Atheneum Books for Young Readers
Release Date: October 1st, 2024

About the book...
Edie is a talented dancer and a skilled gymnast with hopes of making the Olympic team. Between her rigorous training and her struggle to find her place in a family where she’s the daughter “with brains but no looks,” Edie’s too busy to dwell on the state of the world. But life in Hungary in 1943 is dangerous for a Jewish girl.

Just as Edie falls in love for the first time, Europe collapses into war, and Edie’s family is forced onto a train bound for the Auschwitz concentration camp. Even in those darkest of moments, Edie’s beloved, Eric, kindles hope. “I’ll never forget your eyes,” he tells her through the slats of the cattle car. Auschwitz is horrifying beyond belief, yet through starvation and unthinkable terrors, dreams of Eric sustain Edie. Against all odds, Edie and her sister Magda survive, thanks to their sisterhood and sheer grit.

Edie returns home filled with grief and guilt. Survival feels more like a burden than a gift—until Edie recognizes that she has a choice. She can’t change the past, but she can choose how to live and even to love again.

As a reader that falls into Historical Fiction more often than not, taking in a nonfiction title from time to time would seem the natural progression. Some call to me, while others don't, but this was one I found myself reaching for.

While an adult counterpart exists, this Young Adult version of her original memoir plays to the intended audience. That is to say while they both convey her story, this version focuses more so on her personal journey, her feelings before, during, and after the events that unfold, and how she was able to find the strength to pull through another day when everything was crumbling around her. It reminds us that there is beauty even in the darkest of times, light to be found in the pitch black of night, courage to be found in the seemingly frailest of minds, and love to be fought for when our hearts are the only thing still free. I think teen readers will find a kinship in her struggles, even if they aren't in the same circumstances, because despite the terror that surrounds, she was still growing up, and discovering her self, her place in the world, and the difference she could make.

A beautifully shared story of a life lived through loss and triumph, Dr. Edith Eva Eger weaves a tale that you can't turn away from with lessons you won't want to forget.

RRR presents...Christmas at the Little Paris Hotel by Rebecca Raisin - REVIEW!

So we're closing out September with a find farewell, and looking ahead to more great read to come, including today's Rachel's Random Resources featured tour. It stars the latest release from author Rebecca Raisin, and whisks us away to Olde Paree for an adventure not sought, but needed just the same. Ladies and gents, let's take a closer look at today's featured title...

Christmas at the Little Paris Hotel
by
Rebecca Raisin
Boldwood Books

Turn a tumbledown Paris hotel into a perfect boutique, bookish retreat, and have it open for

Christmas? What could possibly go wrong?

When Anais receives a near-derelict Paris hotel in her divorce settlement, her first thought is to tidy it up and sell it immediately. All she wants is to move on and forget her disaster of a marriage ever happened.

But selling it proves impossible, so she has only one option: to make it gorgeous and open by Christmas… when her funds will almost certainly run out.

She’s not counting on the grumpy American bar-owner next door, Noah, coming and interfering at every moment though. Nor is she expecting to find a mysterious room – which holds the key to a one-hundred-year-old secret – about a woman who chose love against the odds.

One thing’s for sure… as the fairy lights twinkle all over the city of lights and the first snowflakes start to fall… this will be a Christmas in Paris to remember.

A totally gorgeous, escapist romantic comedy, with an unforgettable mystery! A perfect festive read for fans of Emily Henry and Sarah Morgan to curl up with this winter.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a story about love conquering all... even when it seems like the loneliest of paths, or takes a hundred years to come to light.
I loved how the author took us behind the mystery, into the aftermath of a marriage gone wrong, through the bumpy road that is finding yourself again, and helps us land softly enough with a new future in sight. It's not a smooth road to say the least, and I wish I could say that the divorce was the last time we see the slimeball that is her exe, but alas, I wouldn't want to sell you the dream and deliver the lie. He makes several appearances, and stirs up trouble to boot, but luckily our gal Anais has some great friends, and wonderful connections (maybe even one of the heart ❤️) that will help her get where she needs to be, both in body and soul.
A great addition to your coming holiday reading list, or any time you want a bookish pick me up that'll remind you that no matter the stakes, live is always worth it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Izzy is nervous, and I can't blame her!  The excitement that's bubbling in her tummy is turning the butterflies into rumbles, and her delight at showing everyone her talent into the dread of what could go wrong.  When she gets overwhelmed, she turns to the supportive presence of her stuffed bestie, Penny Panda, but she's not just full of fluff.  She's got some great advice and reminders that helps Izzy regain control of her emotional ninjas, and redirect that nervous energy into a grand performance.  She learns that it's okay to feel your emotions; we need them to experience life to its fullest, and they are there to help us in their own ways.  She learns that while they mean well, acknowledging them, understanding them, and growing from them is fully in her control.  She learns that she's not the only one that goes through these daily "battles" and that while it might not always be fun, it's a necessary part of life, part of growing up.

A great way to help kiddos through those tough times in a way that makes it a little less scary, and a lot more fun.  The colorful images help illustrate the benefits of each emotional ninja while making sure it's made perfectly clear that they answer to us.  They work for us to protect and warn, enchant and enhance, and a bit of everything in between, and there is nothing wrong with allowing them each their own time in the sun.  If we embrace them, we allow ourselves to be in the drivers seat and live for fully.  A wonderful addition to a home or school library, and an easy reach for those times that a little boost of confidence is needed to tackle whatever life may bring.

RRR presents... The Last Bookshop in Prague by Helen Parusel - REVIEW!

Get ready to step into a story from the past that'll feel like your present as we reach for a better future in today's featured tour! Bringing you another Rachel's Random Resources beauty, we've set our sights on the newest release from author Helen Parusel, a name whom you've seen here before, and a name I associate with stories to lose myself in. So, if you're ready to see how this latest venture went, keep reading and let the adventure begin...

The Last Bookshop in Prague
by
Helen Parusel

About the book...
Was she incredibly brave or incredibly stupid? Neither. Just a bookshop girl doing what she could against her country’s oppressors.

The banned books club was only the beginning; a place for the women of Prague to come together and share the tales the Germans wanted to silence.

For bookshop owner, Jana, doing the right thing was never a question. So when opportunity comes to help the resistance, she offers herself – and her bookshop. Using her window displays as covert signals and hiding secret codes in book marks, she’ll do all in her power to help.

But the arrival of two people in her bookshop will change everything: a young Jewish boy with nowhere else to turn, and a fascist police captain Jana can’t read at all. In a time where secrets are currency and stories can be fatal, will she know who to trust?

A heart-wrenching and powerful story of courage, tenacity and love. Fans of Suzanne Goldring, Mandy Robotham and Debbie Rix will devour this unforgettable novel.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As with the previous stories this author has shared, this story will have you by the heart from the first page until the last.  With well developed characters that move you, and a well written story that makes you feel, I found myself holding my breath more than once in anticipation of what might be coming, and hoping against hope that they'd make it through the hardships they were facing intact in body and soul.  Case in point, the initial run with our little lad hiding in the trunk and being held up at a Nazi check point.  EEK!    The historical elements place you in a time and place unfamiliar yet made familiar, exploring the rebellious nature of those with a bookish heart, while having to stand strong in the face of dangers yet to be revealed..and even those that come with a face that begs you to consider what's beneath the surface.
Filled to the brim with secrets, rebellion, and the chance at a better tomorrow, author Heather Parusel has created another bookish wonder that readers will want to get their hands on post haste.  If you're a fan of the genre, don't hesitate!  This should be on your must read list today!
About the author...
Helen Parusel is a historical novelist, having been a teacher and a clothes buyer for M&S. She currently lives in Hamburg.
About the book...
Tiki is an honest, fun, and adventurous boy full of integrity. Lately, his behavior has been too rambunctious and he needs guidance. He meets a magical spirit who gives him the guidance he is looking for and much more. The spirit grants him magical powers and sends him on a quest to save the village of TikiTown from the evil King Lauia. Come join Tiki and his friends as they go on a magical time-traveling journey to save TikiTown. Tiki and his friends must find King Lauia, take back the sacred magical Toku Mask, and return the mask to Tiki Town to unfreeze the town. If Tiki doesn’t succeed, TikiTown will remain frozen forever…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

*** GUEST POST ***
TOP FIVE LESSONS FROM TIKI'S ADVENTURES with Creator JJ

The top five valuable lessons kids can learn from Tiki’s adventures in TikiTown are understanding how behavior affects others, the value of character and integrity, building self-confidence, friendship, and teamwork.

Behavior Affects Others: In this story, Tiki is approached by his sister, Tari, about how his behavior has been off lately. Tiki comes to realize that he hasn’t been on the best behavior lately and that it is affecting his relationship with his sister. This helps kids realize that bad behavior can affect others, like friends and family, and that it is important to correct bad behavior. It also shows kids that, as you grow up, you may go through a period where your behavior is a little off. But listening to your parents, family, and teachers can help you improve your behavior.

The Value of Character and Integrity: When TikiTown comes under attack by the evil King Lauia, Tiki immediately develops a strong moral core. He knows good from evil and right from wrong. This helps him calm down his rambunctious behavior and instantly become much more like a heroic boy scout. During the adventure, Tiki overall starts making the right choices, becomes more disciplined, and is much more empathetic to friends and family. As Tiki grows throughout the story, this will teach kids the value and importance of developing character and integrity.

Building Self Confidence: During Tiki’s adventures, Tiki has a renewed vision of what he can accomplish when he meets the magical spirit, Fetu, and is granted magical powers. Fetu helps Tiki understand that it is okay to explore new things and challenge himself. Tiki develops a sense of self-worth and takes on challenging tasks that he would have never dreamed were possible. This is a metaphor for kids that teaches them that if you believe in yourself, you can do it.

The Value of Friendship: Tiki's friends Spookie, Phillip, and Tom Tom join him and his sister, Tari, on the magical quest to retrieve the magical toku mask from the evil King Lauia. As Tiki learns valuable lessons and builds self-confidence, he also shares what he has learned with his friends. This helps his friends also learn how behavior affects others, the value of character and integrity, building self-confidence, friendship, and teamwork. As the story continues, Tiki learns how valuable friendships are and how to cherish them. Kids reading this story will understand the value of friendships and that every friend is unique and different in their own way, which is a wonderful thing.

Teamwork is Essential: During the quest, Tiki and his friends face many obstacles as they try to get closer to King Lauia to retrieve the stolen Toku mask. They have to learn how to work together to overcome difficult situations where they have to rely on each other’s unique gifts, strengths, and talents to help them advance through a difficult situation. Without teamwork, Tiki and his friends will never advance in their quest. Kids that are reading the book will see how Tiki and his friends work together and see the value of teamwork. This will encourage them to work together with friends and classmates.

RRR presents... The Start of the Story by Jane Lovering - REVIEW!

Rachel's Random Resources is back again today as we play host to another tour... this time featuring the work of Jane Lovering. Our featured title is a work of Contemporary Fiction with a dash of romance, and a whole lot of heart. Ladies and gents, here comes your next TBR candidate...

The Start of the Story
by
Jane Lovering
Boldwood Books

About the book...

Rowan Thorpe can be forgiven for living with one foot in the past.

Since having to say goodbye far too young to the future she had planned, moving on still feels a daunting task. So, when historian Connor O’Keefe strides purposefully into her office and life, looking far too handsome for his own good and threatening to undermine the local legends she holds close to her heart, she is more than a little unsettled.

Connor has a past too, and his own reasons to keep his heart under wraps. But when a combination of fate and an unexpected snowstorm mean that Rowan and Connor have all the time in the world to swap stories, it may finally be time for an end and a new beginning.

~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~

A little bit forced proximity, and a wee tad second chance at love, the trope combination in this story sets us up for both tender moments, and the potential for a happily-ever-after... even if both parties don't quite believe in them anymore. How come? The simple answer is LIFE.  They've both had moments worth remembering, and those they'd much rather forget. In the latter case, the causes were out of their control; fate, and the choices of others, are certainly not things we're ever in the driver's seat of; in the case of the former, there's always room to build more to add to not replace. But I digress...

Though the tale does have a romance element, it's also about community, beliefs, and just how far some will go to make sure a memory sticks.  Rowan is a student of life's stories, whereas Connor relies on traceable facts. Together, they're about to uncover something they never knew they were searching for, both personally and professionally, and yet the impact it has in both arenas will touch your heart. You'll get caught up in both their stories, back, current, and future, while finding yourself hoping against hope that the potential you see for them will come true. A great addition to your TBR, and a wonderful way to feed your need to read as well as warm your bookish heart.

~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~

RRR presents... The Tanglewood Bookshop by Lilac Mills - REVIEW!

It's beginning to look a lot like CHRISTMAS READING...even if it is still 90+ degrees outside, raining, and pumpkin spice is in the air.  😉  Hey, you can't help what you come across and when you come across it, but if you're a Contemporary Romance fan looking for a little holiday affair, this might be a well times gift indeed!  Ladies and gents, please welcome Rachel's Random Resources as we present our stop on today's tour featuring...

The Tanglewood Bookshop
by
Lilac Mills

About the book...
A fun, festive cosy romance
A rural book shop. A chance to start over. But can she make her dream a reality?

Kazz used to love the excitement of her London life, but lately her passion for expensive city living has begun to wane. So when she's given the opportunity to open a bookshop in picturesque Tanglewood, she jumps at the chance.

But village life is much quieter than she anticipated – is she actually suited for rural living? Resigned to a boring and uneventful Christmas, when she meets gorgeous Saul she is more than ready to have some fun and enjoy the festivities. If only Saul didn't have a reputation for being a player...

Will Kazz become the heroine in her own Christmas romance, or will he love her and leave her under the mistletoe?

This gorgeous festive romance is perfect for fans of Kiley Dunbar, Rachel Lucas and Sue Moorcroft.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once upon a time, she had it all...and then, she lost it, through no fault of her own.  Kazz has the proverbial twist at the start of her "fairy tale" putting her without a job, a home, or a place to land.  She winds up in Tanglewood, rediscovering old dreams long forgotten, and getting to know a particular gentleman with a bit of a reputation, or at least as big of one as a small town can have.  The thing is, she's having a bit of trouble remembering the warnings sounded when she's with him, and the town is really working it's charm on her frayed nerves...until (like all fairy tale type stories) another upset that seems heck bent on turning her potentially happily-ever-after moment into just another broken dream.  Has Kazz really found her heart right here in Tanglewood...or have her feelings simply got caught up in the notion of reaching that bright shiny ending?  Guess you'll have to read it to find out for certain, but I will say this...a lack of communication can go a long way in discombobulating a situation.  If only we'd learn to not shy away from what we need to say before it's too late... (*hint hint*)
I loved Kazz and could easily see her being a friend especially with her love of books, and family.  Saul, even with his reputation, was another soul I saw as GOOD.  I mean, I heard the warnings too, but something rang true here, something felt right.  Betty was a hoot, and knows all somehow or another...if you don't believe me, you will by book's end!  Oh, and watch out for Donald; he's way more wiley than his name implies.  But I digress, it was lovely to escape to Tanglewood, but even more lovely to see our leading lady find herself while she was there.  I was almost heartbroken when things looked grim, but I held on, kept reading, and was absolutely delighted to see where the author led us (and I loved the final twists!).  A great read if you need a little Christmas right now, or something to add to your TBR for later this year!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

About the author...

Lilac Mills lives on a Welsh hillside with her very patient husband and incredibly sweet dog, where she grows veggies (if the slugs don't get them), bakes (badly) and loves making things out of glitter and glue (a mess, usually).

She's been an avid reader ever since she got her hands on a copy of Noddy Goes to Toytown when she was five, and she once tried to read everything in her local library starting with A and working her way through the alphabet.

She loves long hot summer days in the garden, and cold winter ones snuggled in front of the fire, but whatever the weather she's usually writing, or thinking about writing, with heartwarming romance and happy-ever-afters always on her mind.

Oh my goodness! Gus is just the sweetest, cutest, most precious little pupper boy that ever was! Oh, wait...I failed to mention the whole point of this story... his renowned patience (*cough cough - giggle # snort *) 😉.

Okay, so maybe Gus isn't as patient as he would have you believe, or maybe it's just him learning his limits, but he means well! He tries to wait his little heart out, and when that fails, and he inevitably gets into a wee bit of trouble (umm, yeah...the bag of cookies he's been asked to wait for might not exactly survive...), his bestie human friend works with him to find other ways to reach his good boy goals. One word...DISTRACTION. 😁

 Think about it? What's the best way to wait for something you have no other option but to wait for? Find another place to put your attention. It's a great lesson for little ones to meet face to face early on, and a clever reminder for those a bit more advanced in years, while at the same time, it provides us with a charming little fella to make friends with. A great story with a valuable lesson and wonderful illustrations that will appeal to readers of all ages, and a undeniably fabulous addition to any school or family library.

CHANGE: Growing Up is Hard to Do (DOUBLE REVIEW!)

Welcome back readers!
Today's post is all about change.  Growing up is hard to do, and finding yourself in the mix can be difficult.  Sometimes what we find is amazing.  Sometimes what we find is confusing.  Sometimes what we learn about ourselves, and those around us, makes it that much more of a maze to traverse, but, if we're lucky, we have those around us that understand, and help us see the beauty in what we might've missed, and the strength in truth behind the hard decisions we might have to make.  Sound a bit heavy for Middle Grade Fiction?  Hey, LIFE is heavy, so why shouldn't that be reflected at times in literature?  Ladies and gents, let's take a closer look at two titles in this category, one that's out now, and one coming soon, that should be on your radar...

I admit, this was a beautiful story in reflection, but during the read, I was a tad confused.  I was having a difficult time trying to sort out whether it was more reality based or fantasy based, and in the end I decided it was a little of both.  It's about the changes we all go through as we grow up.  It's about finding our true selves, accepting our true selves, and finding those that will do that for us as well.  It's about never shying away from our truth, and learning to let the opinions of others bounce off our outer shell because the one that truly matters is our own.  We'll find our crowd, eventually.  We'll form our inner circle, eventually.  We'll discover that the naysayers and the outspoken that were against us were really just lost on their own journeys and lashing out to try and feel comfortable in their own skin. Is it right?  No...but it doesn't make it any less a valid part of the experience.

I felt for Greta and I think those things she struggles with resonate with younger readers, serving as a reminder that they aren't the only ones trying to figure things out.  Change is a constant in life, but finding that comfort zone comes with time, promise, and the moments that got you there will be flashcard memories that created the you that is you today.

The Web of the Spider series, Book 1

Margaret K. McElderry Books
Release Date:  09/24/24

I love my Historical Fiction and this was a great way for younger readers interested in the genre to get their feet on the ground during this transformative time.  Was it hard to read?  In some ways, yes...I did think that unless the person going into it has an innate interest, it might be dry in some places, but the other half of the reading difficulty lies purely in the subject matter as it gives us a glimpse of how evil can rise, spread, and transform a people.  Hitler came at a time when Germany was down and out with messages of gathering their strength once again, but he also came with vile ideas of who should be allowed not only to reign, but to LIVE, and a whole assortment of other ugliness I won't get into here.

Rolf was a great character to see through because he was trying to take it all in, reason it out, and assemble just where he stood in it all.  His brother was taking one road, his father another, and his best friend another still, but he allowed himself to see the facts for the fiction, and discover his own path like we all have to at some point or another in our lives.  Most of our decisions will seem small in scale when compared to those the surround this time period, but, as the author points out, it's those small decisions along the way, the seemingly innocent side steps, and placements, that add up to a bigger picture in the end.  The moment we turn away from an injustice we could have prevented, an innocent that needed assistance we refused to give, that darker side of mankind gains another foothold in our world...and that's a place none of us truly want to live.  A great start to a promising series that will help the next generation to learn from the past and never forget.
