Years ago, Will Cash wasn’t interested in being a dad.  So Marsha Bugler left town to raise her baby alone.  But when her father’s health begins to fail, she realizes she needs to return to Arizona – and introduce Will to his boy.  Marsha is nervous to face Will not only because she lied, but because she’s never stopped thinking about her cowboy crush.

Will is shocked to discover he has a son.  And he can hardly believe the changes in Marsha.  She’s strong, sexy and a Ph.D. while Will’s still a part-time cowboy living in a bunkhouse with his brothers.  What does he have to offer her and his teenage son?  Will has a lot to prove if he’s going to get what he wants – the family he never knew he had.

Okay, no booing or throwing things at me for saying this but the whole cowboy image thing…just doesn’t do a thing for me.  Of course, now that I’ve said that watch…I’ll be fated to be swept off my feet by some strapping guy in stirrups and wearing a ten gallon hat.  (*oye*) Now…wait.  Where are you going?  STOP RIGHT THERE!  Before you go shutting the window you’re reading this in, my inclination towards or away from this particular “hero” type, does not necessarily reflect my view of the story overall.  Just give me a second to get there, and you just might be pleasantly surprised.  Now, where were we….oh yes.  I remember!

When I think of Harlequin Romance novels, I think of the “classic” stereotype….covers studded with heaving bosoms, rakishly handsome bare-chested heroes, and internally, moments of Johnny and Judy from across a starlit field, and highly detailed encounters between (or not so much) the sheets…not that there’s anything wrong with all that, but it’s not exactly my cup of Diet Coke.  I’ve been proven wrong before and this time…though I wasn’t proven wrong entirely, I was shown that there are more facets to their catalog than meets the uneducated eye.  Yes, I was amongst them, but no more.  Let’s take it back to today’s review…

Here we have a story starring the bad boy in town (or rather one of several as he does have brothers) and the preacher’s daughter.  Senior year, prom time.  She had the crush, he needed a date…can we see where this is going?  Including the “after party”…*ahem*.  As biology has taught us, if certain acts are carried out without taking into account the consequences, results may vary…in this case, a plus sign on the test would be about accurate.  They were young, they were impulsive, they were…not ready for THIS responsibility.  One party said nay, but the other, couldn’t bring themselves to cut short the life that had only just begun.  Seems heroic right?  Well, no doubt it is…I mean raising a child on your own at any age with or without helping hands is a task and a half (hats off to those who do it and do it well!), but the fanfare for her choice would have been THAT much louder…had she told the father.  *dun dun dunnn*

That’s right!  Imagine the surprise finding out years later that you have a teenage son.  Whew!  What’s that?  ~listens~  Oh, you can’t imagine that?  Well then, read the story…it’s all in there and so much more, including who betrayed whom (shocking really and with such a STRONG reaction), who grew up (or didn’t…and who just might be ready to), who’s experiencing a health crisis of major concern, and just what’s in store for not only the starring trio but the whole Cash clan!  Hey, life’s an adventure and these guys have definitely bought a ticket to ride...and speaking of “these guys”….you’ll love getting to know the Cash clan.  They’re a bunch of rough and tumble cowboy types but for the most part, they’ve got hearts of gold.  Go figure, right?  (*smirk*)

In the end, it’s a boy meets girl, boy both makes and breaks a connection with girl, a bond that’s never truly severed and a second chance presented that may prove even more impossible to fathom than the first.  Oh well, what’s love without a little risk, right?  ^-^  Recommended read for older teens through adult readers; surprisingly there is really just one, maybe two, scenes of “concern” for younger eyes and they last for barely a two page spread, but don’t worry readers…there is plenty of tension to satisfy those that crave that emotional high a bit more.
