Mudmen Trilogy, Book 1
by
Shitij Sharma

About the book...
What if you thought you could play a better god than God?

Mudmen is a story unlike anything you have ever seen before. It all starts with a half-crazed dwarf scribbling furiously on a piece of paper while the world outside his little cottage is ravaged by a great storm. There is an artifact in his possession which gives him power over all else, but that artifact is stolen by the very creatures that he gave birth to in his frustration – these creatures are what we come to know as the Mudmen.

"There is nothing frightening about an eternal dreamless sleep. Surely it is better than eternal torment in hell and eternal boredom in heaven."
– Isaac Asimov, A Memoir

What a curious way to begin a novel and yet it works perfectly to set your mind in the proper gear for the forthcoming story...and what a story it is.  We begin with an odd little man writing away in his secluded cabin as the world outside...well, it's pretty much destroyed AND rebuilt by each stroke of his quill.  Curious, right?  All the more curious is when that world begins to take on a life of its own, outside of his written words, without his influence or guidance, and much to his chagrin.  Enter, the Mudmen.  They are called such because they were borne from the very substance itself combined with several reams of the little man's own work which he destroyed...or rather attempted too.  Apparently, it's much easier to create new life or continue its story, than it is to erase its very existence (How's that for the power of words?), and these newly borne Mudmen have a purpose, a fate, if you will.  Grant it, they have nothing to go on but instinct at this point, that's more than enough to get their feet shuffling, their muddied collective minds moving, and the story progressing to an unknown but intriguing end (for now...it IS a trilogy after all).

It reads like a Young Adult novel of High Fantasy, geared for the older set.  What really drew me in was the mysterious synopsis, I had to know more about the artifact and what powers it gave the owner.  Once uncovered, it was something that seemed like an amazing thing to be in control of, but really...how much control do you actually have?  Something to think about, for certain, but also explored in the text.  I continued my journey through the epages in order to explore the circling thoughts, the deeper meaning passages, and watch as humanity was found within those creatures that shouldn't exist and yet did.  The way their journey shaped them (quite literally) felt accurate, and seeing the very qualities the little old man tried to write out of the world find their way back spoke much about man's most base emotions, drives, and needs.  By book's end, I was fascinated by the world presented and very curious to see where it lead us next.

In the end, it was an enjoyable quest and one I would certainly recommended for older teens through adults looking for a thinking man's Fantasy novel.
