About the book...
Aah! Dude! It moved!

Can the mysterious shuddering pumpkin the three kids found in the forest be alive? They’re going to find out when they lift it from its resting place and carry it home. But what happens if someone or something comes looking for it?

This evocative graphic novel is spooky yet ultimately gentle and charming. It presents a tale of unfounded fear of those who are different and the similarities we all share. Told in richly stylized full-color artwork from illustrator Meaghan Tosi whose previous work Kirkus Reviews praised as delightful.

I've been on a bit of a Graphic Novel roll here recently, a format I don't generally indulge in, but I must say, it's been rather enjoyable.  Take this one, for example...

A book like this goes to show you that as much as I am a lover of the WRITTEN WORD, a picture can, in fact, speak volumes.  The words throughout this book amount to a hill of beans versus a mountain, and yet, the tale is conveyed perfectly.  We get the happiness of the little girl before the boys decide to be bullies.  We see the sadness in her eyes, as well as the regret in theirs, when the stolen property gets lodged out of reach.  Upon discovering a mysterious pumpkin (that moves!), the curiosity in their eyes is very real, as is the intent to get their hands on something that doesn't belong to them...something that comes to haunt them later that evening....dun dun DUNNN!

The point is that without detailed passages, readers are left to study the images before them, and discern the story from the panels given.  Those here do a wonderful job of conveying emotions, and continue the forward motion of the plot as it comes to a rather tedious point.  I must say that the ending was a surprise, considering the mounting tension, but a sweet one at that.  It allowed the story to come down on the scare factor a few notches so that younger readers could easily partake with less chance of retribution from their imaginations at bedtime.

So go ahead, snuggle in, and get ready to embark on a story perfect for the reading season that will deliver just enough chills to keep your attention, while reminding us about the importance of family...and not touching things that belong to others without permission!
