I was actually between the pages of two books at the time I was reading this...one in print and this one in ebook. The other book was good in its own right, mind you, but I found myself being drawn back over to this one time and time again, as the magic of the story truly left its mark.

Daisy was a wonderful character...strong-willed when the need called for it, determined, dedicated, caring, and wonderfully soft hearted. It was a big step that she took, stepping out of her comfort zone and into the arms of her dream, but that's the only way they can become reality sometimes, you know? I felt so badly for her when the fallout with her husband occurred, betrayed almost as much as if it was me and not her. Can you imagine giving twenty years of yourself to a marriage, only to find out that the things you kept putting off as a team, were never really in the cards? I was stunned, shocked, and totally behind her decisions. Grant it, I wasn't as keen on the mayor as she was, but we all have our preferences. I admit, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop initially...and drop it did, but certainly not in the way I was imagining. Everything plays out the way it should be, and we end up with a nice little HEA that is totally deserved by all.

Along the way, we get to know a new country, her neighbors that soon become friends, the challenges of choosing a new life, and the rewards that come with following your own path. It's definitely a great big push to never let today pass you by because you never know what tomorrow may bring...but it also reminds us that communication is key in any relationship, be it love or friendship, and it's never a bad thing to speak of what we need. A great addition to the reading list of any fan of Women's Fiction, and a wonderful armchair escape you didn't know you need.

All in all, I can only say it took a travesty from our past, and managed to show how beauty, strength, courage, and love still could be found amongst it all. It was heartbreaking and heart-warming all the same time, and by book’s end, I found myself brought to tears, for everything they went through, all the hurdles, hardships, and sacrifices, but also the moments of grace captured so vividly; it’s a story that I won’t soon forget. A great read and recommendation for Historical Fiction fans as well as readers of Biographies and Memoirs.

You know how when you're reading and you're REALLY into a story, the pages just fly by, and what seemed like a long book initially ends up not being long enough?  OH yeah, I LOVE that feeling...and yet, sometimes it's harder to grasp than others.  Now hold on, I know what you're thinking...this is all leading into a review, so it MUST mean I didn't enjoy my time between the epages...ah, but see, that making that assumption without reading on would make you mal mort (loosely translated...dead wrong).

See, when locked in the e-passages, I found myself getting bogged down by the details.  It wasn't so much the fact that the author takes us on a walking tour of France (très beau), or that the French language is sprinkled throughout the text (hello, it IS set there after all!), but there were things I felt I should have already known or understood better from the start.  Being the second in the series, I think I would have cared more for the characters earlier on if I'd read the first.  For example, Margaret is such a source of strength for Amy, but in my time with her, I saw more of the stereotypical French attitude than motherly affection...true she was going through some MAJOR things, but still. I mean, some books work better as standalone titles, while others need their compadres to prop them up a little; that's nothing to frown at, just another reason to READ MORE!  So, let's get down to business....

As I read, I was rooting for Amy to stay in France even though it seemed things were getting tougher by the moment...it seemed her heart was there even if everything else was screaming for escape...and while I wouldn't have taken the leap of faith she did without making William sing first (he said he had news but kept hedging, spill it son!), she did so with her whole heart.  I literally wanted to knock the head off of William's scummy shoulders after he finally gave her the big news, or rather she pried it from him (and his suitcase!)...but he'll get what's coming to him eventually; karma likes a challenge.  Meanwhile, Manu played a most unexpected role between the start and the finish...I honestly didn't see that transition coming...and Herve, well, let's just say I was surprised, but I wasn't (something didn't quite add up with all those business ventures).  I wish I could say I loved Margaret, but the side I saw of her wasn't very likable, nor was that of someone else that I won't mention by name because it will spoil the surprise, but I did actually appreciate the presence of Kat, however "distant" it was.  She seemed like someone to know, and yet another reason to perhaps read that first book.

After having finished my read through, and taking a step away from the epages, I can more fully appreciate the story as a whole.  It was filled with secrets, revelations, final goodbyes, and new beginnings...all of which add up to a surprisingly good read.  See?  Aren't you glad you kept reading past my intro?  A great addition to your Women's Fiction collection or weekend reading list...though I do suggest perhaps taking in The Paris Effect first.

Ellie was a determined young woman set on delivering some semblance of peace to her ailing grandmother, while taking the first step on a journey she never knew was intended for her.  The places she sees, the people she meets, the connections she makes, all create a spectacular backdrop for a story that will steal your heart.  The long forgotten castle adds a certain air of mystery.  The family working the surrounding lands brings a palpable heart to the seemingly silenced emotional landscape.  The forbidden nature of it all creates the challenge from which Ellie will not back down from, eventually granting her more than simply access, but a kinship of sorts with all that's transpired.  It was wonderful following the ladies, both past and present, down the roads of their fated futures, and seeing the strength of character they possessed in times that were more than earthshattering, but heart quaking.

For me, the hardest part was keeping the stories straight.  Don't get me wrong, each stands on its own two feet with its own feisty (if unexpected) heroine (of a sort) and a remarkable tale to tell that ends up connecting throughout the span of lifetimes, but in the moment, things would get a bit fuzzy. We kept bouncing back to the past and journeying through a memory of its own past, then would flit back to the future, or at least its own future, only to wind up in another era all together.  It left my head a wee bit woozy from time to time.  Eventually though, things fell into place and the day progression in each timeline was forward marching, allowing this reader at least an easier time of keeping the past with the past, the present with the present, and the future just on the horizon.

In the end, it was a grand adventure with spectacular views, a magnanimous leading lady no matter the time period she may be in, and journey of the heart you won't soon forget.  Take a chance on waking this sleeping beauty and get whisked away by all the stories she can tell...
