Keeping up with the Kershaws
by
Helen Buckley

About the book...
What do you do when your life becomes more dramatic than reality TV?

As the devoted carer for famous antique expert Harold Kershaw, Karrie Morgan was always happy to keep a professional distance from his four spoilt grown-up children, who rarely made time for their father. But then a surprise involving Harold’s Will means Karrie is flung headlong into a press scandal, and into the chaotic world of the surviving Kershaws.

With the support of her trusted childhood friend Andrew, mild-mannered Karrie must face down ruthless ice queen Portia, master manipulator Gabriel, Botox fanatic Arabella, and ladies’ man Rafe, star of reality TV show Raised in Richmond … although perhaps not as fake and flashy as he initially seems?

As vicious rumours circulate and Karrie’s past comes back to haunt her, she struggles to know who to trust. Can she keep up with the Kershaws’ schemes?

Extract 2 – Keeping up with the Kershaws, Helen Buckley

In this extract the Kershaw siblings are discussing what to do about their father’s inheritance and the fact that his caregiver, Karrie, has inherited the entire estate. The tensions between the siblings are always simmering under the surface!

‘Oh, and Rafe?’ Gabriel said. ‘It would be just great if you could avoid splashing this all over your Instagram please. It’s, you know, a private matter.’

Rafe prickled with irritation at his condescending tone. ‘Right, Gabe. I’ll try to refrain,’ he said sarcastically, using the short version of his brother’s name, which he knew he hated.

‘We need some things kept private for once. The papers will get wind of what’s happened, but they don’t need to know any details from us. We won’t comment,’ Gabriel said.

‘I know how the media works too, you know,’ Rafe retorted.

Gabriel chuckled. ‘Oh yes, Mr A List, and how exactly is your reality TV series working out for you? Oh wait, I forgot, it just got cancelled, didn’t it?’

Rafe pressed his mouth into a thin line. It was true that Raised in Richmond was taking a break from filming, but he wasn’t worried about it, knowing he had plenty of opportunities lined up. ‘It wasn’t cancelled. We just all have other projects we want to focus on right now.’

‘Maybe you should try getting a real job for once, and using that thing between your ears called a brain, if you can locate it,’ Gabriel said.

The mood had turned uglier at the sniping and Rafe stood up. ‘I don’t need to sit here and listen to this,’ he declared. ‘Good luck with the solicitors.’

He slammed his coffee cup down on the glass table, ignoring the droplets that splashed over the side and marred the gleaming surface, much to Portia’s horror. Without another word he walked out of the house and headed to his car. He closed the door, seething as he turned the ignition, and decided to talk to any and every journalist who was interested enough to contact him. He knew the story would get out anyway; it was inevitable. His dad had been fairly famous, often called upon by the Royal Family. He was a key advisor to Sotheby’s, with regular TV presenting slots. His estate was huge and a story like this was too good for journalists to ignore. If there were interviews to be done, Rafe would do them, and make sure he was quoted in a favourable light.

After all, publicity was publicity, he thought, as he drove away from his sister’s house, leaving his siblings behind.
