CHILDREN'S BOOK WEEK: Chase Tinker & the House of Magic by Malia Ann Haberman

Hi guys and gals!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

So, if you haven't heard, we are right smack at the start of CHILDREN'S BOOK WEEK and while I'm participating in a GIVEAWAY HOP of epic proportions (which you should TOTALLY enter), I've also got a slew of kid friendly books on the docket for review.  You're bound to find something for the little reader in your life, or yourself if you're a fan of using your imagination and getting lost in worlds of whit, wonder, and enchantment...I know I AM.  With that in mind, I'm turning today's spotlight on the first book in a Children's Fiction series that does all of that and then some.  I actually read it a few weeks back but as my schedule fluctuates from time to time, I sat on the review (not literally) JUST for this event.  You don't have to thank me know...but you will be by review's end.  Ready, set, here we go!  Today's ebook of choice is...

Chase Tinker, Book 1
by
Malia Ann Haberman

About the book....
In Chase Tinker's world, magic, lies, and secrets can be a lethal combination...

Thirteen-year-old Chase Tinker's usually-normal life has taken an unexpected turn. Several shocking family secrets have come to light and he's seriously freaked out about it. His missing dad, bizarre magical powers, a grandfather he thought to be long dead, a fantastic, out-of-this-world magical house, and an evil Dark Enemy bound and determined to destroy Chase's family are only part of all the craziness. Now Chase, along with his younger brother Andy and his cousin Janie, must find a way to stop these evil beings, while at the same time figuring out what's happened to his dad, unraveling even more Tinker lies and secrets, while not letting on that he has a crush on the housekeeper's daughter.

We begin with a father lost, a sister sent to his rescue, and family secrets coming to life like you wouldn't believe.  Whereas Harry had the famous "You're a wizard..." speech, the Tinker boys had just as much surprise...but with parents currently in residence that shared NOTHING.  *-*  Seriously!  Can you believe it?  I get the whole protecting them thing, or even "if they don't know, they can't use it" thought pattern, but come on...when has that EVER worked?  Yeah...not so much here either (well, for the story yes, but for the boys no).  Instead of being alerted to their magical potentials, they are left wondering how on earth Chase can move things without touching them and Andy can freeze time when that's suppose to be impossible.

Flash forward a smidge and the boys are getting a crash course in their family heritage thanks to dear old Grandpa...who can teleport, among other things.  They discover their magic comes from their father's side, he isn't just away on business but MISSING, and no one seems to know where, why, or what's going on.  While things are attempting to be worked out, the Tinker children and "friends" (term used VERY loosely) practice their skills, and explore the house of magic surrounding them.  It's pretty cool actually, and not just in a BIG HUGE mansion sort of way.  It seems that when a member the of the Tinker clan passes, a new room is added to the house magically and whatever talent the person had in life can now be utilized by all that enter the room and unlock it's secrets.  Nifty, right?  In the right hands, yes...but if they should fall into the WRONG hands... *gulp*.

Flash forward again and we're in dire straits.  Despite the seemingly sinister Doctor that may not be all the he seems, there are bigger fish to fry and lives to save.  Clair, the boy's aunt, appears on the scene MUCH worse for wear and sans her brother.  It's strange, it's peculiar, but it's not something to be sorted right away seeing as she's barely alive herself.  Her failing health combined with the growing tension in the house on all fronts, and a darkness beginning to creep past all their defenses, and there is a fight coming that no one is truly prepared for.  Will the Tinkers be able to pull together to save the day and the magic that they've been entrusted with for centuries or will evil finally get the upper hand?  Only one way to find out...and THIS adventure is only the beginning.

In the end, it was a fascinating read that had me flicking epages long into the night and well past my bedtime.  We've got time travel, magic, friendship, childhood crushes, family, and so much more percolating just beneath the surface that there's something for everyone.  The twists and turns strewn throughout knock you for a loop.  Just when you think you have the story or a character pegged for this or that, BAM...think again!  The author weaved a magical spell over us all within these pages...I can only imagine what's in store for us in the rest of the series.

Recommended read for Children's Fiction readers of all ages.

About the author...

Picture

Once upon a time a girl named Malia dreamed of being an author. (Sigh) She desperately wanted to write books that everyone in the whole universe could read and enjoy. So she packed a snack and happily set out on the road of life. But times being what they were, she was attacked by dreadful dragons and greedy goblins and terrible trolls who all tried their hardest to stomp her dream into dust. Brandishing her well-sharpened pencil at them, she bravely yelled, "You will not stop me, you wicked fiends! Away with you, or I'll erase you with my trusty writing implement!" And so they fled to shiver and hide in dank caves and dark holes.

One day, out of the blue, the most incredible, awesome idea came to her. She was so excited, she hugged her furry ferret friend and happy-danced all around the kingdom. Then, putting fingertips to keyboard, she typed out a magical story to end all magical stories, filling it with fun, magic, adventure, thrills, loathsome bad guys, and feisty, just-go-for-it characters, and even a troll or two. After many more trials and tribulations, all four of her books were finally published and ready to read and enjoy. Yay! Now, she's busily working on the sequel…

Malia also loves reading, ballroom dancing, watching TV, chocolate, pizza, avacados, Fall, driving her car, a cozy fire on a chilly night, ladybugs, snapdragons, Christmas trees, long summer days, full moons, Seahawks football, her computer, ipod, and ferrets.

She hates onions, spiders, bullying, mean people, waiting in line, jogging, getting up early, fleas, and the middle of winter when it gets dark at 4:30 in the afternoon.

She keeps Christmas lights up in her house all year round. She knows it's kinda weird, but they're so colorful and festive. Besides, she's sort of afraid of the dark and they make lovely night lights. :)
