~~~ GUEST POST ~~~
Catacombs and Criminals
by
Sherry Ellis
When you think of Paris, things that come to mind may be the Eiffel Tower, good food, fashion, and art museums. I doubt skeletons, underground cemeteries, and art thieves would pop into your head. Bubba and Squirt’s City of Bones explores some of these darker aspects of the City of Lights. While the book is a work of fiction, there are truths in the stories within the story.
Were the art thieves real?
The characters in Bubba and Squirt’s City of Bones are fictional, but the information about the Mona Lisa robbery, the heist from the Museum of Modern Art, and Picasso’s granddaughter are true.
  • Italian painter, Vincenzo Peruggia stole the Mona Lisa from the Louvre Museum in 1911. It was recovered in 1913 when he tried to sell it.
  • On May 20, 2010, an art thief stole five paintings, including a Picasso and Matisse from the Museum of Modern Art. Unfortunately, the security alarms were not working, and the security guards on duty did not notice the thief. The works are still missing, and the thief has not been caught.
  • On February 27, 2007, thieves broke into the house of Picasso’s granddaughter and stole two of his paintings. They were worth over sixty million dollars!
The Catacombs
The catacombs are an underground gravesite located in the Place Denfert-Rochareau district of Paris. This is where Bubba and Squirt arrive after being whisked through the mysterious portal. It’s also where they first meet the art thieves. A positively creepy place! Here are some facts about it:
  • The bones were once buried in the Cemetery of the Innocent in the district of Halles. When the cemetery became overcrowded, the government decided to move the bones. They chose an old stone mine.
  • On April 7, 1786, removal of the bones began and continued until 1788.
  • The site contains the remains of about six million people.
  • The catacombs were opened to the public in 1874.
If you ever visit Paris, take the time to visit this unique place. It’s an unforgettable experience!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this trivia and that you will consider checking out Bubba and Squirt’s City of Bones!
Rockstar Book Tours presents... DRAWING DEENA by Hena Khan - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!
I am thrilled to be hosting a kickoff spot on the DRAWING DEENA by Hena Khan Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out my review post, make sure to enter the giveaway, and be sure to visit the other sites participating as the tour continues for more bookish fun!
Title: DRAWING DEENA
Author: Hena Khan
Pub. Date: February 6, 2024
Publisher: Salaam Reads / Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Formats: Hardcover, eBook, Audiobook
Pages: 240
Find it: Goodreads, https://books2read.com/DRAWING-DEENA
From the award-winning author of Amina’s Voice and Amina’s Song comes a tenderhearted middle grade novel about a young Pakistani American artist determined to manage her anxiety and forge her own creative path.
Deena’s never given a name to the familiar knot in her stomach that appears when her parents argue about money, when it’s time to go to school, or when she struggles to find the right words. She manages to make it through each day with the help of her friends and the art she loves to make.
While her parents’ money troubles cause more and more stress, Deena wonders if she can use her artistic talents to ease their burden. She creates a logo and social media account to promote her mom’s home-based business selling clothes from Pakistan to the local community. With her cousin and friends modeling the outfits and lending their social media know-how, business picks up.
But the success and attention make Deena’s cousin and best friend, Parisa, start to act funny. Suddenly Deena’s latest creative outlet becomes another thing that makes her feel nauseated and unsure of herself. After Deena reaches a breaking point, both she and her mother learn the importance of asking for help and that, with the right support, Deena can create something truly beautiful.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My thoughts...

Deena was such a special young lady. She was trying to get through the hardship that can be middle school, find herself, discover her future, and manage her home life unknowingly to her parents. Curious about that last part? It's a common struggle taken on by many young hearts while the parental units don't quite realize their burdens are being shouldered inadvertently elsewhere when the discussions turn to raised voices, the concerns turn to worries, and the hesitations turn into missed chances. We're talking about that thing that makes the world go round... money.

In family units, it's generally the adults responsible for the procurement of and continual monitoring of the finances, but sensitive hearts, and open ears can take in much leading to shared worries, and sometimes those intrusive thoughts can magnify themselves into physical reactions and anxiety. Deena was a superstar in trying to help others, and keep the peace, but it took some severe interruptions to her life to get her to realize she can't shoulder the world’s cares, or even her family's, all by her self. Watching things spiral broke my heart, but seeing the outreach take effect, and the results of accepted helping hands, was heartwarming. When the problem was acknowledged, change happened, in all aspects if their lives, and very much for the better.

This is a great story filled with heart that puts a voice to feelings and situations that younger readers may not understand, but gives them a way to reach out for the help they need, the assistance they deserve. Deena was a talented young girl with so much promise, and surrounded by so much love, that when the time came for the focus to be on her, for better or worse, her audience was more than willing to share the worries as well as the joys to get back to a place of harmony.

RRR presents... A Scandalous Match by Jane Dunn - REVIEW!

Once upon a time, I reviewed every day. Once upon a time, I wasn't involved with the Cybil's Awards. It's not an excuse, but we're getting to the nitty gritty portion of the second round judging and the showdown should be interesting. That being said, I've done more reading than not this month, and today's second blog tour guest via Rachel's Random Resources is one of them.  Ready or not, here comes today's second title in the spotlight...

A Scandalous Match
by
Jane Dunn

About the book...
‘Angelica had always known her lack of high birth, fortune or influence debarred her from being presented as an eligible young woman worthy of marriage. To cap it all, being an actress assured she was utterly beyond the pale of respectability.'

Nightly at the Covent Garden Theatre in London, an enchanting actress is wowing the crowds with her affecting portrayal of Ophelia. Preyed on by rakes and opportunistic young bucks, feted by dukes and earls, even the Prince Regent himself, Angelica Leigh is a sensation.

But in Regency England, beauty and talent are not enough to be considered marriage material, so when the eminently eligible Lord Charles Latimer sets his heart on Angelica, his uncle is sent to intervene.

As a highly respected, hard-working and wealthy lawmaker, The Honourable Ivor Asprey, is himself seen as desirable husband material, but widowed with an eleven-year-old daughter Elinor, he has forsaken all thoughts of romance. Lord Latimer’s mother, the Duchess of Arlington, despairs of her son, despite being reassured by Ivor that his infatuation with the actress will pass. But there is something about Angelica Leigh that demands attention, and even the austere and upstanding Mr Asprey isn’t immune to her charms.

Sunday Times bestselling author Jane Dunn brings the Regency period irresistibly to life. Perfect for fans of Jane Austen. Janice Hadlow, Gill Hornby, and anyone with a Bridgerton-shaped hole in their lives.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was a delightful turn through the Regency period we readers know and love, with characters you won't want to forget.
Angelica may have been the Jane that some set their sights on, but Ivor was not one of them...initially.  He had far better things to do, or so he thought, but when lives are on the line, reputations are at stake, and what must be done is the unexpected, the unheard of, the exact opposite of what he initially set out to do, Ivor is the main to follow through. Watching him get closer to Angelica was tedious... in the best ways possible! You had to appreciate his efforts on his family's behalf to keep the family bloodline in check, but I had to applaud her determination to not be told what to do. It was great fun seeing them get closer and closer much to the surprise of them both, and when the moment of truth comes, all the more pleasing to see their hearts give in.
All in all, a great addition to the author's body of work, and another must read for Historical Romance fans looking for their next adventure between the pages.
About the author...
Jane Dunn is an historian and biographer and the author of seven acclaimed biographies, including Daphne du Maurier and her Sisters and the Sunday Times and NYT bestseller, Elizabeth & Mary: Cousins, Rivals, Queens. She comes to Boldwood with her first fiction outing – a trilogy of novels set in the Regency period, the first of which, The Marriage Season, is to be published in January 2023. She lives in Berkshire with her husband, the linguist Nicholas Ostler.
RRR presents... Baby, One More Time by Camilla Isley - REVIEW!
Time for another Rachel's Random Resources blog tour and this time around, we've got a Romcom to get excited about! It's penned by author Camilla Isley, a familiar name for certain, and stars a woman looking to satisfy her biological clock on her own time-line that gets a most unexpected visit from heartbreak past. Ready or not, get ready to laugh, tear, and gasp as things unfold in today's ebook of choice...
Baby, One More Time
 by
Camilla Isley
About the book...
Driven and smart, Marissa Mayer has worked her way to COO at a major Fintech startup as well as launching her own successful app on the side. Now what she wants more than anything is a baby. And having given up on love after her heart was broken by the boy next door, she’s prepared to do it alone.
Recently returning to New York from LA, Dr John Raikes is an expert in his field of neonatal medicine. But when John introduces himself as Marissa’s doctor, sparks fly, and not in a good way. Because Dr John Raikes is no stranger: he’s her teenage sweetheart all grown up.
Marissa knows she should keep John at arm’s length, lest she have her heart broken again... but there’s something about a man in a white coat. And with John determined to show Marissa he’s changed, can she keep saying no when her heart is saying yes?
A gorgeously funny enemies-to-lovers, second-chance rom com, perfect for fans of Sarah Adams, Lynn Painter and Jo Watson.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Once upon a time, she offered her heart on a platter... only to have it unexpectedly returned to sender. True, they were teenagers, and it was a classic prom night scenario, but that didn't excuse the damages left behind. Flash forward 16 years and you've got a meet-not-so-cute in the making that you'd never anticipate... with twists and turns along the way to complicate things even further.

Marissa had a right to bear the grudge she carried...what John did back then was inexcusable. In the light of day so many years later and with an explanation delivered as to why it happened, I gotta say... she took it better than I would have. I suppose what they say about love being blind certainly applies to the blinders we place on our hearts when feelings run high, but while Marissa may have been willing to forgive on the surface, she certainly wasn't forgetting, and when things get further out of control, it'll all come down to trust, and, ultimately, love. Watching the feelings they had back then reignite was heartwarming, as was the author's reigned in approach to their potential reconciliation. It had just enough of a ring of truth to be believable without sacrificing the comedic aspect of the story.

By book's end, readers get the happy ending they've been waiting for, but the hope, what, and why of it all is a lightly cloaked mystery you'll have to uncover! Great pick for fans of the author's previous works, as well as Romcom readers looking for a new name to add to their reading rotation.

RRR presents... An Enchanted Moment on Ever After Street by Jaimie Admans - REVIEW!

Back again with another review to keep 2024 rolling right along!  Rachel's Random Resources is definitely delivering a lot of bookish fun this year, and I'm so lucky to be a part of it!  This time around, we're featuring the next title in author Jaimie Admans' The Ever After Series, and I for one LOVED it!  It's sweet with a dash of familiar, and the all important splash of fairy tale magic that we all love in our heart of hearts.  Ladies and gents, I give you today's ebook of choice...

An Enchanted Moment on Ever After Street
by
Jaimie Admans

About the book...

A picture-perfect town, a place where dreams come true. Welcome to Ever After Street...

A tale as old as time…

Since her mum’s death, Marnie Platt has shut herself away from everyone who cares about her. Worse, her beloved bookshop on Ever After Street is suffering too. With sales down and the shop’s garden falling into disrepair, Marnie risks losing the very last thing she loves. Until a chance encounter with her surly and reclusive neighbour….

Dark and brooding, Darcy O'Connell likes to keep himself to himself. But when he hears Marnie needs help, he can’t turn his back on her. Soon they are spending most evenings together in her enchanted garden and a friendship starts to bloom…

With the help of old and new friends on Ever After Street, Marnie's bookshop begins to thrive again, and with Darcy's kindness, she starts to get her sparkle back too. She just can't understand why Darcy continues to shut himself away - especially from her. Can she convince him it isn't too late to embrace life, and maybe love, again?

Because every story, even theirs, deserves a happy ending….

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our first introduction to this series had a play on the tale of Cinderella, and, might I say, it was rather charming to say the least.  Now, we're invited back to Ever After Street to meet our modern day version of the beast and his beauty, complete with books (bookshops!), forbidden roses (a floral shop focused on roses!), a beastly prince (lack of royal bloodlines, but beastly acting and hidden away nonetheless!), a headstrong girl looking for adventure in the great wide somewhere (okay, so not EXACTLY on this one, but she knows her own heart, even if it's a little lost recently, with good reason), and a town full of townspeople waiting to spring into action, if ever they were asked to (so different than the tale we know and love, but only just!).
Marnie is our leading lady, and Darcy is our leading gent.  Despite being business owners, both need a lesson in communication, while his should be catered a little more towards patience and acceptance, but I digress.  The obstacles Marnie is facing are not impossible, just improbable, not so much because of a lack of skill, but a failure to reach for help when needed, especially in these hard times.  When she tackles the forboding future that's been placed in her path, she can either turn tail and run, or toughen up and show the landlord and the town what she's made of.  It's easier to do the first, but no one ever said she took the easy way out.
I love how Marnie strove to keep her and her mom's dream alive.  When it looked like trouble was heading her way, I wanted to reach out and help her myself, and found it lovely that the townspeople were only an ask away from assistance. I loved the idea of the Friendship Dates, and watching people connect.  Love comes in many forms, and we need them all to really feel our best selves, even when we don't think we deserve it.  I loved watching Darcy come out of his shell...slowly, but surely...and how Marnie never gave up on him, even when he wanted to give up on himself.  It's a town that I'd love to be a part of, and will happily visit again and again with each story's release (there will be more, right?!).
A great pick for Contemporary Fiction readers as well as Contemporary Romance fans, so long as you both love a healthy dash of fairy tale magic!  See how much you pick up from the tale as old as time that we all know and love, but enjoy the update on the story filled with second chances, and a whole lot of heart.
RRR presents... The Austrian Bride by Helen Parusel - REVIEW!
Well, it's time to get back into the swing of things and get our first review of 2024 on the blog.  Don't get me wrong, reading has been happening, but it's been mostly titles I can't talk about yet (official Cybil's Awards business...stay tuned!), but I digress.  Today's featured title I can talk about and shall do so gladly.  It's a Historical Fiction title on tour with Rachel's Random Resources and it's ready to be your next must read.
The Austrian Bride
by
Helen Parusel
About the book...
Austria, 1938
After years of hardship, Ella is full of hope for a better future for Austrians, and when Hitler marches into Linz, she can’t help but become swept up in the euphoria of her boyfriend, Max.
But she soon realises her mistake. When she witnesses a woman being shot in the street and a childhood friend’s Jewish department store is closed down, she knows she must do something.
It’s a dangerous time to be a resistor, especially when her fascist boyfriend proposes to her. Knowing the secrets she can uncover, Ella enlists in a Reich Bride School, finding herself propelled into the social elite of the Nazi circle.
Ella knows she has a duty – to her family, her friends, and her country – so while Europe teeters on the brink of WW2, a desperate race begins to save the people she loves. But betraying the Nazis could be her death sentence…
A powerful and unforgettable story of the strength of women and the unwavering courage of those who seek a better world. Fans of Suzanne Goldring, Mandy Robotham and Debbie Rix will devour this heartbreaking tale.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This was a moving story about the resilience of people, the nature of others, and the power of hope.  We spend a lot of time with Ella as she goes from wide eyed ingenue to world wise woman, and her experience, while not unique, was heartbreaking.  I was saddened for her when the walls of lies fell down around her, bringing the awful reality of what was transpiring into full focus...and yet, at the same time, I was relieved that she could fully see the atrocities and finally do something within her own power to stop it.  Now, she wasn't going to be the linchpin in stopping this ridiculous war machine, but she was an integral part of saving many, including a few of the those she held most dear.  Was she certain things would turn out right in the end?  Absolutely not...be she had to try because she knew that without her effort, like so many before her and still to come, nothing changes.

Fans of the genre, this is one not to be missed.  It has all the pull of history with danger, love, and hope-filled promises to carry you through as you walk a mile in the shoes of those that called this time period reality instead of a lesson learned.

About the author...

Helen Parusel is a debut historical novelist, having been a teacher and a clothes buyer for M&S. She lives in Hamburg, and her first book is based on the Nazi invasion of Norway in 1940; while her second is inspired by war stories from her mother’s homeland of Austria, where she spent her early holidays.
