Black or White?: Colorblind by Leah Harper Bowron

HI there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're stepping back in time to the year 1968.  What's the significance?  Aside from the war waging on the other side of the world, lives were being torn apart on our very soil after two highly publicized assassinations.  WARNING...what you are about to read will be hard at times, but it's a part of history, something to be learned from, not forgotten.  Ready or not, fair readers, let's turn our attention to today's book of choice...

Leah Harper Brown

About the book...
The time is 1968. The place is Montgomery, Alabama. The story is one of resilience in the face of discrimination and bullying. Using the racially charged word "Negro," two Caucasian boys repeatedly bully Miss Annie Loomis--the first African-American teacher at the all-white Wyatt Elementary School. At the same time, using the hateful word “harelip,” the boys repeatedly bully Miss Loomis’s eleven-year-old Caucasian student, Lisa Parker, who was born with cleft palate and cleft lip. Who will best the bullies? Only Lisa’s mood ring knows for sure.

Short and decidedly not sweet due to the subject matter covered, but oh so telling of an age not so far in our past to be considered ancient history.

Image result for cruel

Lisa is your average eleven year-old, just trying to figure out life and get through the daily struggle that it currently is.  What struggles could a little girl have?  More than you might think, considering the times she lives in and especially when we take into account her own secret, which is decidedly bigger than whom she simply has a crush on.  Grant it, her hidden truth shouldn't matter, after all, it's more an omission than a secret, and it doesn't define her, but let's face it...people can be cruel and sadly, she is surrounded by them both at home and school.

Now, Mr. Parker (her father) is a good man, always teaching Lisa by his side not by his hand, and it's obvious she gets her sense of truth and justice from him.  Her mother?  Not so fact, if I had her within ear's reach, she'd get a piece of my mind!  Then we have Miss Annie Loomis, a breath of fresh air in these stagnant parts, no matter how much she wishes to be anywhere but where she is.  The struggles they will face, the ignorance they will have to combat, the similarities of their tails even before they were acquainted, will astound, while the lessons to be learned reverberate long after the final page turn.

Overall, the author does a wonderful job of reminding us that while, yes, everyone can be a victim of bullying for whatever reason, it's up to ALL OF US to stop it in its tracks, whether we're one of many or a voice of one.  WORD TO THE WISE...the book is written the way that is is (antagonistic, and straight forward) to reflect the times, the thinking, and small mindedness, but boy can it be hard to read! It had me seeing daggers and my heart clenching at the ignorance, while wanting to whisk Lisa and friends away from it all.  ...and that's before I even knew that the author was writing from her own experiences to some degree!  I know I'll be remembering the brave deeds of little Lisa for many moons to come, and hoping against hope that other readers will be touched similarly.

The Crowns of Croswald by D.E. Night

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're diving into the Glanagerie bottle (more on that in a moment) after the first book in what is posed to be an EPIC new series!  It's a work of Middle Grade Fantasy that will have readers making comparisons to a particular wizardry story, but for all the RIGHT reasons.  Don't believe me?  Ah yes, I figured you may need more than simply a nudge in the right direction...though count your lucky stars, it could be hundreds of quills flying at you and poking you in the rear end!  *ahem*  Anyway, let's get down to business because today's post starts out as magic filled as the story itself.
What you're looking at is a box.
Okay, just kidding, but only just.
THIS box is what arrived on my doorstep so many odd days ago.  If you look carefully there, it has book spines on the side with rather peculiar titles that spark the imagination from the word go.  Well, of course I couldn't wait to see what was inside, so a few tape slices later and...
We're in...but into what is the real question.
I mean, the "specially created for" bit was lovely and mysterious, especially if you noticed who exactly the box was FROM (take another look...go ahead)...and what's with this newspaper inclusion...
Why, it looks like a discarded copy of Scriven This, the go to guide for news in the scrivenist community!  Why yes, I'd love to adopt a Hairie...and sour scrub sounds rather helpful, but what's with the double moon business?  All thoughts I had, and answers I intended to find, but first, MORE UNPACKING because, after all, it was a magical box, and while that was all fun and dandy, the magic was still to be revealed....
Is that what I think it is?
Yes...yes it was/is.
It is my very own Glanagerie Bottle and for those not currently in the know, it allows the user to experience worlds from their imagination and test their magical mettle while in a (relatively) safe environment.  SO COOL (and pretty!)!  I knew I had to keep it close at hand as I prepared to start reading...

About the book...
In Croswald, the only thing more powerful than dark magic is one secret…
For sixteen years Ivy Lovely has been hidden behind an enchanted boundary that separates the mundane from the magical. When Ivy crosses the border, her powers awaken. Curiosity leads her crashing through a series of adventures at the Halls of Ivy, a school where students learn to master their magical blood and the power of Croswald’s mysterious gems. When Ivy’s magic––and her life––is threatened by the Dark Queen, she scrambles to unearth her history and save Croswald before the truth is swept away forever.

From the first page turn, you know you're in for quite a treat.  There's magic, mystery, and the potential for mayhem hiding around every corner...and that's only the beginning!

Image result for cupboard under the stairs harry potter

Much like the boy living under the stairs and making as little noise as possible, young Ivy grew up knowing what it felt like to go unnoticed (except in times of trouble), unwanted (unless there was a chore to be done that no one else was willing to do), and, for the most part, unloved.  Such a sad case to report, but report it I must...although if you were paying attention, you may have noticed I said "for the most part" regarding the lack of love.  You see, while parental love was missing and even the guidance or instruction of other relatives, she did have Rimbrick...a crafty little dwarf who had more up his sleeve than you could possibly imagine.  One day when the scaldrons (dragons that fit into magical resizing cages and keep the kitchens in the business of hot prepared food) run amiss (okay, one in particular), Ivy takes a leap of faith beyond the boundaries of her homestead and into the arms of a magical destiny she...knew...nothing...of!  *GASP!*  That's right...there's more to our girl than meets the eye and while she discovers her own heritage, the world is about to find something they didn't realize they were missing (darn Forgotten Room!)...or should I say SOMEONE (times two!).

You can't help but love our girl Ivy and she is as lovely as her last name dictates.  She's a friend through to the end, courageous, genuine, and always there for those in need.  She's had a rough time of life thus far, but she's not one to give up even when things seem hopeless, even when fear seems greater than all the good in the world, even when there's a cute boy she's got a bit of a crush on popping up pretty much EVERYWHERE and she's not exactly making the best impression.  Ivy stays true to herself, which makes her all the more endearing, and embraces what fate has in store for her, but you better believe she's not about to take it lying down.  Along the way, we make fast friends with few (Fyn, Rebecca, Winsome...and more!) and enemies aplenty (let's start and end with the Dark Queen, okay?  Okay....), after all, people don't always like what (or who) they don't understand.

Image result for magic

In the end, all I can say is what an adventure! To think all that Ivy had uncovered and overcome in the past year (only a year?!)...and yet there are so many more harrowing experiences to come, if she survives the Dark Queen ♛, that is. Sorry, no spoilers here because really and truly, you need to experience this one for yourself!  As for me, I'll be eagerly awaiting the next adventure into the lands of Croswald, wherever that might take us, and pondering over all we learned between these pages and trying to procure my own hairie until that blissful day.

The Resistance: Revolt by Tracy Lawson

Hi guys!
Welcome back to part two of today's bookish celebration, here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

If you haven't heard, the #GetReadytoRevolt cry went out earlier today as we blew party horns and threw confetti in honor of the day's release.  It's the latest from author Tracy Lawson and the last in what has been an epic series of Young Adult Dystopian brew-ha-ha, entitled The Resistance.  What began with Counteract, carried on with Resist, went even further with Ignite, and now finally settles amid the ash and dust in today's book of choice...

Revolt (Resistance, #4)

The Resistance, Book 4
Tracy Lawson

About the book...
To Deny Freedom is to Deny the Human Spirit.

Fugitive Resistance fighter Tommy Bailey has come out of hiding to help rescue Careen Catecher from the clutches of the Office of Civilian Safety and Defense, where she’s been held and interrogated for information about the rebel group. The OCSD is poised to launch the Cerberean Link, a security device that will put all minors under constant surveillance under the guise of protecting them.

Fearful that OCSD director Madalyn Davies’s bid for control won’t stop there, the Resistance puts its own plan in motion to sabotage the Link and oust Madalyn from the directorship. Just when everything seems leveraged in the Resistance’s favor, treachery, lies, and long-held secrets threaten to derail it all.

Will even a life together on the run be impossible for Tommy and Careen? Or will the Resistance’s efforts convince the public to put their fears aside and demand freedom?

Begun and done in a single reading session... and with good reason!
Word to the wise...DO NOT SKIP the first three books!  You need that information, that history, to know what's going down and why some things that may seem like minute details are actually bigger than life.  Anyway, back to the story...

Image result for brainwash

We picked up just where the last book left off, allowing readers to easily catch back up with the status of their favorite and not so favorite characters. Tommy and Careen are back, but not exactly as themselves, considering all that went down at the end of book three though, I'm not really surprised. Careen's journey back to herself is gonna be tough, after all brainwashing and torture are not your everyday fair, but if anyone can overcome and help turn this resistance effort around, it's her...with a goodly dose of help from her friends (and more than friends! 😉), of course...well, after she figures out who they are.  I told you, the powers that be really messed her up, but she's a fighter and you've got to put your faith somewhere in order to survive this craziness.  Tommy earns some mad props for his dedication to getting her through what she's survived thus far and all that is to come...even if she does almost kill him a time or two.  Hey, I'm not going to spoil the fun, but just like in all the other novels, things are not always what they seem, nor are the people that seem trustworthy, actually telling the truth.

Action packed from start to finish and filled with enough conspiracy theories come to life to scare any red blooded American...then again considering our world today, maybe a little close to home.  We make new friends, see old ones turn astray, discover that power can go to anyone's head, and that sometimes the best solution is the simplest one that's been staring us in the face the whole time. Highly recommended for an exciting addition to your summer reading!

About the book...
Kelly Murphy's life as a tulip farmer is pretty routine—up at dawn, off to work, lather, rinse, repeat. But everything changes one sun-washed summer with two dramatic homecomings: Griffith Burnett—Tulpen Crossing's prodigal son, who's set his sights on Kelly—and Olivia, her beautiful, wayward and, as far as Kelly is concerned, unwelcome sister. Tempted by Griffith, annoyed by Olivia, Kelly is overwhelmed by the secrets that were so easy to keep when she was alone.

But Olivia's return isn't as triumphant as she pretends. Her job has no future, and ever since her dad sent her away from the bad boy she loved, she has felt cut off from her past. She's determined to reclaim her man and her place in the family…whether her sister likes it or not. For ten years, she and Kelly have been strangers. Olivia will get by without her approval now.

While Kelly and Olivia butt heads, their secrets tumble out in a big hot mess, revealing some truths that will change everything they thought they knew. Can they forgive each other—and themselves—and redefine what it means to be sisters?

The best way to share this story is through the eyes of its characters as they are the ones that truly make this tale what it is.  Whether it be their quirky personalities, transparent demeanor, ulterior motives, or unusual take on "the truth", they all work to shape the story in remarkable ways.  First up, the ladies...

Kelly...I loved her no nonsense approach to life, how she'd take each day as it came, and the way she'd pour herself into her work.  It was her life's breath, the only thing outside of her family structure she'd ever known, and she was good at it too...but that doesn't mean it should have to be her everything.  After her last relationship ended and the decimation of her home life so many odd years ago, I get that she's gun shy...can't blame her either, I'd be too...but I was also glad to see the changes that came her way.  NO, I DID NOT WANT HER HURT...but sometimes the greatest healing comes after the biggest heartaches. were a tough nut to crack.  Gospel truth...I didn't like you for the longest time, probably longer than Kelly.  Once you had your own weaknesses bared, I finally felt for you.  I get you turned out, the road you took, even the way you viewed made sense....but it still didn't make it right, for you or for those it affected.  When you finally found your footing and starting turning things around, I was so happy for you...but I did worry about that rather large (and blonde) secret you were unintentionally keeping as it had the power to blow up right in your face.  After all, full disclosure is just that, full disclosure, and while your past didn't dictate the necessary behaviors to follow, once your heart found its voice, you finally had a fighting chance of really being free.

Helen...though a "sister of the heart" versus blood, your bond with Kelly was so much stronger than the one she carried with her actual sister.  Grant it the past had a lot to do with it, but don't sell yourself short either!  You were a true blue friend through thick and thin, despite where your other interests may have wanted to lie...or with whom.  The fact that you respected her so much to not screw things up even at your own detriment was heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time.  I was so happy when you finally broke your silence but so scared for you as well, and hoped against hope that it would turn out right in the end (though really, could you have chosen a better communicator for crying out loud?).  You're strength of character and ability to always find your way were commendable, but your real beauty was the size of your heart.

There...we've mentioned the most important women in our midst, Marilee...SO does not count.  (THAT WOMAN!  UGH!)  As for the fellows...

Image result for tulip laying

I was always at odds on my like or dislike for Griffith as he is just so plain faced, not in looks but in personality.  I mean, he's quite literally a guy who says what he means but not always with the usual finesse.  His desire to work on his connection with Kelly was commendable,, the study sessions were definitely not what I was prepared for.  *ahem*  Anywho, he's still a good guy, just a little odd...though aren't we all?  Next up, Sven...and I finally understand the undressed drawing of him on my Tulip Sisters bookmark.  Let's just say, he's not ashamed of his body and much prefers the buff.  Her penchant for nudity aside, he's actually a good guy...much more so than I initially assumed.  Grant it, he does mess up in an uber buttheaded way, but we'll blame it on the fact that he's a guy and call it a day.  Speaking of being a guy, let's chat a sec about Jeff.  His potential love connection is not what we usually see in most novels, but it doesn't mean it has any less ability to set the night on fire.  One things though...he needs to work on his communication skills, or lack thereof.  I mean to be all hot and heavy one moment and then disappear for all practical purposes the next, speaks more for a guy half his age, and even then it's aggravating!

In the end, the tale woven around these character's lives is one to remember and I can definitely see myself making the trip back to Tulpen Crossing should the opportunity present itself.  Though we do get a final wrap up of sorts at book's end, tying everyone's loose ends together, just like that jiggly concoction hospitals are so fond of, there's always room for more...stories, characters, and world building world, that is!  Highly recommended to Susan Mallery's current fan base as well as those just being introduced and looking for a new add to their reading list this summer.
