About the book...
Melissa Ginsburg's The House Uptown is an emotional coming-of-age novel about a young girl who goes to live with her eccentric grandmother in New Orleans after the death of her mother

Ava, fourteen years old and totally on her own, has still not fully processed her mother’s death when she finds herself on a train heading to New Orleans, to stay with Lane, the grandmother she barely remembers.

Lane is a well-known artist in the New Orleans art scene. She spends most of her days in a pot-smoke haze, sipping iced coffee, and painting, which has been her singular focus for years. Her grip on reality is shaky at best, but her work provides a comfort.

Ava’s arrival unsettles Lane. The girl bears an uncanny resemblance to her daughter, whom she was estranged from before her death. Now her presence is dredging up painful and disturbing memories, which forces Lane to retreat even further into her own mind. As Ava and Lane attempt to find their way and form a bond, the oppressive heat and history of New Orleans bears down on them, forcing a reckoning neither of them are ready for.

~~~   EXCERPT   ~~~
Ava’s cab parked in front of a wooden house, painted green. She paid and carried her bags to the front porch. The windows were leaded glass, wavy and old, distorting the reflection of the trees and telephone wires. Ava knocked.
After a minute a man opened the door. He was young, late twenties. “Yes?” he said abruptly, irritation in his voice. He held a drink in his hand. Beyond him in the fading light were high ceilings, crown molding, Oriental rugs.
“Hi,” Ava said. “Is this where Lane lives?”
“Who are you?” he said.
“I’m Ava. I’m her granddaughter.”
“Bullshit,” he said. “What’s this about?”
“Is she here?” Ava said.
“You got ID or something?”
She shook her head. “I’m only fourteen.” Kaitlyn’s warnings about strange men echoed through her head. “Who are you?” she added.
“Wait here,” the man said.
He closed the door, leaving Ava on the porch. After a minute he came back and opened it again. “You better come in, I guess,” he said.
She lugged her case over the threshold. A woman stood in the middle of the room—graying hair pulled back in a ponytail, a paint-stained dress. She looked old enough to be a grand-mother, but unlike any grandmother Ava knew. The woman stared openly at Ava.
“Louise,” the woman said.
“No,” Ava said. “I’m Ava. Are you Lane?”
“Lane, what the hell is going on?” the man said.
“God, you look like your mother,” the woman said.
“Really?” Louise had been beautiful, and Ava thought herself plain, awkward.
“Okay, god,” the man said. “Let’s go sit down. I’m Oliver, by the way. I could use another drink.”
Ava followed them through a living room, dining room, and a dark hall to a kitchen at the back. Lane sat down at a wooden table. On it lay a spiral sketchbook, an empty glass, an ashtray and small wooden pipe.
“What’ll it be?” he said to Ava. “Diet Coke, water?”
“Water, please.”
Lane spoke. “I haven’t seen you in ten, eleven years.”
“I don’t remember it,” Ava said. “I was too little, I guess.”
“Yes,” Lane said. “You’ve grown.”
It was nearly dark out, the kitchen in shadows. Oliver switched on the light. He poured Ava a glass from the tap and fixed drinks for Lane and himself, brought everything to the table.
“Louise is dead,” the woman said. She was speaking as though she had forgotten and suddenly remembered a piece of trivia.
“Yes,” Ava said.
“That your mom?” Oliver asked.
Ava nodded.
“Shit,” he said.
He studied Lane’s face, saw a quietness overtake her, like a scrim behind her eyes. He recognized that expression—she shut down sometimes, shut people out. She wasn’t going to say much else.
“You eat?” he said to Ava.
“No,” she said.
“Alright, I’ll go pick something up. Give y’all some time.”
Oliver left them, drove to the Rouses, and ordered red beans and rice, macaroni and cheese, and fried chicken at the deli counter. He picked up a tray of pecan bars and stood in line. Lane hadn’t told him about this visit. Hell, he didn’t even know she had a granddaughter. Things slipped Lane’s mind more and more frequently, but mostly they were of little consequence. Something this big—the daughter died and she hadn’t told him? When had this visit been arranged? He paid for the food and drove back slowly through the neighborhood, taking the long route to avoid the worst pot-holes. He had a bad feeling about all of this, but he would do what he always did—clean up the mess. He would take care of Lane, whatever she needed.
Time to meet... MILO THE ALBINO DINO by Dolev Zaharony - REVIEW!
HI there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers!
Today, we're serving up a second helping of bookish fun from an author whose work we featured once upon a November.  Now he's back with another Storybook for the kiddos filled with characters they'll love, illustrations that will keep them captivated, and a message of owning their uniqueness that goes straight to your heart.  Ladies and gents, kiddos of all ages, let's get ready for a little prehistoric fun as we set our sights on today's ebook of choice...
Milo the Albino Dino
by
Dolev Zaharony
Illustrated by
Marian Naseif
About the book...
Milo is having a tough time at school. The other kids won’t play with him because he’s an Albino. The longer this goes on, the sadder and lonelier he feels.
When he tells his mom what’s going on at school, she suggests he find a new friend like him. Soon, Milo is on an adventure of a lifetime searching for another Albino dinosaur. After learning about his journey, a few friends join him and discover what genuine friendship, kindness, and acceptance means.
Milo the Albino teaches young children about awareness and acceptance. This book teaches children how a first impression doesn’t represent who a person is on the inside and how to form friendships without bias.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A great piece of edutainment, if ever I saw one!
Not only do we learn about albinism in our natural world, but from a narrator that has been there, done that...and had to dealt with the consequences of having this rare genetic disorder.  Does having bad eyesight make him a bad dino?  Does needing to apply sunscreen more often keep him from enjoying the great outdoors?  Does the fact that the other kiddo dino's don't seem to understand or accept him keep him down?  Okay, so that's a resounding yes to the last one, but the coolest part of the story, outside of the edutainment scientific value, is how dear old mom helps him see he's going about the friendship thing completely the wrong way!  I mean, looking for someone like him is the perfect answer...isn't it?  Oh mommy dino, you are wise beyond your years, and one day Milo will thank you for helping him see beyond his struggles, and that acceptance from others can only come after we accept ourselves.

A wonderful tribute to the uniqueness in us all, and a great story filled with wonderful illustrations that will help kiddos grow up with open minds AND hearts.

A Tech Marketer by day and writer and musician by night, Dolev has written many short stories. After his first child was born, he started focusing on children's books, as he gets regular inspiration from his kids. Their imagination takes him back to when he was a kid, connecting between unrelated things and blending them into a story. As a parent, he tries to use that same method and reply it back to kids, each time with a different message that will help them overcome the obstacles of life they have to cope with.

Dolev resides in North Carolina and has a wife and two kids.

About the book...
It was a lifetime ago that recently widowed Maggie Flynn was in Wyndham Beach. Now, on the occasion of her fortieth high school reunion, she returns to her hometown on the Massachusetts coast, picking up right where she left off with dear friends Lydia and Emma. But seeing Brett Crawford again stirs other emotions. Once, they were the town’s golden couple destined for one another. He shared Maggie’s dreams—and eventually, a shattering secret that drove them apart.

Buying her old family home and resettling in Wyndham Beach means a chance to start over for Maggie and her two daughters, but it also means facing her rekindled feelings for her first love and finally confronting—and embracing—the past in ways she never thought possible. Maggie won’t be alone. With her family and friends around her, she can weather this stormy turning point in her life and open her heart to the future. As for that dream shared and lost years ago? If Maggie can forgive herself, it still might come true.

🌞   🏄   🌞   🧨   🌞   🧨   🌞   🏄   🌞

OH my.
This book was simply GORGEOUS!  It took its time and meandered through a lifetime of memories and choices, circling back to the things that are truly important...like family.  It didn't have a driving plot that demanded to be chased, but I was MORE than happy to let things unfold naturally.  Each of the character's we're introduced to leave a mark on your heart.  The love that was both lost and found is enough to turn the biggest skeptic on to the idea of everything happening for a reason, and in its own time.

Maggie, Emma, and Lindy have been friends since their teen years, and now as they fully embody their late fifties, they are closer than ever.  Time is a dance we all must entertain, but how we accept it, kicking and screaming all the way or with grace, understanding, and an open heart, is entirely up to us.  I do believe these ladies did a little of both in their day, but they are so much stronger than any of them imagine.  How could they be anything but with everything they've faced?  Maggie's secret from yesteryear, her husband's passing, and her daughter's lives uprooted in various ways.  I gotta say I LOVED her character, but I adored how she handled Grace's public situation.  It was simply perfect, right down to the tiny white lie she freely stated.  Emma lost her husband, and her son, though neither in the same way, and some with more permanence.  She still managed to pull her friends up when they were down, and help Liddy find the grace of the circumstances with Jessica.  Also, she raised a rather fine son (in several ways!), who is most definitely a product of her motherly tutelage.  Liddy lost a daughter, a husband, and a bit of her self...but with her true friends by her side she was never truly alone.  I was so happy to see her heart breaking loose of some of the sadness, and I truly believe her new business project is going to make a big difference in keeping her from falling back on despair.

All in all, it was a wonderful cast of characters with varied lives that are intriguing, heartbreaking, and uplifting in equal parts.  It just goes to show that whether we find, make, or are born into "our tribe", those connections we forge, those bonds we make can follow us throughout our days, if only we let them...if only we believe in those waves of the same sea.

About the book...
Join Itty Bitty Betty in this thrilling story as she tries to sneak a tasty treat without Mommy knowing!

Itty Bitty Betty was small as can be,
About as tall as her mom’s knee.
After a fun day out by the sea,
Itty Bitty wanted cookies for tea!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With wonderful full-color illustrations throughout, Itty Bitty Betty certainly makes a scrumptious impression! Her adventure began with a day out of doors, and led to her precariously stretching and reaching to get the coveted cookies she is craving after all that sunshine! Can she reach the tempting treat? Or will an unfortunate spill have her reconsidering the need to do this particular thing all by her self?
I love how independent Betty is. She definitely reflects the “though she be but little, she is fierce” attitude that we try to instill in our little ones today, but with genuine heart. She simply wants the cookies she can see, and doesn't want to bother her mom to get them. Her little brown kitty (who is adorable, by the way!) tries to help in her own way, but alas, she's not truly any taller than our wee star. I think the story speaks to the desire that kiddos have to do things by themselves, while gently reminding them why adults feel the need to “interfere” in the first place. It allows them the chance to see what they can do, but also the potential consequences that could follow, which are certainly not the easier more loving option of simply asking one's mom for assistance.
In the end, I think little ones will enjoy Betty's tries, and root for her to overcome the challenges, yet be more than happy when dear old mom sweeps in to save the day.  It teaches early lessons on perseverance, but also that there is just as much might in asking for help when help is needed.
When she's offered an opportunity to get out of town and work on a project involving the photographer that launched her career, it seems like the perfect escape! Unfortunately for Brandi, her famous face makes hiding out even a huge city like Houston a little tricky.
When the celebrated photographer's son offers to let her use his home for privacy, it seems like everything is falling into place. Little does she know that Michael Ames a gorgeous best selling author, and he comes with the package! ~~~ GUEST POST ~~~
Giving Characters Character
By Michelle L.E. Price
One of the most entertaining parts of writing fiction is being able to invent new people out of thin air… As the author, I get to choose every single detail about them, from their hair color to their occupation to their family and upbringing. I’m mindful of having characters of different races, sexual orientations, having some that are parents, some who are single, young and old… My goal is always for the characters in my books to be as rich and varied as the world that we actually live in.
Since I write contemporary fiction, I also always want the people in my stories to feel sort of familiar to the reader. Of course, the characters may have occupations that are not quite main stream (like Meghan, the narrator for a hit television show in Hidden in the Writer’s Room, or Michael, a best-selling author in Photographed in the Writer’s Room), but I still want them to feel real to the reader.
In order to do that, I’ve developed a practice of creating “character boards.” All that really means is that for every character that I create, I make a sort of visual collage on poster board. It might have a dozen photographs of what the character looks like in my mind, pictures of what they might wear, the car they drive, things that they might travel with, the kind of home they might have… anything that helps me form a more complete picture of them in my mind. The goal of these character boards is to develop a complete backstory so that when I’m describing him or her, I am able to be consistent and specific. For my main characters, I may go even so far as to determine their Meyers Briggs personality type or their Enneagram number. It helps ensure that their reactions feel honest to the reader and in keeping with the character of the person they’ve come to understand.
After that, the real fun as a writer begins! The best part of creating new characters is, without question, giving myself license to invent the small bits of their personality that will not only humanize them and make them relatable, but also make them memorable. The best way that I’ve found to do that is by adding quirks. I call it developing my character’s character.
Are they independent professionals who still text their mom every night before bed? Do they love sushi but hate seafood? Do they seem really driven and utterly serious, but secretly dress their dog in ridiculous outfits? Do they follow bloggers online, have a tattoo, or read insatiably? Do they forget to charge their phones or lose their keys? Does their immaculate apartment secretly have a closet full of halfway done projects and useless junk?
I’ll admit that not all of the details from my character boards or the quirks I want to give my characters will make it into the final draft of my books. They might be too obscure, too frivolous, or too tangential. But, I’ve found that the exercise of creating them, of fully knowing the people (oops, I mean, the characters!) I’ve created helps me to tell a more complete story. One of the greatest compliments I’ve ever gotten was on Instagram when a reader said that she wished that she could be friends with my characters in real life.
Me, too.
About the author…
Born in Montreal but raised in New England, author Michelle L. E. Price has been writing as long as anyone can remember. An avid reader who was on the verge of losing her mind as a mom to two small children, Michelle began writing her first book, Hidden in the Writer’s Room, as an escape… at least her characters would do exactly what she told them to do and she could always count on a happily ever after ending. She also enjoys wine, re-watching 90’s sitcoms and occasionally running, but heavily relies on writing to stay sane. About the book...
Twelve-year-old Ankido is on a quest to save his missing father through the magical realm of Mesopo.
Mesopo is the land where all fantasy originates, a land whose words and language are in peril. Can Ankido save his father and restore all these words in time?
It was a red velvet box, the size of a school book. Ankido lifted the lid, revealing an old-fashioned quill made out of a reed. It smelled remote and otherworldly. Ancient. And for a reason he couldn’t explain, everything felt all right for a moment.
He thought he caught a sound flowing out of the quill, a word maybe. He wasn’t sure and he shook his head. This was ridiculous. No, he surely must have been mistaken. But there! There was the sound again. This time Ankido was sure of it.
“Mesopo” … whispered in a way that slipped around the room like the warm breeze of the desert.
AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Eva Dietrich
The land of Mesopo sounds rather unusual and unique but also dangerous! How did the idea come to you?
The land of Mesopo is loosely based on ancient Mesopotamia which seemed to me like the perfect scenario for a book like this. Mesopotamia is not only the cradle of our civilisation but also the very place where the written word originated. Scholars generally agree that the earliest form of writing appeared almost 5,500 years ago in Mesopotamia. So what better place than this to set up a story about a boy who is in love with words?
In the image here, you can see what the first writing looked like. It’s called cuneiform and it was written on clay tablets.
And for what it’s worth, the first schools were also started in ancient Mesopotamia. Though that might not have been such a good idea after all…as my kids like reminding me every morning:)
As far as danger goes, I believe the real danger lies in losing the culture of the written word,  both in the book and in our own increasingly technological society. Fantasy and the written word are paramount to who we are and it is our duty to cherish them and keep them alive.
Ankido sounds like a stand-up young man.  What inspired you to right write his story of all the inhabitants of Mesopo?
In the Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh, the first work of literature ever written, the protagonist, Gilgamesh, has a friend named Enkidu which inspired me to create the character of Ankido.
Enkidu is made of clay and very close to nature and animals. He is a bit wild himself, just like Ankido sometimes. Enkidu also possesses incredible strength and so does Ankido. And both are much more than just human.
Besides, I thought Enkidu, like his friend Gilgamesh, deserved a book where he was the protagonist…didn’t want him to be jealous of his best friend:)
Of the characters in Mesopo, whom do you identify with the most?
I am not quite sure if I do identify with any of the characters of the book but if I were to choose one,  I think I’d quite like to be Scribe Mohan. It sounds exciting and fun to be a guardian of words. And he is a very wise man too.
Reading is a very personal experience, so the full adventure is different for everyone.  If you could have readers walk away with one message above all else, what would it be?
I believe, I have unintentionally answered this question above but I am happy to say this again: Fantasy and books are vital to human kind and we need to do everything possible to cherish them. They make us see the world through the eyes of many different people, thus increasing our perspective and understanding of ourselves and the world we live in.
Time for a fun little get to know you better Q&A!  I say FAVORITE, you say yours!  Ready?  Set?  Favorite....
…word? serendipity
…color? Rainbow. In the German language there is a word which comprises all colours: bunt. It does not exist as such in the English language and it is usually not quite accurately translated as colourful. For lack of a better translation, I’d say my favourite colour is ‘rainbow’.
…time of year? spring
…book? Momo
…author? Michael Ende
...reading (or writing) spot?  Everywhere and anywhere. When I get lucky, I  get to read and write in a little, cozy  corner, next a big window with lots of light and sunshine coming through .But other times I write and read in my car, in a coffee shop, on the train…and once I am immersed in the written world, I completely forget about my surroundings.
Any sage words of advice for aspiring writers in our reading audience?
Be stubborn.   It takes a lot of stubbornness to keep writing and it takes  a lot of stubbornness to reach the finishing line and complete a book. So don’t let anyone tell you not to be stubborn!
