Weird by Theresa M. Jones

Hi guys and gals!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're taking a look between the epages of a newish Middle Grade title that deals with a topic not often covered in this particular age range...dream walking.  Now, that's not a term coined in the book, but to me, that's what Aislin's skill is best "titled" as and boy does it put her in some interesting situations; some a lot more deadly than others.  If you believe yourself to be ready to explore a read that certainly stands out from the crowd, I invite you to take a gander at today's ebook of choice...

About the book...
Every time twelve year old Aislin sleeps, she experiences another person’s DREAMS, their hopes or despairs, loves or hates, most fervent dreams, or darkest nightmares. She is weird, a word she hates more than anything else. Though, when her little brother, Luke, the only person in the world who treats her normal, gets into a car accident, her only hope of saving him is her ability to communicate with him while he dreams.

It isn’t until she dreams with Jessica, another coma patient and her best friend’s little sister, that she discovers her chance to save him. After Aislin guides Jessica back to the waking world, she opens her eyes to find her plan gone horribly awry, and Jessica dead.

Devastated, Aislin must find a way to stop dreaming altogether or somehow perfect it, before she kills her brother, too.

I definitely understand her feelings regarding the word WEIRD.  Though short and simple, it carries such a negative connotation with it that I myself try to use it sparingly; more for situations as opposed to people.  To me, Aislin is anything but weird.  Different, unique, special, gifted...all words I would use in its place, but also caring, insightful, loving, and intelligent.

When we first meet (and grant it for the better part of the book), she is so down on herself for the talent she possesses.  I mean, for outsiders it would seem like a dream (total pun intended) to walk amongst the dream landscapes of those around us.  We can feel out their hidden thoughts, uncover what they REALLY felt about a situation, and simply gain better insight into what makes them tick.  HOWEVER, every gift has a price that takes its toll on the gifted and in this case, young Aislin feels the burden of those secrets tenfold.  The stares are enough to drive her into her shell for her talent is not one of those secrets floating about the town, it's front and center, but recent events push her over the edge to a scary place with no sign of comfort or release.

I thought she was very courageous in her quest to save the young girl and my heart broke when she concluded what happened after her last dream walk with her...picture an empty bed where her comatose body once rested and sorrowful looks from the attendants when asked about her whereabouts.  Thing is though...things aren't always what they seem and it takes all the strength Aislin has within as well as the trust of her family to take a chance with her gift once again to try and save her brother.  Can one young lady wake the little boy from his tragic slumber or will he slip through her fingers like the last?  Only one way to find out, so brace yourself and dive in feet first for a read you won't soon forget that reminds us that it IS the differences, the things that make us "weird" that make us special, unique, and utterly one of a kind.
