This book was nothing I thought I was getting at first glance, and yet it had SO MUCH! We have a fantastical world with captivating characters, hi-jinx prone animal companions, and a quest of sorts to save the day! Our little leading lady and her unexpected steed (hence the title) are in the spotlight, not out of simple desire but need. They've taken it upon themselves, each in their own way of course, to help right the wrongs that have been committed; in this case, the potential outing of the orphans, including Ofe herself, from the only home they've ever known, and the care of the only mother figure they've had. They were the underdogs, so to speak, and no one ever saw them coming, but thanks to the dream from "uppity stairs" (sorry, I really like that reference!) as guidance, a whole lot of prayer, a mountain of determination, and a never-say-never attitude to boot, they just might have a chance at reaching their goal. What? I wasn't going to SPOIL it for you. That would have been rude!
The brilliance of this one is that readers get so caught up in the adventure, they don't necessarily see the higher power connections, so the worry of being preached to in lieu of having a story shared is alleviated. A second stroke of wonder in that department are the wonderful illustrations throughout. From cover to page drawings, you spend just as much time looking at each image as you do the story because they are a great match, working together to really bring the tale to life. By book's end, despite this being the start of a new series, things are still tied up, the good guys have their day, and the bad guys receive a bit of comeuppance, but all of it is doled out in fair measure equal to the act of selflessness or crime committed.
A great start to what sounds like a promising series, and the perfect way to get the kiddo in your life hooked from the very start...
