Guest Post with Author Sands Hetherington

I am a crummy essay writer. Just ask John and Crosley, the main characters in my Night Buddies series of books. They’d agree. My first year in college English was all essay-writing, and all I got was D’s. I deserved D’s.

I can dream up characters like John, Crosley, Crenwinkle, Big Foot Mae, and others, like in the Night Buddies adventures, and put them into stories, but ESSAYS? What in the ever-loving world do I put in an ESSAY?

Okay, though, OKAY. If I really must, I suppose it must be something I know about, right? I’ll tell you something I REALLY know about. It’s downright dull, but I just got through it this morning, with a little encouragement from John and Cros, who know about these things because of their racing blimp and the upkeep that goes along with it.

It’s about changing the oil on my 29-year-old Honda hatchback. I do this once a year. I have a more presentable car, but the Honda is my favorite. It does everything, and I never feel like I need to wash it. I do clean the windows when I can’t see out any longer (maybe once a year), and I usually vacuum the floors at the same time (more convenient), WHICH IS NOT TO SAY THAT I DON’T MAINTAIN THE MECHANICALS SCRUPULOUSLY. John and Cros would be disappointed if I didn’t. And so, the Honda runs great, and I trust it to go anywhere. It can still go 111 MPH, get 48 MPG, and has never shut down on me. The grimy looks don’t bother me. I find it kind of endearing.

But hey, this started out about changing the oil. This operation is fundamental to auto maintenance. Just about anybody will tell you that, including John and Crosley. (Unless the vehicle is electric?) So anyway, here’s what I did. (This is going to be dull, but you can do the job too if you can get an arm underneath your car and reach the sump plug. You usually can’t with the newer cars.)

So, I got in the Honda and drove the three miles to Walmart. You want to warm the oil up so it will drain easily. I picked up a few odd groceries, then headed to the back of the store where they keep the car stuff. There were rows and rows of all kinds of oil. I found four quart bottles of 5W-30 like it says to use in the manual. I paid and went home and parked in the garage where it’s level.

Then I went and fetched this big steel dogfood pan and a 17mm wrench. I raised the car hood and unscrewed the oil filler cap. Then I lay down on my side just behind the left rear wheel and shined my flashlight in.

The sump plug was where it had been since the car left Honda/Canada. I reached the wrench in as far as I could and got it on the plug. Two or three hard yanks and the thing came loose, and I unscrewed it with my fingers. It was HOT, and I jerked my hand back when it clanked into the pan with a gush of hot, black oil.

You need to give these things time. They can drip for hours, and you want to let all the crud come out. I went in the house and made a peanut butter and banana sandwich and sat down and ate it. I would have had a slice of Pineapple Cheesecake for dessert, but Crosley scarfed all of those down a long time ago. Then I grabbed some paper towels and went back outside.

I dragged the pan out and stuck the paper towels under the sump, then I poured the hot oil into a five-gallon can, to be recycled when it was full. I retrieved the plug and wiped it off with the paper towels and screwed it back into the sump. This left a little oil on the garage floor, and I wiped it up with the towels and threw them in the garbage can.

The rest was easier. The car holds three-and-a-half quarts of oil, and I poured in three quarts. Then I carefully poured in half of the last quart. There’s a transparent gauge on the bottle so you can do this accurately. I put the tops back on the four bottles and threw them in the trash. Did I say the garbage can is just outside the garage?

I screwed the oil cap back on the top of the engine, shut the hood, and went back in the house. Should I live, I’ll do the same thing next year. If I don’t live, the Honda will be around and looking for new oil.

So there! That’s how I changed my oil, and that’s all I can think of to say, except I made John and Cros proud!

About the author...

Sands Hetherington, creator of the Night Buddies series of chapter books, credits his son John for being his principal motivator. Sands and young John developed the Crosley crocodile character in the series during months of bedtime story give-and-take. They collaborated many nights on escapades starring John and Crosley until, eventually, it occurred to Sands why it was that Crosley was bright red. That was when the first book came together.

Sands majored in history at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) and has an M.F.A. in creative writing and an M.A. in English from UNC-Greensboro. He lives in Greensboro, North Carolina.

🐱  😸  😹  😻  😼  😽  😾

Cleo is a character and I love her all the more for it!
I love how she shows that there is a difference between being anti-social and simply liking to be around others on your own terms.  I love how she gets lost in her thoughts just like I do sometimes...to the point that up is down and left is right.  I love how she doesn't take setbacks personally...owning them and making them her own.  I love how the family reacts to her antics in their own ways, but they also take something away from each interaction too.  I love how Cleo claims her own space in the world around her without an apology or backward glance.  I love that Cleo loves books, in her own way, gets her way with her human family by being a bit clever, accepts her good side as well as her naughty instincts, and just plain lives her furry life to the fullest.  Through her adventures, readers learn the value of being yourself, exploring the world around them, and that family will always be there for you, come what may.  The colorful illustrations throughout bring Cleo's CATTITUDE to life, allowing younger readers to follow along visually, while those on the grow can see her antics more clearly.  It's a book that is destined to be your next FUR-vorite pick for story time or any time!

RRR presents... TOUR WARS by Carla Luna - REVIEW!

All roads lead to love in today's featured title, but that doesn't mean there aren't a few bumps along the way. On tour with Rachel's Random Resources and stopping by today, we've got the latest travel adventure from author Carla Luna that you're simply going to love! Ready, set, let's get packed and ready to go as we jump between the epages of today's ebook of choice...

Tour Wars
by
Carla Luna

About the book...
Ten days, two rivals, and a busload of tourists. How bad could it be?

For archaeologist Emilia Flores, landing a fellowship to work at the ancient ruins of Pompeii in Italy is a dream come true. The only catch? She’ll be digging alongside her infuriating nemesis, TJ Mayer, who’s been a constant thorn in her side.

TJ isn’t about to pass up the Pompeii project. Sure, he’ll be stuck working with Emilia, but he thrives on challenging her. And he hasn’t forgotten that secret kiss they shared at an archaeology conference last winter.

Though unearthing Pompeii’s treasures might be a dream, student debt is a nightmare that never takes a vacation. So, when TJ and Emilia are offered a lucrative side job to lead a ten-day tour through Southern Italy, they grudgingly agree to tackle it together.

Forced to set aside their animosity and work as a team, they forge an unexpected camaraderie. As the sparks between them ignite, their rivalry gives way to passion, making it easy to forget their years of fierce competition. But what happens when the tour ends and the real world steps in?

Tour Wars is a rivals-to-lovers, grumpy/sunshine romance featuring a nerdy cinnamon roll hero, a strong-willed Latina heroine, and plenty of hotel hijinks.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Emilia and TJ are the epitome of the enemies to lovers trope. They've been academic and professional rivals from day one, and all that tension bubbling just below the surface provide for some mighty fine potential when they're pushed together by circumstance one too many times. Let's just say that sparks definitely fly, making their connection a greater find than the most complete archeological discovery you could imagine.
I loved Emilia for who she was... driven, competitive, wanting to do things on her own, and reap the rewards of her efforts. She put herself into everything she did and wasn't afraid of hard work. TJ was very much the same, even if he had bad instincts when it came to matters of the heart, but even he catches up eventually, helping him put things to right and the both of them on the road to a happily-ever-after. There's a lot of fun to be had between the epages, and the story is one you won't want to leave behind come book's end. Good thing a reread is always an option. 😉
About the author...
Carla Luna writes contemporary romance with a dollop of humor and a pinch of spice. A former archaeologist, she still dreams of traveling to far-off places and channels that wanderlust into the settings of her stories. When she’s not writing, she works in a spice emporium where she gets paid to discuss food and share her favorite recipes. Her passions include Broadway musicals, baking, whimsical office supplies, and pop culture podcasts. Though she has roots in Los Angeles and Vancouver Island, she currently resides in Wisconsin with her family and her feisty Siberian cat.
This DOUBLE Book Birthday has gone to the dogs!
Tuesdays are for the bookish because it's NEW RELEASE day, and today, we're celebrating not one, but TWO titles out now (or very soon!) via Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing.  Both titles take the cake as they bring us stories featuring our furry four-legged friends, and, in the case of the first one, their human counterparts.  There is fun to be had and lessons to be learned, so lets get between the pages of today's selections...
About the book...
In a family of strong personalities with very strong points of view, Louis is what his mother lovingly calls “the inactivist,” someone who’d rather kick back than stand out. He only hopes he can stay under the radar when he starts high school in the fall, his first experience with public school after years of homeschooling.
But when a favor for a neighbor and his stinky canine companion unexpectedly turns into a bustling dog-walking business, Louis finds himself meeting an unprecedented number of new friends—both human and canine. Agatha, a quippy and cagey girl his age always seems to be telling two truths and a lie. Cyrus, a few years his senior, promises he’s going to show Louis how to be a better person, whether Louis wants him to or not. And then there are the dogs: misbehaving border terriers, the four (possible stolen) sausage dogs, the rest of Louis’s charges, and a mysterious white beast who appears at a certain spot at the edge of the woods.
Dogs and human alike all seem to have something they want to teach Louis, including his menacing older brother who keeps turning up everywhere. But is Louis ready to learn the lesson he needs most: how to stop being a lone wolf and be part of a pack.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
This one really hit home.
Louis is a kid that's facing the inevitable...growing up.  Life waits for no one, and his is certainly taking an active turn into the fast lane of late.  With his mom being away getting the help she needs, the human buffer in his life that helps him look at things in different ways while providing comfort through those growing pains is no where to be found. A Zoom call is not the same in this situation, and visiting hours are awfully short to sort out life's problems.  True, he has other family, but he's just learning how to reconnect with dad, his sister is well, his sister, and specializes in telling him what to do, and his older brother is best left out of the picture more often than not.  In short, his familiar world is in shambles, but there are still things that can bring in some light to the darkness.  His new dog walking business for one, and Aggie for another...but none of these connections are as straight forward as they at first seem, nor do they mean he'll be sheltered from heartache.  The best he can do is take it one day at a time, build the relationships, make the connections, and learn that while we might not always get what we want, there are ways to get what we need, and help those around us find that same sense of home.
I really took my time through this one as the story wasn't just CHARACTERS, PLOT, TWIST, and ENDING.  There was a lot going on even when barely anything was being said, and the author really lets you into the mind of young Louis to explore those feelings, that confusion, as well as delight in the moments when understanding dawns.  I appreciated meeting Cy, and celebrated knowing the force that was Aggie even when their lives weren't painted in the brightest colors.  It had a healthy dose of reality with a reminder that families aren't just made by blood, but also by choice.  You can be that person to somebody, if only you're willing to take a step in their direction.
The Great Puptective, Book 1
By
Illustrated by
9781665938242
Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers
Release Date: March 19th, 2024
About the book...
Truffles the cat is the only pet in the house and reigns in peace and quiet, only exerting himself to find the best place to take a nice, long nap—preferably in a spot of warm sunshine. Then Poppy the puppy bursts onto the scene.
Poppy is loud, enthusiastic, excitable, and—worst of all—a puptective! She’s got an eye for crime and a nose to solve all mysteries that come her way…even though she’s not completely sure what a mystery is.
Truffles cannot let this intrusion stand. Poppy won’t be able to continue disrupting his precious me-time if she’s shipped to the North Pole! But could this irrepressible new companion be just what this grumpy cat needs?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
This was the CUTEST!  😍
Poppy is BEYOND adorable.  She's the new puppy in town, well...the only puppy in town, and she's ready to explore, take on the world, and solve all the mysteries a puptective can...as soon as she finds out what the mystery to be solved IS exactly!  No worries...Truffles is HAPPY to help her out.  Yeah, and if you believe that, I have some swampland in Florida to sell you that houses buried treasure.  *ahem*  Suffice it to say that Truffles isn't exactly happy about his new "friend" and, just like siblings are apt to do, she gets on his last nerve, making his mission clear...he must get Poppy to move on out, so he can have his peaceful domain to himself once again.  That would be the perfect ending to this unwanted introduction...until it isn't.  You see, the more time you spend around someone, the more you get to know them, and the more you get to know them, the more you might kinda sorta not want to admit it but realize it even in the smallest part of your mind that you like them  The company, the interactions, and goodness forbid you mention the fun they bring to everyday things...Truffles is in for an unexpected awakening...but will it be too late?  *dun dun dunnn*
You'll laugh, you'll awww, you'll want to give them a big ole hug and call it a day, but as much as it is an adorable story about a dog and a cat, it also helps kiddos with life situations beyond those of the furry variety.  The lessons shared extend to the relationship shared between siblings, as well as when they meet someone new that could be a potential friend.  It helps them to see that NEW or DIFFERENT isn't a bad thing...it adds the spice to life, or the footprints to an otherwise clean floor.  It mixes things up, and helps us grow, while enriching our lives in ways we can't always measure.  With ridiculously cute illustrations throughout, you won't want to miss the kick off to this new series!
STORYBOOK SUNDAY celebrates Women's History Month with Abrams Books for Young Readers!
We're celebrating another day of bookish fun with Storybook Sunday! For those not up to speed on the post, I read a lot of great storybooks and thought, why not give them their own day in the sun. Hence, Storybook Sunday appears every now and then!
March is Women's History Month.  Here's a little "Did You Know" behind how it all started...
Did You Know? Women’s History Month started as Women’s History Week . . .
Women’s History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women planned and executed a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978. The organizers selected the week of March 8 to correspond with International Women’s Day. The movement spread across the country as other communities initiated their own Women’s History Week celebrations the following year.
In 1980, a consortium of women’s groups and historians—led by the National Women’s History Project (now the National Women's History Alliance)—successfully lobbied for national recognition. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8th 1980 as National Women’s History Week.
Subsequent Presidents continued to proclaim a National Women’s History Week in March until 1987 when Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as “Women’s History Month.” Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. Since 1995, each president has issued an annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.”
So, March is our month and there are so many reasons to celebrate, let alone so many fabulous women to discuss, stand behind, cheer for, and just plain recognize!  This year, the folks at Abrams Books for Young Readers helped me out with a few selections.  The first is a woman I've read a little bit about before, but whose story never fails to amaze me.  The second is a woman I'm just learning about, but her story is not only unique in its own right, its captivating and as important as any other in today's day and age.  Ladies and gents, let's jump right in...
HOW LUCILLE BALL DID IT ALL
Illustrated by
Brigette Barrager
9781419749926
Abrams Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: March 19, 2024
Lucille Ball...started out as a precocious young girl that knew her calling in life before she was old enough to drive.  She loved the sound of laughter, and bringing a smile to someone's face.  In a time when women were more seen and not heard, she was a stand out, but it didn't come easy.  It took dedication to a dream that naysayers refused to see as a possibility.  It took backbone when others shot her down and told her she couldn't do this well, or couldn't do that well.  It took gumption to keep on the path she saw so clearly for herself , and one day she not only achieved the dream she dreamt, but she made strides for women in the workforce, and those in power.  She became the Queen of Comedy...but did you know she called the shots on her show AND was a producer as well?  Hat's off this this feisty woman who the world couldn't keep down!
Her story is told in bite sized bits so younger readers won't be overwhelmed, while older readers will still be entertained.  The illustrations throughout burst with personality, and the limited color used until things turn full color in the end really make each image POP.
THE REVOLUTIONARY ART OF SISTER CORITA KENT
Illustrated by
Melissa Sweet
9781419752216
Abrams Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: April 16, 2024
Sister Corita Kent took art and made it SING.
It wasn't just about the creation of a marvelous work, but the making of something that told a story, proclaimed a message, conveyed hope, peace, and love.  It was about making art accessible to the masses, but also meaningful to them as well...and it wasn't always about creation either, but seeing things differently.  Think the infamous Pop Art soup cans...it took the ordinary and brought it into a new focus.  The same could be said for Corita's work.  She would focus in on smaller areas of life to bring it into a new view.  Nothing was out of bounds, and there was no wrong way to create art. Draw upside down? Certainly! Paint image after image of whatever comes to mind? Why not! It wasn't about prestige or wealth, but about the commonwealth, as in the need to express one's self, and bring understanding to the people.
The illustrations throughout really capture the eye and make you want to explore them further. You see not only the Sister's work and learn about her approach, but the style in which her story is told by the illustrator that brings it to life.
RRR presents... Can You Keep A Secret? by Jo Lovett - REVIEW!
It's often said that the only way to keep a secret is to either never tell it at all, or all but one party must have passed on.  Shocking, right?  Well, not so much if you REALLY think about it, but we're not taking that more morbid line of thought here today.  Our featured title currently touring with Rachel's Random Resources is touted as a Romantic Comedy, though I also see it as a Contemporary Fiction or Women's Fiction work, but however you slice it, it tackles a curious story line that is fun to see play out on the page.  In real life though...maybe not so much!  Let's get between the epages of today's ebook of choice and blog tour guest...
Can You Keep A Secret?
by
Jo Lovett
About the book...
One New Year’s Eve, Georgie James and her friends come up with a genius plan to help them stick to their resolutions… They all write down secrets, seal them in envelopes and then post them to each other. The secrets will be revealed at the end of the year if they haven’t kept their resolutions.
It’s perfect. Except…
Georgie's secret is BIG... and revealing it could destroy their friendships. She has no idea why she chose that one to write down. There are plenty of innocent things she could have said – even admitting she finds newcomer Raf incredibly annoying would have been better.
What she does know is that there’s no way she can let her secret be revealed. Which means she needs to keep her (nightmare) resolutions and, most importantly, get her envelope back before anyone can open it. Which, given she sent her secret to Raf, means spending a lot more time with him than she’d choose to...
A heartwarming romantic comedy for fans of Beth O’Leary and Mhairi McFarlane
Really.  Can you imagine?  I mean, if the "game" is played right, you could totally be revealing something deep, dark, and otherwise unknown to your friends if your willpower to follow through on those resolutions fails, and let's face it, most fall victim to them!  This foursome, albeit under the influence, play it right, and, like most alcohol tainted choices, regret this one in the morning.  The thing is, no one is really adult enough to admit it, so they each go about as if it was a perfectly sane decision, aim to hit those targets set, and if not, lie through their teeth to avoid the consequences and fallout.  Do they succeed?  Some more than others, but through all the ups and downs, they each discover sides of themselves and each other they really never knew, and uncover other secrets as well as truths that were lying in wait for the right moment to come along.  By the time New Year's rolls around again, they're ready...come what may.
I liked the concept, and I loved the group of friends.  Their personalities were each distinct and unique, yet the meshed like good friends always seem to do.  Watching them each tackle their new year challenges was amusing, but the most laughs came from Georgie and Raf...among them, the mom scene.  HA!  Imagine being caught going through his things BY HIS MOM with no good explanation, and...yeah, trust me, you won't be able to stop at least a good giggle!  The story has wide range appeal for Fiction fans of many sub genres, and it doesn't purely cater to the female side either, depending on the male reader, of course.  All in all, it was a fun way to read the night away while I waited desperately to see just how they were going to get out of what they walked themselves into!
