Between the Land and the Sea by Derrolyn Anderson

Hi there!
You’ve stumbled across the site built for readers with a variety of tastes called Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers. Hopefully…that was your intent. If so, yay! Thanks for stopping in! If not, nice to meet you and hopefully you’ll find something of interest anyway.

So tomorrow…is….THANKSGIVING DAY.
O-O
Did this sneak up on anyone else, or just me?
Really….I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, 2011 has flown by at whirlwind speeds as a whole, though somehow, some way it had its stalling moments too. Go figure. Anywho, hopefully you’re all ready to stuff the turkey and yourselves tomorrow with your family and friends. Have an extra piece of turkey for me, okay? I give you FULL permission. ^_^ In the mean time…

To help satiate your reading appetite, I’d like to present you with a literary hors d'oeuvre. How is it to be considered an appetizer? Ah well you see, this is but book 1 in a new(ish) Young Adult series featuring a mythical creature that has been rising from the depths of the deep blue sea on more than one occasion recently. Said to quite possibly be the new “it” creature of the moment, I’d say it’s high tide…I mean high time that I delved into the bottomless lipid pool of mermaid lore swimming about, and this my friends is a great place to start. Ready for today’s feature? Here we go. The book of choice for today is…

Marina’s Tales, Book 1:
By

From the author’s site…
Something extraordinary is lurking in the deep ocean waters off the coast of Aptos, California. In just a few weeks after moving to the small beach town, sixteen year old Marina has nearly drowned twice, enchanted the hottest guy in high school, and discovered a supernatural creature. If she can only manage to survive her increasingly dangerous encounters with unpredictable mermaids, she might just be able to unlock the mystery of her past to learn how to appease the mysterious forces that seem to want something from her...and maybe even find true love along the way.

Let’s see, if I had to put this in a nutshell I’d say….take one dash Twilight, add a tablespoon of “under the sea” magic, and shake violently still you achieve a color of serene sea blue. That’s what this book brings to readers. Now, I shall explain the compact description I just created in order to appease the gods of curiosity…because let’s face it, if I stopped there…A) it just wouldn’t be me; and B) some would probably be instantly attracted while others instantly turned off to reading this selection without giving it a fair shake. Ready set….explaining time!

I’m going to take it apart piece by piece and hopefully put it back together better than the king’s horsemen did with Humpty Dumpty. I referenced Twilight…for the romance and a few of the underlying storylines. Yes, there is a supernatural creature, in this case mermaids. Yes, one is in love with a human (or rather several are, but that I’ll let you discover on your own) which for anyone that has seen a Disney movie featuring the life and times of one precocious mermaid, you’ll know is forbidden. Do you see where I’m going with this? These are the areas that brought this highly publicized series to mind and you know what? I don’t fault the book for it. Maybe it’s because I’m a fan of that particular series (or maybe not), but the elements that I saw echoes of were fine by me. One is not a mirror image of the other and the fact that it can call up similarities between the two and STILL stand on its own two feet (or, umm, tail?) is a plus in my book….perhaps it will be in yours too.

Second…that dash of “under the sea” magic I referred too. Of course, that has to do with the paranormal creature chosen to feature in this story…mermaids. Honestly speaking, besides “The Little Mermaid” (actual Disney storybook version), I’ve never read another mermaid story. Now that means I don’t have much to compare it to lore wise but you see, I’m a gatherer of information and lore not a strict “you-must-keep-them-all-the-same-historically” dictator (no offense to those that fall into that category, to each their own!). I understand that a book is simply that…a book (fiction, mind you) and creative licensing is all a part of the game. Personally, I don’t care if the events are historically accurate or follow the most widely accepted views, I WANT A GOOD STORY; pure and simple. If it’s good (or sounds good), I’ll read it…case closed and reference books shut (unless I’m curious about something and research it later….). This book hit all the right notes and even some I wouldn’t have guessed when creating Lorelei and her sisters (including the scary one that attacks….uh, never mind…) “family” and watery home.

Third aspect I mentioned three paragraphs ago now (hey, you know how I get sometimes…this is nothing new… ^_^)…the violent shaking to reach the eventual serene blue sea. That my friend is referring to the action which there is quite a lot of. From riding the waves to out witting jealous girls at their own game, Marina learns about life, love and family. Being uprooted from her globe trotting life with her father and plopped into Aptos, California with her dear old Aunt Abby and Cousin Cruz…certainly unsettling. Being forced to attend the local high school when you’ve been home schooled by the best all of your life….disturbing for sure. A mother you’ve never known, a father that buys you off every time you mention her, a past that is getting murkier by the minute, and multiple attempts on your life….yeah, I’d say that about explains the “violent shaking” there, don’t you? The “serene blue” comes in at the end of the book when things are all smooth sailing…well, sort of; how else do you suppose you’d be tempted into reading the next installment? There always has to be a hook (ooh, bad choice of words) to draw you back in and while this one is more passive (as in future events that are yet to be decided…dun dun dunnnnnn), it serves the story and its characters well. Speaking of characters….

Marina really came to life on the page and I genuinely enjoyed getting to know her character. She’s not your typical teenage girl getting all swept up in popularity contests, “who’s the fairest of them all” concerns and lavish things (though she does have those things thanks to Aunt Evie …who’s not really her aunt, but that’s a story for another day). She has heart and a desire to follow it. She takes the path less traveled and does what she deems as right not because it’s what everyone is doing but because that’s how things should be. She treats those around her with respect and courtesy unless of course they need a good dose of reality of which she’ll happily oblige. Even before we discover shades of blue in her past, it’s easy to see why she becomes fast friends with Megan (quiet and artistically gifted), understands her Cousin Cruz (a fashion designer in the making), and snags the attention of one surfing Adonis named Ethan (~insert wolf whistle here~ …seriously, there is more than looks to this guy as we soon find out). She’s true to herself (once she gets past the splash from her past) and exudes confidence despite her many examples of klutziness executed in perfect form (yeah, been there, tripped over that…) which spells true beauty both inside and out.

The cast of characters surrounding her are varied in their likes and dislikes and might I say that the stereotypical mold is no where to be found when it comes to their true colors, a fact I found refreshing. The descriptions of both land and sea take you places you may never have been but will vividly see right before your eyes. Travel the coastal road and gaze down at the beach (and surfers...hehe) below. Stand on the beach and watch the wave’s crash on the shore. Cut through the water at astounding speeds and surface in the great blue beyond with only the stars to light the sky above. It’s a verbal picture waiting to be painted on the canvas of your mind….so what are you waiting for? Grab a “paintbrush” and get to work!

In summary, if you couldn’t tell…I really enjoyed this book and am eagerly anticipating my upcoming read of book 2 (The Moon and the Tide)…as well as book 3 (The Fate of the Muse). Now if I can only get this darn “make-more-reading-time-for-me-now” formula right, I’ll totally be set. *kicks alchemy set___small explosion…O_O* Recommended reading for Young Adult fans of all ages. Any “questionable” scenes are demure enough while still packing an emotional punch…and the language is kept clean.

This book as well as its follow ups is available now at many of your favorite online book retailers so feel free to scurry off and find a copy after you finish reading my close. ^_^  Ebook for review courtesy of author Derrolyn Anderson. (THANKS!) For more information about this series as well as her other published works and works in progress, be sure to visit her official website.

Until next time….happy pre-Thanksgiving to you…and happy reading!

Taste Testing Tuesdays

Good morning (or whatever time it is where you are), everyone!
Welcome to another installment of Taste Testing Tuesdays here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers!  Taste Testing Tuesdays was inspired by 'Teaser Tuesdays', a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading

On the menu this week...two books that couldn't be more different from each other and yet both elicite smiles and laughter from readers....or at least this reader.  Ready for a taste?  Since I was being indecisive, I let my tweeps select today's "random" pages.  Hey, they're still random!  ^_^  The first response in was from the1stdaughter (~waves~); let's see what her number choices netted us today....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'd gone back to bed in the hope of catching a few more Christmas winks and a snuggle with Ian, but she was yapping, jumping, and eager for fun at the bottom of the stairs.  She was full of the joys of only being eight weeks in this world, and, although she didn't know Christmas from any other day, even a normal day dramatically extended her experience of the world and held plenty of surprises and adventures.
-- pg 37, The Puppy That Came for Christmas by Megan Rix
All together now....1...2...3....awwww!  Such a cutie pie!  Just look at that adorable face.  I remember those days...a little puppy scampering around just discovering everything for the first time.  Many adventures for both puppy and the pup parent...and aside from being a a family pet, this little girl is being trained to be a helper dog.  So far, enjoying the story completely.  This book is available now from Plume...review coming next month.  Stay tuned...
A friend of ours who fancies himself an entrepreneur we have dubbed "the Bar Czar," in honor of one of his schemes: joint ownership of a bar. That project was fairly ordinary by the Bar Czar's standards.  Some of his schemes, like his fleet of chimney sweeps, his home-designed and produced sailboat (despite never having been a sailor), or his Bunkie Hunt buy-up-silver phase were amusing.
-- pg 93, Laughing Through Life by Connie Corcoran Wilson
Hmm, okay, so I was pressed to choose a teaser from this particular page, but that's the fun of the 'teaser' posts, right?  A collection of short essays and writings from the author that brought us back to the 80's (cinematically speaking of course with her other published work), I have a feeling there will be many chuckles to be had whilst reading through this one.  Blog tour swinging through the end of this month...stay tuned!
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
*Open to a random page
*Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
*Share the title & author, too, so that other participants can add the book to their TBR.*
In My Shopping Bag
In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren.
Through her guidelines, your post does not actually have to be named the same and thus my post shall be..."In My Shopping Bag".  (just fits with the "foodie" theme a bit better in my humble opinion)
Let's see what's inside this week...
Southern Fried Women by Pamela King Cable
Hello, hello!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers….the place to be when you’re hungry for a good read. Speaking of hungry, you know what I JUST realized last night? Thanksgiving Day is THIS Thursday. Yep. THIS Thursday. O-O Can someone please tell me where the month of November, let alone 2011 went exactly because I don’t know about you, but it left me without a forwarding address. Seriously! It’s really flown by… *shakes head*. Anywho…back on track here…
Today’s featured title sounds like a cross between a cookbook and a cannibalistic memoir, title wise…but content wise? It’s all down home Southern goodness. The stories vary as does the content, so get ready because you’re in for a mixed and bumpy ride. Today’s book of choice is….
By
See what I mean about the title? Now when I first read that, I simply thought…okay, what does that mean exactly? The author was kind enough to include a definition of sorts in the opening pages and after reading it, I determined something….though I’ve lived in the South the better part of my life, by the definition given, I am NOT a “southern fried woman”. My family may not agree with my dreams, but they’d never laugh at them, unless truly funny; you know, like a car filled with clowns being chased by a giant rooster….or something. If they did laugh about them, then yeah….I’d be “boiling over” all night, who wouldn’t? There are however aspects of these diverse women that I CAN relate to…as I’m certain you might as well. To quote from the book….
She’s any woman brave enough to start over again, darlin’, never gives up her dream, wherever she decides home is.
Well said….which leads me right to the content of the book. Each story features a cast of strong southern women facing the trials of life the best way they know how….head on. They don’t shy away from their circumstances no matter how rough and they’re not afraid to get down and dirty if need be. There’s also a dusting of the religious high road that many in the self proclaimed “Bible belt” take to heart but it’s purely meant to show that by the grace of the powers that be, all things can be overcome. Take “Vernal Paskins, Mobile Home Queen”…our leading lady is having a hard time on life what with having to raise her daughter’s child and a severe lack of funds, but a chance (or fated?) meeting with a traveling preachers wife leads to unexpected fortune both monetarily and spiritually.
In “Beach Babies”, there’s the harder edge of the life exposing the evils that men (and women) will do when they turn their eyes from the path of grace and seek solely to line their pockets for their own selves and not their fellow man. The leading ladies in this story however rise above their given lot and end up living a life most unexpected and fulfilling. “Cry” offers an interesting crossroads at which two characters meet and discover a shared past with a surprising future all thanks to a chance meeting on a dark and lonely strength of road on a balmy southern night. The shortest story in this collection also happens to be my favorite amongst the lot….entitled “No Time For Laura”. It literally brought tears to my eyes in its for page span while conveying the strong message of taking time to enjoy the smallest moments of happiness in life because you never truly know when they won’t be there any longer.
Now, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses for me, despite all I’ve just relayed. There were two stories in fact that no matter how I tried, I just could not get into for the life of me, but you know that’s the beauty of short story collections. There are times when you fall in love with the whole lot and times where the love is few and far between. I’d say the odds presented here, two out of nine, are pretty good as a whole making this a collection I happily count among the “read”.
In short, a book of short stories that gives readers a view on life with a Southern twang. They’re not “nice” in the conventional sense of the word but they are real and emotionally charged. Recommended reading for older teens through adults. There are a few instances of language to be considered as well as controversial topics such as molestation (though not in a condoning sense at all) and child prostitution (again, not condoning and the girls make their break to freedom with fireworks of their own)….in short, not for the kiddos but not dark enough to be put in the adults only section. There is a purpose to the stories shared. They are meant to show (in my mind at least) that behind the charm and sun drenched smiles, there is a fountain of strength and resilience native to Southern women. All one needs to do to release it is step on the wrong toes, cross the wrong daughter, or play high and mighty in a group of ones own peers. Rest assured, a true Southern fried woman will gladly call you out and bring you back to your roots….leaving you with a smile and a story to tell.
Review copy courtesy of Julie at Satya House Publications. (THANKS!) For more information on this title as well as their complete catalog, be sure to visit their official website. This book is on sale now so it should be readily available at a bookstore near you…and dare I suggest, it may even make a great gift addition to your holiday shopping list for a any “southern fried” women you may be acquainted with. ^_^
Until next time…happy reading!
You are cordially invited...
....to have a happy (Breaking Dawn) Friday!
Hi everyone!
So, it's Friday. Congratulations on making it through another week of this crazy-ily fast year.  Here's hoping it was kind to you and that the weekend holds nothing but blue skies (I blame that reference on seeing MY LIFE IN RUINS on TV one too many times this week...which by the way is a great movie ^_^).  Anywho...
I've given you a few bookish titles to check out this week review wise so I thought I'd break away from the norm (slightly) and briefly discuss another bit of news happening today.  If you haven't heard or seen it yet (midnight release baby....oh yeah!), BREAKING DAWN PART 1 hits theaters today.  Woo-hoo!
Now anytime a book is taken to the big screen it can be a source of worry. Will they get the details right, choose the right cast, emote the written feelings, etcetera etcetera....and with this series it was no different.  Though I like most others was skeptical in the beginning about some of their picks and acting abilities, I gotta hand it to them, with each film they've gotten better and better.  This one? Pretty much right on target.  The settings were beautiful, the clothes fabulous, the personal connections all we could have hoped for.  (^_^) Even where they decided to "break" the film was perfect....as well as the surprise right after the first batch of credits (take note...do not rush out of the theater!).  Yes, my friends....this Twihard was satisfied with the results and is thirsty for part 2 (when is that releasing again?).
Now I give you the floor, so to speak. Are you planning to see it? If you have already, what did you think? (Try to stay spoiler free for those that haven't seen/read it yet though...okay? )
Until next time....happy (watching &) reading!
Join me for....The Most Beautiful Walk in the World by John Baxter
Hi there!
So…today’s post. Hmm. Hard time focusing on it with how busy work was today and a certain midnight movie release that I’ll be attending tonight/tomorrow morning. (I wonder if you can guess which one THAT is? ^_^)
…but I did manage to wrangle some time and my thoughts to bring you something new, something refreshing, something from gay olde Pariee…I mean, Paris. It’s a literary walk through the city of lights with a good helping of bookish goodness. Shall I reveal today’s title? Here goes. Today’s book of choice is….
By
John Baxter
This is a case of how one is captured by a book; for me, it was the title and the cover more so than the actual content. Allow me to explain. First, the title….who WOULDN’T want to experience that and when you find out it’s set in Paris, it’s almost a guarantee. They are known as the city of lights for a reason and their beautiful architecture speaks for itself. Second, let’s look at that cover. Every time I look at it I get lost in the waterways of the top image or imagine myself strolling down the lamp lit street below. The subtle use of color in both give them a warm glow, inviting the reader to take that first step on the pathway to greater things. Now about those “greater things”…I’d like to share a quick quote from the book if you please as it’s from the late great Mark Twain….
“Try to learn to breathe deeply, really to taste food when you eat, and when you sleep, really to sleep. Try as much as possible to be wholly alive with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell. And when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough.”
There’s a certain charm in it’s descriptive truth and certainly a state of being that is worthy of the effort. Beyond the beautiful cover and promise of a remarkable time though, the story within isn’t entirely disappointing…it’s just not quite what my imagination thought it might be. You see I was prepared for a sweeping narrative with bookishness to spare and while there were literary references along with the discovery that others (as in visitors to the city) could appreciate them as well, there was a lot more real life that seeped in between the lines.
In all my reading excitement, I think it slipped my mind that this was in fact a MEMOIR, a travel one nonetheless. I’m not opposed to the genre, as I’ve read and shared my experience with them before, but unfortunately this one didn’t quite meet my expectations. Will it meet yours? Hard to say…but if you do decide that French is the language of reading love for you, grab your beret, a glass of wine and settle down for a journey through life from a residents point of view.
Review copy courtesy of the great folks at Harper Perennial. (THANKS!) For more information on this title as well as their complete catalog, feel free to visit them online at the Olive Blog or follow along on Twitter. This book is already released to the reading world and should be available at a bookstore near you.
Until next time…BREAKING DAWN IS ALMOST HERE - WOO-HOO! …and happy reading!  ^_^
Do You See What I See?: Bedbugs by Ben H Winters
Hi there readers!
Long time, no review!  Oh wait….that’s my fault.  Whoops!  Sorry to leave you hanging without loads of delicious bookish goodness to devour.  I have been reading…PROMISE!  It’s just the writing (and the extra reading) that’s been more of a challenge of late.  No worries though, I’m getting it under control (…even if a bullwhip IS required…).  Now, how’s about we dive into a (possibly) new to you title?  Here we go!
Today’s crowning glory comes to us from the crazy fab folks over at Quirk Books. (Hi Eric!)  Why crazy fab?  Simple…because they are crazy about books and always have something fab to bring to the table.  It may not always be to MY liking….but they are tasty treats nonetheless.  As I was working my way through this story and updating my GoodReads status, I kept getting responses from fellow readers about how good this book was, especially if you like psychological thrillers.  Though I can’t say I’ve read many books in this particular genre, I can say that I enjoyed this one through and through.
This title…is like one of those itches you just can never quite reach.  You know the ones.  It feels like something just brushed the back part of your arm and yet when you reach for it, nothing…..but what if it WAS something?  What if the something was just so devious, so fast, and so small that finding evidence to support your claims would be next to impossible…unless of course you stumbled upon the mother of all secrets in which case indisputable proof would present itself?  Yes siree, this one is a doozy.  Grab the calamine lotion…it’s gonna be a power of suggestion kinda day.  May I present the book of choice for the day….
By
From the publisher….
Meet Alex and Susan Wendt. They are the perfect couple in search of the perfect brownstone—and they find their dream house in the heart of Brooklyn Heights. Sure, the landlady is a little eccentric, and the handyman drops some cryptic remarks about the previous tenants. But the rent is so low; it’s too good to pass up!
Big mistake: Susan soon discovers that the brownstone is teeming with bedbugs—or is it? She awakens every morning with fresh bites, but neither Alex nor their daughter Emma has a single welt. Exterminators search the property and turn up nothing. The landlady insists the building is clean. Susan fears that she's going mad—but as the mystery deepens, a more sinister explanation presents itself: She may literally be confronting the bedbug problem from Hell.
Yes my friends….bedbugs.  You read that right.  They’ve been in the news.  They’ve been in your (not you personally) beds.  They’ve been anywhere their little hearts (~eww~) desire and then some (~double eww~), but this book introduces a new breed of bug and it’s one you better hope you never encounter.  Why?  What could possibly make them any worse?  Let’s just say that when paranoia begins creeping its way into your every thought and you start to doubt your sanity over the possibly of the little pests actually existing especially since you’re the only one they seem to have it in for….yeah, that’s a step up.
The story is about bedbugs and yet it’s not.  It keeps you guessing whether they actually exist or if something else is behind everything that’s occurring...and it works well.  Aside from a few odd thoughts, conversations and coincidental (or are they?) strange events, nothing truly extraordinary happens in the beginning chapters of the book other than the families move.  While that might seem off putting, trust me when I say that the easy flow of the writing makes up for it ten fold.  Seriously, you can start a page one moment and find yourself 20+ more in without even realizing the progress you’ve made….I’d say that’s an accomplishment in and of itself.  Now, back to that story….
The characters are likeable enough (though Emma, their daughter, is a hoot!) and easy to relate to with their everyday worries of time, money, etcetera, etcetera; they could easily be the couple next door, though let’s hope not because that means that …well, you’ll see.  The author did a great job of giving life to each and every one.  We have enough details about them as we need, WHEN we need them.  Everything isn’t laid out for you at once, allowing you to become acquainted with everyone in due time.
The plot will keep you guessing as it bounces from bugs, to not bugs, to maybe bugs, to something else altogether…in other words, be prepared for twists and turns!  Keep your eyes open and your mind recording the events as you move forward….you never know what little piece of information or side character may prove vital by book’s end; trust me, that my friends is a whopper of a surprise.  Okay, okay…so truth be told I had my suspicions, but NEVER to the extent to which things finally reached.  There’s a turning point in the book about 2/3 of the way through where it’s not only the easy flow of the words that’s making you turn the pages, but the “I-have-to-know-how-this-all-pans-out-RIGHT-NOW” adrenaline that takes hold.
Recommended read for older teens through adult readers.  If not for the obvious issue of the subject matter potentially giving you the heebee geebees, there are a few instances of strong language throughout as well as the mind-blowing (hehe…inside joke, unless you’ve read it…) ending which can certainly turn a stomach or two (as can the illustrated divisions within the book…marked by a progressive numbers of bedbugs… ~shudders~).  What does all that mean?  It’s a good book…just not a first pick right before going to bed.  O-O  This book reached published status this past September, so it should be readily available at a bookstore near you.
Review copy courtesy of Eric at Quirk Books.  (THANKS!)  For more information on this title as well as their full catalog, visit them online, like them on Facebook, or follow along on Twitter.  To check out what author Ben H Winters is up to now, check out his Twitter feed.
Until next time…*scratch scratch*….happy reading!
Taste Testing Tuesdays
Good morning (or whatever time it is where you are), everyone!
Welcome to another installment of Taste Testing Tuesdays here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers!  Taste Testing Tuesdays was inspired by 'Teaser Tuesdays', a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading
On the menu this week...a book I just started the other day and so far is proving to be rather interesting.  Ready for a taste?  Here it comes....
Ally wakes me early on Saturday morning so I take her to the park before coaching.  Summer vanished in the night, chased by a cruel cold front.  We shiver in sweaters while the wind blows all the color off the trees.
-- pg 95, All Good Children by Catherine Austen (ARC)
How's that for a description?  I can literally feel the cold air swirling around me now.  The society this book is situated in is a curious one indeed....but some things, are not so far fetched considering the world as it is in the here and now.  For more information on this title, check out the author's website....and don't forget about the blog tour swinging through later this month!
