Everything can change in... Eight Minutes by Lori Reisenbichler

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

It's that time again.  Time to look between the pages of another title you may or may not have had on your radar.  Are you ready?  Today's featured selection comes to us courtesy of Mindbuck Media Book Publicity and stars a Fiction title with a touch of the "great beyond".  Okay, perhaps more than a touch if you're willing to admit it but before we dig too deep, allow me to introduce you properly.  Ladies and gents, today's book of choice is...

About the book...
On the night that Shelly Buckner finally became a mother, she very nearly became a widow. Her husband, Eric, seriously injured in a car accident on the way to the hospital, was dead for a full eight minutes before being revived—all while Shelly was in labor. Those eight minutes changed everything Shelly thought was possible.

Three years later, their son, Toby, brings home an imaginary friend. But he’s no ordinary playmate—John Robberson is a fighter pilot and Vietnam vet. As Toby provides unlikely details about John’s life—and Toby’s tantrums increase—Shelly becomes convinced that John was real and now wants something from Toby. But her husband has his doubts, and as Shelly becomes involved, even obsessed, with finding out the truth, their marriage begins to disintegrate. Torn between protecting her child and keeping the peace with her husband, Shelly desperately searches for a way to finally put John Robberson out of their lives.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was a hard one to make head's or tales out of, truth be told.
I wanted to be in love with it but I can't say I honestly was.  If we flip to the other side of the same token though, I wasn't in dislike with it either.  I suppose by book's end, the story and I had struck an agreement:  I would follow it wherever it lead so long as it did in fact end and release me from whatever page turning spell I was under.  Deal struck, I continued my read and was rewarded with an ending to be sure, but I can't say that I was happy.
Now, before you start throwing things at me through the screen (because frankly, that's dangerous...for YOU that is; I'm virtually impossible to reach), I don't think every book has to have a happy ending.  In fact, many stories that aren't actually "happy" are still rather satisfying.  This one...well, once again my answer is middle of the line.  I do believe though it is my lack of connection to the characters that is getting the best of me, or perhaps better stated, my change in opinion of them at certain points.  Allow me to explain.
Initially, I like Shelly.  She took on childbirth by herself (though her husband's absence was certainly excusable), brought her concerns about the changes she noticed in Eric (the husband) to the proper people (not that they were helpful in the least), and even when things looked bleakest, she continued to follow the path she truly believed when it came to Toby and John Robberson.  She was a woman unafraid of standing on her own two feet and figured the support she counted on would be there when needed.  She was wrong.  Could she have known this in the slightest?  No, at least from my point of view.
SO, why did my opinion change from higher regard to lesser regard?  For me, it was when Eric began the ultimatums, such as threatening to protect their son from HER no matter what and if she didn't stop obsessing about solving the John Robberson riddle, their marriage would be over.  He had already been a pretty large three-letter-word-beginning-with-A-and-ending-in-a-double-S up to this point, but that was the icing on the already overdone and gaudy cake.  Grant it, some of this cl-ass-icness is explained by book's end, but I guess I felt that she was compromising herself SO MUCH when he didn't feel worth it anymore.  Anywho...
Overall, the story was curious.  I liked how the idea of an imaginary friend was explored not only on a basic level but also cross culturally.  It was interesting to note how different people view a similar phenomena.  The paranormal aspect of it all was certainly enough to put you off-kilter, especially when Kay arrives in the flesh and John does too...in a manner of speaking.  (Talk about a creepy deja vu moment.  ~shakes head~) Though it could have added too much to an already full storyline, it didn't; things balanced out rather well in fact, despite my personal likes or dislikes.  I do have to say that the ending leaves us a bit on a precipice though; so many ways it could potentially turn and yet I know that one of them would certainly end in my own person being confined for fifty to life.  I'll let you sort it out from there.
Recommended read for Fiction fans that appreciate thinking outside the box and can be left to ponder multiple options for the ending in their own time contentedly.
BLOG TOUR: Author Chris Rylander and the Codename Conspiracy series - Interview + GIVEAWAY!
Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Well, you've done it.
You've made it to FRIDAY!
Sound the alarm, ring the bell, and get ready for some GREAT reading ahead.  That's right!  Just because the weekend is here doesn't mean we're slacking off on the reviews.  In fact, we're bringing you something EXTRA special today via blog tour from the great team over at Walden Pond Press.  (~waves~) The tour stars the latest release in the Codename Conspiracy series from author Chris Rylander.  Name ringing any bells for you?  Well it certainly should!
A few weeks back, you might remember that I featured a double review of both books in this series, my thoughts on which you can read RIGHT HERE.  Some odd days later, I received an invite to participate in this very blog tour celebrating both the initial release of Countdown Zero and the paperback release of Codename Zero...seeing how I enjoyed them so much, I couldn't possibly say no?  Here's a peek at the title celebrating its book birthday this month....
About the book...
There are people in this world who live secret lives. There are people who fight the evil that lurks in the shadows so that the rest of us can live free from tyranny and fear. There are people—perhaps the person who is sitting across from you on the bus or waiting tables at your favorite restaurant—who put it all on the line for us, every day, whose names we’ll never know.
None of these people is Carson Fender.
At least, not since he was let go by the secret agency that enlisted his services to help foil a nefarious plot perpetrated by one of their former agents. Carson is back to hanging out with his friends, pulling pranks, and not having to lie to everyone about how he’s spending his days. And that’s for the best. Isn’t it?
Of course, this was all before a note showed up in his school lunch, informing him that Agent Nineteen has three days left to live, and that there might still be someone inside the Agency working against them. Carson has always been able to rely on his friends—but what happens when there’s no one left to trust?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sounds good, right?  But wait!  Tours usually entail a review and I had already done one (nay two!)...what to do, what to do. Ah, why yes!  I know!  So I emailed them back with my post type preference and the rest is history.  Can you guess what I chose?  Oh, I see.  You read the post title today, didn't you?  Uh-huh. Why you sneaky little reader you.  Okay, well yes, you are correct, an AUTHOR INTERVIEW was just the ticket (with a little extra fun after all is said and done....KEEP READING!).

So.
Ladies and gents.
Readers of all ages!
Join me now as we welcome to the virtual stage, author Chris Rylander!
*wild applause*

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:
Chris Rylander

1.  So, we've come out of "The Fourth Stall" and into the line of fire. Talk about a transition! No, really...talk about it, as in why the leap from middle school "godfather" to super spy?

It just seemed like a natural next step.  To take another well known genre and redo it for the middle grade audience.  So I wanted the tone to be similar as well, (somewhat) gritty, humorous, and fun.  Plus, I really became a super secret spy for an organization I can't divulge when I was in middle school, so there was a lot of source material. Basically this book is an unofficial tell-all.

2.  Though targeted for a Kids Fiction audience, older readers certainly get their chills and thrills too.  I mean, I know I shuddered when the clown in book one was less then three ring circus funny. Were the age barrier breakers intentional or a mere lucky stroke of the pen?

Neither.  I think it's a direct byproduct of me being the most selfish writer alive.  Meaning, I always make sure that I am entertained by my own writing first and foremost.  And, as the world's oldest middle school kid, it sort of makes sense that my writing appeals to both middle school kids and adults.

3.  Alright, so the Codename series has recently expanded.  Congratulations!  Book 2, "Countdown Zero", has Carson in some pretty tight spots and dealing with some big issues. If you could guarantee readers would walk away with one message and one message alone, what would that be?

When I first started writing, my number one goal was to write books that sent zero messages to kids (aside from the subliminal ones I implant to try and get them addicted to frosting.)  I know as a kid writer, nothing drove me more crazy than reading books that were clearly trying to pound some sort of life-changing-message into my head with a tire iron.  And so I just wanted to write books that kids would find fun to read. I wanted to make reading fun above all else. Of course there's a little bit more to my books than what I first envisioned, however, publicly I'm sticking to my original story.  So that's my message: Have Fun!  Enjoy the book! (And eat frosting with a spoon straight from the tub when reading.)

4. Last but not least, moment of truth. If YOU could be either of your lead characters, who would it be and why?

Ah!  What a hard question… I think I'd go with Mac from the Fourth Stall.  Unlike Carson Fender, aka Agent Zero, I do not like action and excitement in my life.  I much more prefer the things Mac does: good friends, video games, making money, and Cubs games.  And he's better at all of them than me.

Quid pro quo...
Favorite color?
Frosting
Favorite time of year?  Whenever it is that farmer's harvest frosting
Favorite reading spot?  Lying in bed at night (with a bucket of frosting tucked under an arm)
What was the last book you read? Dory Fantasmagory - it was awesome!!!  Made me laugh so hard that frosting came out of my nose.
Advice to future writers?  Make sure you're always having fun while writing.  True inspiration comes from those pure moments when you're having fun.  Well, and also from, yeah, you guessed it, frosting.

Thanks so much for having me!  It was an awesome interview with questions that were surely far superior to my answers.

~~SUMMARY~~
Over-the-Edge-3D-Full-Cover-Paperback-2
In six weeks, Zoe Harper will marry Dan Costi in an over-the-top Sydney society wedding, complete with fire-eaters and belly dancers. But when she receives an unexpected gift from her future mother-in-law, Zoe realises she’s making a huge mistake. In a blazing sidewalk argument, she breaks up with her fiancé—and his mother, who has joined the fight via conference call.
Following the advice of friends and co-workers, along with some inspiration from late-night-television self-help guru Dr. Pam, Zoe sets out to find the life she thinks she should be living. Always a planner, she makes a list of goals: travel, career, tattoos, and no romantic entanglements. It’s all carefully laid out, until she meets Angus Creed.
Angus is supposed to lead the opening waltz at a charity ball in New York City. Only problem is the handsome billionaire construction magnate with the tabloid past can’t dance. Not one step.
Tainted by gossip and with a well-publicised failed engagement behind him, Angus has become a master at keeping an emotional distance. Until he meets Zoe.
What starts as dancing lessons slowly becomes something more. Angus begins to let down his guard and open his heart, even when his past makes an unexpected and unwelcome return. As Zoe discovers the real man behind the headlines, she questions where her new choices are taking her. Her goals look good on paper, but are they what she really wants? And by the time she realizes where her heart lies, will it be too late?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Whoa.  Talk about some drama!
Seriously, she had to break up with him AND his mom?
*shakes head*
Sounds like the new direction she is choosing in life is a good thing...though those romantic entanglements may prove to be far more interesting than anticipated.
Alrighty then.
We've read through the synopsis, let's dig a little deeper.
It's EXCERPT TIME!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~~EXCERPT~~
Over-the-Edge-3D-Bookstack-1Guitar music starts filtering through just as I’m drifting back to sleep.  It’s a lovely sound, soft and gentle.  It rises and falls so evenly, almost in time with my breathing, and I could listen to it forever.  Except, I’m supposed to be alone in this cabin, so that means there shouldn’t be guitar music.
Shit.
My eyes snap open.
Did I leave a radio on?  Is there even a radio here?  What if it’s an axe murderer?  Are they usually musical?
The music keeps playing as I climb slowly out of bed and, thankfully, the room doesn’t spin quite so much this time.  The door is open a crack, and when I peek into the living room, my hangover evaporates and my heart starts crashing against my ribs.
There is a man sitting on the sofa.
Who the f*** is he?  And what did I do last night?  My stomach drops to my toes.
Whoever he is, he’s made himself at home.  His bare feet are resting on the edge of the coffee table.  There’s a blanket thrown over the arm of the sofa.  Across his lap he holds a guitar.  He’s frowning, lips pursed slightly, as he studies the movement of his long fingers over the strings.  His body moves subtly in time with his music.  The muscles in his forearm roll and flex as he plays.
Despite the shock of finding him here, I’m struck by the beauty of his pose.  The way he holds the guitar is almost tender.  His face is so intent, he’s so absorbed in what he’s doing.  And what he’s doing is beautiful.  The music is so rich and sweet.
His hair is dark and tousled, and it hangs over his forehead and into his eyes.  I would guess he’s about my age, perhaps a little older.
He doesn’t look like an axe murderer.  Maybe this is some ridiculous mix up with reservations.  Should I confront him?  Or climb out the bedroom window and run for help?  As I’m considering my options, he looks up.
“Hello,” he says.  “You’re awake.”  He offers me a smile that’s warm and wary, but it’s his eyes that really have my attention.  He has beautiful eyes.  Long-lashed and dark brown.  He blinks slowly, almost lazily.  My unease begins to fade.
I find myself being drawn into the room – one tentative step, then another.  Those eyes stay on me, gauging my reaction.
“I’m not sure how much you recall,” he says.  His voice is warm and mellow.  “Should I introduce myself again?”
“That would be a good idea, yes.”  Despite a wildly beating heart, my voice is surprisingly calm.  Calmer than the voice in my head, the one yelling at me to move away from the stranger who has appeared uninvited in my cabin.  Away.  Not closer.
Guitar Man unfolds himself from the sofa.  He’s tall.  Much taller than he appeared when he was sitting.  He smiles and offers me his hand.
“Hello,” he says again.  “I’m Angus Creed.”
It could be the shock of what Guitar Man has said, or it could be the hangover, but suddenly my head is spinning again and the floor is coming up to meet me.
“Hey...”
I’m suddenly weightless as he scoops me into his arms and eases me onto the sofa.  He crouches on the floor in front of me as I sag into the corner cushions and I stare into those dark, guarded eyes with the long lashes.  This is Angus Creed?
What the f*** is he doing here?  I’m guessing the holiday brochure on Susan’s desk wasn’t for her, after all.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”  I start to nod but stop quickly, wincing.
“Headache?”
“Um...a bit.”  It’s an effort to think straight and I close my eyes, but when I feel his hand on my forehead they snap open again.
This is surreal.  I should be asking him to leave, not gazing into his eyes as he strokes his fingers over my forehead.
There’s a roughness to his skin, no doubt from those years spent as a builder, not a businessman.  But even so, his touch is gentle and soothing, like his music.  A delicious sense of warmth flows through me.
The pounding in my head begins to ease.  I sink deeper into the sofa and might never get up again.  But my mouth is dry and I run my tongue over my lips.
Over-the-Edge-3D-Full-Cover-Paperback-1“I’ll get you some water,” he says.  Suddenly his hand is gone, but the warmth stays.  There are sounds from the kitchen: the creak of a cupboard door and the splash of water into a glass.
I wrestle myself into a sitting position and catch my reflection in the glass doors.  My hair is flat.  That means I must have worn my beanie at some stage.  But when?   Not in front of him, I hope.
I turn my head and see he’s walking across the room to me, his bare feet moving silently over the timber floor.  He holds out the glass and I nod at the blanket tossed over the armrest.  “You were here all night?”
“You asked me to stay.”
Shit.  Mr One Night Stand.  What have I done?  The horror must show on my face.
“No,” he shakes his head, “not like that.”
And of course his response means he knows exactly where my mind has gone.  Quick.  Backtrack.
“Oh.  Good.  I mean...not that I thought...you and me, that we...”
            Oh, what am I saying?  And why is he looking like that, listening so intently?  Just shut up, Zoe.  Shut up and drink the water.
            But it’s too late.  The image is in my head now.  It’s probably in his head too.  At least I look fabulous and acrobatic in my version of events.  I wonder if I’m hungover with flat hair in his.
Guitar Man...Angus...Mr Creed...stays still by the fireplace.  He watches me and I watch him.  There’s the faint shadow of a bruise on the cheekbone under his left eye.
When I’ve had enough to drink, I set the glass on the coffee table.  “Thank you,” I murmur.
“How are you feeling now?”
“Better after the water.  I needed that.”  It’s true, my head is a bit clearer but the events of last night still elude me.  I need him to explain exactly what happened.  I also need to find out what I’ve told him.  Did I tell him my name?  Does he know I work for his company?  That I’m the Zoe Harper who sent his reports off yesterday morning?  I don’t think so, because I’m quite certain he wouldn’t be here, like this.
My heart pounds.  I’m not sure how to play this, but I find myself wishing he’d stroke my forehead again.

Ha!  A musical axe murderer...love it!
Seriously though, what DID these get up to since it sounds like it wasn't the obvious assumption.  Hmmm...

BLOG TOUR: A Killer Retreat by Tracy Weber + GIVEAWAY!

Hi there ladies and gents!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

So, today we are playing host to another blog tour courtesy of Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tours that stars the second book in a growing Mystery series you need to have on your radar.  It's a little bit Cozy with a dash of Chick Lit and a big heaping spoon of Humor, shaken not stirred into a cohesive mix that's suitable for the masses.  Oh, did I mention there's an AWESOME dog named Bella as well?  Yep, sure is.  *ahem*  Anyway, grab your suits (bathing, that is) and get ready for a retreat that'll last longer than the infamous "3 hour tour".  Today's book of choice is...

A Downward Dog Mystery, Book 2
by
Tracy Weber

Midnight Ink Books

About the book...
When Kate Davidson gets an offer to teach yoga classes at the Elysian Springs resort, she jumps at the opportunity—even if it means enduring the wedding ceremony of the center’s two caretakers. But avoiding the M-word turns out to be the least of Kate’s problems when a wedding guest is found floating face-down in the resort’s hot tub, shortly after a loud, public fight with Kate.
The police pick Kate as their number-one suspect, so she teams up with her boyfriend Michael, best friend Rene, and German shepherd sidekick Bella to find the real killer. They must solve the crime before the police arrest Kate, or her next gig may last a lifetime—behind bars.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Okay, so here's the deal.
I know Michael and Kate are a newish couple (since I read the first book in the series), but the time they have spent together and the troubles they have already faced down, led me to believe that they should be much closer than they currently are.  Seriously, the biggest flaw I saw or rather read here was his character's LACK of character.  Just ugh!  For crying out loud, take HER side for once fella...she may have a hot temper but it's not Italian strength (and I should know!).  There, now that I have THAT out of my system...
The story itself is definitely enjoyable and earmarks this as one of my top Mystery series.  Usually for me, the who-dun-it is TOO obvious and I've everything (mostly) figured out before I get halfway through.  Now, I had my suspicions about a few things, some of which proved to be true, but other things revealed over time were a complete surprise.  Brava Ms. Weber!  I love that the retreat was made to sound inviting but not necessarily the showy cabins and such that appeared in the brochures.  I enjoyed getting to know Kate and her entourage a bit more, as well as finally discovering why Bella seems to dislike Sam so much (you'll laugh, promise).  The characters stayed true to themselves (some for better, some for worse...Michael *glares*) which of course led to some pretty hair-raising adventures and even a few life or death ones...that actually end in death.  *gulp*
In conclusion, I came for the dog and her girl, but stayed for the story.  The little twists along the way keep things interesting and by book's end you'll also have a better working knowledge of a few yoga positions you might want to try out.  (Still considering them in my mind...we shall see.)  The only thing I was left wondering about was Josh's little outburst somewhere in the latter third of the book but perhaps I missed something that would clarify it.  *shrugs*  Overall, it's a great addition to a series that started out promising and continues to deliver.  Can't wait to see what Kate and Bella get into next.
COVER REVEAL: Acting Out by Katrina Abbott + GIVEAWAY!
Hi guys!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're joining in the fun that surrounds author Katrina Abbott's YA series, The Rosewoods.  For those in the know, it's a FABULOUS ebook series that stars Brooklyn Prescott and "friends" at The Rosewood Academy for Academic Excellence.  It highlights their ups and downs, good times and bad, friendships made and those that should never have been, all in easy to digest in an afternoon editions that'll keep you turning the pages...virtually that is.  If you haven't made their acquaintance yet (or simply need a reminder), here's a peek back at Book 1 to make sure we're on the same page....
The Rosewoods, Book 1
by
Katrina Abbott
About the book...
Brooklyn Prescott (if that’s even her real name) is the new girl at The Rosewood Academy for Academic Excellence, now that she’s moved back to the States after two years living in London.
Rosewood, a boarding school for children of the rich and famous and known for its celebutantes, is missing just one element important to any junior’s education: boys. But luckily for Brooklyn and the rest of the Rosewood girls, there’s a boys’ boarding school, The Westwood Academy, just a few miles away.
On her very first day Brooklyn meets Will, a gorgeous and flirty boy on campus to help with move in. But is he who she thinks he is? And what about Brady, the cute stable boy? Or Jared, the former child actor with his grown-up good looks, who can always make her laugh? As Brooklyn settles in at Rosewood, she’s faced with new friends, new challenges and new opportunities to make herself into the girl she always wanted to be. Whoever that might be.
See?
Good times to be had!
There's friendships to be made, hearts to be broken, love triangles (or is that a square?) to be sorted out.  All the elements that we love in Young Adult reading with enough spark to keep it interesting but not so much that one would worry about the younger set getting their hands on these, if you know what I mean.
If you've read it, I'm curious....who were YOU rooting for?
Are you a Brady fan?  Perhaps Jared?  Don't tell me; you went for Will, didn't you?
SPILL!
About the book...
Seychelles Spencer—Chelly to her friends—is the resident bombshell at The Rosewood
Academy for Academic Excellence; Westwood boys want her and Rosewood girls want to be
her. But being the popular girl isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be, especially when that girl is
all an act. Oh, she’s not exactly lying about who she is, it’s just that the confident, outgoing
exterior is quite different from the girl inside.
 Not that it’s ever been a problem for Chelly. Until now. Because now that she sees her
friends settling down with boyfriends, she’s decided she no longer wants to be the carefree girl
who gets all the boys’ attention. Now she wants to draw the attention of one guy and get herself a steady boyfriend.
But before she can make that happen, a game of truth or dare that was supposed to be stacked
in her favor goes terribly wrong and Chelly finds herself at the center of a dare that will make
sure she never gets a guy. Still, she’s determined and will do whatever it takes to get herself a
guy of her own.
But who? And at what cost? And most importantly, is she ready to drop the act?
Acting Out is the seventh installment of The Rosewoods, a Young Adult series for readers
who love fun, flirty love stories.
Ooh!
Now see?  THAT'S what I'm talking about.
This is what makes it a great series for Young Adult readers (girls more so than guys, sorry fellas).  Though it's seamless, each installment tackles an issue in some way that hits the nail on the head for girls of the same age group while the story is still enjoyable for those outside the target range.  It's fun, flirty and frankly fantastic...and I'm going to stop with the "F" words there before they get out of hand.
