TwoSpells by Mark Morrison

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're shining the spotlight on a Middle Grade Fantasy adventure that's filled with MAGIC, DANGER, and all the bookish fun you could ever dream of.  Don't believe me?  Well then, that's your first problem, and without that belief, how exactly are you going to accept the magically infused truth I'm about to present...because trust me, this is one book you're not gonna want to miss!  Ready or not, gather your strength, muster your courage, and prepare to embark on a journey through the pages (quite literally!) with today's ebook of choice...

Mark Morrison

About the book...
Sarah and her twin brother Jon are heirs to an ancient magical realm and its most valuable treasure, an enchanted library. The library endows readers with the supernatural means of crossing into the uncharted inner-sanctum of the second dimension, inhabited with peculiar and sometimes perilous creatures.

The children are emboldened with a wondrous mystical gift that no other being has ever possessed. But fate intervenes and triggers a disastrous inter-dimensional war that disrupts the fabric of time and space spanning multiple universes, tearing destiny a new and savage pathway.

The two must rescue their world from a phantom hybrid alien race controlled by a demented dark-wizard, Jeremy Sermack. They will either assimilate or be exterminated.

Will they be the saviors the prophets spoke of, or will they retreat to the perceived safety of their distant homeland?

As fantastical as the cover looks, the story is TWICE as good!

Have you ever imagined being able to step INSIDE the stories you read?  Ever imagined experiencing the story FIRST HAND with your own eyes?  Feeling the breeze in your hair, the grass beneath your feet...the wolf with sharp teeth and palpable hunger breathing down your neck?  *gulp*  Okay, so maybe not that last part, but still...EVERY reader has thought about it at some point, but have you ever considered what the consequences would actually be?  I mean, think about it...the stories LIVE AND BREATHE between those pages, lives are lost, battles are won, journeys are taken, truths are uncovered, and a new soul in the mix would quite possibly irrevocably throw things off...well then, I guess it's a GOOD THING that we can't actually DO that, at least it is to the extent that is illustrated by our illustrious heroes here...

Sarah and Jon are definitely not the leaders you'd expect to take charge and bring a magical library back to order, but's not the size of the hero or heroine, but the heart, determination, and spirit...and these two got those in spades!  True, they're only now learning of their magical heritage, but they catch on quick, and a good thing too because those dark forces gathering are about to come to a serious head, and unless they are able to pull things together (along with a good amount of help from some new faces in their own stories), they'll be saying adios to them before they even get use to them!  I gotta admit though, despite the dangers lurking around every corner, despite the not necessarily pleasant surprises the pop up with the turn of a page (within the story), it's still be pretty cool to at least experience the story walkthrough...just once, not like those kids that were addicted to it.  ~shudders~

All in all, it was definitely a special story told with a lot of heart.  The author made the characters memorable with all their quirks and idiosyncrasies. It reminds us that no man/woman is an island unto themselves, accepting a helping hand is not a sign of weakness, and that magic exists in our everyday lives, if only we'll look for it.  Of course, it's easier to recognize when you keep circling a mountain and encounter a different story every time, but you know...that'd be splitting hairs.  😉  Highly recommended for Middle Grade Fantasy fans and beyond...

About the author...

Mark Morrison

Mark [Morrison] was born number seven of eight children in a small town in Ohio. His family moved to Florida where he grew up, met an incredible woman, got married and raised four fantastic children, three boys and a girl.

Many years later, an empty nest left him to his true calling, storytelling. His first remarkable story is about a heroine whose courage and unrestrained personality—like his daughter’s—breathes passion and fervor into this adrenaline-packed story.

Whilst holding down a full time job, and working 28 hour emergency on call shifts, she has managed to find the time to share that wild imagination with the world by writing online fan fiction stories about the CW series Supernatural.

She enjoyed it so much that, with a lot of encouragement from her husband, she decided to write her own stories. Not an easy task for somone dogged by anxiety and depression, and since her diagnosis in 2013 she has also been battling with Ulcerative Colitis.

In spite of her struggles, Tales from the Forest, a series of short stories set in a magical realm, began to take physical form on her laptop screen, and her black labrador Nelson is a valiant hero in some of the stories. As an avid animal lover, she has vowed that all proceeds from the sale of this book series will help to set up a forever home sanctuary for stray, elderly and abandoned dogs.

Although still working full time at the hospital, she has turned her thoughts to the future, and now holds a Diploma in Dog Training from the Centre of Excellence, and is currently studying towards a Diploma in Canine Communication in order to prepare for a life of working with rescue dogs.

Orville Mouse and the Puzzle of the Clockwork Glowbirds by Tom Hoffman

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, I'm over the moon to be sharing a recent LISTEN I had of the first book in what promises to be an AMAZING series.  What's that?  You caught the "listen" part?  Well yes, I did in fact partake of the AUDIO version of this book (graciously shared by the author), and I'm not kidding in the least when I say...I absolutely ADORED it!  Seriously, as much as I LOVE my paper books (and the fact that I went out and bought the set via attests to that fact!), I can't imagine this one being done any better.  The voices were perfect, the narration speed wonderful, the emotions fully articulated in every scene...shall I keep going?  Well I will, just not in this vein because there's still the STORY to get to.  If you'd like a sample of the audio version though, keep reading...I've included the link/video from YouTube further down in my post.  Now then, it's time to make the acquaintance of Orville Wellington Mouse, Metaphysical Adventurer and his wonderful friends in Book 1 of the series...

Orville Wellington Mouse, Book 1
Tom Hoffman
Narrated by
Jason Zenobia

About the book...
Orville Wellington Mouse lives with his mum in the quiet fishing village of Muridaan Falls, Symoca. His life takes an unexpected turn when he learns his best friend, Sophia Mouse, is not only from another planet, but is also a member of the Shapers Guild, a group of powerful mice who are able to convert their thoughts into physical objects.

When Orville notices a group of seven glowbirds exhibiting rather extraordinary behavior, he and Sophia attempt to uncover the origin of the unusual birds but soon find themselves enmeshed in a fiendish plot to embroil Symoca in a horrific war.

Captured by the powerful and mysterious Red Mouse, the two adventurers are hurled through a spectral door into the terrifying world of Periculum, home of the dreaded giant, carnivorous centipedes.

With help from the secretive Metaphysical Adventurers, Proto the Rabbiton, the Mad Mouse of Muridaan, a gigantic Gnorli bird, some ghostly Anarkkian warriors, and the enigmatic Monks of the Blue Robe, Orville and Sophia must find their way home and stop the evil Red Mouse before he destroys Symoca.

Creakers!  That was AMAZING!

It masquerades as a Children's or Young Adult novel, but is so SO much more of a grand adventure than you could possibly dream! With new friends to make around every corner, and dangers to face with abnormally large tentacles and many many rows of teeth, this is one story you won't want to miss. I'm not even generally a fan of audio books, seeing as my tally of those listened to leans towards about THREE in my lifetime, but the FANTASTIC tale itself combined with the narrator's telling was a PERFECT combination...complete with an assortment of voices befitting each of our new friends... and even our enemies!  It really and truthfully made this brilliant story come to life in a whole new way.

Seriously, by book's end, I was completely and utterly enchanted.  You'll come for the magic, stay for the adventure, and come clamoring back for more as you learn along with our wonderful leads all the fantastical wonders that exist, the magic...I mean, science behind the extraordinary, and the true source of unlimited power.  You'll also be left longing to meet Orville, Sophia, Proto, Master Marlowe, and the mysterious Blue Mouse...while snacking on an assortment of chocolate cremes and tasty little cakes!  Hey, when you hear/read about them, you'll want them too...good thing there shan't be a shortage any time soon.

About the author...

Tom Hoffman received a B.S. in psychology from Georgetown University in 1972 and a B.A. in 1980 from the now-defunct Oregon College of Art. He has lived in Alaska with his wife Alexis since 1973. They have two adult children and two adorable grandchildren. Tom was a graphic designer and artist for over 35 years. Redirecting his imagination from art to writing, he wrote his first novel, The Eleventh Ring, at age 63. He recently completed the five book series, Orville Wellington Mouse Adventures.

The Bartholomew the Adventurer Trilogy and the Orville Wellington Mouse Adventures are multi-leveled stories which have been compared to such classics as Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit, and The NeverEnding Story. The books were written for his grandchildren to first enjoy as thrilling adventure tales, then later on a deeper level the underlying themes of ethics, metaphysics, philosophy, quantum physics, and spirituality. The books were written to provide an alternate way to view the world we live in. To see magic as science we don't understand, to see all life as a single force, all equally precious, no matter the form. A world where violence is not necessary, a world where the protagonists are changed forever by their difficult choices, by their own sacrifices. A world of empathy, kindness, and love. And of course, ten foot tall ancient robotic rabbits and gigantic carnivorous centipedes living on post apocalyptic planets!

Allison Rushby
Candlewick Press

About the book...
Twelve-year-old Flossie is no ordinary ghost — she's the caretaker of every soul in Highgate Cemetery. And during World War II, even the ghosts aren't safe.

Flossie Birdwhistle is the Turnkey at London's Highgate Cemetery. As Turnkey, it's Flossie's job to ensure that all the souls buried in the cemetery stay at rest. Not an easy job for a young ghost, but a task made especially difficult by World War II: London is being attacked every night by enemy bombers, and even the dead are unsettled. When Flossie encounters the ghost of a German soldier carrying a mysterious object that seems to exist in both the living and spirit worlds, she becomes suspicious — what is the officer up to? Before long, Flossie uncovers a sinister plot that could destroy not only her cemetery, but also her beloved country. Can Flossie and her ghostly friends stop the soldier before it's too late? History collides with the supernatural in this exciting, ethereal mystery from Allison Rushby.

A curious read about the keepers of our spirit's comfort at life's end set amidst WWII as the evil powers that be try to bridge the world of twilights and the living for nefarious purposes...

Can you just imagine?  WHAT IF the Hitler regime had been able to accomplish what is being attempted in this book?  I mean, the effects would have been devastating on such another level, I can't even begin to envision it...and yet, it is said he did have an obsession or sorts with the occult, and supernatural interests.  *shivers*  Sorry, but no one should have so much power, especially with that much hatred in their heart, but I digress...this book isn't JUST about the war and what COULD have been.  It's about the enumerable souls left behind in the rubble, those that passed from natural causes and those "helped along" by the tragedies occurring all around them, and where they all fit in.  A phrase repeated much was that it wasn't their was for the living and they were beyond that world's reach for all intents and purposes.  Thing is once the soldier appeared, all bets were off and choosing inaction would leave ghostly blood on their hands regardless of who would or would not see it.  Flossie may have been an unusual pick for a turnkey, but she was without a doubt chosen, and with good reason.  Despite her lack of years, she's knowledgeable, dependable, compassionate, and determined.  She faces down ghosts from her own past, conquers unanswered questions that left fear in her formerly beating heart, and manages to keep the faith and stand strong when everything seems to be crumbling to the ground.

In the end, there was so much learned and so many miles of the heart covered, showing us that looks can be deceiving, not all lost can be saved, and sometimes the greatest thing we can give is ourselves.  A great pick for Historical Fiction fans as well as the Middle Grade set.  The use of a younger soul to guide the way makes it more approachable, while her lack of confidence makes her seem more human.  After all, we aren't all born with a backbone of steel...but it doesn't mean we can't accomplish great things in this life...or even perhaps in the after.

Some of her favourite books, re-read countless dog-eared times include Rumer Godden's The Dolls' House, Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden, Dodie Smith's I Capture the Castle and Noel Streatfield's "Shoes" series. She has long been a fan of cities with long, winding histories, wild, overgrown cemeteries, red brick Victorian museums, foxes and ivy.
