RRR presents... The House Sitter by Elizabeth Drummond - REVIEW!

The lady doth protests too much is an often true phrase applied to romance tinged novels, and today's Rachel's Random Resources guest is not immune to the association.  When tempers flare, it's often because we care enough to fight for it, but when sparks fly as a result, the outcome can be extraordinary.  Ladies and gents, time to meet today's unlikely potential couple and our ebook of choice...

The House Sitter
by
Elizabeth Drummond

About the book...
His house. Her rules. But who’s in charge?

Pippa Munro had everything planned for her perfect wedding. What she did not have planned, was for her boyfriend to break up with her. Or sell her beloved farm. So instead of being blissfully engaged, Pippa finds herself jobless, homeless and loveless. Things couldn’t be going better…

Wolfie Squires needs someone to look after his family’s ancient house. He’s too busy with his hot shot city job to deal with a country manor several hundred miles away.

The perfect solution? Find someone to house sit.
The less-than-perfect candidate? Pippa Munro.

Pippa is more comfortable working on a farm than dusting a chandelier, and definitely not the ideal choice for the job.

As tempers fray, ideas clash, and secrets are spilled, Pippa and Wolfie might realise they have the same ambitions for the house, if only they could stop arguing long enough to find out…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We meet Pippa as a young girl just starting out in the world.  She has friends by her side, plans for the future, and a boyfriend to pass the time with...or not.  The future has a way of surprising us, for better AND worse, and while dreams can come true, they don't always do so in the way we're expecting.  Give fate a timeline, and watch it laugh right back at you!
I enjoyed seeing these two, Pippa and Wolfie, go head to head.  Even from their first moments on the grounds, you could sense their relationship would be something to watch.  They both had clear visions of what the here and now should be for each of them that they often got in their own way.  Jealousy is definitely a green-eyed monster that raises its recognizable head a few times throughout the tale, but to what end, I'll let you discover because the smiles are all in the moments, and the details warm the heart.  Definitely threads of the infamous grumpy/sunshine trope we all know and love...well, I know and love...and as we reach for that happily-ever-after nothing is fully tied up with a bow until book's end, so prepare your heart for the ride!
A great pick for Contemporary Fiction fans as well as Contemporary Romance readers, and a fun way to wile away a weekend.
Not Quite a Scandal
Audacious Ladies of Audley Book 2
by Bliss Bennet
Genre: Historical Regency Romance
An inheritance lost. A betrothal threatened. A scandal brewing…
Outspoken Quaker Bathsheba Honeychurch knows how difficult it is for an unmarried woman to successfully champion political change. Her solution? Wed best friend Ash Griffin as soon as he comes of age and begin remaking the world. But when Ash’s urbane, aloof cousin arrives with inconceivable news, Sheba’s future dreams are suddenly at risk…
The death of the Earl of Silliman reveals an appalling lie: it is not Noel Griffin, but his long-lost cousin Ash, who is the true heir to their grandfather’s title. Raised to place family above all, Noel accepts his grandmother’s bitter charge: find Ash, disentangle him from his religious community, and train him to take on the responsibilities and privileges of a title that Noel had been raised to believe was his. Noel certainly won’t allow a presumptuous, irritating Quakeress to thwart him in doing his duty—no matter how fascinating he finds her...
When scandal threatens both their reputations, can Sheba and Noel look beyond past dreams and imagine a new world—together?
Storybook Sunday... THE STORYTELLER by Lindsay Bonilla, Illustrated by Noar Lee Naggan - REVIEW!
We're celebrating another day of bookish fun with Storybook Sunday! For those not up to speed on the post, I read a lot of great storybooks and thought, why not give them their own day in the sun. Hence, Storybook Sunday appears every now and then!
Today's featured title celebrates its BOOK BIRTHDAY next month and brings us a tale of beauty, and love much deeper than you might at first perceive. So, if you're ready to be reminded of the true power of stories and those that tell them, sit back, relax, and keep reading as we introduce today's book of choice...
RELEASE DATE: March 5th, 2024
About the book...
Griffin’s grandmother spins the most marvelous stories, from breathtaking fairy tales to fascinating family lore. These stories fuel his imagination and fill their days with magic. So when he sees her once-bright spark begin to fade, Griffin is scared to think of the future. Fortunately, though, he has her stories to guide him—and to remind him that he is braver than he could ever imagine.
πŸ“•   πŸ“—  πŸ“˜  πŸ“™  πŸ“˜   πŸ“—  πŸ“•
This gorgeously told story tells of a grandson's love for his grandmother, the Storyteller, and the wonderful ways that those we cherish stay with us always.
I gotta admit, this book arrived at an appropriate time in my life with my family's recent loss, but it also packed quite the punch for the very same reasons. The images that bring us through page after page relay in brilliant colors the life lessons we share through tall tales, make believe, and imagination... even when we're not looking for them. The words used portray the tender memories we're making even when we are unaware and the power they will hold when one day we become the Storyteller ourselves. I loved seeing this pair celebrating their time together as much as I loved scouring the scenes for images hidden in the background, bidding their time until needed for this lesson, or to illustrate a memory that held more than fairytales.
From cover to cover, this is a beautiful book in both imagery and tale that would make a wonderful addition to any family library.
RRR presents... It's Complicated by Camilla Isley - REVIEW!
Romcom fan?
You've come to the right place today because Rachel's Random Resources is stopping by with a tour starring the latest from author Camilla Isley. This isn't my first rodeo with her work, and I've enjoyed my encounters in the past, so O couldn't wait to get between the epages of this one.  Care to join me? Let's go!
It's Complicated
by
Camilla Isley
Boldwood Books
About the book...
Lori has been in love with her best friend Aiden since college. Now Aiden (handsome, fair, All-American dream doctor) is getting married, and Lori desperately needs a date to the wedding.
So she asks the best man, Jace (tall, dark, and brooding), to pretend their platonic friendship is something more not to have to face the worst day of her life alone.
Fake dating one best friend to forget the other should be easy… Plot twist—it’s not. When Jace starts acting like the sweetest, most attentive boyfriend, Lori begins to wonder if she’s been seeing him wrong all this time?
They've been an inseparable trio since freshman year, but now everything is changing — and that's not even bringing Jace's feelings into the mix.
Basically? It’s complicated.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

OMG! This book was SO much fun! We've got fake dating, unrequited love, a love triangle, and friends to lovers with a happily ever after twist you're simply going to love!

Lori had a crush on Aiden, Jace had a crush on Lori, and Aiden never really had a chance to understand what feelings he might have had for Lori thanks to a secret pact... which I will not be going into so I don't spoil the details. Anywho, one wedding announcement later, and Lori and Jace are presenting an unexpected, but united front to face the music... and falling in love along the way. It's sweet, funny, heartfelt with just the perfect amount of spice, you'll be laughing as much as you're sighing with every turn of the page.

By book's end, there's a happy surprise you won't see coming, but, trust me, you'll gladly be a witness to the events that unfold. A wonderful pick for romcom fans and Romance readers alike, and a great addition to this author's growing body of works!

AWARENESS TOUR: Ode to a Pug by Jill Rosen, Illustrated by Stephanie Rohr - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!

*WOOF WOOF*
Today's post is going to the dogs, and the dog lovers!  The Children's Book Review is currently featuring a furry, friendly, cutesy little storybook on their latest AWARENESS TOUR that stars man's best friend, companion, co-captain, and loveable agent of chaos...or more specifically, the PUG!  So get ready to SIT, STAY, and read because you'll be begging for more by post's end, and I don't blame you in the least!

About the book...
A precocious pug delights in shenanigans which drive her frazzled owner to declare she will give her pup away!

Laugh along with the snorting, snoring, and gaseous clown of the canine world as its owner struggles to reign in the messes and mayhem of a new addition. But there is nothing that a few licks and cuddles can’t fix, right?

A true delight that any family can relate to, Ode to a Pug is full of heart… and a lot of slobber.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This kid friendly, but also adult friendly, storybook features the wild and wooly times of a little pug and his owner.  From zoomies to chewing on EVERYTHING, feeding time to TOOTing time, cuddles to dress up, and all things in between, it shares the beauty of the dog and dog parent relationship in all its brilliant colors.
Let's face it, anyone that has a dog can attest to the wonderful times to be shared, but also the utter chaos that can break out the moment you turn your head, step out of the room, or the mood strikes.  I've had dogs throughout my life, and we added a puppy around Christmas time.  She's still "little" in age, but GROWING bigger each day, so while she sits sweet and prim for a cookie, the zoomies multiple times a day take on a new meaning when you're dealing with a now 30ish pound puppy!  Let's just say DUCK AND COVER is a phrase you hear AND obey if you're in her path.  (LOL!)  Are there moments you think man, I just need some quiet time  or  I really don't want to take a walkie right now ...for certain, but would I trade her for the world?  HECK to the NO!  Same goes for our little smooshy nosed furry terr...I mean, cuddle bug...here.  He may get into things he shouldn't, demand time and attention when you're at wits end, but in hindsight, it's well worth the loads of love in return.
If you're a dog lover, YOU NEED THIS BOOK!  If you're a dog parent, YOU'VE LIVED THIS BOOK, but you still need it to commiserate and reminisce.  Whether you're a kiddo or simply one at heart, take a moment to indulge yourself with this one.  You won't be sorry!
RRR presents... A Wartime Welcome from the Foyles Bookshop Girls by Elaine Roberts - REVIEW!
Hello friends.
Welcome back to another bookish day here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.  We're ever so slowly getting back into the swing of things with everything going on, and I just wanted to say that I appreciate everyone's kind words during this trying time.  Placing reality aside for a moment, let's take a look at the book on today's docket, shall we?
Rachel's Random Resources is once again making the rounds with a newly released Boldwood Books title that's ready to whisk you away to times gone by, indulge in your bookish nature, and embroil you in a mystery that could have dire consequences if not properly solved.  Sound like your cup of tea?  Well then, sit down for a spell and take a look between the epages of today's blog tour guest and ebook of choice...
A Wartime Welcome from the Foyles Bookshop Girls
by
Elaine Roberts
Boldwood Books
About the book...
London, 1918: the world is being torn apart by war, but for the girls of London’s Foyles bookshop, where there is friendship, there is hope…
Perfect for fans of Rosie Clarke and Elaine Everest.
Ellen Beckford and her sister Mary are living under their father’s shadow. Before their beloved mother died, they had dreamed of bright futures, but torn apart by grief, Harold Beckford barely lets his daughters out of his sight. Then Harold is injured during a break-in at his office at London’s docklands, and can no longer work. And with prices rising and food scarce, Ellen has no choice but to defy her father’s rules and seek employment. She finds a position at London’s renowned Foyles bookshop, and the other shop girls quickly take her under their wing.
But there are dark times ahead. Ellen’s father is accused of gathering intelligence from the docklands for the enemy, and the police seem determined to see him shot for spying. With the help of her new friends, can Ellen clear her father’s name and save her family from destitution?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Family, friends, and the future...all things we can never truly be certain of, but place our trust in nonetheless, come what may.  If we're lucky, we choose wisely and things play out as planned; if not, we suffer the consequences to make it to another day.  Most of us will be on the winning side most of the time, but there are times that are darker which befall us all, and it's up to us to let the light back in.

Such is the case here for Ellen and her father.  Times were hard enough without the sudden departure of one of their beloved, but they didn't let it strike a death toll for their present, nor their future.  They pulled together as best they could, did what needed doing to survive, and fought like heck to shut down the naysayers trying to throw shade on their good name for their own nefarious reasons.  Are they successful?  Well, that's for me to know and you to READ in order to find out, but I will say this...no task undertaken in the name of love and family is ever done only halfway.  Ellen, along with the help of her new friends, will learn much about life, much about matters of the heart, and much about the importance of fighting for those we care about most...including ourselves when necessary.

By book's end, things are set to right, or as right as they could be, and we're given a window into what may still be on the horizon for the characters we've come to know and love during our time between the pages.  A great addition to the series that can certainly be read as a standalone, and the perfect pick for Historical Fiction fans that like their stories with a bit of heart.

*** GUEST POST ***

How to Teach Toddlers Emotional Intelligence

Our feelings, emotions, and affection are what make us feel connected to ourselves and our surroundings. It is the foundation of every relationship we form in our lives—the fundamental element in building stronger and lasting human connections.

Yet, it is the most tricky thing to teach. We are complex creatures with differences in culture, beliefs, parenting, gender identity, environment, neuro differences, personal biases, and many, many more. These could almost guarantee that each of us is one-of-a-kind on this planet.

Despite our uniqueness, we have common needs to meet. One of these needs is the sense of having healthy emotional connections. BrenΓ© Brown famously quoted Maya Angelou with these words, "You are only free when you realize you belong no place - you belong every place - no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great." Basically, the core of belonging is being yourself. It takes experience, challenges, achievement… even a lifetime to achieve this. In essence, the philosophy of knowing oneself is through self-awareness and consciousness.

In the realm of child development, one of the crucial aspects to consider is emotional self-regulation. This is the ability of the child to control their own emotions, handle frustrations, and resist impulsive behavior. As parents, caregivers, teachers, and concerned adults, it is our responsibility to guide little ones on this journey of self-regulation.

Understanding Self-Regulation

Self-regulation, in its essence, refers to a child's capacity to manage their emotions and behavior in accordance with the demands of the situation. It encompasses the ability to resist highly emotional reactions to upsetting stimuli, calm oneself down when upset, adjust to changes in expectations, and handle frustration without outbursts. These skills mature as children grow, allowing them to direct their behavior toward goals despite the unpredictability of the world and their own feelings.

Identifying Emotional Dysregulation

Emotional dysregulation can manifest differently in each child. Some may display instantaneous, intense reactions without warning, while others may have a slower build-up, leading to a behavioral outburst. The common thread is the struggle to manage strong emotions effectively. It's essential to recognize these signs and address them proactively.

Factors Contributing to Self-Regulation Challenges

Several factors can contribute to a child's difficulties with self-regulation. These include inherent temperament and personality traits, which may make self-soothing more challenging for some children.

Additionally, the environment plays a significant role; when parents consistently step in to soothe or solve problems, children may struggle to develop self-discipline. Conditions such as autism or anxiety can further compound these challenges, making it crucial to provide tailored support.

Teaching Self-Regulation Skills

Teaching self-regulation skills is not about avoiding difficult situations but rather coaching children through them and providing a supportive framework. This process, often referred to as "scaffolding," involves breaking challenging activities into manageable parts.

For instance, if a child struggles with a particular task, such as brushing their teeth, start with a simplified step, like applying toothpaste to the brush. Praise their efforts and gradually add more steps as they gain confidence.

The Power of Practice Runs

Another effective method to scaffold self-regulation is through practice runs. If a child tends to react impulsively or have tantrums in specific situations, create low-stakes scenarios for them to practice better responses. For instance, if shopping trips are a trigger, make short visits where they can practice walking calmly and keeping their hands to themselves. Reward their successes to reinforce positive behavior.

Encouraging Self-Reflection

To foster self-regulation, it's essential to encourage self-reflection in children. When they make mistakes or exhibit impulsive behavior, approach the situation calmly and provide non-judgmental feedback. Discuss what went wrong, why it happened, and how they can handle it differently next time. Creating an environment that promotes thoughtful, reflective, and self-aware behavior is key to long-term success.

Additional Tools for Self-Regulation

In addition to the techniques mentioned above, mindfulness and meditation can be beneficial for children, particularly those with self-regulation challenges. These practices help children focus on the present moment and develop greater emotional awareness. Parent training programs offer valuable resources for caregivers looking to enhance their coaching skills. For older children, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) can provide essential tools for distress tolerance and emotion regulation.

The Family Environment's Role

Ultimately, the family environment plays a central role in fostering self-regulation. Consistency, patience, and ongoing support are fundamental. Remember that every child is unique, and progress may not always be linear. By modeling self-reflection and self-regulation, parents and caregivers create an environment where children can thrive and develop these crucial skills.

In conclusion, helping children improve their self-regulation skills is a vital aspect of their development. By understanding the nuances of self-regulation, identifying dysregulation, addressing contributing factors, and employing effective teaching methods, we can guide our children toward emotional maturity and self-control.

Remember, the journey may be challenging, but the rewards of seeing a child grow into a self-regulated individual are immeasurable.
