Inspired by Hispanic folklore, legends, and myths from the Iberian Peninsula and Central and South America, this bold sequel to Charlie Hernández & the League of Shadows, which Booklist called “a perfect pick for kids who love Rick Riordan” in a starred review, follows Charlie as he continues on his quest to embrace his morphling identity.

Charlie Hernandez still likes to think of himself as a normal kid. But what’s normal about being a demon-slaying preteen with an encyclopedic knowledge of Hispanic and Latino mythology who can partially manifest nearly any animal trait found in nature? Well, not much. But, Charlie believes he can get used to this new “normal,” because being able to sprout wings or morph fins is pretty cool.

But there is a downside: it means having to constantly watch his back for La Mano Peluda’s sinister schemes. And when the leader of La Liga, the Witch Queen Jo herself, is suddenly kidnapped, Charlie’s sure they’re at it again.

Determined to save the queen and keep La Liga’s alliances intact, Charlie and his good friend Violet Rey embark on a perilous journey to track down her captors. As Charlie and Violet are drawn deeper into a world of monstruos and magia they are soon left with more questions than answers—like, why do they keep hearing rumors of dead men walking, and why is Charlie suddenly having visions of an ancient evil: a necromancer priest who’s been dead for more than five centuries?

Charlie’s abuela once told him that when dead men walk, the living run in fear. And Charlie’s about to learn the truth of that—the hard way.

¡Dios mío!
This was quite the adventure!  You've got everything from your average Middle School drama to the added worries of mythical creatures popping up when you least expect them, skeletons on a mission to sprouting rather interesting fur, feathers, and other enhanced body parts at unusual moments, and of course life and death, DANGER, and the potential for THE END OF THE WORLD!  You know, nothing your average kid can't handle...or not!  Good thing Charlie is anything other than average, and yet doesn't have a big head about him.  He and his bestie Violet have each others backs...even when the going gets tough and the tough are required to go to parts unknown across the world via magical gateways hiding in plain site...and, you know, uncover the conspiracy brewing with some of the undead, and handle being kidnapped by another mythical being from his heritage.  Just your average walk in the park...or stroll through the graveyard!

I loved the way actual folklore was built into the story because it gave readers an opportunity to not only have a great reading escape, but learn more about a culture they may not have previously known.  The relationship between Charlie and Violet was adorable...well, from my standpoint anyway.  You could see the possibility of something there, but weren't certain if it would ever materialize; no, I won't be spoiling the surprise.  The way the story twisted and turned in on itself kept you guessing...one moment we know clear as day who the "bad guy" is...and the next, maybe it's as clear as mud...but it also reminded us that people, or creatures that aren't exactly people, are not always black and white.  There are many shades of gray in-between, and while we may not always do the right thing, it's the actions we take after those mistakes that can truly show the world who we are.

A great addition to a series I've not yet explored...but you can bet I will be!
