Happy BOOK BIRTHDAY to... The Radcliffe Ladies' Reading Club by Julia Bryan Thomas - REVIEW!

It’s Publication Day for SO MANY great titles this month, and while I would love to get them all in one felt swoop, SO not realistic! With that in mind, let me chisel away at the MUST ADD TO YOUR TBR list one book at a time. Are you ready? This one is for my Historical Fiction, and Women’s Fiction fans, and it celebrates its grand release day via Sourcebooks Landmark (woot woot! Go team, go!). It’s a story that introduces you to a group of young women on the cusp of their futures, and the grand (and not so grand) things that await them. Ladies, and gents, I give you our book of choice...

Sourcebooks Landmark

About the book...
Never underestimate the power of a woman with a shop full of books

Massachusetts, 1954. With bags packed alongside her heavy heart, Alice Campbell escaped halfway across the country and found herself in front of a derelict building tucked among the cobblestone streets of Cambridge. She turns it into the enchanting bookshop of her dreams, knowing firsthand the power of books to comfort the brokenhearted.

The Cambridge Bookshop soon becomes a haven for Tess, Caroline, Evie, and Merritt, who are all navigating the struggles of being newly independent college women in a world that seems to want to keep them in the kitchen. But when a member of the group finds herself shattered, everything they know about themselves will be called into question.

From the author of For Those Who Are Lost comes an extraordinary love letter to books and friendship, a story that is at once heart-wrenching, strengthening, and inspiring.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh my goodness!
Right from the start, this book had my heart. I was highlighting so many passages that I loved, for both the conversations and descriptions, that had it been in print, I’m pretty sure I would have nary a page left unmarked.
Meeting this group of women was an experience. First and foremost, Alice...she may have been considered the matron of the bunch, but she had life experience, love experience, loss experience. She had LIVED, and she was willing to share her gleaned knowledge with these ladies as needed without judgment, without impressing her own designs on it, or influencing their acceptance or rejection. She cultivated a climate, an atmosphere to challenge them to think for themselves, consider other angles, and may-hap form new views. She may have only met with them regularly once a month, but she was always there in spirit. As for our cheerful foursome, they were as varied as flowers in a field, while still being quite similar at heart. Each was looking for her place in the world. Each held her own prejudices and beliefs from which they were not easily swayed. Each would have decisions to make, hardships to face, and an uncertain future to take ownership of...however, each young woman would most certainly not end up in the same place. I hesitate to reveal too much of each of these characters because, as is often said in real life, they are not always what they at first seem. The twisted and winding roads their stories take will not surprise you at times, while completely shocking you at others...as will the turn of events later on in the story...but such is the path from childhood to adulthood. We are told things, taught ways, and eventually have to assimilate it into something that works for each of us...but the one thing that stays strong with all of them, even from afar, is their friendship.
A great read to explore during these summer days, and beyond, and a remarkable story you won’t want to put down. I highly suggest joining these ladies the first Thursday of the month, after all….we’re all serious book lovers here!
Sourcebooks Casablanca
About the author...
How the moose (almost) stole Christmas.
Lana Montgomery is everything the quirky small town of Moose Springs, Alaska can’t stand: a rich socialite with dreams of changing things for the better. But Lana’s determined to prove that she belongs…even if it means trading her stilettos for snow boots and tracking one of the town’s hairiest Christmas mysteries: the Santa Moose, an antlered Grinch hell-bent on destroying every bit of holiday cheer (and tinsel) it can sink its teeth into.
And really…how hard could it be?
The last few years have been tough on Rick Harding, and it’s not getting any easier now that his dream girl’s back in town. When Lana accidentally tranquilizes him instead of the Santa Moose, it’s clear she needs help, fast…and this could be his chance to finally catch her eye. It’s an all-out Christmas war, but if they can nab that darn moose before it destroys the town, Rick and Lana might finally find a place where they both belong…together.
Sourcebooks presents... AND THEN I TURNED INTO A MERMAID by Laura Kirkpatrick - REVIEW!
Land ho!  I mean, hello there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're getting a bit nautical with a new title via Sourcebooks Early Reads.  It's a the first in a Middle Grade Fiction series that has snark, heart, and seaside ambitions like you would not believe!  No, seriously, it's a grand old time on the high seas...well, next to the seas...well, okay at a fish-n-chip shop run by a rather unique family on the boardwalk, but it's on the water!  *ahem*  Anywho, ready or not, let wind blow through your hair, and the water call to your heart, as we welcome today's book of choice...
Book 1
by
Laura Kirkpatrick
Sourcebooks
About the book...
Molly Seabrook’s dull seaside life is turned upside down when she turns 13 and is let in on the family secret: she’s PART-MERMAID! Molly isn’t exactly thrilled. Not only does she already have to dress up as a fish to promote the family seafood restaurant, but now she actually is part fish? Growing up is hard enough without sprouting a fish tail in math class, or disguising your gills from the cute boy at the ice cream stand.
Will Molly sink or swim as she attempts to hide her (Very Weird) new double identity?
🐚     🐚     🐚     🐚     🐚
What do you get when you cross a Seabrook with those special teen years?  A 'tail' that you won't soon forget!
Molly Seabrook just wants what every other soon-to-be thirteen year old wants...to be popular, noticed by the boy she likes, and rock her teen years.  Instead, Molly is being inducted into a world of weirdness that every one of her older family members already belong to, and to top it all off, sprouting a tail to boot!  Honestly, it couldn't get any worse, right?  Umm, yeah...about that.  Not that she wants to shout her fishy news from the rooftops, but it has to remain a secret...like TOP secret...which is kind of hard when almost any decent amount of water suddenly can turn you from upstanding young lady into a quite literal fish out of water!  What's a girl to do?
Honestly, I LOVED the way this book was written...the dialogue was so spot on, I found myself wanting to read passage after passage aloud just to hear the humor, the sarcasm, the oh-my-godess-can-this-really-be-my-life moments, and then some!  I felt for Molly, I really did, and while yes, she had the support of her family, it didn't make it any easier to handle her new situation.  Watching her best friend friendship flounder, seeing her take it on the nose for simply being different (and we're not even talking about the secret!), and still trying to make amends...be the bigger person...it really touched my heart.  I mean, I'm all for turning the other cheek, but her bestie was a bit of a sea-witch when bit by the popularity bug (and something to do with the relationship is what kept me from going to the big FIVE STAR rating).  On the other hand, we've got Eddie of the Eddie (or Ears, you preference) who is such a kind soul and hopefully has a bigger role in future installments (fingers crossed!)...and we can't forget her beloved sisters (well, mostly beloved, sometimes annoying, and partially helpful) whom we discover have secrets of their own too.
In the end, it's a wonderful story filled with all the teen angst and growing up issues a girl can handle...with a scaly twist!  It reminds us that everyone is going through something, whether they wear it on their sleeve or not, and that kindness is always the best accessory.
PRE BOOK BIRTHDAY BUZZ: Cold Nose, Warm Heart by Mara Wells!
Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're spreading the word about a NEW TITLE COMING SOON from Sourcebooks Casablanca with some PRE BOOK BIRTHDAY BUZZ!  It's a Contemporary Romance from the 'enemies to more' trope for dog lovers everywhere!  Seriously, the canine to human ratio is almost on equal footing!  So grab your wish list and take a seat, as we introduce today's ebook of choice...
Fur Haven Dog Park, Book 1
by
Mara Wells
Sourcebooks Casablanca
About the book...
A poodle, a black lab and a Chihuahua walk into a dog park…
All Caleb Donovan has to do to redeem his family name is take a rundown Miami Beach apartment building and turn it into luxury condos. Easy, right?
Unfortunately, that would also turn the local dog park into a parking lot and the neighbors aren't having it. Caleb is faced with outright revolt, led by smart, beautiful building manager Riley Carson and her poodle, LouLou.
For Caleb, this project should have been a slam dunk. But even more challenging than the neighborhood resistance is the mutual attraction between him and Riley. It would be so much easier just to stay enemies.
Can Riley and her canine sidekick convince Caleb that what's best for business isn't always best for the heart?
🐾     💗     🐾     💗     🐾     💗     🐾
Image result for tiny heartImage result for puppy love, mini poodleImage result for tiny heart
The Donovan's lost their brilliant shine in a scandal to end all business scandals, but whereas some were without remorse, there are those that want to make a new go of things.  All they need is a second chance, the right opportunity...and maybe to turn what is some people's idea of a shabby nirvana into...condos?  Okay, well maybe that part of the plan isn't so good, but as much as I wanted to despise Caleb through and through, his heart kept showing.  That and let's face it, the fact that he's easy on the eyes, definitely kept me coming back...but yeah, he SO needs to work on first impressions (I'm here to fire you is NOT the best opening line...gheesh!).  Now, as for the one that has to resist him...
Riley is a great gal through and through.  She tries her hardest, has the best intentions of everyone in mind, but she's human...sometimes she falls.  Luckily for her, Caleb is there to catch her...and LouLou...several times, but she's an independent woman, perfectly capable of handling things on her own, and when the wool of attraction is removed from her eyes, the intents she initially sees are not the best.  She won't let Caleb destroy the lives of all those that depend on "the Dorothy" to be their safe haven, their forever (and FURever) home, no matter how charming he might be or how blue his eyes are.  She'll be strong.  She'll resist.  Or at least she'll try...and those good intentions, along with a fabulously snappy Grandmother, will take her a long way.
It was great getting to know everyone, human and non, and a wonderful way to be introduced to the Fur Haven Dog Park series.  Can't wait to see what's in store for both our two and four legged friends!
Hot on the ice and tall in the saddle…
Rancher and hockey coach Logan Rivers’ attempts to hire a housekeeper are hindered by women more interested in marriage than meal-planning. Down-on-her-luck single mom Harper Evans came to Colorado with one goal: to find her son and bring him home. Temporary work for a local rancher seems perfect, but to keep the job she has to deny her feelings for the hot cowboy who’s heating up her kitchen.
Logan walked back to stand next to her, their shoulders not quite touching as they looked at the tree together.
I love the star on top,” she told him. “Some people like to put an angel on the tree, but I’ve always preferred the star.”
Yeah? Why’s that?”
I don’t know. I guess I think of the star as a promise of something amazing ahead. Like the star the wise men follow in the Christmas story. They don’t question it, they don’t second-guess it, they just believe. And it led them to everything they would ever need. They didn’t have to earn it or even deserve it. They just had to follow the star, and the promise would be fulfilled.” The lights on the tree blurred and transformed to tiny twinkling stars as she blinked back the tears filling her eyes.
Sorry. I love the Christmas star the most, but I think stars in general are amazing. They’re so far away, and we shouldn’t even be able to see them, but we can. I think each one is like a little miracle, and maybe they shine so brightly because they hold so many of our wishes.”
She shook her head. “Gosh, that sounded so dorky. I sometimes think sappy stuff like this, but I don’t often say it out loud. I didn’t mean to get all gushy.”
It’s not gushy at all.” Logan gazed up at the star. “We always put the star on last, but I don’t know that I’ve ever really thought about what it represents. But I like what you said, that the star is a promise of something amazing ahead.”
They were standing shoulder to shoulder and not looking at each other, but she still felt as though they were seeing each other. As though here in the glow of a hundred tiny, sparkling lights, they were each giving the other a small piece of themselves, holding it out to see if the other would take it and cherish it, or refuse it with scorn.
I guess I’ve always thought stars represented whatever it was that you wanted,” he said. “Like your deepest desire. You know, you reach for the stars like you’re going for something you really want.” The back of his hand grazed hers, and his pinkie finger twined around hers. “We’ve always used the stars to guide us. The night sky was the original GPS. If you’re ever lost or can’t find your way, you can use the stars to lead you home.”
His words were doing nothing to quell the emotion building in her throat. She’d always loved the Christmas star, loved what it represented, but she didn’t think she’d ever said her feelings about it out loud. Or maybe she had.
Her son loved everything to do with space and the stars. She’d hoped to get him a telescope for Christmas this year. He loved to learn about the stars and the planets. One morning at breakfast, he’d told her he wanted to be an astronaut, to fly into space and be among the stars.
Harper remembered smiling and asking him why—and having her heart shatter into a million pieces when he said it was so he could be with his dad.
Thinking about Michael and Floyd and all she’d lost had pain piercing her heart. She missed them both so much. So much that she couldn’t see the right path to take or the correct choices she was supposed to make. She needed a star right now—needed something to guide her, to lead her to her deepest desire. She felt more lost than she’d ever been.
She stared into the lights of the tree and prayed for guidance and wisdom and for something to give her hope to hold on to. The ache in her chest felt as if it might turn her inside out and swallow her whole.
She started to tighten her hand into a fist and realized her fingers were now completely entwined with Logan’s. A surge of warmth had flowed through her a few seconds ago when his pinkie had gently looped around hers, but when had she taken his hand? And why was she squeezing it now as if he were the lifeline she’d been looking to cling to?
A sob threatened her throat, and she let go of his hand. She didn’t want to cling to anyone. She’d been down that road before, hanging on to other people, holding to the idea that they would save her. But there was no one to save her now. Not Michael, not her grandmother, and not the tall cowboy standing next to her.
The only one who could save her, and her boy, was her. The only one she could truly count on to come through for her was herself.
About the book...
Cathy Andrew’s biological clock has passed the ticking stage and is dangerously close to “blown plumb up.” Cathy wants it all: the husband, the baby, and a little house right there in Cadillac, Texas. She’s taken step one and gotten engaged to a reliable man, but she’s beginning to question their relationship. Does he really love her, or is she just arm candy for his political career? Why is her future mother-in-law getting increasingly hostile? Worse, why does he stand up for his mother when she says those awful things, instead of protecting her?
Cathy is full of self-doubt. Both of her options—going through with the wedding or breaking off her engagement—are beginning to look like a nightmare either way. She knows her friends will back her up, but she’s the one who has to make a decision that’s going to tear her apart.
~~~ EXCERPT ~~~

If Prissy Parnell hadn’t married Buster Jones and left Cadillac, Texas, for Pasadena, California, Marty wouldn’t have gotten the speeding ticket. It was all Prissy’s damn fault that Marty was in such a hurry to get to the Blue- Ribbon Jalapeño Society monthly meeting that night, so Prissy ought to have to shell out the almost two hundred dollars for that ticket.
They were already passing around the crystal bowl to take up the voting ballots when Marty slung open the door to Violet Prescott’s sunroom and yelled, “Don’t count ’em without my vote.”
Twenty faces turned to look at her and not a one of them, not even her twin sister, Cathy, was smiling. Hell’s bells, who had done pissed on their cucumber sandwiches before she got there, anyway? A person didn’t drop dead from lack of punctuality, did they?
One wall of the sunroom was glass and looked out over lush green lawns and flower gardens. The other three were covered with shadow boxes housing the blue ribbons that the members had won at the Texas State Fair for their jalapeño pepper entries. More than forty shadow boxes all reminding the members of their history and their responsibility for the upcoming year. Bless Cathy’s heart for doing her part. She had a little garden of jalapeños on the east side of the lawn and nurtured them like children. The newest shadow box held ribbons that she’d earned for the club with her pepper jelly and picante. It was the soil, or maybe she told them bedtime stories, but she, like her mamma and grandma, grew the hottest jalapeños in the state.
“It appears that Martha has decided to grace us with her pres-ence once again when it is time to vote for someone to take our dear Prissy’s place in the Blue- Ribbon Jalapeño Society. We really should amend our charter to state that a member has to attend more than one meeting every two years. You could appreciate the fact that we did amend it once to include you in the membership with your sister, who, by the way, has a spotless attendance record,” Violet said.
Violet, the queen of the club, as most of the members called it, was up near eighty years old, built like SpongeBob SquarePants, and had stovepipe jet- black hair right out of the bottle. Few people had the balls or the nerve to cross her, and those who did were put on her shit list right under Martha, aka Marty, Andrews’ name, which was always on the top.
Back in the beginning of the club days, before Marty was even born, the mayor’s wife held the top position on the shit list. When they’d formed the Blue- Ribbon Jalapeño Society, Loretta Massey and Violet almost went to war over the name of the new club. Loretta insisted that it be called a society, and Violet wanted it to be called a club. Belonging to a club just sounded so much fancier than saying that one belonged to a society. Loretta won when the vote came in, but Violet called it a club anyway and that’s what stuck. Rumor had it that Violet was instrumental in getting the mayor ousted just so they’d have to leave Grayson County and Loretta would have to quit the club.

Carlene could testify with her right hand raised to God and the left on the Good Book that her husband, Lenny, had been born with the disease and it had worsened with the years. Proof was held between her thumb and forefinger like a dead rat in the form of a pair of bikini underwear. They damn sure didn’t belong to her. Hell’s bells, she couldn’t get one leg in those tiny little things. And they did not belong to Lenny, either. Even if he had become an overnight cross- dresser, his ass wouldn’t fit into that skimpy pair of under- britches, not even if he greased himself down with bacon drippings.
They were bright red with a sparkling sequin heart sewn on the triangular front. They’d come with a matching corset with garter straps and fishnet hose. Carlene recognized them, because she’d designed the outfit herself at her lingerie shop, Bless My Bloomers. They belonged to a petite, size- four brunette with big brown eyes who had giggled and pranced when she saw herself in the mirror wearing the getup.
Carlene jumped when her cell phone rang. The ring tone said it was Lenny, but she was still speechless, staring at the scrap of satin in her hand.
She dropped to her knees on the carpet and bent forward into a tight ball, her blond hair falling over her face. She felt as if someone had kicked her firmly in the gut and she couldn’t breathe. In a few seconds she managed a sitting position, wrapped her arms around her midsection, and sucked in air, but it burned her lungs. The noise that came forth from her chest sounded like a wounded animal caught in a trap. Tears would have washed some of the pain away but they wouldn’t flow from her burning green eyes. Finally, she got control of the dry heaves and managed to pull herself up out of the heap of despair. Dear God, what was she going to do?
The brunette who’d bought the red- satin outfit had told her that she and her sugar daddy were going to Vegas, and she wanted something that would make him so hot he’d be ready to buy her an engagement ring. What was her name? Bailey? Brenda? No, something French, because Carlene remembered asking her about it. Bridget…that was it! Bridget had been to Vegas with Lenny. On how many other trips had he taken a bimbo with him and how many of them had been ten or fifteen years younger— and a size four, for God’s sake?
In seconds, the phone rang again. She picked it up and said, “Hello.” Her voice sounded like it was coming from the bottom of a well or, maybe, a sewer pipe.
“Carlene, I left my briefcase in my office. I slept on the sofa to keep from waking you, since I got in so late last night. Bring it to me before you go to work, and hurry. There’s a contract in it that I need and the people will be here to sign in ten minutes. I’ll hold them off with coffee until you get here.”
No good- bye.
No thank you, darlin’.
Not even a please.
Did he talk to Bridget like that?
Anger joined shock and pain as she dropped the panties back in the briefcase and then removed the little card she’d made for him to find that morning. She’d written that she was sorry she had fallen asleep before he got home and that she’d make it up to him that night with champagne and wild sex. She stood up, straightening to her full statuesque height of just a couple of inches under the six- foot mark. Damn that sorry bastard to hell. How could he do this to her?
