What started as the worst day of a young pup's life, turned into a day that could be looked back upon fondly because that's the day his life truly began.  You see, Nick's owner couldn't care for him, and made a tough decision.  What happened next was part luck, part destiny, and all heart.  Thanks to the kindness of a few firemen, and the friendliness of the young pup, his life went from unknown destination to inspiration.  He would go on to know love in new ways, share love with those around him, and pass on safety messages that kiddos could easily relate to because he was just that brilliant...and his adorableness didn't hurt his chances of the lessons sticking in the least.

I admit, I definitely had the glimmer of tears in my eyes when I reached Nick's moment of reflection.  Aside from the fire safety messages already imparted, it was a lovely way to remind readers that it's truly all in how you look at it.  The best or worst situation could be one in the same depending on the eyes and HEART through which it was viewed.  All the better to approach all things, people, and situations with kindness.  It costs us nothing and yet goes so very far.

A charming tale for readers of all ages with colorful images that will inspire and delight.

About the author...

Timothy Dexter, Jr. is a 20 year veteran of the Fire Service. The author currently holds the rank of Assistant Fire Chief of the City of Newburgh, NY Fire Department where the real Nick the Firedog lives. This is the first book he has written which tells the true story of how an abandoned puppy got a new lease on life as a firehouse mascot.

Our adventure with Autumn begins with a wayward iguana, as all good adventures must.  He's unintentionally injured, which gets us our introduction to the new kid in town, and lands us squarely in school just before the bell, contemplating our luck and the new school year.  After all, it's not everyday you start sixth grade, and it's not every year you're eligible to apply to be the anonymous voice behind the "Dear Student" advice section in the school paper...not that Autumn would ACTUALLY apply or anything.  I mean, she's thought about it, and her little sister (that goes by Pickle) has granted her a big sister cape so she can find her inner Fearless Fred, but she'd never actually do it.  Or would she?  

I mean, what's the big deal?  Her wayward dad is off to find himself in the arms of the Peace Corps, leaving her wondering why they weren't enough.  Her new friends couldn't be more different from one another, leaving her feeling like the egg salad in the middle of a PB&J.  Her own anxiety is cranked up several notches alone simply from all the stress she's already dealing with, including her best friend having moved out of town and now being a phone call or text away; it's not the same.  No, she doesn't need the added worries, or deadlines...but what if?  What if this could be her ONE THING this year?  The thing that she does for herself because she wants to, enjoys it even, and in this case...she wouldn't even have to worry about all eyes being on her because it's anonymous...WHAT IF indeed!

Needless to say, she applies, and gets the role, otherwise what in the world would the story have been about, but that's where we veer off into the land of lessons running right alongside the story.  We learn that when giving advice, it's not the right or wrong of it for the person receiving it, but that it came from the heart.  If we don't believe in it, how can they possibly even consider it?  We come to understand that sometimes the right thing and the easy thing are completely at odds with one another, and it doesn't make you a bad person or bad friend when you choose to be true to your self.  Those moments are the ones that simply help us sort out who our true friends really are....those that accept us for who WE are and our beliefs, regardless again of their agreement with them.  We see how one person CAN help change the world, but it takes a voice that won't be silenced, and back up is never a bad thing!  I loved how the author let Autumn stumble, but not fall, experience growth while helping others to grow, and showed us the power that exists in truly finding yourself.  

The story's conclusion isn't all sunshine and roses, but it is clarity with a healthy dose of reality, and that can have a far bigger impact for readers in this category than making everything right as rain.  I think this title will find a home with quiet youngsters as well as those that already speak their mind, as there is truly something to be gleaned from it for everyone.

This story was absolutely darling!

Any bookish gal readers out there will easily see themselves in the smart shoes of this lovable leading lady as she strives to straighten out the mess her elder sister left behind in order for her younger sister to have a chance at a better future.  It matters not what position it puts her in because she is selfless like that, although she doesn't truthfully view herself as such.  She simply believes she is doing what any caring sibling would do for the others without regard for herself.  The thing is, it's often when we're NOT looking for something that it sneaks right up on us, and while she nor he wishes to be wed for traditional reasons, her ill-stated-but-smart plan fits them both rather perfectly.  The rule making session was to die for as they exchange witty banter, and wild ideas providing a few blush worthy moments, and lots of promising encounters to come...though I don't mean that exactly the way it sounds.  *ahem*

One of my favorite scenes revolves around the Duke's realization that she simply wants him...for his library!  (*uncontrollable laughter*)  Seriously though, her end game DOES in fact include access to a personal library, but it doesn't make the scene any less amusing or warmth inducing.  If you're anything like me, you'll fall for both characters straight from the start.  You'll wish with all your heart that they would simply TALK to one another at times instead of assuming they know how the other is feeling, or broaching the subject of rule bending, nay BREAKING.  For goodness sake, the miles that could have been saved by a few simple words and a dose of courage...but I digress.  That particular failure to present their true heart lead to another rather touching moment involving books, a note, and a rather specific piece of artwork.  *sigh*

All in all, a wonderful read that Historical Romance fans won't be able to keep their hands off of!

This is a story about a young girl discovering her voice, her heritage, and her true self.  Harriet has been dealt a bad hand, and it seems like the very end of her world.  A happy event, the coming of a new baby brother or sister, is turned sour when mom is ordered on bed rest and dad still had to manage life in general.  Where does that leave a slightly precocious little girl and her darling cat?  Headed for a trip to Marble Island to stay with her nanu.  Normally the trip would be welcome...but not when it wasn't her decision.  So, while she's away, she's looking to exert a little control over the things she can touch...such as whether or not she helps around the B&B, picking out a project that's to her liking (such as cleaning out the shed in the hopes of uncovering treasure), and generally making her choices known among those that surround her.  The thing is...she's not really fooling anyone.  They give her some space, and allowances, but they know at heart, she's hurting...and time as well as distance from the situation that seems to be the cause can in fact help one to heal, or at least find the path of least resistance for themselves.  

I loved Harriet's character, and trust me, there is nothing "just" about her.  She is her own person, as small as spunky as a young girl can be, but so bright, with so much heart it hurts.  Seeing her struggle with the separation, the way she acts out even when she doesn't really know why she is, hurt my heart, but it was healed with every smile she spared, every mystery she unlocked, and every new understanding she came to.  In the end, it wasn't just a story about her family changing now, but about how much they each had changed along the way, and how much like her dad she really was.  It's a tale that doesn't spare the heart, but makes it feel whole again.

This is a story that I had a hard time getting...in more ways than one...BUTT once I ruminated a little more, and found the heart through the humor, I CRACKed a smile.  I must apologize in advance because yes, there will be behind jokes in this review, BUTT how can I resist?

The young boy with the overactive behind never has a name, but I think that just makes it easier for wee ones to step right into the role of main character.  The words on the page tell of his overactive derrière as he makes his way through life.  School is that much more MUSICAL.  Home is that much more BUTT-iful.  A rainy day in the park is just that much more a-BUTT-andantly splishy and splashy.  The main gist...he's a ram-BUTT-tious young man that can't quite remain still when the situation calls for it.  It's something seen often with kids...and admit it, adults too...because sometimes we just feel that need to move, groove, and make our presence known.  It's a curious way to get the point across to the younger generation, BUTT...if it works, it works!  What IS that message?  Well, the one I took from it was that while you should always be you, silly BUTT or not, there are some times, some places where decorum and manners must rule...and then when those have PASSED, they'll still be plenty of time and ways to let your true color fly!

(Gill is mid-date with charming Charlie and it’s going really well.)

They had another couple of drinks. Charlie had switched to orange juice after his first few lager shandies. Gill gave him another tick for this – sensible, not going over the limit, especially when he’d be spending time with his daughter later.

When pressed, Charlie told Gill all about his passion for cooking and how he often prepared dishes from the places around the world that he had visited. She almost expected him to suggest he cook for her one night, but no invitation was forthcoming. Fair enough. They had just met. She told him how big a foodie she was, and of the restaurants she had frequented in Glasgow, Edinburgh and the west of Scotland in general. He keyed some of her recommendations into his phone.

There was a brief pause in the conversation and then Charlie said, ‘Oh God, I’m going to be late. Gill, I’m so sorry. I’ve had a really nice time, but I’ve got to go. Chloe will be waiting.’

He pulled on a leather jacket, which had been hanging over his chair. It was the first time Gill had noticed it: brown, distressed leather. She couldn’t help thinking of Tom Cruise in Top Gun, although Charlie was blond and a good six inches taller.

Gill stood up and donned her trench coat, belting it loosely at the waist. He walked slightly ahead of her and held the door open to let her pass through.

The rain bounced off the street. They hesitated briefly inside the entranceway.

‘My car’s just around the corner. How did you get here?’ he asked.

‘I took a taxi. Ah, there’s one now,’ she said, flagging it down.

‘It was really nice to meet you, Gill. I enjoyed our chat,’ Charlie said then kissed her briefly on both cheeks.

‘You too.’

He smiled at her and then walked towards his car.

What? What! He hadn’t mentioned seeing her again and when he had kissed her cheek, he had smelled divine, but he hadn’t tried to kiss her properly. What am I, his maiden aunt? Deflated, she turned at the sound of the taxi horn beeping, reminding her of its presence.

Gill sat in the taxi, puzzling over what had just happened. Why didn’t he ask to see me again or for my number? We were having a really good time.

Rafe has come to this quaint little town not by choice but by necessity.  It seems some distant relative he didn't know has passed away, and lacking an immediate heir, he was the next in the bloodline to inherit his "legacy".  Lands, a mansion, a title, and a sizeable bank account are well and truly appreciated by Rafe because he has plans for his future, and this will enable that to become a reality...BUT I put "legacy" in quotation marks for a reason.  You see, his predecessor was a less than liked landowner, and an even more negligent landlord.  He loved to reap the wealth of what he "sowed", but not to lift a finger in assistance, or a hand to those in need, even if they were truly his charges.  Certainly not unheard of in these times, but definitely a fly in the ointment.  Why?  Well, as it stands, Rafe's future plans may not just be for himself, making him seem to have a heart...and yet, he's never wanted a title either, so he planned to sell out and run toward that dream.  Enter fly number two in the ointment...who goes by the name of Sophie.

The townspeople may not have liked the man they paid rent to, but they liked their livelihood, the ability to provide for themselves, and have a roof over their heads, so they were entirely suspicious of the new earl from the word go.  With a little nudge in the right direction, away from mere gossip and towards action to stake their claims, they are pulling together to face off against him...and their elected leader is Sophie.  Nary a bad word to be said about her in town, but she has a way with people, a way with words, and a past she'd rather not discuss.  Her aunt is the only relation she claims, and she's ever grateful for the townspeople who welcomed her in when she was lost.  So naturally, she'd do anything for them...and if it takes squaring off against the overly handsome, secretly kind hearted earl, than that's just what she'll do.  

Sound like the makings of a good old fashioned showdown?  Ah, but that's just the half of it!  It gets even better as you become even more involved in their lives, discovering the truth behind Rafe's dreams, the history Sophie has tried so hard to forget, the lengths to which two hearts that recognize each other's pain will go to in order to stay strong...and yet the ultimate power of love, in its many forms.  I also want to mention that as much as this is Rafe and Sophie's story, the relationships between both of them and the townspeople are just as important, and let us not forget a particularly special young man and how his outright honesty and open heart are a true blessing.  It's another wonderful story from an author whose work I truly enjoy, and I can't wait to check out more stories in the series as they arrive!

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Twenty books and two Romantic Novel of the Year Award nominations later, and it still takes her forever to fall asleep.
