About the book...
One woman discovers the beauty in chaos in this poignant and heartwarming story about the threads that hold family together from #1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery.

With her divorce settlement about to run out and a mortgage she can’t afford, Robyn Caldwell needs a plan for her future. She nurtured her family and neglected herself. But how’s she supposed to think when her daughter has become the most demanding bride ever, her son won’t even consider college, her best friend is on the brink of marital disaster and her ex is making a monumentally bad decision that could bring everything crashing down on Robyn’s head? So when her great-aunt Lillian invites her to Santa Barbara for the summer, Robyn hops on the first plane.

But it’s hard to run away when you’re the heart of the family. One by one, everyone she left behind follows her across the country. Somehow, their baggage doesn’t feel as heavy in the sun-drenched, mishmash mansion. The more time Robyn spends with free-spirited Lillian, the more she sees the appeal in taking chances—on dreams, on love, on family. Life is meant to be lived on purpose. All she has to do is muster the courage to take a chance on herself

Harlow and Enid scored a corner table on the restaurant’s patio. Overhead fans stirred the humid air just enough to make sitting outside tolerable.
“Tonight’s on me,” Harlow said, studying the specials listed on the blackboard by the bar. “We’re still celebrating you getting into medical school.”
Enid shook her head. “That’s old news. I leave in eight weeks.”
Harlow looked at her friend. “Nervous?”
“Terrified. The first year is supposed to be so hard.”
“But you’re the smartest person I know. You’ll be fine.”
“What if I fail?”
Harlow reached across the table and grabbed her hands. “What if you get all A’s?”
“Unlikely.”
“There’s that optimistic spirit I admire,” she teased. “You were nervous about high school, and you aced that. You were freaked about college because, and I quote, ‘All the smart kids will be in one place.’ You graduated top of your class. Medical school is no different.”
“I wish that were true.”
Harlow grinned. “When have I ever been wrong?”
Enid smiled. “You do have a good track record.”
Harlow waved over their server and ordered two piΓ±a colada sunrises, jalapeΓ±o poppers, chicken and mango skewers and coconut shrimp.
Enid grinned. “All my favorites.”
“Of course. You got into Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. You’re my hero.”
“I still can’t believe it.” She lowered her voice. “I’m really excited.”
“You should be. You’ll be a terrific doctor. And for the record, you don’t have to study pediatric oncology.”
Enid’s dark eyes widened. “But I want to.”
“You’re still starstruck by the doctors I had when I was little. Maybe you’d prefer to be a gynecologist. Or a neurosurgeon.”
“I promise to keep an open mind, even though I’m certain about my decision.”
“You can’t keep an open mind and be certain. They’re mutually exclusive.”
“You know what I mean,” Enid said with a laugh.
Harlow nodded, knowing there was no reasoning with her friend on this topic. When she’d been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia or ALL, she’d been all of seven. She’d been too young to understand how sick she was, but everything about her treatment had scared her, especially the worry and terror in her mother’s eyes. Enid had been a constant in her life. Her friend had insisted on visiting regularly, bringing dolls and books to keep Harlow company. She’d been fearless when Harlow had thrown up for weeks, lost her hair and been too weak to raise her head.
While Harlow’s parents had insisted all would be well, Enid had looked up ALL and reported her findings to her friend. It was only then Harlow had realized how close she was to dying. The revelation had sent her parents into a frenzy, but she’d felt better knowing the truth.
Their drinks arrived, drawing Harlow back to the present. She raised her glass. “To Enid—my amazing friend.”
“I’m not amazing, but thank you.”
They touched glasses then sipped.
“So,” Harlow said with a laugh. “About the wedding…”
Enid opened the timer app on her phone. “Seventeen minutes,” she said, pushing a button. “You have seventeen minutes to monopolize the conversation with wedding talk.”
Harlow laughed. “I love that you’re not going to let me turn into a bridezilla. So, Kip says I should plan the wedding of my dreams. I can’t decide if he’s being supportive or avoiding making any decisions.”
“It’s probably both. Guys don’t fantasize about their weddings the way a lot of girls do. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t love you.”
“I know, but I wish he wanted to be a little more involved.”
“Maybe when you nail down some specifics, he’ll be interested.”
Harlow knew she was right. “Venue and date matter the most. I’m still thinking my mom’s beautiful backyard.”
Enid’s expression turned doubtful. “If you’re planning on next summer, it could be hot and humid, or worse, raining. Do you want to risk an outdoor wedding?”
“We could get a tent.”
“So, a tent in the rain? Harlow, don’t you want to get married inside?”
Harlow laughed. “No, little library mouse. I like the outdoors. I want to feel the grass in my toes.”
“You’re not wearing shoes?”
“Metaphorically.”
“Or you could find a really nice venue with green carpeting. I’m just saying.”
“When I was nine, my Uncle Leo died. I didn’t know him that well, but my mom was devastated. Austin, Mom and I went to Santa Barbara and stayed with Aunt Lillian for the summer. It was magical. Her house is incredible. Huge and old, with secret passageways. Anyway, when we finally came home, my dad had bought the house my mom has now. We were all surprised. I remember running out onto the patio with Mom. She said the backyard was beautiful enough for a wedding. I told her I wanted to be married there, and she said she would make that happen.”
Harlow smiled. “It’s my destiny to marry Kip there.”
Enid laughed. “Then I sure hope your destiny doesn’t include rain.”

🌷  ~~~   EXCERPT #9   ~~~  πŸŒ·

Friday morning Nissa got up early to finish getting ready for her move-out. She’d packed her personal things, along with a few breakables she didn’t want to leave out. All that was left was her grandmother’s china and her clothes. She would take care of the clothes first thing, then wait for Shane to arrive to help her with the china. Once that was done, she would give her place a final clean, then head over to Desmond’s house.
So far she’d done a good job of ignoring her upcoming living situation. If she didn’t think about moving into the big house on the Sound and, you know, living with him, she didn’t get nervous. But if she allowed herself to dwell on the reality of sharing a roof with a guy she’d had a crush on for over a decade, she got a little queasy.
Not that her crush meant anything, she reminded herself as she got dressed before heading for the bathroom. It was just a funny quirk, left over from when she’d been a teenager. Desmond had been older, fantastically good-looking and sweet to her. Of course she’d liked him. Now, as a grown-up, she knew those feelings were just remnants of happy memories. These days they were friends. Good friends. He’d been married, for heaven’s sake, and she’d been engaged. They’d both moved on. Or at least she had—she doubted he had anything to move on from. So there was nothing to worry about or any reason to be nervous. Really.
That somewhat decided, she finished getting ready, then put together several boxes and got out packing paper. She set everything on her dining room table. Shortly after eight, her doorbell rang.
She let in her brother, smiling when she saw the to-go tray he carried.
“Morning,” he said, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek. “I brought breakfast.”
“I see that. Thank you.”
She took the coffee and breakfast sandwich he offered, then led the way to the sofa in her living room. They set their food on the coffee table.

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're teaming up with TLC Book Tours to spread some PRE BOOK BIRTHDAY BUZZ about the latest Susan Mallery title coming your way via HQN Books this February!  It's a work of Contemporary Fiction that sounds like it blends equal parts family, friends, and heart...and who couldn't use a good dose of that?!  Ready or not, here comes today's title in the spotlight...

HQN Books

About the book...
Step into the vineyard with Susan Mallery’s most irresistible novel yet, as one woman searches for the perfect blend of love, family and wine.

Mackenzie Dienes seems to have it all—a beautiful home, close friends and a successful career as an elite winemaker with the family winery. There’s just one problem—it’s not her family, it’s her husband’s. In fact, everything in her life is tied to him—his mother is the closest thing to a mom that she’s ever had, their home is on the family compound, his sister is her best friend. So when she and her husband admit their marriage is over, her pain goes beyond heartbreak. She’s on the brink of losing everything. Her job, her home, her friends and, worst of all, her family.

Staying is an option. She can continue to work at the winery, be friends with her mother-in-law, hug her nieces and nephews—but as an employee, nothing more. Or she can surrender every piece of her heart in order to build a legacy of her own. If she can dare to let go of the life she thought she wanted, she might discover something even more beautiful waiting for her beneath a painted moon.

~~~   EXCERPT   ~~~
“How does it feel to be a magnificent blessing?” Four asked with a grin.
Mackenzie did her best not to groan. “It’s better than last year when she said I was a miracle brought into the family to take Bel AprΓ¨s to greatness. Although technically I’m pretty sure she said I brought a magnificent blessing, not that I was one.” She looked at her youngest sister-in-law. “Sorry about her enthusiasm.”
“Don’t be. We love you just as much. Or maybe more. Our love isn’t conditional.”
Four was right about that, Mackenzie thought. Barbara always claimed Mackenzie was her favorite, but that affection was very much tied to her work in the winery. If she hadn’t been interested in Bel AprΓ¨s, Mackenzie wasn’t completely sure Barbara would have allowed the wedding to take place.
“She is a challenge,” she murmured. “She is,” Four agreed. “She’s my mother and I love her, but there is something deeply wrong with her. I can’t figure out if she was traumatized as a child or if she was just plain born mean.”
The stark assessment surprised Mackenzie. “You think she’s mean?”
Four’s eyes brightened with amusement. “Do you think she’s nice?”
“I wouldn’t say nice. She can be…exacting. But she’s always been good to me.”
“She has, and you deserve her affection.” Four hugged her. “You have an open and giving heart that warms us all. You are the fairy dust that allows us to fly.” She waved her glass. “Oh, and you’re magnificent.”
“I agree.”
The male voice came from behind her. Mackenzie turned to see Bruno Provencio walk up to join them. The man knew how to dress, she thought. Like Rhys, Bruno wore slacks and a long-sleeved shirt, but somehow the clothes were more elegant on him. Barbara said his clothes were all custom—a concept Mackenzie understood intellectually but made no sense to her on a day-to-day basis. Why take the time when you could buy stuff online and have it delivered with just a few clicks?
Something she would guess that Bruno had never done in his life, she thought, trying not to smile. Bruno came from money. He was good-looking, with dark hair and brown eyes, and carried himself with an air of confidence that added to the appeal.
One day she would be confident, too, she told herself. If not in this life, then maybe the next.
She groaned. “Don’t say magnificent, please. Barbara was just being…” “Her usual charming self,” Bruno said, taking Mackenzie’s free hand in his and leaning in to kiss her cheek. He did the same with Four.
“Successful party, as always,” he said.
“It’s all Stephanie,” Mackenzie told him, setting her empty glass on the passing server’s tray.
Bruno held out his hand to Mackenzie. “A dance?”
She smiled and nodded. She wasn’t sure if she gave off a nondancer vibe or if it was her position as Rhys’s wife and Barbara’s daughter-in-law, but almost none of the men at the party wanted to dance with her. But every year, Bruno asked and she happily agreed.
They moved toward the dance floor and joined the other couples there. Rhys was dancing and chatting with the owner of a local fashion boutique. Barbara and Giorgio were wrapped in each other’s arms.
Bruno put his hand on her waist, keeping a respectable distance, and they began to move to the music.
“Perfect weather for the party,” he said.
She glanced toward the setting sun. “It is. We were lucky it wasn’t too hot.” The high eighties were manageable, but a day in the nineties would have made for an uncomfortable event.
“We’re seeing more of you than usual,” she added. “Do you have new business in the area?”
Bruno was a wine distributor—at least that was how he described himself. She knew he also invested in a few wineries and had more money than God, and when he flew into town, he did so on a private jet. But aside from that, he was a mystery. A handsome mystery, but still, an unknown. “I’m thinking of buying a winery,” he admitted.
“You are? I knew you were an investor, but I didn’t think you wanted more than that.”
He gave her a half smile. “I like being in charge.”
About the book...
[ ] Dance till dawn
[ ] Go skydiving
[ ] Wear a bikini in public
[ ] Start living
Two best friends jump-start their lives in a summer that will change them forever…
Single mom Ellen Fox couldn’t be more content—until she overhears her son saying he can’t go to his dream college because she needs him too much. If she wants him to live his best life, she has to convince him she’s living hers.
So Unity Leandre, her best friend since forever, creates a list of challenges to push Ellen out of her comfort zone. Unity will complete the list, too, but not because she needs to change. What’s wrong with a thirtysomething widow still sleeping in her late husband’s childhood bed?
The Friendship List begins as a way to make others believe they’re just fine. But somewhere between “wear three-inch heels” and “have sex with a gorgeous guy,” Ellen and Unity discover that life is meant to be lived with joy and abandon, in a story filled with humor, heartache and regrettable tattoos.
*
Ellen couldn’t figure out why a six-foot-five-inch, seventeen-year-old guy crying bothered her more than pretty much any teenage girl crying. Was it reverse sexual discrimination? Because boys cried less often, their tears had more value? Was it the sheer size of Luka juxtaposed with the implied vulnerability of tears? As she was unlikely to figure out an answer, she decided to ignore the question.
“Luka, you’re going to be fine,” she said, reaching up to pat the teen on his shoulder as Cooper hovered nearby. “You’ll take the online Spanish class and you’ll do great. You’re plenty smart. You just got complacent.”
“He thought because he’s such a hotshot on the field, his shit didn’t stink,” Coop said, then groaned. “Sorry, Mom. Um, I meant to say, ah, poop.”
She turned to her son and raised her eyebrows. She was pleased that, despite his age and size, he took a step back and swallowed.
“I’m really sorry,” he added.
“As you should be. Luka, Coach isn’t throwing you off the bus.”
“You didn’t see him. He was really mad. He said I was an idiot.”
Not exactly the word she would have chosen, but then she didn’t spend much time in the jock/jockette world.
“You’re a leader, so he expects better of you.”
More tears filled Luka’s eyes. Next to him, Coop winced.
“What if I can’t get an A?”
“You won’t with that attitude.”
Luka sniffed. “That’s what Coach said.”
Cooper leaned close. “It’s a teacher thing. They think alike. Welcome to my world.”
She did her best not to smile. Her boys, she thought fondly. Cooper and his friends had been running in and out of her life since he’d been old enough to invite kids back to play. Luka had been a staple in her life for nearly a decade. He and his family had moved here from Yap (a tiny island in Micronesia—she’d had to look it up). Luka and Coop had met the first day of second grade and been best friends ever since.
“Luka, I forbid you to think about this anymore today. Your mom is waiting for you. Go have a nice dinner and relax this evening. Tomorrow, get your butt in gear and get going on the Spanish studies.” She hesitated. “I’ll talk to Coach and make sure you’re still on the college trip.”
His dark eyes brightened. “You will? Thanks, Ms. F. That would be great.”
Before she could step back, Luka grabbed her and lifted her up in the air. It was not a comfortable feeling, but all of Coop’s friends seemed to do it. He swung her around twice before setting her down. Both teens headed for the door.
“I’ll be back by ten,” Coop yelled over his shoulder.
“Have fun.”
Ellen gave herself a little shake to make sure nothing had been crushed, then stepped out on her small deck to check out the heat level. The front of the house faced south, leaving the backyard in shade in the early evening. The temperature was close to eighty, but bearable.
The deck overlooked a small patch of lawn edged by fencing. Nothing fancy, but it was hers and she loved it. She quickly wiped off the metal table and dusted the chairs before putting out placemats, plenty of paper napkins and a cut-up lime. She’d already made a green salad to counteract the calories from the fried chicken. Shortly after six, she heard a knock on the front door, followed by a familiar voice calling, “It’s me.”
KFC - Chicken Bucket (8 pcs)- A bucket of delicious 8 KFC chicken ...
“In the kitchen,” she yelled as she opened the refrigerator and pulled out two bottles of beer. Dos Equis for him and a Corona for herself. She glared when she saw the extra to-go container in his hand.
“What?” she demanded. “We agreed on chicken.”
He held up the KFC bucket. “I brought chicken. Original, because you like it.”
“Don’t distract me. Are those potatoes? I can’t eat those.”
“Actually you can. I’ve seen you. You have no trouble using a fork.”
She set his beer on the table. “Do you know how many calories are in those mashed potatoes? I’m not some macho athletic guy.”
Keith gave her an unapologetic smile. “I’d still be friends with you if you were.” He set down the food. “Stop worrying about it. You look fine.” He glanced at her. “As far as anyone can tell.”
She ignored that and refused to look down at her oversize tunic and baggy pants. “I like to be comfortable. Loose clothing allows me to move freely on the job.” She ducked back into the house to get the salad, then joined him at the table.
He’d already taken his usual seat and opened both to-go containers. The smell of fried chicken reminded her she hadn’t eaten since lunch, which felt like two days ago. Her stomach growled and her mouth watered.
Keith put a chicken breast on her plate, then handed her the mashed potatoes. She put slices of lime in both their beers. Their movements were familiar. Comfortable.
About the book...
The Baxter sisters come from a long line of women with disastrous luck in love. But this summer, Sunshine and Margot will turn disasters into destiny…
As an etiquette coach, Margot teaches her clients to fit in. But she’s never faced a client like Bianca, an aging movie star who gained fame—and notoriety—through a campaign of shock and awe. Schooling Bianca on the fine art of behaving like a proper diplomat’s wife requires intensive lessons, forcing Margot to move into the monastery turned mansion owned by the actress’s intensely private son. Like his incredible home, Alec’s stony exterior hides secret depths Margot would love to explore. But will he trust her enough to let her in?
Sunshine has always been the good-time sister, abandoning jobs to chase after guys who used her, then threw her away. No more. She refuses to be “that girl” again. This time, she’ll finish college, dedicate herself to her job as a nanny, and she 100 percent will not screw up her life again by falling for the wrong guy. Especially not the tempting single dad who also happens to be her boss.
Master storyteller Susan Mallery weaves threads of family drama, humor, romance and a wish-you-were-there setting into one of the most satisfying books of the year!
Honestly, from the moment I turned to page one and began reading, I was totally on board with this one, from story to character.  The sisters are so different, yet intensely connected. Though they share their family history, each of their stories is unique to them and just as enthralling.  They are alike in some fashions, but not in all...and that's okay! Fraternal twins or not, they are individuals! Seeing life from both their perspectives was entertaining, and so emotional.
Sunshine has always been able to attract the boys, and while that was fine in the moment, it led to some disastrous decisions, and quite frankly, she finally wants more than that. I couldn't have applauded her efforts any louder, nor laughed any harder at how she spurned some of the unwanted attention.  (You go girl!) I was really rooting for her to get all she wanted...and though it hurt to witness the fallout of her past making itself known in her present, it was a growth moment and she did well accepting it without letting it completely tear her down.  The moment things finally clicked for her, I was so happy I could burst because really, it could have went a completely different way and although we would have been happy, it wouldn't have been the same happy.  *ahem*  Sorry, not doing spoilers here...moving on...
Margot has always been ambitious and beautiful, just not in the way her grandmother would have wanted (beauty queen trainer...and Margot had a penchant for projectile vomiting in public speaking situations), but even she needs a break from her past...DESPERATELY...with it, time to perhaps fall for someone new.  That's right, the beautiful yet somehow unapproachable sister has a stalker of sorts, or in this case a boyfriend that isn't good for her, to her, or does anything complimentary to her sense of being...yet still keeps showing up like a bad penny...and love being blind, Margot made her own bad decisions when it came to him.  Seeing her let her hair down , figuratively and literally, was refreshing, and again, despite the pitfalls of her current job, I couldn't have been more pleased with the outcome of things on a professional and personal level.  She deserved a shot at true happiness, and well....you'll see how that comes to pass.
Image result for garden of hearts
In the end, it was such a good story! I adored the sisters, the potential love interests (LOVE!), Bianca (what a hoot!), Connor (such a sweetie), and the rest of the bit players too! While a great summer read to pass the sunny days, it has so much more depth to it as well.  It's about growing up, or rather into the person we want to be, accepting our past, and looking forward to tomorrow. It's about letting love in, and giving second chances when deserved.    It's about not settling for less than we deserve, striving for our dreams, and not being afraid to ask for help in achieving them.  Really and truly, it's cemented its way into being one of my favorites of this author's lengthy published title list...and I couldn't be happier for it.
