Today, I'm pleased as punch to be bringing you a stop along the current Rachel's Random Resources tour featuring the latest release from one of my favorite Historical Romance authors, Virginia Heath! Once upon a time, a young woman with a brain was matched with a body the opposite sex found beyond appealing. Despite being more demure times, their minds were clouded by baser needs, making their company less than desirable. The lady in question is Ms. Hope Brookes...and quite frankly she's had enough! She stumbles upon a way to waylay at least one pursurer with the help of a slighty inebriated gent who happens upon her in the gardens. Though under the influence, it does not stop his tongue, and the refreshing if not blunt assessment of BOTH their situations intrigues her, but only just. When she then employs his assistance in putting a halt to the aforementioned pursuer headed their way...his choice in how to end matters may have been faulty thank to the drink, but it didn't make it any less enjoyable for them both!
OH, my. The end to that scene was too much, and I'm not talking a revelation of ankles or anything else scandalous in that fashion, though it DOES make the gossip circles. Once again, author Virginia Heath offers us a Historical Romance with substance, with beauty, with a heroine that won't take things lying down, and an eventually gallant hero-type that while needing a knock or two upside the head at times, can still see the extreme value in having a woman by his side that can speak her mind, share her feelings, and embrace the day! *sigh* OH, wait, I'm suppose to be reviewing still, umm...
I adored our leading lady, Hope Brookes! Her dialogue was fabulous (when she told those idiot suitors what for and they still wouldn't quit!), her fashion sense understandable, her dreams well suited, and her sense of self remarkable. There wasn't a scene she was in that I didn't want to read straight from the page to anyone within hearing distance. The same goes for our leading man, Lucius aka "call me Luke"! He's been pulled into this new world by death, and yet the heartache from the loss doesn't hurt nearly as much as how he and his mother were and are treated, how his sister-in-law insists on pursuing him as a new family connection (eww), and how the ton view him as something to put under a magnifying glass to study. Let the poor chap have a few moments to gather his wits, won't you?! No matter as he's had to deal with harsher situations, and he can handle anything they want to throw at him...with the exception of Hope. She's not someone he saw coming, and yet, she's not someone he can see himself NOT knowing.
In the end, it was a WONDERFULLY FABULOUS story with characters you won't soon forget. Though second in the series, it reads perfectly fine as a standalone, but again...WHY wouldn't you want to read them all?! Trust me, you do!

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Despite that, it still takes her forever to fall asleep.
