HI there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Oh look...there's that yellow Piper is fond of!
So, as I sit here and type this, I'm experiencing a multitude of "e" feelings...exhaustion, exhilaration, and exasperation.  The first and second actually go hand in hand as I've had a reading binge today...wait, strike that, yesterday...while finishing the books I'm featuring, and though I probably should have stayed home all day and read, I didn't, so sue me.  I worked a LONG week of LONG days and I needed a little sleep and a little down time, so yeah...exhausted due to time constraints, and exhilarated because of the books I'm bringing to you.  The third is because our weather forecast is currently calling for the soon-to-be-upgraded-to-a-hurricane Michael to head our way tonight or tomorrow, and all I can honestly think is...REALLY?!  Come on!  Who the hey invited you, Michael?  *ugh*  So, as I prepare (sorta) for potential weather related "fun", let's get this glamour fest started because today's Chronicle Books blog tour swinging through is placing you front and center with none other than Piper Perish in not one, but TWO titles!  Ready, set, flash that fashion forward style as we set out sights on...

About Piper Perish...
Warhol-obsessed Piper will have readers asking big questions along with her. What is love? What is friendship? What is family? What should I wear?

Piper Perish inhales air and exhales art. The sooner she and her best friends can get out of Houston and get to New York City, the better. Art school has been Piper's dream forever, and now that senior year is halfway over, she's never felt more ready. But in the final months before graduation, things are weird with her friends and stressful with three different guys, and Piper's sister's tyranny thwarts every attempt at happiness for the Perish family. Piper's art just might be enough to get her out. But is she brave enough to seize that power when it means giving up so much?

About Art Boss....
Artist Piper Perish has moved from her hometown of Houston, Texas, to New York City. Her days are spent exploring; her nights are filled with painting. It's her lifelong dream come true . . . . Except life in the city isn't as glamorous as it looks from afar. Piper's high-pressure work as an assistant to a famous modern artist takes away time from her own art. And Piper's new friend Grace, a budding activist, has Piper beginning to wonder if making great art is really enough.

In a story that stands alone but can be read as a companion novel to Piper Perish, acclaimed author Kayla Cagan returns with Piper's powerful and utterly authentic journey of growing up into a strong, independent young woman—as she learns how to make life about art, and how to make that art matter. Art Boss will have readers asking big questions along with Piper. What is art for? What can art do? And how can a young artist change the world?

Prepare for the creative genius that is PIPER PERISH (both book one AND the girl)...and friends!  Once upon a time, every artist had to start SOMEWHERE.  Whether their preferred outlet is paint, sculpture, video, music, fashion, jewelry, or any of the many other forms of artistic expression out there, they all started with a dream, a desire, a talent that needed molding, cultivating, and exposure.  Don't tell that to Piper, Kit, and Enzo because honey, they already know!  High schoolers or not, they have the talent, know what they want, and (mostly) how to get it...if only the world would cooperate and stop with the proverbial monkey wrenches.  Those wrenches present themselves in numerous ways from college acceptance gauntlets to relationship drama, friendships turned competitions to familial battles, and everything in between.  The work-throughs are colorful, vibrant, and powerful with long lasting repercussions carried forward for better or worse.  Piper's all so certain future turns into a big fat question mark as her friends and family fall into various shards of sharp beauty around her.  With her artistic inspiration firmly in grasp, and a twist of her creative mind in a new direction, it doesn't mean that her journey is at an end...just perhaps an unexpected beginning...which leads us to book two.

ART BOSS...I was happy to see the title phrase in book one, but surprised to see it applied to our girl Piper for book two. Happily surprised, mind you, but still, the shift was unexpected.  Anywho, this time around, our fabulous girl Piper is taking on the Big Apple, meeting new friends while holding on to those long bonded with, and figuring out just how to make her art AND her mark in the world!  It's not the future she dreamed of, but it's definitely a learning experience and with some fairly notable names to boot!  I mean, it's not every day one gets to be involved in New York Fashion Week, am I right?  A world of possibilities is at her feet, but the walk is gonna be anything but paved in gold.  From creative roadblocks to personal struggles, artistic challenges to dream crushers, it's enough to smash anyone's spirit...but then again, you have to know Piper.  She's not the girl to take things lying down...well, for long at least...and she's definitely not one to give up (after a good pep talk, either from herself or her besties)!  Suffice it to say, this is one rise to fame you won't want to miss!

All in all, quite the duo of reading material to indulge in.  It took me a moment to get into the writing style as we're basically reading about everything through Piper's journal entries on a day by day and month by month basis, but once on board, it was smooth sailing.  Two things I particularly loved...the outer and unde covers (so fitting!) and that while the stories definitely connect, as in literally pick up right after the other, they can still be read as stand alone titles as book two samples enough of the first to keep you in the loop.  The characters are memorable, the story relate-able, and the ending...not necessarily the final curtain call for our girl Perish.  It really brings all the feels and will make you think about so many things from the future to our past, what really matters to us and how to be in the NOW NOW NOW (loved Mrs. Adams!).  Recommended for artistic fiends, hipsters, and anyone who enjoys a Young Adult story infused with a whole lot of artistic spirit!

Whilst I think Piper sounds just like the kind of character I enjoy, I'm not sure about the format. Oh well, never say never, these are books I'll be sure to keep in mind.
