One of the signs of a GREAT SERIES to me is that no matter how long it's been since you indulged in the previous installments, you can always pick up the next one and feel like you're coming home...or at least along for a very dangerous journey with old friends...and that's just what the Starchild series delivers.

Image result for magic books

It's been a spell since I've read book one, let alone book two, and yet, the moment I stepped between the pages, I was instantly swept up in it all.  I was once again wondering if Long was going to get a chance to make amends, let alone survive the whole ordeal...curious to see how the prophecy was holding up against all the hardships and growing darkness...desperate to know if the Starchild himself was going to gain enough knowledge, skills, and control to put evil in its place...and anxious to see how Mai was holding up through it all.  There was so much going on when we last left them, but there was so much still ahead of them as well, and no part of the journey is free of danger as evil strives to get the upper hand...and let me tell you, the wannabe king is DEFINITELY trouble!

Special note...though the whole series thus far has been wonderful, there are two characters outside the main that I truly enjoy.  One is Mai's little lizard friend...cute, and adaptable, but also a pretty good judge of character!  They should listen to it more often!  The second is Aque's character.  Son of the Ice Queen herself, right from his introduction, I couldn't get enough.  He's full of surprises, or at least non-typical royalty reactions, and more powerful than most assume, but he's also fair, kind, and warm hearted...something that's a tad hard to find in this great vast white frozen land.

All in all, a great addition to the growing series that does more than connect point A to point B.  It gives us the makeshift family we've come to call our own, along with new friends made along the way, with a trunk load of trouble coming full speed ahead, while somehow finding the quietness of mind to keep a focused eye on that small kernel of hope that's carrying them through.  The darkness in Long won't give up without a fight, but while his sister may be a thoughtbanker, she's never been known to shy away from protecting friends and family before, and this won't be the time that she starts.

About the book...
A gripping forest adventure full of mystery, betrayal and courage.

They travel to Naroan – the forest lands of the soulbankers, the regulators of life and death. Against the backdrop of rules and suspicion, the children are challenged with unravelling the mystery of the Silvershade, which has been calling to Akra from the moment he arrived in the forest city. Honestly, it didn't take long for me to step back into the world of the Starchild despite the fact that my last venture took place in 2013.  Isn't it lovely when a book can transport you to another world, another time as if it was only yesterday that you last visited?  This time around, things are getting VERY dark, as the prophecy starts to unravel, unknown factors make themselves known in horrible ways, and those we love and trust get fooled by darkness.  It's been a hard journey for our little friends, but there is much more to come that will not only try their strength and courage...but their hearts.

I really like how the author makes her characters relatable...not always an easy feat when you're dealing in Fantasy either.  The struggles they face...wanting power, glory, recognition, and control...are things we all deal with from time to time, thereby making the outcomes of those issues being faced down lessons we can carry with us.  Such as...

...sometimes it is more wise to go with the flow instead of bucking the crowd...at least until the time is right.
...staying in touch with those we love and care for can help alert us to strange happenings as they appear, instead of letting the darkness take hold.  Be the light for someone else!
...though we may want to un-shoulder others of the burdens they carry, those memories can also bring enlightenment to those they belong to...but they have to travel through the feelings to get there!

It's definitely a great addition to the growing series and I, for one, can't wait to see how the next leg of their journey goes!  I mean, I have so many unanswered questions and so much anxiety about a certain someone who fell victim to the dark and is still awaiting the freedom they formerly knew, as well as the fate of the Starchild himself, and our leading lady.  High recommendation for fans of Children's Fantasy of all ages!

Starchild: Book One: The Age of Akra by Vacen Taylor

Hi guys!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the place to be when you're in the mood for an escape from the everyday mundane aspect of life; after all, reading can take you ANYWHERE.

Today's adventure is taking us out of this world and into the realm of Fantasy, but only just.  It's the beginning of a Children's Fiction series aimed at middle grade readers but perfectly suited for those well beyond in years.  It comes to us from a rising name in the literary arena and aside from being a good friend, fabulous photographer, and an awesome tweep from halfway around the world, she's a great writer too!  Talk about a triple threat (or is that quadruple?)!

Seriously though, my experience reading her work thus far has been positive and the first release in her children's series only goes to push that opinion even higher.  Haven't had the pleasure of reading her work just yet?  Ah, but you will...RIGHT NOW!  How's THAT for instant gratification?  I do aim to please.  (^_^)  Today's book of choice is...

Starchild
Book One:  The Age of Akra
by

Prepare to be taken away to the planet Sage, as we embark on a quest for the Valley of a Thousand Thoughts and are led well beyond the scope of our initial journey.  When a chance encounter (or is it?) with the prophesied Starchild sets our brother and sister duo on a mission far greater than their own (though that was PRETTY important as it is!), it will take strength, courage and the powers of the seven nations to surmount the obstacles placed in their paths.  Their success or failure is entirely in their own hands because on this trip, the foes FAR out number the friends...and they are not that easily discerned either.

Far be it from me to try and over explain a work of fantasy even at a middle grade level seeing as how it's not my usual forte, admittedly though, I HAD FUN!  So, in order to better get across my likes/dislikes, I'll approach this one on familiar ground.  Characters anyone?  Mai was a GREAT character; humble, loyal, eager to learn as well as share what she has learned, in other words a great model as well as fictitious leader in the making.  She has a lot on her shoulders but makes the most of each challenge and never accepts defeat.  (Definitely like her... ^_^)  Long, the unlikely volunteer and yet perfect traveling companion especially with his unique skills, proves to be the comic relief most often, but also shows us that your lot in life does not measure the size of your heart...and despite any misgivings you may have about him, Long's really is quite large.  Oh yes, and speaking of comic relief, I couldn't forgive myself if I left out Barka!  He's a good-natured little fellow that never hesitates to tell you like it is...though tell is not meant in the traditional sense.  Think Rapunzel...(read the book...you'll see)...

Outside the family, we have Akra, who is a newcomer to both these lands as well as the world in general.  How so?  Well, he is supposedly the long await Starchild that will bring balance to them all...but first, he had to grow into all the powers he is to possess AND avoid being taken out by the dark forces in hot pursuit.  Yep.  He's got troubles aplenty but with the help of his new found friends, the odds are a bit more in his favor.  Continuing on that darkened path, we have the spiderflax (-shudders- ...if Aragog creeped you out...BE PREPARED!) and the Dementra (-double shudder- ...no comment but their name in and out itself should tell you something), not to mention all the other baddies out to influence Akra and Sahib to join with the dark side; a myriad of pitfalls but only their faith in the light and friendships can guide them through.  What's that?  I forgot to mention Sahib?  Silly me.  He is an integral part of all that will unfold, though how and why are not immediately clear.  All I can say is to give it time...and pay attention!   (It's SO worth it!)

Author Vacen Taylor
So, in conclusion, book one in a forthcoming seven book series for Middle Grade readers and beyond that will introduce you to the world of fantasy literature, one step at a time.  It's perfect for those that aren't accustomed to the intensity a full-fledged adult fantasy can bring, or who simply don't care for that sort of thing.  Hey to each their own and to my own, I count this book as a win!  I know I'll be checking out the second installment (which I do believe is available now) and hope you'll join me in the adventure!

Until next time....happy reading!
