Remarkable Magic

The Hybrid Magic Chronicles Book 3

by Cristy L. Bowlin

Genre: YA Fantasy

Amid new threats and unsettling discoveries, hope still perseveres.

Aaron is done letting the Defenders control his life. He refuses to continue running and hiding. The Defenders claim that hybrid mages are dangerous abominations, but Aaron and Lilith are determined to prove otherwise. Meanwhile, Elara and Theo are grappling with formidable new abilities that they never expected to possess. Striking out on their own, Aaron and his friends discover another group of hybrid mages living in the desert who are preparing to fight. New alliances are forged, yet not everyone agrees on how to confront the Defenders. When more people see what hybrid magic can do, it could either be revered or feared even more. Aaron and his friends must make some tough decisions before those choices are taken from them.

-*-*-*  CHAPTER ONE  *-*-*-

Theo was the last to enter the tavern, hanging back as they had agreed. Pipe smoke permeated throughout the open dining area and mingled with the scents of alcohol and sweat. Theo stood next to the wall, trying not to cough, while his friends walked to the bar. Elara bought a drink and sat on a stool. Aaron and Lilith continued walking until they reached a piano in the corner of the room.

Theo furrowed his brow when Aaron took a seat on the piano bench and started playing. He didn’t realize Aaron knew how to play an instrument. However, Theo’s jaw nearly dropped open when Lilith started singing. Her voice was a melodic soprano reminiscent of birdsong. It shouldn’t have surprised Theo, yet he stood there awestruck at the performance. He soon realized he wasn’t the only one in awe. The whole room quieted as people turned their attention to Aaron and Lilith. This wasn’t part of the plan they discussed, but it would set the stage for Lilith’s speech.

When Lilith finished singing, everyone in the room applauded as if they were at a concert hall rather than a tavern. Lilith dipped into a curtsy as Aaron played the final chords in the song. Then Lilith stood on top of the piano bench and cleared her throat. “Thank you all for listening to our song.”

“Play another one!” someone shouted.

Lilith smiled. “We would be happy to, but first my friend and I have something to tell you all.”

Elara made eye contact with Theo across the room. She looked nervous, and Theo imagined he wore a similar expression on his face. He wanted to be there beside Lilith and Aaron in case anything bad happened, but they insisted that they had to introduce themselves first on their own. As the youngest and smallest among them, Lilith was the least threatening and most likely to garner sympathy. And with Aaron’s fame, people would quickly recognize his name if not his appearance, so he would be of the most interest. Elara and Theo could be introduced a bit later if the crowd reacted positively to the presence of hybrid mages. If not, Elara and Theo could remain anonymous and cause some type of distraction, allowing Aaron and Lilith to slip out of the building.

“My name is Lilith Brouning, and this is my good friend Aaron Ztrong. We are both hybrid mages.” She paused as people started murmuring amongst themselves, and then she held up the Defender pamphlet Aaron grabbed earlier. “Some people like to call us dark mages. I’m sure you are all familiar with the Defenders of the True Four. Maybe some of you have even read their pamphlets and agreed with some of the things they had to say. But I’m here to tell you the ugly truth about them. They tried to kill Aaron, and they succeeded in murdering my parents. They would get rid of every last hybrid mage if they could.

“I understand why they have their concerns about us because Florella Jacobsen was a hybrid mage, and she did unspeakable things during the Jacobsen Conflict. She was responsible for far more deaths than the Defenders, but now she herself is dead. She will cause no more harm to any of us, and I can promise you that Aaron and I are nothing like her.”

Aaron stood up next to Lilith. He gestured to the piano behind them. “We enjoy the same pastimes as all of you. We have families we care about deeply. We make mistakes sometimes, but that’s part of what makes us human. All we want is to be able to live our lives without constant fear of being hunted down.”

“That’s why we are here today,” Lilith said. “We’ve been hiding ourselves away for more than a year, and we simply cannot do it anymore. How free has the Deravine Commonwealth really become if there are still some mages who can’t be true to themselves?”

A few hisses rose up from the crowd as people cursed the commonwealth, but twice as many people shushed the critics. When the room quieted again, Lilith held up her hands in a placating gesture. “Politics aside, I hope we all can agree that what the Defenders have been doing is outright persecution. Their crusade must come to an end. I hope the next time you see one of these pamphlets, you will tear it down and throw it away.” She crumpled the pamphlet in her hand and threw it on the ground. Some people clapped, which Theo considered a small victory at least.

A man and woman abruptly stood, scraping their chairs across the wood floor. “That’s a nice speech, to be sure,” the woman said, “but actions speak louder than words. We know you fought alongside Florella the day she died.”

Lilith scowled. “We were fighting for our own lives because a group of Defenders attacked us. Florella happened to be with us because we had captured her.”

“So you say,” the man mumbled. “Doesn’t mean we can trust your word for it.” He raised both his hands and threw balls of fire directly at Lilith and Aaron.

SPRING CLEANING... Bookish Style!

So, the weather has been fair to awful.
Work has been uber busy, and not so much fun.
Home life has been chaotic as usual.
Reading...oh, but the reading has been fine!

📕   📖   📗   📖   📘   📖  📙

The only thing is that I have a few titles that have unintentionally piled up, so it's time to do a little SPRING CLEANING of my HAVE READ pile. What's that mean for you? A plethora of reviews to tantalize, tease, and tempt their way on to your MUST READ list. You're welcome. 😁
Shall we get this bookish party started?  You're about to embark on a journey through Historical Romance, Contemporary Romance, and Young Adult Fantasy.
Ready or not, here they come!

Entangled SCANDALOUS

This was a curious Historical Romance as it definitely lived up to its imprint name (scandalous!), and for the times it is set in, we're talking bursting into flames of desire in lieu of fanning!  The whole story was interesting and unique.  Jules living the life of a young man instead of the woman she is, not by her own choice.  James returning from seemingly beyond the grave only to be so changed by the experience that London life doesn't hold the same appeal.  Their observant natures out each other to explosive ends, and yet once you see them together, there is no mistake that they were meant to be.  Following his somewhat return to his former life, and her eventual "rebirth" of sorts to the ton was well worth any hiccups they experienced along the way...but beware, it is most definitely for adult readers because WHEW!  I'll tell you this...it will definitely give you a new perspective on scents!  😋

Innovative Magic (Audiobook)
The Hybrid Magic Chronicles, Book 2
by

This was the second installment in a series that I've been reading/following for years.  The story is immersive, the characters relateable, the challenges realistic, and the tale being told, original.  I loved the first, so when I saw a call for Beta Readers of the THIRD...yes, not the one I'm actually talking about today...my hand was definitely in the air!  The thing is, I had missed the second release, so I had a little catching up to do, but my jove, author Cristy Bowlin had it covered!  I was gifted an audiobook edition of the second release, and dove right in.

Now, I talk more about narrators in the next post (keep reading after this one), but I will say it took me a bit to get into the story because I was battling with the narrator.  He didn't have a bad voice, it just wasn't what my mind was picturing for the characters.  It happens...however, once the story got rolling, it didn't matter in the least because I was back with my "friends" battling the Defenders of the True Four (*mutters*  ignorant simpletons ) as they raced to rescue Theo from the clutches of Florella.  Oh my word!  Talk about an epic adventure!  The thing is...we get to know her a little better through Theo's experience, and the eventual sharing of her history, whether she wanted to or not.  There's always a reason behind why the villain became the villain, and the light shown on her past in this tale certainly makes you rethink some judgments cast on her.  Anywho, suffice it to say, I had a grand adventure, and then followed it up with BOOK THREE which..I shan't be telling you about right now, but STAY TUNED because it'll be coming soon, and you won't want to miss out!

I've gotten more into audiobooks these past two years.  I still prefer my hardcopy, but there is definitely a time and place for other formats, including this one.  The thing about audiobooks though, the narrator can make or break a story.  Yup.  As much as it should be about the tale being told not the cover, title, or narrative, for me it makes a BIG difference...to the point I won't buy or listen to one I can't really feel a connection with. This one...GOLDEN!

The duel narrators worked like a charm and those that voiced both sides were spot on for the characters.  They really brought the story to life, making it more daytime tv drama than simply another contemporary tale.  I was drawn into the story, feeling for January's plight even when it seemed more Hilton-esque than heroine, and Enrique's challenge of growing his business, while dealing with a surface socialite.  Their witty banter, ability to drive each other crazy, and eventual irresistible connection gave the story SPARK, while the events playing out made them human.  I dare you not to laugh at their antics, or get caught up in the tension!  Bet you can't!  😉

So, this one had me in the mindset of Last of the Talons excepted the story doesn't move forward nearly as fast.  Allow me to explain.  There is a lot hidden from Narra...A LOT...and whether or not it was for her own good was beside the point.  She NEEDED to know.  It explained SO MUCH and would have stopped SO MUCH TROUBLE, except then she also wouldn't have been able to try and stop same said trouble from happening.  Yes, a conundrum indeed, but there certainly would have been less death, less harm, less ridicule, less breaking of her spirit and confusion...but perhaps, in this case, it allowed her to feel the one thing she seems to be missing in her past lives...love.  Oh yes, there are past lives to contend with here as the culture is rich and deep, and while it shows that strength of traditions, it also reminds us that lies build an unsteady foundation that only need the right amount of pressure at the right time to crack.  THIS is the right time.  THIS is the right moment.  THIS is Narra's chance to not only accomplish what she set out to do, but perhaps save the world.

Before you get your hopes up, there is A LOT of heartbreak.  A LOT.  There are characters that she forgives (which I would not have), forgets (which I'd love to), and dispatches (which I would have gladly held the blade).  There are loves she finds (unexpected!), loses (totally expected), and remembers anew (can't spoil this one!).  There is friendship and betrayal, hope and despair, ultimate highs and gut wrenching lows, but all the while, you are constantly gathering what has been, what is now, and what might be.  My word of advice...PAY ATTENTION.  Oh, and can I have book two...please?

Alright guys, another one for the adults only crowd...mostly for the verbiage, but there are definitely a few scenes as well.  Virgil thought he was getting his own version of a mail order bride.  What he got was Marigold, the sister of the potential bride who was in a tight spot, and took a chance.  She's not expecting marriage...been there, done that...but is looking for security, stability, and a place to call home.  Far be it from her to turn down the chance presented, even if it wasn't intended for her at the time, and try to make the most of it.  The sparks are felt right from the start, even if neither wants to lose their heart.  Sometimes life takes the driver's seat and you are simply the passenger.  We get to see Marigold adjust to the wilderness lifestyle, making a name for herself among the miners/men (but not in that way!), and endearing herself to his three children (they were so sweet!).  It wasn't an easy way of life, nor did it offer all the comforts of a typical home sweet home, but they say when you're truly in love, when you're truly happy, it matters not where you lay your head to rest, but with whom you are surrounded.  This is definitely a gold rush to take a chance on!

Kerrigan Byrne & Cynthia St. Aubin
Release Date:  03/28/23

Okay, so we're back in the land of unique stories for adults only, and this one has both in spades.  There's plenty of talk around inclusive books, and being able to see yourself in a story.  This one covers so many bases, it pretty much rounds them like a pro ball player, if you couldn't tell from the extended title listed over on Bookbub.  It's grumpy-sunshine, yes...but it also has characters with PTSD and lifelong physical ailments/conditions, wannabe octogenarians with a penchant for down and dirty talk, overbearing wannabe boyfriends and their mother's who can't keep their nose out of things, loss of family and freedoms, and challenges up the wazoo.

Book lover's will be drawn to the storyline of a bookstore owner challenged with keeping her store HER store while entertaining the notion of her phone customer turning into something more, but be sideswiped by everything else that comes their way...or at least I was.  I admit, the banter was ON from the word go.  There's not a chapter that doesn't have innuendo or hidden meanings buzzing just below he surface.  I'll also admit to having to go back and read the synopsis while I was reading because I was really feeling like there was a paranormal twist just waiting to pop up somewhere, but SURPRISE...there's not, or not exactly.  I'll let you figure that out yourself, but what there is is a man who needs someone that understands his challenges, tries to help, but accepts the limitations there.  What there is is a woman who needs someone to see her for who she is not what she happens to have, and allows her to do what she can do, while giving support when needed.  The big twists that occur in the storyline were expected, but still a surprise.  The BIGGER surprise was the intensity of the adults only moments...which could be a little much for some readers. Suffice it to say it's not a plain and simple Contemporary or Grumpy-Sunshine Romance, but one with a HEAVY dose of spice!

Innovative Magic - Chapter 1

Growing up, when Elara read stories about princesses and royal courts, she never imagined everything to be so impersonal. The employees of the palace acted like automatons in her presence. She couldn’t help but wonder if they saw her as an outsider and resented her for adding more work to their daily schedule. Elara was no noble. She was no one at all in this society.
Every day Elara was surrounded by countless servants and guards who were there to help her at a moment’s notice, yet they hardly said a word to her. First thing in the morning, a young woman in a pristine white uniform came to her room to open her windows and help her get dressed. Then an older woman wearing an apron came up from the kitchens with Elara’s breakfast.
On days when Elara was busy training inside of the palace, she would see different sets of servants at lunch, tea time, dinner, and bed time. She sometimes didn’t recognize them from one day to the next. Most nights, only a single servant would help her undress and fluff her pillows before bed. However, two or three times a week, four additional servants would attend to her by drawing a hot bath. Then while everyone in the guest wing slept, there would be guards posted outside their doors all night.
If Elara wanted to spend her day outside of the palace, two guards escorted her wherever she went. Elara felt like she had a constant shadow when she tried to explore the city. Finely-dressed nobles never seemed to notice the guards, but children playing in the street would clear out the moment they saw Elara and her entourage. Merchants assumed she must be wealthy and would politely call out to her offering their wares. If they knew who she really was, where she was from, they might have sneered at her.
The guards were Bennet’s idea, an extra precaution for all of his students in case any Defenders had made their way into the city of Tranton. Elara knew Bennet just wanted to keep them all safe, but having her own personal guards felt excessive. There weren’t any Defender pamphlets circulating around the city, and the few times she had heard the Defenders mentioned by locals in conversation, it was to condemn them.
When Elara first arrived at the palace in the winter, she was still struggling to learn the Trantonian language and frequently had to ask Lilith to translate for her when people spoke too quickly. One day they were walking behind two noblewomen in the park next to the palace. Elara’s ears perked up when she recognized the Trantonian word for defender.
“What are they saying?” she had whispered to Lilith.
The younger girl hesitated before mumbling in Scransean, “That woman called the Defenders ‘mad zealots.’” Lilith nodded in the direction of the second woman. “And that woman said, ‘What else do you expect from a country with such primitive views about magic?’”
Elara’s cheeks had burned in anger and shame. She pulled up her scarf to hide her face and didn’t speak for the rest of the walk. Lilith didn’t seem to know what to say either. Thankfully, by the start of spring Elara had learned enough Trantonian to speak fluently, so she no longer needed Lilith to translate for her.
Elara rarely heard derogatory comments about her home country after that day at the park. Lilith had assured her that such views were in the minority. While cultural beliefs regarding magic in Trantonia and Scransee had long been different, unification efforts were working. Both languages were taught in schools throughout the Deravine Commonwealth, and people regularly crossed the border for trade and commerce. Yet one thing that they mercifully did not share was the recruitment efforts of the Defenders. If the Defenders weren’t a legitimate threat in Trantonia, then Elara and her friends could be safe here. She chewed her lip, wondering how long that safety would last.
