* * * EXCERPT * * *

“What’s going on?” A guy called down from the porch above us. “Is somebody there? Did somebody fall?”

Sutter and I exchanged uh oh looks and a woman on the porch squealed. “Ohmygoodness! It’s a body! This is fantastic! I know what this is. It’s one of those murder mystery weekends right here at the Grand Hotel. The victim’s right there, I can see him all sprawled out on the ground. Oh this is so much fun.”

“Look, lady,” Sutter shot back. “This is no mystery weekend party this is a real crime scene here.”

“Of course it is,” she squealed again. “You all are great actors, this is amazing. What a fantastic surprise right here on Mackinac Island.”

BLOG TOUR: Once Upon a Grind by Cleo Coyle - Review, Guest Note + CONTESTS!

Hi guys!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're saying a big HELLO to a blog tour via Great Escapes Blog Tours starring the 14th addition to the Coffeehouse Mystery series.  Know of it?  You should and if you don't allow me to introduce you...I insist!  Today's book of choice is...

About the book....
When coffeehouse manager turned amateur sleuth Clare Cosi roasts “magic” beans for a Fairy Tale Fall event, she brews up a vision that leads to a sleeping beauty in Central Park; a big, bad wolf of Wall Street; and an East Side enclave with storybook secrets…

Fairy tale fever has descended on New York City. Broadway fans are flocking to Red Riding Hood: The Musical; museums are exhibiting art inspired by the Brothers Grimm; and Clare Cosi and her merry band of baristas give their coffee truck a “Jack and the Beanstalk” makeover for a Central Park festival. Clare’s coffee hunter ex-husband contributes a bag of African beans with alleged magical properties. His octogenarian mother entertains customers with readings of the grinds, but Clare remains skeptical–until she receives a vision that helps her find a young model’s body in the park’s woods.

The police dismiss “sleeping beauty” as the victim of a drug overdose. Then Clare uncovers evidence that points to a list of suspects–from a New York Giant to quite a few wicked witches–and a cold case murder that reaches back to the Cold War. Now Clare is really in the woods with a dangerous predator on her heels and an investigation that leads from a secret Prince Charming Club right back to her own NYPD detective boyfriend. If she doesn’t solve this mystery, those magic beans predict an unhappy ending.

In a word....wonderful!
In many words....much more than that.

This being the 14th installment in the Coffeehouse Mystery series, one would expect a reader to have some familiarity with it before embarking on a journey through the pages.  Well now, THAT would have been the wrong assumption.  Let's just say that I'm a reader that likes to take chances (sometimes) and while this series was on my radar for a while, I'd not picked it up as of yet....until now.  THIS was my inaugral voyage into the writing of author Cleo Coyle.  THIS was my first taste of the coffees and just desserts offered by the Village Blend.  THIS was my first meeting with Claire Cosi, Mike Quinn, Matt, Madame, and so many more.  Did I like what I read?  Why yes, indeed!

Claire is a a great leading lady.  She's both strong and emotional, motherly and formidable, smart and not easily pushed aside.  She takes on more than she can brew, I mean chew, in a heartbeat and if family or friends are threatened, WATCH OUT.  I enjoyed seeing the care she showed for Mike's children, the heart she shared with her staff when faced with personal demons, and her selflessness when trying to help Anya, Red, and even her ex Matt.  A master brewer she may be, but she knows the human condition just as well.  Those that play partner in her adventures are just as memorable as is the story as it unravels layer by layer.  While the draw for some may be all the coffee talk, I loved the fairy tale spell placed on the overall story.  It starts during Fairy Tale Week (which sounds INCREDIBLE by the way), winds its way into the Prince Charming Club, and ends with more than one Sleeping Beauty.  If you manage to figure out what's stewing beneath it all along the way, more power to you my friends because I for one was take by complete surprise.

In closing, I can only think that as grand as this adventure was, it could only be made better by watching the story unfold from the beginning.  So, guess what I'm adding to my "wish list"?  Yep.  The rest of the series...and you know what?  I can't wait.  And now ladies and gents, it's time for an EXTRA SPECIAL treat for I have the pleasure of not only hosting a spot on this fabulous tour, but featuring a Guest Note from author Cleo Coyle!

A Note From Cleo....

For over a decade, my partner in crime-writing has also been my partner in marriage. This begs the question: Can a husband and wife really write murder mysteries together without killing each other?

In a word yes. While the writing process isn’t always a party, Marc and I completely respect each other. When we have creative disagreements—and we do—we check our egos at the door and argue things out rationally. Marc will present his side, and I will present mine. Then comes the alcohol (or a really good meal). In the course of the discussion, one of us can usually persuade the other or we’ll find a middle ground. The truth is, neither of us cares whose idea wins, as long as it leads to a good story well told.

Is Once Upon a Grind a good story? Heck, yeah! It’s a wicked good murder mystery. We had a grand time writing it, and we hope you’ll have as much fun reading it.

Our new release is also a culinary mystery, featuring some unique foods that might make you drool on the page (or screen), especially the Black Forest Brownies, Silver Dollar Chocolate Chip Cookies, and Ale-Battered Onion Rings.

To sample some of the book’s wicked good recipes click here.

Holiday Cookie Swap! Today we’re sharing another tasty cookie with you: Eggnog Shortbread with Eggnog Glaze. This is one of the most popular recipes on our blog, and you can get the recipe now by clicking here.

SECRET CODE: The 9th of the 9 words in Cleo’s Secret Code Contest is WILL. (Learn how to enter Cleo’s Secret Code giveaway here.)

Thank you to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers for hosting us today. And thank you for joining us on this delightful Coffeehouse Escape Blog Tour.

May your reading be joyful, and may your holidays be bright!

BLOG TOUR: Well Read, Then Dead by Terrie Farley Moran + GIVEAWAY!

Hi guys!
Post two of the day here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the place where we simply just can't get enough BOOKS and it's no secret that you know EXACTLY what I mean.  ^_^

This time, we're playing host to and helping to kick off (whoo hoo!) a blog tour via Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours (Hi, Lori!) and featuring another cozy mystery for you genre fans out there.  It's bookish and fun and well, everything a cozy should be.  Ready to dive in?  Let's!  Today's featured book of choice and blog tour guest is....

Well Read, Then Dead
by
Terrie Farley Moran

Berkley Prime Crime

Nestled in the barrier islands of Florida's Gulf Coast, Fort Myers Beach is home to Mary "Sassy" Cabot and Bridget Mayfield—owners of the bookstore café, Read 'Em and Eat. But when they're not dishing about books or serving up scones, Sassy and Bridgy are keeping tabs on hard-boiled murder.

Read 'Em and Eat is known for its delicious breakfast and lunch treats, along with quite a colorful clientele. If it's not Rowena Gustavson loudly debating the merits of the current book club selection, it's Miss Augusta Maddox lecturing tourists on rumors of sunken treasure among the islands. It's no wonder Sassy's favorite is Delia Batson, a regular at the Emily Dickinson table. Augusta's cousin and best friend Delia is painfully shy—which makes the news of her murder all the more shocking.

No one is more distraught than Augusta, and Sassy wants to help any way she can. But Augusta doesn't have time for sympathy. She wants Delia's killer found—and she's not taking no for an answer. Now Sassy is on the case, and she'd better act fast before there's any more trouble in paradise.

Includes a buttermilk pie recipe!

Okay, I've said it before and I'll say it again...how is it that the Cozy Mystery genre has the market cornered on quirky but catchy titles that are either too cute or too much fun?  I mean really, they just call to you, am I right?  Now, take the title with the cover (which I LOVE by the way) and mash it together with what's inside....instant work of bookish art.

Story wise, it has all the key components; a who done it, likable and non-likable characters, a small town where everyone is connected to everyone else in 3 steps or less, you know....the works.  I really liked the attitudes and mannerisms that jumped off the page, for example Aunt Ophie (woo-eee!  That woman knows how to take charge!) and Augusta Maddox (a firecracker in an older woman's body.  Are they our leads?  Well, not exactly, but they make an impact nonetheless.

Along with the story and characters, I really must say I ADORED the setting, not only does it take place close enough to my neck of the woods, but the bookstore/cafe the ladies run....Read 'Em and Eat....LOVE!  They have author named and themed tables complete with quotes and passages laminated to the tables.  They have dishes like Old Man and the Sea  Chowder and Catcher in the Rye Toast.  See?  Tell me you're NOT smiling?  It's definitely a place any bookish soul could call home whilst taking in some delicious eats at the same time.

So, while I came for the title and cover, I stayed for the location and the ladies leading the pack in solving the murder of the beloved soft spoken local, Miss Delia.  Trying to solve the crime committed along the way is only half the fun; the rest comes from taking in the sights, sounds, eats and reads that crop up here and there.  Recommended read for older teens through adults that are looking for another series to add to their wish list....yes, you read that right; it's the FIRST book in a new series. Who doesn't love the promise of future reads?

BLOG TOUR: Death on Eat Street by J.J. Cook

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the place to be when you're in the mood for a wordy escape from the every day; we've got you covered.

Today, we're playing host yet again to the final leg of a blog tour celebration courtesy of Great Escapes Book Tours (hi, Lori!).  It stars a cozy mystery that's a perfect fit for my site for not only is it a bookish adventure but a foody one as well.  There are even a few recipes at book's end to tie it all together!  Too cute.  Anywho, back to the matter at hand, today's blog tour guest and featured title is....

A Biscuit Bowl Food Truck Mystery:
Death on Eat Street
by
J.J. Cook

Berkley

About the book....
Zoe Chase always wanted to own her own restaurant—but first, she’ll have to serve up a heaping helping of meals on wheels, with a side of mystery. When she’s once again passed over for a promotion at work, Zoe decides to take the big leap and go for her dream. She quits, gives up her fancy digs, and buys a fixer-upper diner in a shady part of town. To keep above water during the renovation, she buys a used food truck to serve the downtown and waterfront of Mobile, Alabama. Zoe starts to dish out classic Southern food—but her specialty is her deep-fried biscuit bowls that blow traditional bread bowls away. After a promising start, things start to go downhill faster than a food truck without brakes. First, someone tries to rob the cash register. Next, Zoe is threatened by the owner of a competing food truck for taking their spot. And when the owner ends up dead inside Zoe’s rolling restaurant, Zoe and her sole employee, Ollie, find themselves hopping out of the frying pan into the fryer. They need to find the real killer, before both of them get burned.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The trouble I have with a lot of cozy mysteries is that they are heavy on the cozy, light on the mystery.  Often times you can guess right from the start the who-what-when-where-why-and-how of it all....not so in this little niblet.  The author duo focus more on creating a likable lead with curious friends and a potential love interest than on fluff merely meant to entertain while only somewhat shielding the final outcome.  Here, you get so caught up in Zoe's struggle to stand on her own two feet, her dreams of feeding the masses while putting a smile on their faces and her do-gooder attitude that the mystery unfolds as the story progresses not all at once.  A recipe for success?  In my book, it is.
I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Zoe in all her crazy curly haired glory.  I respect her ambition and dedication to her dream even if times are tough....she may not be the toughest, but she DOES get going!  Her choice of friends and acquaintances is interesting to say the least but it adds unexpected flavor to the story.  Ollie and Marty have pasts of their own landing them in the shelter they currently call home, but it doesn't make them bad fellows; after all, it's not what's on the outside but what's within that counts.  The same can be said for Delia who comes off as ...um, well not exactly an intellectual but what she lacks in IQ points, she more than makes up for in personality and heart.  Speaking of heart, Zoe's heart strings are plucked by not one but TWO potential suitors!  I won't even allude to (Miguel) whom I think (Miguel) she'd make a great couple (Miguel) with.  (hehe). ...I'll let you figure that one out for yourself.
All in all, a cozy mystery with a story as satisfying as the biscuit bowls she serves....with savory AND sweet fillings for one and all.  If you're looking for a great reading escape for your next afternoon or weekend break, definitely consider this tasty treat.  You won't be sorry...and even if you were for some unfathomable reason, the delicious sounding recipes at book's end will put a positive spin on things toot suite.  (Oh yes, I DO intend on trying them....)
BLOG TOUR: Teacup Turbulence by Linda O. Johnston
Hi guys!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers…the place to be when you’re in the mood for food to satisfy the heart and mind; you know, the bookish variety.
Today, we’re playing host to a blog tour courtesy of Lori at Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours, starring two of my favorite things…books and puppies!  Oh come on…how can you honestly resist the precious little fuzzy wuzzies?  I know I can’t, as my fur baby brood at home would tell you, supposing you could understand them as well as I…and neither can the leading lads and lasses in today’s story.  Get the leashes ready and have the biscuits on standby, today’s book of choice and blog tour guest is ready to meet and greet….
A Pet Rescue Mystery, Book 5:
By
9780425259979
A Berkley Prime Crime Mystery
About the book…
Los Angeles animal shelter manager Lauren Vancouver has a soft spot for animals in need – and a keen eye for crime…
Thanks to a savvy ad campaign featuring teacup pups sporting HotPets Bling – a new line of faux jewelry dog collars – small dog adoptions have skyrocketed across the city.  So when Lauren discovers a shelter in the Midwest with more toy dogs than it can handle, she arranges a private plane to swoop in and fly the pups back to L.A.
But Lauren didn’t count on rescue worker Teresa Kantrim coming along for the ride.  Teresa has cared for the dogs since they were found and doesn’t trust anyone from La-La Land to take over the job.  Her biting comments clearly haven’t earned Teresa any new friends, but when she turns up murdered, it’s time for Lauren to dig into Teresa’s past and find out who wanted her put down.
This is a cozy mystery; that is a mystery that has light mystery, no gore, a lack of foulness in other ways, and light on the romance.  I don’t read them often but sometimes I indulge…you can’t help it.  They have the niftiest titles!  Now, here’s something about cozy’s that I’ve always been told, you either love them or you not-so-love-them…there’s no in-between.  I, however, am apparently one of the contradictions of that “rule”.
While I wasn’t in love with the book where I couldn’t put it down and had to eat, sleep, and read it in order to make it through the day (oh, just admit it…you’ve felt that way about a book or two at the very least), I did enjoy it.  I found the human characters for the most part endearing…though some garnered more tolerance (hello Teresa! Or rather goodbye seeing as how you’re murdered not too far into the story) than actual acceptance (Lauren, Matt, all their friends, the volunteers, her colleagues…need I say more?).  The pups that litter the pages, from HotRescues to their own personal pooches, were heart warming…and some of the names they had tugged at my own memories (R.I.P. my sweet Zoey) while others simply made me smile (a teacup named Challenger…*grin*).
The actual mystery was pretty straight forward, including some of the who-done-its.  I mean, I did actually see a good portion of it coming…not exactly what you look for in a novel.  HOWEVER, and that’s a big however, the final outcome including the revelation of all the players involved, as well as the resolution of an additional mystery we never knew about (~hehe~), DO come as a surprise so I’d say that all’s well that ends well…and this one DOES end well.
Final thoughts…a short and sweet read that’s light on the action but pours on the charm, perfect for your weekend bring-a-long or bedtime read.  Though I wish some parts were fleshed out more, that’s not the nature of this particular beast (or rather genre) so I’ll take it as it is and welcome it with a smile.  Will I be seeking out the rest of the series?  Undecided at this point to be honest, but I do know that I enjoyed my time in La-La Land with this animal friendly crew and certainly respect their dedication to the cause.  Oh, and in case you were wondering, I do believe this is one of those series that you can pick up anywhere along the way and still be 100% included in the Scooby gang.  Just sayin’…and with cute titles like this one, not to mention Beaglemania, and The More the Terrier, there’s bound to be you simply can’t resist!
Review copy received courtesy of Lori at Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours.  (THANKS!)  For more information on this title as well as the growing Pet Rescue Mysteries series, be sure to stop by the publisher’s site or seek out the author online.  This book is available now from The Berkley Publishing Group, A Penguin Random House Company…so be on the lookout for it on a bookstore shelf near you.  Can't wait to run to your local store?  No worries!  Here's a few online options to get you  started...Amazon, Book World, Barnes and Noble.  This being a blog tour, be sure to stop by the other sites hosting as well, like StephtheBookworm who is also a stop today…you never know what fun is in store for you; well unless you visit, hence the inviting and all.  ^_^
Until next time…happy reading!
