AUDIOBOOK REVIEW starring... Wake the Bones by Elizabeth Kilcoyne

Wake the BonesWake the Bones by Elizabeth Kilcoyne
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I'm newer to audiobooks, but I was building a few bookcases this Halloween, and wanted to listen to something SCARY while I worked. A search on my Libby app for Halloween titles, and this popped up as a suggestion. Sounded interesting, and so my listening journey began...

I can honestly say, I don't generally finish a novel in a sitting. It's not that I don't want to , but I usually get interrupted so many times, it breaks my concentration. Listening to this one though, I was akin to "whistling while you work"; I could get what else I need done, while enjoying the story...and what a story it was! We start in a small town where most youth dream of escape to other parts. The group of friends we tag along with are not different for the most part, and all for various reasons...but that's where the small town mindset stops. Strange things are occurring around the town, and it all seems to have started once our leading lady came back. Coincidence? I think not...and am proven right as things progress...but the who (or what) and why are murky, still needing time to be uncovered before it's too late. Too late for whom? Ah, now that is a tricky question with a slippery answer...but you'll have to read (or listen to) it to find out.

Watch for the AH HA moments throughout the story, and the twists and turns that lead up to a remarkable ending. I admit to thinking I missed something closer to the end, but then THAT was cleared up...even if the results were a bit on the spooky side!

BOOK SPOTLIGHT on...Counterpoint by Michelle Cook

Happy Halloween!  It's the day we celebrate all things candy, costume, and child-like infused, alongside the spooky, creepy, and the actual history behind the holiday.  HOWEVER, that's not what this post is about, so I'll get on with it...you're welcome...but make sure you get/give some good candy!  Today's title in the spotlight is on tour with Rachel's Random Resources, and the story just so happens to take place on OCTOBER 31ST!  Coincidence?  We'll say no for the sake of atmosphere, but let's take a closer look at a book that might be the next addition to your TBR...

Counterpoint
by
Michelle Cook

About the book...
It’s 31st October 2041 in England. On her twenty-fifth birthday, Essie Glass still grieves for her family, killed by a terrorist bomb when she was just sixteen. The signs of humanity and climate in decline are everywhere. Roads and communities crumble, floods and fires blight the landscape, and the sea reclaims the islands of the world. Unconcerned, the government tightens its grip on power with brazen propaganda and brutality.

Still, Essie has built a good life with Seth and their four-year-old daughter, Willow. If only she wasn’t  haunted by the events of six years ago, when Alex Langford, corrupt businessman-turned-Prime Minister, tried to kill her to conceal his conspiracy to suppress climate-saving technology.

Essie takes solace in her secret plot to build a new prototype. When tricked into revealing the scheme to powerful enemies, she is forced to abandon her cherished family and run for her life. Her flight drives her into the heart of a resistance movement she never knew existed.

Among the chaos, and in mortal danger, will Essie finally find hope for the future?

Counterpoint is the hotly awaited sequel to Tipping Point, a gripping story of political environmental conspiracy.

About the author...

Michelle Cook writes thrillers and dystopian fiction. She lives in Worcestershire, UK with her husband and their two young children.

Her first joyful steps into creative writing were at the age of ten, when the teacher read out her short story in class. A slapstick tale of two talking kangaroos breaking out of a zoo, the work was sadly lost to history. Still, Michelle never forgot the buzz of others enjoying her words.

More recently, she has had several flash pieces published, was longlisted for the Cambridge Prize for flash fiction, and placed first in the Writers’ Forum competition with her short story The Truth About Cherry House. Her debut novel, Tipping Point, was a finalist in the 2022 Page Turner Awards.

Counterpoint, the sequel to Tipping Point, is her second novel.

REVIEW starring... Blind Dates by Gordon MacMillan

When you've read an author's work, you get a taste of their writing style, and, if it's a good match, you may even get a whole slew of titles to explore to quench that hunger. Sometimes, it's a new author, and so the hunger pains have to be lived with until a new title hits publication...but when it does, you can bet you'll be RIGHT THERE to scoop up that next work, and devour it cover to cover. Such was the case here, as I had previously read Songs for Your Mother, and rather adored it, and couldn't wait to check this one out once I caught wind of it. Currently on tour with Rachel's Random Resources...

Blind Dates
by
Gordon MacMillan

About the book....

Is true love just a few dates away ... or even closer than you think?

Tom has always been a hopeless romantic: but now he's just hopeless. After lockdown in particular made the millennial a reclusive introvert, it was finally time to get back 'out there' - at least according to his best friends Adam, Allison and sister Sarah.

As the group sets up ten miracle dates to rejuvenate Tom's love life, he soon realises how difficult the dating scene has become, along with juggling his Shakespearean-themed café on the side and a hobby of romantic mixtape making.

As the dates continue to turn into disasters, an old flame keeps reappearing in Tom's sight - along with bittersweet memories. Fearing it may be too little too late, Tom must decide whether he can date his way to happiness, or find his true match was under his nose the whole time.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The story takes place just after the pandemic has released its grasp on everyone, allowing interactions to be held face to face again, and reminding us just how incredible awkward we can be when faced with only ourselves day after day after day. Tom went from slightly extroverted to severely introverted, and having to place yourself in the dating pool isn't going to bring anyone further out of their shells. Good thing he's got friends with his best intentions at heart, and maybe a little desire for him to see beyond his own nose, seize the day, and go for what his heart has always wanted. I mean, love is blind, but the bearer of it is often blinded by their own misconceptions, perceived inadequacies, and other nonsense that simply isn't there, but they can't help but see. The date setup was humorous, but it made my heart smile. The knowledge that perhaps there was someone out there for him that he simply hadn't taken a chance on yet, heartwarming. The fact that the chance he needed to take wasn't so much on the other person, but on himself, was eye opening.
I loved how it tied itself into our daily lives, before and after, while giving us a way to happily-ever-after that was plausible. I enjoyed how the emotional aspects and impact of everything was explored, from the reason for him getting back out there in the first place to why he should consider all his options...no matter how improbably they may seem to his own eyes. I thought the conversations were witty, and full of charm, while the feelings conveyed allowed this one to be enjoyable for both male and female readers...without jokes about their "man card" being pulled. I rather like the author's writing style, and appreciate the way he builds his characters, while taking baby steps forward within the story. The time is taken to let things progress naturally without some sudden earthshaking event throwing everything out of balance.
In short, if you're a Contemporary Fiction fan, this one's for you...and if you didn't check out the first title released, you should definitely take a click on over to discover what you've been missing!
REVIEW starring... A Stolen Knight's Kiss by Melissa Oliver
We're heading back into one of my favorite genres, Historical Romance, but to a different time period. Normally, we visit Regency/Victorian affairs, but this time around, we're in the period of the knights. That's right! Author Melissa Oliver is back with another Medieval Romance that I had to check out and share with all of you, so have your wish list at the ready because you won't want to miss this!
A Stolen Knight's Kiss
by
Melissa Oliver
About the book...
Captured by a knight…
Rescued by his kiss!
When orphan Eva loses the father-figure who’d protected her on the streets of London, she suspects the Knights of Fortitude. But when she steals information from them, she’s caught by brooding knight Nicholas. Learning he might not be the villain after all, she puts her distrust aside to work with him, yet Eva must stay focussed – and not get distracted when they share a stolen kiss!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, this isn't my usual time period of preference, but I'm not ruled by my own preconceived notions of an era, even whilst reading, so if a story interests me, so be it. Such is the case with Ms. Oliver's works. Each one that I've read, thus far, takes us back to a time when travel wasn't near as easy, and instant communication was for pipe dreams only, yet they still had so much in common with us today. They still had worries, challenges, temptations, and ideas about love...not to mention plots against the crown and those that serve it!

Here, we've a young women with a broken heart, willing to do what it takes to exact revenge on the men that stole the one person she could count on. If it's not the exact knight that performed the actions, so be it...so long as it is one of this group. The plan seems easy...all the easier when a nefarious sort offers her the prime target, and all she needs to do is liberate him of the wealth on his person. Simple enough...and yet, not because all sorts of complications crop up when you're not thinking about them, the first, and foremost...an attraction between he and she that can't be denied. Too bad he's the enemy...right? Or is he...because he could have let her fall to her doom, he could have left her to the whims of those she was working for, he could have done any matter of things to her, and yet he seems to be proving most honorable. Is it a trick...or is the real trick her telling herself that's he's too good to be true...

A great trip to an era gone by, yet with all the feels any could muster. It was great getting to know this feisty leading lady, as well as this mostly honorable knight, and the chance to see them together, the chance to watch them let go of the reigns and just BE was too enchanting to pass up! If you've read any of her other works, you won't want to miss this!

Deleted Scene - An Alternate Beginning to The Tiltersmith
by Amy Herrick

As I mentioned in my Blog #3 entitled “Two Truths and a Lie – Can You Guess Which is Which?,” the original draft of my book, The Tiltersmith, was way longer than the final version. I could see it was way too long for its own good. Although there was so much I would have liked to keep, I ended up editing out a great deal of the story. I stowed the deleted bits away for perhaps another time and, today, I’m delighted to have a chance to share this alternate beginning. Hope you enjoy it.

Praise:

"Herrick combines vivid descriptions of climate events, school-set science lessons, and weather-related stories from various cultures around the globe . . . resonates with current events and fits tonally alongside children’s fantasy classics."
Publishers Weekly

“Vacillating between scientific reasoning and lore from worldwide cultures, the descriptions of beautiful legends of seasons and the sobering study of climate change are so rich.”
Kirkus Reviews

"Despite the contemporary setting, a diversified cast, and topical themes, events take on ritualistic elements that readers up on their Greek mythology will recognize. American fans of Susan Cooper’s The Dark Is Rising sequence will find themselves on familiar footing, albeit a bit closer to home."
Booklist

“The author proves to have a keen eye for developing wonderfully dastardly villains. Tiltersmith is a fantastic bad guy who oozes disarming charm while also being deeply unsettling … cleverly handled … a compelling tale.”
Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

“It’s a great combination of the mystical and the scientific! A bit of gentle romance shouldn’t deter younger readers . . . The writing style is craftily literary, with warm incisive forays into each character’s inner life.”
Youth Services Book Review

REVIEW + GIVEAWAY starring... Gleanings by Neal Shusterman

We're heading back into the vivid world author Neal Shusterman created, once upon a time as we host a spot on the Rockstar Book Tours event rocking the blogosphere! It's a trilogy that was memorable, forceful, and action packed, creating a legion of fans that never knew what hit them, and would never forget all they learned, all the experienced, all they felt between those pages.  After finishing the final book, a reader can always go back to the start...but what if there was more?  What if we could dive further into the people, places, and events that shaped the books we loved?  Now THAT would be rather delightful...

GLEANINGS: Stories from the Arc of a Scythe

by Neal Shusterman—along with collaborators David Yoon, Jarrod Shusterman, Sofía Lapuente, Michael H. Payne, Michelle Knowlden, and Joelle Shusterman

RELEASE DATE:  November 8, 2022

Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

Find it: GoodreadsAmazon, Kindle, Audible, B&NiBooks, KoboTBD, Bookshop.org

The New York Times bestselling Arc of the Scythe series continues with thrilling stories that span the timeline. Storylines continue. Origin stories are revealed. And new Scythes emerge!

There are still countless tales of the Scythedom to tell. Centuries passed between the Thunderhead cradling humanity and Scythe Goddard trying to turn it upside down. For years humans lived in a world without hunger, disease, or death with Scythes as the living instruments of population control.

Neal Shusterman—along with collaborators David Yoon, Jarrod Shusterman, Sofía Lapuente, Michael H. Payne, Michelle Knowlden, and Joelle Shusterman—returns to the world throughout the timeline of the Arc of a Scythe series. Discover secrets and histories of characters you’ve followed for three volumes and meet new heroes, new foes, and some figures in between.

Gleanings shows just how expansive, terrifying, and thrilling the world that began with the Printz Honor–winning Scythe truly is.

Haven’t started the Arc of a Scythe series? Start your journey now!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So.
Here we are.
Back in the Scythe-dom and ready for action.
But...if you haven't indulged in the trilogy, I highly suggest you backtrack to the start.
What's that?
Oh, I get it...who am I to tell you what books to read, let alone in what order to read them?
No one.
Just a fellow reader that has been there, understood that, and still begs you to listen!
This is a collection of stories FROM that world.  If you don't have the foundation to add them into, you've got a 75% chance of being lost...and lost is somewhere you don't want to be when dealing with those who's job is to essentially keep the population in check...if you get my drift.  Here, fans get what they never knew they wanted, and yet craved in some way nonetheless.  We get to see Scythe Marie Curie as she navigates her new role, while be anything other than accepted by her peers.  We have the chance to experience the events on a certain "All Hallows Eve" night that changed many things.  We see the egos and artistry, watch the growth and decay, feel the tension and call to movement that may not be in anyone's best interests.  We are privy to so many new things we never knew to desire, and yet now, having them in our grasp, couldn't fathom the trilogy being without.
So yes, indulge in this book, but first binge read the first three to plunge yourself into this fascinating world where death is an artform, and the right to practice it, a privilege few will achieve.
~~~   GUEST POST with Author Amy Nielander   ~~~

Hello friends! Thank you for inviting me to your blog, Gina. I‘m honored to be a guest!

MY NAME IS NOT ED TUG was inspired by my volunteer experience in our elementary school, but it was colored by my heritage. Being a Romanian-American, I was immersed in this distant country’s culture growing up. My dad was born and raised in Romania, but he moved to the United States in the early 70s. We were regularly involved in activities our tight-knit Romanian community organized for families. We attended church picnics, celebrated the New Year together, watched live musicians perform, danced in traditional line dances and learned Romanian songs. We savored Romanian dishes made with love by immigrants and Romanian-American volunteers, in bustling kitchens.

Our home felt like Romania had visited us often too. Rooms were dotted with hand crocheted doilies, wooden trinkets or striped, fringed table runners. Closets were speckled with billowy blouses or unusual hats, given to us from guests as gifts. As far away as we were from this country, our home and community made it feel steps closer. These loving, dynamic and colorful experiences I had as a child, influence me today. The energy that surrounded me then, is the energy that lives on in my artwork and stories now. I am grateful for that.

My maiden name was considered different growing up. It was easy to say, but constantly misspelled. Instead of “Cristof”, it was often written as “Christoff” or “Christof”. It didn’t usually bother me, until one day in 1st or 2nd grade. I had to spell my last name for the school secretary. Feeling under the weather, I had visited the office to call my mom. When I recited the spelling slowly and clearly, her response stunned me. “Are you sure that’s how you spell your name?” My heart felt like it had been stung by a bee...similar to the way my main character felt during one particular moment in MY NAME IS NOT ED TUG.

As active as we were in the community, I never learned the history of my maiden name.

My paternal grandparents remained in Romania when my father moved to the U.S. and my grandfather exists as a faded image in my memory, sadly. I wish I could remember him as a person. He visited only once, that I can recall, when I was a child. As an adult, I’ve always been a little hesitant to investigate our roots verbally with my dad. My bunicu’s passing caused him great grief. Over time, I chose to avoid waking that heartache.

To piece together the history behind my family name I experimented with Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org. After building a rough family tree, I quickly realized this bigger picture could take weeks or months to construct. Both sites produced reams of information to comb through and there are dozens of features to explore. I did make a small discovery though. Thanks to FamilySearch.org, I learned that Cristof has Hungarian, Czech, Slovak, Slovenian and Croatian roots. It is recognized as Kristóf or Krištof.

The main character in my picture book, Edimorwhitimormiligimmus Tug, was raised by his grandpa, great uncle, aunt and granny. I like to think he knows more about the history of his family name than I do about mine. But what we have in common, feels more important. Our childhoods were filled with loving, dynamic and colorful experiences that made our relationships, and names, memorable. MY NAME IS NOT ED TUG empowers readers to celebrate their identity so they can connect the different worlds they may live between, together.
