Hi guys and gals!

So, today we're diving between the epages of an ebook I devoured this Friday.  Now, you know my history with ebooks (prefer paper, ebook only when absolutely necessary, blah blah blah), so the fact that I started AND finished it in a day without the deadline looming 24 hours or less in the future, should speak volumes, but in case it doesn't, here I go.  ^-^  Ladies and gents, let's take a walk through a Young Adult fairytale redo you won't soon forget!  Today's featured title is on deck...

Blue Moon series, Book 1
by
R.A. Desilets

About the book...
When Effy stumbles down the rabbit hole, she discovers the wondrous fairy tale land of East Valley in chaos. Death and insanity reign after the release of the deadly blue moon curse. Teaming up with the only sane people left—Jack the giant killer, Hansel, and Cat from Cheshire—they traverse East Valley, desperately searching for an answer.

They know Effy’s the key to unraveling the curse, but everyone who remembers how to break the curse is… well, cursed. The murderous mob has Effy in their crosshairs. With Snow, Red, Rapunzel, Gretel, and Pinocchio on the group’s trail, Effy isn’t sure any of them will make it out alive.

...Alice fell down a rabbit hole...
...Beauty loved a Beast...
...Red Riding Hood was eaten by a wolf...
...Snow White escaped her Evil Stepmother...
...Princess Aurora (Rose) pricked her finger...
...Cinderella lost her shoe but found her Prince...
...Prince Charming(s) did there required thing...
...Rapunzel let down her hair...
...Pinocchio was a real boy...
...Hansel and Gretel outwitted a witch...
...the Cheshire Cat riddled his way through madness...
...and Jack killed a giant.

The end...well, in our world at least.

Now, journey with me to East Valley, where the fairytales we know and (mostly) love come to life...just not exactly the way we've come to know them.  Apparently, the versions we were told growing up were simply partial life and times that bled through from their world to ours and when you take into account the actual differences, WOO BUDDY!  Let's see if I can repaint your perception without ruining the story for you...

Image result for stack of books...Effy is Alice and indeed falls down a rabbit hole, but no waistcoat wearing long-eared bunny is to be found, though the clock is ticking!
...Beauty (beastly!), Red (wolves fear her), Snow (and her stepmother was the evil one?), Rose (definitely not the life of the party), Cinderella (initially felt sorry for the girl, but didn't last past midnight), even the Prince's Charming (no way I'd be falling for THEM)....SO NOT WHAT YOU'RE EXPECTING!  That's all I can say on their accounts...sneak peeks are great but you've got to get to know them in the story!  Same goes for the wicked puppet, half the H&G duo, Horner, the Piper, and several others that make an appearance.
...the wily cat we grew to love is indeed still lovable and just as riddled with riddles but far more human in this tail, I mean tale.
...and Jack, well...let's just say he makes a bigger impression than he did in the fairytale despite the fact he never got the girl (or did he?  dun dun dunnnnn....).

Confused? Curious?  Scrambling to finish my review so you can go investigate it yourself?  I don't blame you in the least!  To me, it's one of those creative gems you may have overlooked but are oh so glad it came to your attention because the adventure was just that good.  Now, while I loved it as a whole, and I truly did, I had two minor moments of irritation that I do need to note.  Blacking it out due to potential spoilers, so highlight the text with caution!

First, how quickly Effy manages to accept what's happening is not a dream (or is it?) but reality (or is it?  Okay, I'll stop doing that for now... ^-^).  Considering she's prized for her logical take on things, it didn't seem to jive with her character.  Second, when Rose is awakened it's almost like a nonevent even though it was such a huge thing they were trying to accomplish for a decent portion of the book.  I get it, much bigger things or dangerous things at least were happening at the time, but I was expecting a little more TADA type of moment to occur.

To conclude, this is an EXCELLENT way to revisit the fairytale characters you know and love in a whole new way, while getting on board with a new series you'll want on your radar.  I highly enjoyed my time in East Valley and can't wait for a chance to visit again...we are going, aren't we?  I mean that ending sorta got me thinking that we would need to...

About the author...

I'm Rachel A. Desilets, or R.A.Desilets, and my writing is all over the place.  Young Adult literature is definitely my main focus, but I do dabble in horror and humor on occasion.  With YA, I love to write magical realism, paranormal, and urban fantasy.  I love to change just one facet of the real world and create something new and different.  Sometimes, when the characters are strong enough, I'll write contemporary.

I was raised in a small town in New Hampshire and moved to Boston to attend Emerson College.  I graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor's in Writing, Literature, and Publishing.  This is the part where I tell you that I was an overachiever and also majored in Television Production and got a minor in Photography.  It was actually a lot of fun.

After graduating, I moved to southern California and turned my life into a bit of a cliche. I worked as a barista and met my husband while serving him coffee. We got married and adopted a bunch of cats. I currently reside in Oregon.

When I'm not writing, I play video games, drink tea, read way too much (though, is there such a thing?), and snowboard.
