Today, we're taking a moment to look back on the week and reflect not only on the fun we've had, but the fun still to come...sooner than you may even think.  (HINT:  Keep reading!)  Let's see, yesterday we joined the cover reveal celebration for LM Preston's second book in the Bandits series coming in 2014 AND we also took a look at the first book in the Nu Haven trilogy by Raiza Denise.  Wednesday, we had a little teaser fun.  Tuesday, we learned about an organization helping to ensure life goes on with precocious Little Lily.  Monday...well, Monday brings us full circle to today's post...whose title I borrowed from their motto of sorts.  How so?  You're about to find out.

Monday, we took a peek inside a curious little book that may seem familiar to you; perfectly acceptable reaction seeing as it is the third volume in the series and the first two I reviewed here in years past (click 1 or 2 for glimpse into the past).  This happened to be the recently published volume 3 and as good as the first two were, this one measures up equally.  Haven't had a chance to experience their light-on-words-but-heavy-on-impact wonders?  Here's a few samples to help you on your way...

Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the place to be when the weather starts cooling down and you're looking for a great read to keep you inside while letting your mind explore the world.  No worries; we've got you covered.

It's Monday and to get things started on the right foot, I thought we might delve right into a review of a title that arrived just last week.  What can I say, it CALLED to me...and I KNOW it will to each of you as well.  It's a collection of short stories, correction, TINY stories that literally span no more than a two pages but bring the bookish magic with every word, every pen stroke that hits the page...and if you're lucky, your work could be in the next one.  Ready to READ ALL ABOUT IT?  Here goes.  Today's book of choice is...

There's really no way to describe this because although you do READ the works within, it really has to be EXPERIENCED.  

Each spread includes the barest of words with an illustration.  Sometimes that which is depicted is intense, other times it's as subtle a whisper in the wind....but EVERY time, it makes an impact and more often than not, remarkably so.  It's a project that starts with a thought but takes shape after the collaborative efforts of MANY artists intertwine to create something whole out of the masses.  It makes you think.  It takes your breath away.  It brings out the simplistic beauty of a book while reminding us to choose our words wisely as they speak greater volumes than the intentions they initially were uttered with and long after our voice is silenced.  

My favorite?  Hard decision as there are SO MANY awesome combinations of image and word to choose from but one of my favorites would have to be this one from thedustdancetoo ....

"i want desperately to press you between the pages of a book,"

Oh Readers! We're not in Kansas anymore!

It's Monday!  Whoop-de-do, right?  Wrong!  Monday is one of those days that's gotten a bad wrap simply because it falls at both the beginning and end, sorta like twilight but day-of-the-week wise in lieu of hour wise.  Not to worry, we're gonna get yours started off on the right foot with a great big dose of imagination and to think it all starts with a storm (*glances outside at gray sky*).  Today's book of choice is...

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

You know the story, a little girl wishing that she could make it over the rainbow to escape the gray tinged life she leads at present only to be confronted with the fact that life may appear greener on the other side (and the whole "technicolor" thing actually makes it so) but "there's no place like home" after all is said and done.  Good stuff...but if you've been nodding your head along in agreement to my brief synopsis there, you my friend have not in fact read the story.  *cue dramatic music*

I had actually read the story a few years back but when I saw this new illustrated edition hitting store shelves, I knew I had to check it out.  More on those pics in a moment, let's talk story.  The best thing I can say for those that have only seen the movie is you can keep the images of the primary characters in your mind's eye for placeholders in the story if you wish...but that's about it.  Yep.  True story.

The land of the Munchkins is far less munchkin-ny and Glinda sparkles WAY less than her supposed taffeta gown though she is still in fact a powerful and very good witch.  The infamous shoes are NOT red, the flying monkeys don't actually work for the Wicked Witch on a full time basis, in fact...the Wicked Witch herself plays a very small role in comparison to her betrayal in the movie though Dorothy's journey is still fraught with dangers at every turn.  Even the characters themselves are presented in different shades of their personalities.  Movie wise, they are weaker and seeking the wizard to actually gain what they lack; book wise, you can really see they've had each "thing" the whole time but merely needed something or someone to point it out (except Dorothy, unless she was hiding a balloon in her back pocket).  Quite the contrast but DEFINITELY worth the journey down the road of yellow bricks to discover all there is to see.  Now back to this edition in particular...

What makes this edition stand out from the rest?  The illustrations (and the hardbound packaging, which I
adore!).  It's not your typical lush images that we've come to expect from this story.  They are a bit more bleak, a bit more drab and yet they work well with all they depict.  From Dorothy's sunny face which is given an extra hint of color in an otherwise fairly monotone landscape to Toto's adorable little self with spunky attitude to spare, from the uncovering of the grand humbug to the reality of the poppy field not the fantasy (though this is a fantasy...right?  *-*) and all the way to the melting of the witch herself, it's a happy marriage between story and image.  I mean really, who would have thought that the limited color palate used would work so well and that despite the faces of our stout-hearted friends being something other than expected, they'd still be recognizable as themselves beyond a shadow of a doubt.

In conclusion, a worthy read indeed for the seasoned Oz visitor as well as those just journeying past the colors that arc across the sky.  It makes sharing the story with a new generation a grand adventure once again not only in text but also in visual aids.  Though read by both girls and boys for ages now, I can see this one garnering some additional attention from the fellas as the illustrator's style was developed originally in the skateboarding culture.  Definitely a great edition to add to your collection and one that will hold its own against the scores of others already out there.

Wayne of Gotham by Tracy Hickman

Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the place to be when you're in the mood for something good that won't spoil your appetite.

So, today's post is being sent via my newish Tabby...no, not a cat but a tablet-type PC I received last Christmas and I'm just now getting around to exploring it. Yup...better late than never, right? Anywho...the reason for the revelation...in case you see any odd typos, blame the user AND the method of submission, okay? Moving on...

Now for today's post where venturing where this reader has never gone before...are you scared? You shouldn't be...it was a really enjoyable read and one that I think many of you might enjoy as well. It's from the realm of Fantasy and features a hero many of us know and love...the Batman. Ready to read all about it? Without further ado, today's book of choice is...



Wayne of Gotham

This is the story of a hero made super by technology and tenacity. It tells us just what happens when justice is not enough and wrong is found no matter where you turn. We get to explore the younger days of Wayne's father,Thomas, and see not only how he became the shrewd businessman he was but the dark past of both him AND Martha that not even Batman was able to uncover. It was his first case, the death of his parents, and one he's never been fully able to put to rest...until now. Thanks to a dramatic game unfolding, the events that led up to that nigbt will finally be revealed. Be careful what you ask for Bruce for among "the truth" may be truths best left in peace.

Even a non-enthusiast super hero fan like me (as in I know of them, but rarely partake of their tales) found this story rather enjoyable! You've got a full cast of villians making their voices heard and if you've even occasionally read or watched the cartoon series, you'll recognize the varied cast from Scarface to Spellbinder to the Joker...it's a reunion of the worst sort but the real kicker is a BIG blast from the past in more ways than one...suffice it to say that I doubt you'll see this one coming. As for the side of good...

Good old Bruce is up to his old tricks; saving dameselles in distress and showing the citizens of Gotham that not everything that goes bump in the night is out to get you...only some of them. I really like the direction his character takes; the carefully constructed facsade arranged just so as to give him yet another face to hide behind. He plays the part and plays it well, maybe even TOO well to some degree. It's easy to lose yourself when you're constantly filling the shoes of another. Moving on...

All in all, I'd say it was a remarkable adventure with the caped crusader that will leave you eaiting with baited breath as to the final ending. The story unfolds at a steady pace, revealing sides to people and events otherwise left unguessed...one BIG surprise involves Alfred, dating back to his father and his father before him; let's just say I'd stay on his good side if I were you. Its got something for the hardcore fans (learned thanks to a tweep why he's referred to as "the Batman"...old school reference to classic stories) as well as those merely curious to try something new with an old friend. Rest assured, you will not leave this adventure un-entertained.

Recommended read for teen through adult readers...come one, come all and she what's in store for the Batman this time around.
