site, well, that trend for the month of October (at least) is going to continue. Yep. Let’s just say that one too many opportunities came my way that I just couldn’t say no to and so my schedule, she is how you say….BOOKED SOLID this month. No worries. Reading is going along (mostly) as planned and as I wouldn’t want to deprive you of any of these great book adventures, the posts will continue as scheduled. So stayed tuned for reviews, guest posts, and contests galore as the weather cools down and the reading heats up! That being said, who’s ready for today’s feature, huh? Anyone? *looks for hands* Ah, good….good….because here we go….
Today’s featured title comes to us by way of Partners in Crime, a new blog tour group started by a few folks you’ve more than likely head of if you’ve spent any time in the blogosphere in recent years (more on that later in the post). This is one of their kick off events (which I am very honored to be included in….*big smile*) so be sure to show them some love and check out their site….after you read the rest of this post of course. ^_^
The book on the menu today is actually not a book in and of itself, but rather TWO books from one impressive author, by the name of Laurel Dewey, featuring a character gritty enough to satisfy the crime fiction junkies yet though provoking enough for the true mystery buff. Where do I fall in this group? Somewhere in between…but hey, they sounded like interesting reads, and I wasn’t disappointed. Since we’re featuring two titles, they deserve their own introductions, summaries…and of course, my thoughts on them. Book number one, coming at you!
Promissory Payback
(A Jane Perry Novelette)
… Jane is called in to investigate the gruesome murder of a woman who profited greatly from the misfortunes of others. The case leaves Jane with little question about motive...and with a seemingly endless number of suspects.
This is one story that illustrates one of many ways I would not want to die, thank you very much. I mean, whew! It’s certainly memorable and not one for the kiddos. It’s also a story that while chock full of suspects, the final reveal will totally make you think. NO, really! Imagine you could stop a whole lot of people from being hurt or bad events from happening if just one person were removed from the picture. Could YOU justify said person or persons lives essentially being ended? It’s a fine line between right and wrong and a hard line to walk at that, but Jane Perry does it with ease. End result…a creative storyline with an all too realistic feel.
Unrevealed
(Four Jane Perry Stories)
…four indelible portraits of Jane Perry:
ANONYMOUS: One of Jane's first AA meetings leads her to an encounter with a woman in need of her detection skills...and a secret she never expected to uncover.
YOU CAN'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER: Forced by her boss to speak at a high school career day, Jane meets a troubled boy and finds that his story is only the beginning of a much more revealing tale.
YOU'RE ONLY AS SICK AS YOUR SECRETS: An early-morning homicide call introduces Jane to a mystery as layered as it is unsuspected.
THINGS AREN'T ALWAYS WHAT THEY SEEM: Jane finds herself sharing a 2:00 am conversation at a downtown bar with an old acquaintance. Will the bloody night that proceeded this moment complicate Jane's intentions?
This particular collection of stories reads almost like a journal or memoir as Jane Perry recounts some of her most interesting cases to date. The first leads you to a surprisingly personal reveal that connects with recent events that rocked out nation. The second, title wise is fabulous but story wise was astonishing. It really shines a light on my theory that you can’t literally be happy every second of every day without ever being upset …at least not without some MAJOR skeletons in the closet. O-O Story three, let’s just say that some will do ANYTHING to keep their secrets at bay and wow, the star of this story is REALLY pushing that to the limit. Jane however handles it more remarkably even when you aren’t quite sure where things are going. Last but not least, story four definitely puts a strong emphasis on the saying that gave it its name. My mind kept reeling on this one as I pieced together what was happening…and was still surprised in the end. (Kudos to the author on that one!)
Author Laurel Dewey |
In summary, Jane Perry….hardcore detective with instincts of steel. I’d certainly trust her to investigate a case for myself, but umm, if I was ever on the “other side”, here’s hoping she’s on vacation and out of cell range. Though short stories generally aren’t my forte since they give a taste but leave you hungry in the end….this time, the length of each tale worked rather well leaving this reader satisfied, yet still with room for dessert (i.e. additional stories in the series). Despite not having read the author’s work previously I was able to acquaint myself with the title character adequately enough to follow along as an active participant in each case as opposed to merely a bystander…a feat when dealing with any murder/mystery. Recommended reading for adult readers due to content….murder, mayhem, and language….you know, more adult-ish stuff.
