Welcome back to the site that aims to please the reader in you from the young to the young at heart…Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we’re hosting a spot on the tour for a Children’s Picture Book (one of the many types of reads that we LOVE!) that’s making its way through the blogosphere. Filled with whit and whimsy, it’s sure to be a people pleaser…though dear old Dad may have something to say a little different about it…at first that is. Care to make its acquaintance? Let’s! Today’s book of choice is….

We all know that Mom’s and Dad’s do things differently yet more often than not still get the job done. When it comes to the art of raising children, the same rules apply just in a much WIDER scope. This is the story of one Dad trying to get it right, often coming up a bit short, but still coming through in the end…like most great Dad’s do.
Now I was raised in a single parent home for most of my life, so Mom was both parents to me. (Love you Mom!) While I’m an advocate for the ideal two parent family, if it’s not working…it’s not working. You have to do what’s best for you and your family, forget about the status quo; make your own. The Dad in this story is not on his own, but he also doesn’t know all the “rules” from the get go…also like most Dad’s. *smirk* As the story progresses, he learns the in’s and out’s providing for many great moments of laughter, frustration, cheers of elation and smoke induced tears….hey, not every Dad gets to wear that “King of the Barbeque” apron come grilling season, or at least not willingly. In the end, he finds his way, or rather the children realize that as much “bad” as there is to Dad, there is just as much if not more, GOOD. A sweet ending to a fun tale indeed…but that’s not the end to this tale. No siree.

A picture book review is only truly complete when the pictures themselves are mentioned, pondered and noted. Don’t you agree? So, we’re about to do just that. My feelings about the images teetered between love and sorta love. I shall esplain as they were really all tied into one. There’s a certain fun and whimsical quality about them that lend them their life, but there is also a hint in some of the brighter images of the original draft or sketches…as in you can see that line work where the artist’s pencil wasn’t quite certain of its intended conclusion and so multiple lighter lines were left giving the picture a fuzzy look. In the end it works, but my favorite scenes are still those with a darker lighting scheme…especially where the Dad is fighting off a bear. Yep. A bear. *-* Go Dad!
In conclusion, a great read for all ages that reminds us that Dad is just like everyone else…only perhaps a bit more special at times and in need of room to grow. (^_^) Special thanks to Michele at Provato Marketing for the chance to host a spot on this tour as well as the review copy. (THANKS!) For more information on this tour as well as those forthcoming, be sure to stop by their official site. This title is available now from Cannonball Books LLC, so be on the lookout for it on a bookstore shelf near you.
Until next time…happy reading!

ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard of this one before, but it sounds like a fun read. I know my mom and dad definitely did things differently. ;) Thanks for sharing.
