BLOG TOUR: Twisted by Bonnie M. Hennessy - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!

Hi guys and gals!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're proud to be hosting a stop along the Tribute Books Blog Tour for a self-published title of Fairy Tale and Fantasy that will grab your attention and simply NOT LET GO.  Sometimes self-pubs get a bad name but I'm telling you, this one is definitely one of the greats!  Don't believe me?  Well then, I guess I'll have to prove it to you.  So, if you would be so kind, allow me to introduce you to your next great reading adventure...

About the book...
An old tale tells the story of how a little man named Rumpelstiltskin spun straw into gold and tricked a desperate girl into trading away her baby. But that’s not exactly how it happened.

The real story began with a drunken father who kept throwing money away on alcohol and women, while his daughter, Aoife, ran the family farm on her own. When he gambled away everything they owned to the Duke, it was up to her to spin straw into gold to win it all back.

With her wits and the help of a magical guardian, she outsmarted the Duke and saved the day.

Well almost… Her guardian suddenly turned on Aoife and sent her on a quest to find his name, the clues to which were hidden deep in the woods, a moldy dungeon, and a dead woman’s chamber.

This is not the tale of a damsel in distress, but a tenacious, young woman who solved a mystery so great that not even the enchanted man who spun straw into gold could figure it out.

Not until Aoife came along.

If you follow me on GoodReads, you know that I was a bit lax in updating my progress made as I was reading this one.  Sorry, not sorry.  The necessity to actually READ this story versus update you on it, won out. Yes...it was THAT GOOD.

An unusual take on Rumpelstiltskin but highly enjoyable! As anyone who has read various fairytale redos can tell you, some are more hit than miss while others are more miss than hit.  This one is definitely a hit...bullseye, dead center, right for the heart of the reader in the best ways possible.  Aoife is a headstrong, willful young woman, but with a heart of gold... even if she might not be able to spin straw into that particular element which everyone wants to line their pockets with, at least not in the sense that they expect. She is a mastermind at turning little into something and something into everything, though it is a talent set she learned by necessity versus pure desire.  Let's just say that her home life is anything but ideal...and yet in spite of that dreadful situation, she still remains faithful to her family, or more specifically her ailing sister.  Yes, it is this young girl's welfare that keeps Aoife's nose to the grindstone and her heart tethered to all that surrounds.  Good thing too because otherwise she may have been swept up by some rather enticing dark magic.  Hey, freedom for a girl in her day and age isn't anything to scoff at, but then again the price of said freedom can be too great even when at first it seemed without strings.  Funny how often times bad things masquerade as good ...well, funny in a general speaking manner but not when it comes to real life.  Good luck, Aoife...you'll need your wits about you to reach a happy ending of any sort...

So, I could really go on and on and on and on and...well, you get the picture, because that's generally what happens when I really like a book.  I mean REALLY like.  In an effort to not spoil the story though, I shall reign myself in, but only just.  The writing is fluid, the story without a hitch, and the details handled with a well practiced hand.  The backstory is just rich enough, the revelations veiled so carefully as to only have their full impact come forth when the time is right, and the characters are made so that no matter their heart of hearts, you feel for each and every one on some level.  I adored our leading lady for everything she was as well as all that she saw in others, for better or worse.  The Duke and the "little man" I both loved and loathed at different points, but never did I wish to fully toss their outcomes to the wind.  Even Mauve (more of a mother than her own ever was!), Fiona (a kind soul with a wicked secret!), and Ena (lived by her tricks and fell to them too!) were memorable for the parts they played.

In the end, I can only say this...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!  It was unlike any retelling of the classic tale I've read before and filled with so much heart, magic, and unbridled love despite the ugliness that abounds, that one can't help but be as captured by the wonder within.  Bookmarks up to the author for this stunning release!  Here's hoping there is more from her to come in the future.

About the author...

Bonnie grew up a shy, quiet girl who the teachers always seated next to the noisy boys because they knew she was too afraid to talk to anyone. She always had a lot she wanted to say but was too afraid to share it for fear she might die of embarrassment if people actually noticed her. Somewhere along the line, perhaps after she surprised her eighth grade class by standing up to a teacher who was belittling a fellow student, she realized that she had a voice and she didn’t burst into flames when her classmates stared at her in surprise.

Not long after that, she began spinning tales, some of which got her into trouble with her mom. Whether persuading her father to take her to the candy store as a little girl or convincing her parents to let her move from Los Angeles to Manhattan to pursue a career at eighteen as a ballet dancer with only $200 in her pocket, Bonnie has proven that she knows how to tell a compelling story.

Now she spends her time reading and making up stories for her two children at night. By day she is an English teacher who never puts the quiet girls next to the noisy boys and works hard to persuade her students that stories, whether they are the ones she teaches in class or the ones she tells to keep them from daydreaming, are better escapes than computers, phones, and social media.

Hi guys and gals!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

About the book...
Can a woman mired deep in the throes of grief have her heart and soul rallied by a therapy dog named Prozac who possesses supernatural wisdom and a canine Mensa IQ?

Meredith Mancuso is depressed. Ever since the death of her fiancé, she has shrunk from the world. Even with her successful writing career, she's not motivated to work. When her sister, Monica, begs for a favor, Meredith wants nothing more than to say no. But she’s ultimately roped into pet-sitting an orphaned Yorkshire terrier named Prozac.

Blessed with spiritual wisdom and a high IQ, Prozac is an active pet therapy dog. To heal broken-hearted Meredith, he rallies his fan club at Evergreen Gardens, an independent living facility, where he visits each week.

Prozac and the community of resilient older folks challenged by losses of their own propel Meredith, often against her will, back into the land of the living. Meredith learns that most people carry some sort of burden, but it's still possible to find meaning, purpose, and joy—and even love—along the way.

THE THING IS—a perfect read for fans of General Fiction, Contemporary Fiction, Romantic Comedy, and Dog and Pet Lovers!

This is the story of one four-legged friend's desire to see his name in lights.  Okay, not really...but that IS on his bucket list IF he accomplishes the latest assignment given to him by the Canine Dispatch Board.  What?  You've never heard of them?  They are in charge of all the Spirit Guide Dog arrangements, from well-being to training, best matched placements to opportunities to grow, and they take their jobs seriously, as our dear friend Prozac is about to find out.

Image result for pawprints on a heart

Prozac...I know, I know.  How in the WORLD does a dog end up with a name like that?!  Let's just say the lady in charge of this litter was married to a pharmacist and call it a closed case, okay?  Anywho, he entered this world with his eyes on the prize imagining time spent with his elderly charge was going to be a cakewalk, and while initially true that whole "to be determined" part of the case file he initially read should have been questioned a little harder.  The TBD in this case is one Meredith Mancuso who comes into Prozac's life so unwillingly it hurts...as in my sides hurt from LAUGHING.  Only dog owners can attest to the truthfulness the author embedded in Meredith and Prozac's first days.  The unexpected swirly, the race through the house stark naked trying to catch a sopping wet pup, the unfortunate step into a warm present left behind, and oh so many more.  Seriously, Meredith may not have been laughing, but I was on her behalf.  *ahem*  Anyway...

Push comes to shove and Meredith seems stuck with her four legged companion for the time being. It's okay, she's a big girl...she can handle it...right?  Right...umm, did I fail to mention the dog as an UBER active social life that's going to impinge on her daily attempt at writing schedule and force her to associate with strangers on a daily basis JUST because the darn dog is so cute and friendly?  Yeah, I knew I forgot something.  Will this thrust into social land crack her well insulated shell wide open or will all the ill-gotten attention force her to burrow deeper within herself?  If Prozac lives up to his name and demeanor, she won't have much of a choice in the end...

Image result for alive

The alternating chapters within the book allow readers to get to know both Meredith AND Prozac that much better.  We can see just why Meredith is the way she is, stunted in life, closed off from others, and perfectly content to live that way.  She has a violent heartache inflicted upon her that did some massive scarring, but the truth of the matter is...SHE'S STILL HERE.  She's still alive...she's just forgotten how to live.  Enter our little canine companion, Prozac, who seems to only be missing a little red cape.  Okay, that's not entirely true because in HIS chapters, we get inside his mind to discover just how he REALLY feels about all those visits, how much puppy intuition he actually possesses, and just what it takes to capture his puppy attention.  They play off each other well and despite some missteps, you couldn't ask for a better match.  Now, these two are far from the only characters (term used literally AND in quotes) worth a mention, but you'll have to get to know Razzle-Dazzle-Radcliffe (aka David...and does anyone else notice how the name is akin to a particular boy wizard...and the magic connection?), Judge Thea (oh, that woman!  So coniving!), and the rest of the Evergreen Gardens gang on your own time.  Trust me, it's worth the personal introduction.

To conclude, a book I enjoyed from cover to cover with characters that were easy to lose yourself in and a fur baby with heart and snark to spare.  It'd make a great addition to your summer reading list to wile away an afternoon in the sun, or tucked into your favorite reading nook with a fur baby by your side.  I will "warn" readers that tissues may be needed at some point in the work, but believe me when I say that it's all sorted out in the end.  Open your hearts to this lovable pup and take in the lessons he and his human charges have to offer.  Recommended read for Women's Fiction, and Romantic Comedy fans...the romance is VERY light but the heartfelt passion of the emotions burns bright.

BLOG TOUR: Wiccan Witch of the Midwest by Scott A. Lerner + GIVEAWAY!

Hi guys!
Welcome back to the site that aims to please the reader in you, Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're playing host to a Tribute Books Blog Tour starring a Paranormal Mystery/Thriller that'll have you questioning the facts left and right...the sign of a good mystery, right?  Perhaps, but I'll discuss my experience a bit more in a moment.  Let's jump right into things, as this one is hot off the presses, as we explore book four in the Samuel Roberts Thriller series...

Samuel Roberts Thriller, Book 4
by
Camel Press

About the book....
Samuel Roberts, a lawyer in Champaign, Illinois, has just moved to a new home to escape the memories of his old place—the stray body parts left by evil entities as well as traces of his relationship with Susan, who left him because he couldn’t stop risking both their lives trying to save the world. That leaves Sam free to fall in love again. Sam falls hard, suspiciously hard, for Bridget Gillis, a beautiful fortune teller who also happens to be a witch and a member of a coven. The village that encompasses the coven was founded by Bridget’s great-great aunt, also named Bridget and a dead ringer for her descendant. The new relationship quickly gets complicated. It is two days before Halloween, and Bridget is about to be tried by her fellow witches for the crime of practicing dark magic involving the blood of children. The punishment is to be burned at the stake. Bridget needs an advocate, and Sam is the perfect man for the job.

Sam brings in Bob, who is suspicious of his best buddy’s sudden passion. The two of them have until the Witching Hour on Halloween to clear Bridget’s name and find out who is killing the local children. As they comb the area for clues, quiz the locals, and take a crash course in witchcraft and Wiccan customs, Sam and Bob can’t shake the question: is Bridget a good witch or a bad witch?

Though reviewing it in November, I actually read it the same dates pretty much that it was playing out.  Creeeeppppyyyy!  *-*  But really...

It was definitely a good pick for the season, Halloween and all, considering the paranormal content, time and place it takes place, and the murder and mystery afoot.  Sam is likeable enough and a pretty big skeptic considering all the run ins he has had with other worldly beings and whatnot (all alluded to having occurred in previous installments).  Perhaps that is part of his charm, but for me...it didn't last.  Maybe if I had read the other installments, my relationship with him would have been more solid but seeing how easily he was roped into the clutches of Bridget's magic and the unending mind battle he faced between logic and witchcraft, I wasn't convinced.  Did he serve his purpose?  Yes.  Was the awkward distance between him and I the result of the spell (which one I shall not say)?  Maybe, but it's hard to say with any amount of certainty.  We just didn't mesh.  If we continue down the line of characters, I have to say Bridget was pretty darn formidable but not truly imposing until closer to the end, Bob was actually an unusual sidekick that proved truly worthy of hero status, and the rest...they leave their mark when given the limelight.  It's not often, but it happens.

Story wise, there's mystery and murder, crimes most heinous, and a plant that will scare the bejesus out of any horticulturist (truly horrible).  The path taken to uncover the truth was murky but believable though with a touch TMI on the actual craft employed; the twist towards book's end another surprise that fit well.  The only hang up for me once again came into play with Mr. Roberts.  He's a lawyer in the real world, I get it.  A duck is a duck. Here he's part detective though and his sleuthing skills though perhaps jaded once again by the spell are definitely not up to par.  There's a little detail regarding a particular painting that I questioned along the way as a possibility in solving the whole thing and he doesn't pick up on it until the last twenty pages or so.  *ahem*  Believe me, I'm no Sherlock Holmes either so I kind of felt it was a discredit to the character to have him miss something THAT obvious.  Again, having a history with him would have told me whether or not he would have normally picked that detail up but alas, it wasn't there to pull from.

In the end, though we weren't a match made in heaven, I can't say my time spent in this curious magical village just this side of Amish country didn't intrigue and enchant.  I mean the final outcome alone is enough to make the read worth your while (~shudders~), I just wish some of those "missing links" were a little smaller.  Would they be solved by starting at the series beginning?  Perhaps...but alas, that's a journey you'll have to check into on your own and report back.  (If you have or do, please stop back and share!)  As for me, I'm content with my visit and think many of you will be too.  Recommended read for adult Mystery and Thriller fans alike that enjoy a heavy dose of magic in the tales they choose to peruse; the stipulation on "adult readers" is for limited content and some violence.

BLOG TOUR: Johnnie Come Lately by Kathleen M Rodgers

Hi there!
Welcome back to the site that aims to please the reader in you, Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're joining in a Tribute Books Blog Tour already in progress starring a Women's Fiction title with a touch of mystery, a good dose of the military, and just what a lifetime of secrets can really do to a person.  Ready or not, here comes today's book of choice...

by
Kathleen M. Rodgers
9781603812153
Camel Press

About the book...
Would life have been different for Johnnie if she'd been named after a woman rather than her dead uncle? Or if her mama hadn't been quite so beautiful or flighty? The grandparents who raised her were loving, but they didn't understand the turmoil roiling within her. And they had so many, many secrets.

Why did her mama leave? Would she ever return? How did her Uncle Johnny really die? Who was her father? Now Johnnie Kitchen is a 43-year-old woman with three beautiful children, two of them grown. She has a handsome, hardworking husband who adores her, and they live in the historic North Texas town of Portion in a charming bungalow. But she never finished college and her only creative outlet is a journal of letters addressed to both the living and the dead. Although she has conquered the bulimia that almost killed her, Johnnie can never let down her guard, lest the old demons return. Or perhaps they never went away to begin with. For Johnnie has secrets of her own, and her worst fear is that the life she's always wanted--the one where she gets to pursue her own dreams--will never begin.

Not until her ghosts reveal themselves.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As you can probably tell from the synopsis, there are quite a few story lines running around this tale and what they all have in common is SECRETS.  Surprisingly, though most of the characters are harboring something, Johnnie seems to have the most or rather be connected to the most.
First there's the identity of her father, then there's her own betrayal that's been weighing on her heart for over a decade, follow that up with her grandmother's knowledge of her mother's whereabouts, and let us not forget the inner demon she fights on a daily basis that while familiar to her family, remains cloaked from the world.  That's A LOT of darkness to be carrying around your person, let alone ONE person.  No wonder her world seems to be coming apart at the seems and all because she tried to comfort her child after he did something rather less than brilliant.  *shakes head*  Just goes to show you, and it's a lesson Johnnie girl learns in spades, THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE.
Once things start coming to the light, it seems like a runaway train and just when it looks like the bottom has truly fallen out, that whisper of hope that's been floating around comes into reach.  Does it save her and her family?  Is her husband forgiving, her grandmother welcoming, her kids back on her side?  Now that's...something you'll have to read the book to find out but suffice it to say that it is the ups and downs of the every day that make this life a LIFE and true love, whether famial or heart-to-heart, can weather any storm.
To conclude, I enjoyed getting to know Johnnie, even in her darkest hours, and found her character very human.  Though I don't necessarily agree with all her choices, she beared them well and never gave up on trying to rebuild her family, her life.  Recommended read for Women's Fiction fans.
