About the book...

Riddled with guilt and tormented by desire, Lucy Short keeps notes about newcomers to the village, but why? The misfit with the rescue dog has a mysterious past. She’s been biding her time, plotting and scheming, and now she’s determined to get what she deserves. It won’t be straight forward. Someone is sure to be watching her every move, and there seems to be something more sinister going on.

Mr. Lester Senior is dead. The family is in turmoil. The future of the famous village treasure hunt is in doubt, but for Lucy a new world beckons. She must stick to her task. The rewards could be huge, but will there also be a price to pay?

~~~   Q&A with Author Beth Merwood   ~~~
1. What inspired you to be a writer? Was it a lifelong dream or sudden desire?
I’d always written for myself, on and off. I made tiny books as a child: wrote them, illustrated them and sewed in a seam! A few years back I decided to have a go at publishing a novel, and my debut, The Five Things, was published in 2021.
2. The writing process is different for everyone. What do you love about it the most? On the other hand, what do you loathe the most?
I think my favorite part is writing a first draft, once an idea is in place. At that point, I can become completely absorbed. When I stop for the day, I like to know what I’m going to write next. I look forward to getting back on the laptop. In the meantime the story plays in my head and I can’t help re-writing or thinking over what’s to come.
I enjoy writing because of that absorption and can lose track of time when I’m working on a story. I like escaping into the world that I am creating.
I’m not so keen on the final stages of editing.
3.  Any must haves for when you're in the writing mood?
I need a quiet setting. I prefer to be on my own and away from anything that might interrupt me. A cup of coffee helps too!
4. What about the Mystery/Cosy Suspense genre appealed to you?
I think I write what comes naturally. I believe my first and my current novel fit more than one genre. Both are mysteries, but neither is a typical mystery. In my eyes, my debut novel was more literary and my latest novel is more cozy. I have written some magical realism in the past, and that’s a genre I would like to explore a little more.
5. In ten words or less, describe your latest novel (The Ultimate Village Game)?
Lucy Short returns to the village…with a plan…
6. Any favorite characters or scenes from this novel that you'd love readers to take extra notice of?
I enjoyed writing Lucy’s backstory. It is key to understanding her, and almost a story within a story.
7. There's always a budding writer in the audience. Any advice you wish you were given when you started your writing journey that you'd care to pass on to the next generation?
I suppose just keep going. I see writing as something I enjoy and anything that comes with it as a bonus. In terms of finding an agent or publisher in the first instance, I changed my enquiry letter frequently and tried to research where or who was best to approach. I didn’t send huge batches of enquiry letters out.
It can be disappointing when people say no, but you must refuse to be put off. Every book is received well by some and not so well by others. You only need to scan a few reviews of a book you love to see that not everyone is in agreement.
Thanks for the questions! - Beth
