BOOK SPOTLIGHT: Unexpected Prisoner by Robert Wiseman & Cara Lopez Lee

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're shining the BOOK SPOTLIGHT on a title very befitting the recent U.S. holiday.  It's a Memoir of six years in one man's life spent as a POW (Prisoner of War) in Vietnam.  Hard to imagine, even harder to survive, yet survive he did and now he's helping to shed some light on what transpired behind enemy lines.  Ladies and gentleman, veteran's and their supporters alike, give your loved ones a great big hug and settle in for a look at today's spotlight title...

About the book...

“A riveting first-person account of a six-year Prisoner of War in the Hanoi Hilton. “

When Lieutenant Robert Wideman's plane crashed on a bombing run in the Vietnam War, he feared falling into enemy hands. Although he endured the kind of pain that makes people question humanity, physical torture was not his biggest problem. During six years as a prisoner of war, he saw the truth behind Jean-Paul Sartre's words: "Hell is other people." Unexpected Prisoner explores a POW's struggle with enemies and comrades, Vietnamese interrogators and American commanders, his lost dreams and ultimately himself.

Q&A with Robert Wiseman

You have a very unique story - and one someone couldn’t really tell unless they experienced it first-hand. What inspired you to tell this story?

My two sons and six grandchildren - they’re the most important thing to me. I wanted to leave them something that had meaning. After four years of writing, I had my story down on paper about my time in a North Vietnamese prison camp, but nothing else. One of my daughters-in-law said I needed to put some of my life before and after prison into the book. A Colorado Publisher connected me  with author and editor Cara Lopez Lee in 2014, and she helped me piece things together. We published Unexpected Prisoner  two years later.

What do you think will surprise readers most about Unexpected Prisoner?

Even given my experience, I  think readers will be surprised at my attitude toward the North Vietnamese. I don’t really have bad feelings toward them, because the treatment could have been so much worse.

How so?

When I came home from the war,  I read everything I could on POWs and the Vietnam War. I learned that since the beginning of time, POWs have been treated very, very badly.
For example - In World War II, the Japanese chopped off two American heads for every mile of the Bataan death march. Twenty-seven to forty percent of American prisoners held by the Japanese died in captivity. In our revolutionary war, 20,000 colonial prisoners died in the holds of British ships in Brooklyn and Boston harbors.  Five times as many colonists died on those ships as died on the battlefield. Of the 5 million Russian prisoners held by the Germans in World War II, 3 million died in captivity. The Russians captured 95,000 German troops at the battle of Stalingrad, and only 5,000 of those prisoners ever came home. Thirteen thousand union soldiers died at Andersonville within 14 months during our own civil war - that’s one soldier every 45 minutes!  Our tour guide at Andersonville took 45 minutes to do the tour.

Only 7 American prisoners died in Hanoi the whole time I was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. Only 28 prisoners died in North Vietnam. If you compare the treatment we received from the North Vietnamese with the treatment POWs received from their captors in other wars, ours  looks pretty good.

Robert Wideman was born in Montreal, grew up in upstate New York, and has dual U.S.-Canadian citizenship. During the Vietnam War, he flew 134 missions for the U.S. Navy and spent six years as a prisoner of war. He earned a master’s degree in finance from the Naval Postgraduate School. After retiring from the Navy, he graduated from the University of Florida College of Law, practiced law in Florida and Mississippi, and became a flight instructor. He holds a commercial pilot’s license with an instrument rating.

He belongs to Veterans Plaza of Northern Colorado and lives in Fort Collins near his two sons and six grandchildren.

Watch video excerpts from Wideman’s public speaking event at the Kiwanis Club in Northern Colorado to see how the author is connecting with other POWs and Veterans.

BLOG TOUR: The Wishing World by Todd Fahnestock

Hi guys and gals!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're joining a Roger Charlie blog tour featuring a soon to be released title that you won't want to miss.  It finds itself at home in the Children's Fiction/Fantasy genre and when I say that it will have your imagination will running wild, that is NOT an understatement.  The fact that it can provoke readers imaginations is one thing but within the story world itself, that provocation, that POWER, had consequences far beyond what you might at first perceive.  So clear your minds and be prepared, we're going on an adventure!  Today's ebook of choice is...

The Wishing World

by
Todd Fahnestock
Starscape

About the book...
In the Wishing World, dreams are real. You can transform into your own hero, find wild and whimsical friends, and wield power as great as your imagination. But Lorelei doesn't know about any of that. All she knows is that a monster took her family.

It happened during a camping trip one year ago. Hiding inside the tent, she saw shadows, tentacles and a strange creature. By the time she got up the courage to crawl outside, the monster--and Lorelei's mom, dad, and brother--were gone.

Lorelei is determined to find her family. When she accidentally breaks into the Wishing World, she discovers a way. It's a land more wonderful than she could have imagined, a land of talking griffons, water princesses, and cities made of sand, where Lorelei is a Doolivanti--a wish-maker--who can write her dreams into existence.

There's only one problem: the monster is a Doolivanti, too. What he wishes also comes true, and he's determined to shove Lorelei out, keep her family, and make the whole Wishing World his. To save them, Lorelei must find the courage to face him, or her next wish may be her last.

Doolivanti, griffon, eternal seas, Squeak... and the list goes on. This book is neither short on characters, nor imagination, and they work wonders to build a story that you'll long to get lost between the pages of...I know I did, and now that I've emerged, allow me to shed a little light on my journey.

What begins in a rush of memories shared, familial loss felt, and the innocent wishes of one little girl made so strongly that the very rules of the natural world consider bending to her will, grows into a quest unlike any other.  Lorelei is our leading lady and though young in age, she is so much stronger, and wiser than she even knows.  Though her family was taken from her, she never really gave up on them...good thing too because otherwise what happens after her wish of all wishes hits the universe would be unfathomable.  You see, sometimes wishes can come true, but even so, it doesn't mean they were meant to play out the way we expected.  Lorelei wants her family back, but in order to possibly accomplish the impossible, she's going to have to face the darkest darkness of another's heart, while making some tough decisions within her own.  Her choices affect more than just herself and her family, but a whole world of wildly fantastical creatures and creations.  Will she be strong enough to preserve this world of imaginations gone wild while still answering her heart's desire?  Wouldn't you like to know...  *smirk*

Oh come on, you knew I wasn't going to spoil it for you and seriously, I couldn't forgive myself if I did!  The cast of characters is vast and wonderful.  The connections they have to each other and to Lorelei are unexpected, yet work beautifully.  I must say, a favorite character of mine was most definitely Squeak.  Yes, he is a mouse.  No, we can't understand him, though others can, but that doesn't make his observations, opinions, and direction any less important (or spot on!)...plus there is a reason for that lack of understanding that we come to understand later on along with Lorelei.  Speaking out her, I gotta say, she was a gem herself!  I was at first confused by her shedding of the "Loremaster" name and image when she came to The Wishing World but gradually, it all made sense.  Just one of many mysteries that reveal themselves by book's end...and what an end it is!  Satisfying and yet room to grow; I wonder...

In conclusion, it was one fascinating rush of a read! Filled with all the magical characters you can stand, and capturing so much within its words while leaving mountains still left to explore, this is one read that you'll definitely want to explore on more than one occasion.  It works as a standalone but most readers will still be clamoring for more... *joins the hordes*

Recommended read for Children's Fiction fans of all ages.  All you need is an interest, and a heaping dose of imagination, and you'll be sailing through the "e" or "tree" pages faster than you can riddle through a Flimflam's poetic nonsense.

(read/sing to Summer Lovin' from GREASE)

Summer readin' had me a blast!
Summer readin' pages go FAST!
Made some friends BOOK crazy like me!
Created to read lists...no less than three!
Summer days driftin' away, but OH...
THOSE BOOKISH NIGHTS!

That's right!
It's that time of year again.
Time to put away the pencils and textbooks, in exchange for late movie nights, long days in the sun, and reading JUST FOR FUN!  Who's with me?  ^-^  But, wonder of wonders...how to decide just WHAT to read?

It can't be just ANYTHING.  It's got to be exciting and interesting with love interests that make your knees quake, besties we forever compare our own "crew" to, and baddies that make us raise our clenched fists in defiance of their tyranny.  Yes, it must have it all and then some.  So, got any ideas yet?  No?  Yes?  Somewhere in-between it all?  NO worries.  I'm here to help along with a plethora of amazing author talent and publishing house know how to help bring a the spotlight to a few that just might be your best friend for a few days, or few hours this season.  So grab your beach towel, some sunscreen, and pull up a chair, it's time to dive into a pool of bookish fun!  Today's category is...

YOUNG ADULT!

This categories name is a misnomer as it makes one believe it is only for those in their teen years, and believe it or not, I've seen it scare a few adults off of a title they REALLY wanted to read.  No, it wasn't me...I'm not scared to read outside my age bracket, up nor down, and I hope YOU aren't either.  What the genre really means is that it's suitable for a teenage audience but not ONLY to them, with a wide variety of sub genres, normally limited on the foul language and intense erotic scenes, and LOADS of fun.  The titles we're highlighting today play by the rules remarkably well, but they're also not afraid to break them in the best ways possible.  Ladies and gents, let's get this book party started!

Today, we've a few titles from author Amalie Howard that you'll want to make room for this summer...

The Cruentus series

Bloodspell Bloodcraft Silver IPPY

Consisting of Bloodspell and Bloodcraft, this matched set is all about magic, power, and dark DARK secrets.  It's not a series I've read, but it IS on my own summer reading list and I am definitely curious to dive between the epages.  The synopsis talks about Victoria turning seventeen and getting much more than a new car for her birthday, while possibly losing everything and everyone that really matters at the same time.  If we peek at book two, we're faced with challenges from all sides including a choose-them-or-me moment with witches and vampires thrown in the mix.  I mean, it sounds like a paranormal showdown that's not to be missed...and I certainly don't intend to...

The Riven Chronicles

AlmostGirl_cover  FallenPrince_cover

Starting with The Almost Girl and following with The Fallen Prince, this is not your average YA duo.  Android wars and lost siblings, orders from royalty and finding the strength to be what you choose, not what you're designed to be.  From the outside looking in, it sounds like this set is a perfect mash up of sci-fi/fantasy fun with enough humanity built in to sustain those that may be reading outside the box.  I must say, though robots are not really my "thing". those covers do a great job in conveying the characters portrayed as well as the ultimate battle they are facing from within.

About the author...

Amalie Headshot

AMALIE HOWARD grew up in Trinidad & Tobago where she spent most of her childhood with her nose buried in a book or running around barefoot, shimmying up mango trees and dreaming of adventure. 25 countries, surfing with sharks and several tattoos later, she has traded in bungee jumping in China for writing the adventures she imagines instead. She isn’t entirely convinced which takes more guts.

An aspiring writer from a young age, Amalie’s poem “The Candle,” written at age twelve, was published in a University of Warwick journal. At fifteen, she was a recipient of a Royal Commonwealth Society Essay Award (a global youth writing competition). A Colby College graduate, she completed simultaneous Honors Theses in both French and International Studies, and graduated Summa Cum Laude/Phi Beta Kappa. At Colby, she was cited for research and criticism in Raffael Scheck’s article, “German Conservatism and Female Political Activism in the Early Weimar Republic,” and his subsequent book, Mothers of the Nation. She also received a distinction in English Literature from the University of Cambridge (A-levels) as well as a certificate in French Literature from the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris, France. Traveling the globe, she has worked as a research assistant, marketing representative, teen speaker and global sales executive.
