For fans of Twisted Tales and Villains is a brand new YA series that retells the classic Disney stories you thought you knew from the Disney Princes' perspectives.

Before Prince Eric’s mother, the Queen of Vellona, went missing two years ago, she reminded him about the details of the deadly curse that has plagued his entire life. The curse? If he were to kiss someone other than his true love, he would die. With a neighboring kingdom looking for any excuse to invade their shores, and rumors of ghost pirates lurking the seas, Eric is desperate for any information that may help him break his enchantment and bring stability to Vellona. The answers he has been searching for come to him in the form of a letter left from his mother that reveals Eric must find his true love, the one with a voice pure of heart,or kill the sea witch responsible for cursing him in the first place.

Now Eric is on a quest to find the Isle of Serein, the witch's legendary home. But after he is rescued by a mysterious young woman with a mesmerizing singing voice, Eric’s heart becomes torn. Does he enter a battle he is almost certain he cannot win or chase a love that might not even exist? And when a shipwrecked young woman with flaming red hair and a smile that could calm the seven seas enters his life, Eric may discover that true love isn’t something that can be decided by magic.

Anytime someone takes a tale you know so well, and gives it a makeover, you're gonna worry, or at least, I am.  This one isn't so much a makeover, but a viewpoint change, so instead of seeing it through the eyes of Ariel, we're guided along by Prince Eric.  What does it do to the story?  Well, it sort of fills in the gaps a bit regarding Eric's past, the reasons he does what he does in the present, and why his vision for the future was more about others than himself.  I found it rather interesting the amount of story that was actually added without losing the original tale.  There are familiar moments, and even some exact dialogue that carries over from the animated film many of us grew up with, which pleased me immensely.  Despite a lack of prolonged conversations with the seaside creatures, we don't lose all of that magic because there's the mention of a striking blue and yellow fish following the boat, there's Grimsby's missing crab entrée at dinner, and even the squawking serenade of a well intentioned but not musically inclined seagull makes an appearance.

My point is that it's not the same magic, but it's magical just the same.  It makes it's own mark while still keeping us in time with the original tale.  All the added backstory, mystery, people, and places, just go to draw you in even more, while not taking away from what you already know and love.  A curse where you could only kiss your true love without dying?  Could you imagine living with that, let alone suffering all the loss that Eric and his friends have been through.  The Blood Tide is another thing that is out of this world with treachery, and how it affects people is mindboggling!  The isle is like forbidden fruit...appealing on the outside, but once its true colors are revealed from within, scarring to the eyes.  The friends and makeshift family Eric has surrounded himself with make for a curious bunch, but they would all step in for each other without hesitation, if the need called.  Trust me, we get to see it in action a time or two.

All in all, a great start to what seems like a promising series, and a wonderful read for those that adored the original tale of our gal Ariel...but wished for something just a little bit more!
