12 Days of Picture Books: The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt

HI guys and gals!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're still kicking it with the fabulous folks from Penguin Young Readers as we help to close out a very special holiday promotion...

...the 12 Days of Picture Books!  If you didn't already know, it stars 12 fabulous Picture Book titles from their recent catalog additions that would make a sweet addition to anyone's holiday reading, or shopping list.  I've actually featured a few of the titles here over the past several weeks and honestly, I've enjoyed every minute of it.

This is the 12th and final day of the official celebration but don't let that stop you from indulging in the featured titles as well as the myriad of wonderful options out there just waiting to be enjoyed.  Now, back to the story at hand.  This book and the story's delivery reminded me of a childhood favorite, The Jolly Postman.  If you haven't had the pleasure of reading it, you should ...it's delightful!  Anywho, it's a story about a postman delivering mail to fairy tale favorites complete with pull out letters, pound notes, and more.  Though not the same to that extent, it does share an aspect of it and that my friends would have been enough to draw me in, but there was SO much more!  Ladies and gents, children of all ages, please join me as we welcome today's book of choice...

The Day the Crayons Came Home

This is the story of Duncan and his crayons.  You see, like most children his age (oh, who are we kidding...of any age!), he liked nothing more than to wile away an afternoon surrounded by pictures to color and the colorful waxy tools to color them.  All those beautiful colors, so many options to choose from.  With the right choice, the sky turns blue, the sea green, and the sun yellow...but wait a minute.  Yellow seems to be missing...as does Maroon, Pea Green, and several others.  Hmm...where do you suppose they got off to?  That my friends is exactly where the REAL fun of this Picture Book adventure begins.

Though the tale of Duncan's long lost crayons, it's not just a telling of where they were lost, or which colors they were.  As the title implies, it tells how they CAME HOME and the way their stories are conveyed is a smile-worthy work of art.  From Paperclip's heroic rescue of Maroon from the couch to Brown's courageous journey through man's best friend (don't ask...*-*), from Pea Green's desire to find himself as well as a more likable name to the shared fate of Yellow and Orange as they stick together (quite literally), there's a tale to be told by each and until their reunion, the post will have to tell it for them.  That's right.  The post as in postal mail because believe it or not, they send Duncan their love and hope for rescue through POSTCARDS complete with pictures of their current location and a few artful illustrations along the way.  Though all were noteworthy, I'd say my favorite would have to be Neon Red and her long journey back across the seas, ice, desert...okay, so perhaps a lack of direction aided in her lengthy tale, but it was memorable nonetheless, as was the final outcome of all the crayons journeys!

All in all, a surprising treat for readers of all ages that is sure to delight, intrigue, and let the imagination run wild.  Also, it might remind those with their own box of 72 colors to be a bit more careful with exactly where they leave them once done for the day.  *ahem*  Oh and don't miss Glow-in-the-dark Crayon's page for an extra special treat!

12 Days of Picture Books: The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak

Hi guys!
Welcome back to the place that aims to please the reader in you...Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

As promised, we're back with ANOTHER great post for you today.  This time it's arriving via the #12DaysofPictureBooks celebration roving through the blogosphere right now with Penguin Books for Young Readers.

Time to dive back into the 12 Days of Picture Books celebration (already in progress) from Penguin Young Readers.  If you didn't already know, it stars 12 fabulous Picture Book titles from their recent catalog additions that would make a sweet addition to anyone's holiday reading, or shopping list.  I've actually featured a few of the titles here over the past several weeks and a few others are still to come, but without further ado, let's turn our attention to today's book of choice and "12 Days..." title....

The Book with No Pictures

From the back cover...

WARNING!
This book looks serious but it is actually COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS!

If a kid is trying to make you read this book, the kid is playing a trick on you.  You will end up saying SILLY THINGS and making everybody LAUGH AND LAUGH!

Don't say I didn't warn you...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That warning is definitely right track.
So, if you haven't guessed, the star of the show is a Picture Book, but this isn't just another addition to the genre.  It is unique, different, outside the box, cracked the mold....you get the picture, right?  GOOD!  I was running out of ways to describe its individualness without sounding funny.  ^-^  What's that?  I already was?  No worries...I'm good with this.
From the moment you turn the first page, the second you utter the first word (because it IS intended to read aloud), you know you're in for it.  What exactly it is is still to be determined, but something, something BIG indeed.  As you follow the narrator, nay BECOME the narrator, things take a turn for the HI-larious as you start to say words you'd never say, and revelations about yourself (according to the book) that would never pass your lips.  Things get even hairier as the story progresses and as the narrator, you practically BEG to stop reading this book because it's just TOO SILLY to continue.  Seriously, you snark and huff and puff and by the time you've shouted your last BONK through the pages, you've finally reached a fantastically funny end.
Who'd have thought?!  A Picture Book with no pictures.  It leaves the imagination fully open to take flight and the audience to their own devices as the story builds, asking them to BE the images they wished to see, to act out all that was read from the page and capture the magic lying in wait as they see fit.  It was a curious read to say the least, but SO MUCH FUN.  I can definitely see this one being asked for over and over in the classroom and at home, though I would warn them about  the amount of fun to be has once begun.
Recommended read for all ages.  There's not a soul that couldn't appreciate this well-intentioned story and a reader that couldn't use the break in their current schedule for an imagination filled adventure through the pages.
12 Days of Picture Books: Mitford at the Fashion Zoo by Donald Robertson
Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Well I can officially say that the business of my week took a toll on my brain. This post should have been LIVE early this morning and when I scheduled it out...it's posting NOW.  *-*  So sorry everyone!  Trust me though, it's definitely a case of saving the best for last or rather later in the day.
Time to dive back into the 12 Days of Picture Books celebration (already in progress) from Penguin Young Readers.  If you didn't already know, it stars 12 fabulous Picture Book titles from their recent catalog additions that would make a sweet addition to anyone's holiday reading, or shopping list.  I've actually featured a few of the titles here over the past several weeks and a few others are still to come, but without further ado, let's turn our attention to today's book of choice and "12 Days..." title....
Mitford at the Fashion Zoo by Donald Robertson
Think Devil Wears Prada meets 13 Going on 30, aimed at the kiddo set but PERFECTO for all ages!
Mitford is the most adorable wanna be fashion editor's assistant EVER!  Truly!  Unlike in the actual model industry where those resembling giraffes are glorified, Mitford's gangly appearance, individual awkwardness, and inexperience in the industry work totally against him.  It's not until Panda Summers, THE editor at 'Cover', is in desperate need that NHR Mouse decides to give him a chance.  A hope, a sneeze, and some ingenuity later, and Mitford has inadvertently secured his place in the fashion industry, endearing himself to all in need, and showing he has a real nose for the business.
I'm serious readers, this book is 100% fun!  From cover to cover with all the words in-between, it tells a story all can relate to while relaying the message that dreams are never out of reach unless you give up on them.  The illustrations throughout truly resemble the artwork you'd see in a new-line-design type of portfolio and thoroughly represent each situation Mitford finds himself in from exasperated start to stunning solution.  Try not to laugh as he gets Shark Jakobs out from behind his fashion rut.  Keep your grin in check when traffic is standing between Panda Summers' arrival at the fashion show and Mitford comes through with a "modern" mode of transport.  Attempt to contain your bubbling mirth when Zap's fashion show is a slithering success thanks to a last minute cameo by some out of work actresssssss thanks to Mitford's ingenuity.
In short, it's a TALL tale to tell with several large shoes to fill, but who better to do it than Mitford and you can bet they'll be fashionable from every angle.  Recommended for the tall to the small as it has something for everyone.  The little ones will enjoy the images, slightly older will get the humorous situations, and the adults will see the hidden laughs and play on names/words throughout.
