About the book...
"A mother is just a woman who gave birth to you. You don’t need her to like you, or love you. Because a mother’s just another person.
She was. And now she’s dead.”
Growing up, Rae played the good girl, hoping to win her mother Marlene’s love. But Marlene favored Rae’s dangerous older brother Thomas, even after he nearly got teenage Rae killed. The night Thomas disappeared was the best night of Rae’s life.
Now 28 years old and engaged, Rae is nursing Marlene, who has advanced cancer and one last request: for Rae to find Thomas and bring him home.
Thomas purports to be a changed man, the CEO of his own meteorically successful company. But Rae knows he’s hiding something. When Marlene takes a turn for the worse, is it assisted suicide or murder?
The answer goes back decades, through secrets and pain, and comes back full circle. Rae has to figure out who she can really trust. Or else.
Poor little good girl . . . who’ll save her now?

RAE
Right Now

My mother is dead.
The worsening of her illness was inexorable, and this ending inevitable. Hospice workers have been coming to the house for weeks—palliative measures only, the relief of suffering without treatment, comfort without cure. They were very clear on this point. There should have been no room for denial.
But somehow, when it’s your mother, you deny until the end.
It’s not like a dance recital, and you can practice, practice, practice. There is no preparation, not really. I’ve never lived in a world without her. Marlene Joy Kalatchik. Mom. Mommy.
No one else has ever leveled me with a look like she could; no one else could affirm or destroy like my mother. She was the repository for all my insecurities. She fed them, unknowingly. I like to think unknowingly. Simon says otherwise, but he first met her a year ago, and given the cancer, she wasn’t herself. Not exactly.
My mother is dead.
I say it out loud, experimentally, full of wonder as much as pain. Impossible. I whisper it. I touch my tongue to it, like it’s a loose tooth.
Simon is beside me, and he’s got his arm around me, he’s murmuring something, but I can’t seem to hear it. I can’t feel him. There’s nothing but her, nothing but absence and loss and something else, just out of sight, just beyond my reach.
Natural causes. I think that’s what the coroner will say, even if it was by her own hand. A hand that was coerced by someone else, or a hand that’s an extension of hers, because isn’t that what family is? An extension. A proxy. A way to go on.
Thomas is staring down at her, too, his expression inscrutable. No, it’s not her. Already, it’s her body.
He shouldn’t be here. Why didn’t he just stay gone?
I wish I’d said no, I won’t find him, let the past be the past, it’s just us now, Mom, and that’s enough. I should have tried harder to convince her that I’m enough, though that had already been a lifelong project, a study in futility and false hope. I’ve been flexing my denial muscle for a long time. And yet…
I think I see Thomas and Simon exchange some sort of look. I’ve seen that look before. There’s mischief in it. No, mirth. No, it’s the satisfaction of collusion. Like they’re in it together.
No. Simon’s here for me, and Thomas is here for himself, just like always. Simon’s mine.
And if I’m wrong about that? Then what do I have?
My mother is dead.
My mother’s body is dead. Her spirit? Does that continue?
It must. Because suddenly, I feel it here. I feel her, like radiant heat whooshing up from the floorboards, filling the room. She’s always been larger than life, in my eyes. Illness couldn’t shrink her. Maybe death can’t, either.
We were closer in those last days. She told me something I’d waited my whole life to hear, and now: She has a message for me. There are things I’ve never known, and I need to. I’ve always sensed them, the secrets, like movement in my peripheral vision. I could never turn my head quickly enough.
But she wants me to know now. It’s time.
I lean in close, and listen.

PRE-PUB PARTY: A Ghostly Grave by Tonya Kappes

Hi guys!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're welcoming the week by diving into the second release in Tonya Kappes' latest series, A Ghostly Southern Mystery.  As with the first installment, you're in for murder, mystery, laughs, and a little love all centering around the death of one....Chicken Teater.  *blink*  Yep.  That's his name alright.  Let's read about the book, then I'll fill you in on the details.  Today's book of choice is....

A Ghostly Southern Mystery, Book 2
by
Tonya Kappes

About the book...

There's a ghost on the loose—and a fox in the henhouse.

Four years ago, the Eternal Slumber Funeral Home put Chicken Teater in the ground. Now undertaker Emma Lee Raines is digging him back up. The whole scene is bad for business, especially with her granny running for mayor and a big festival setting up in town. But ever since Emma Lee started seeing ghosts, Chicken's been pestering her to figure out who killed him.

With her handsome boyfriend, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, busy getting new forensics on the old corpse, Emma Lee has time to look into her first suspect. Chicken's widow may be a former Miss Kentucky, but the love of his life was another beauty queen: Lady Cluckington, his prize-winning hen. Was Mrs. Teater the jealous type? Chicken seems to think so. Something's definitely rotten in Sleepy Hollow—and Emma Lee just prays it's not her luck.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh my word!
The little town of Sleepy Hollow is certainly ANYTHING but sleepy here recently, and that's without the dearly departed putting their two cents in.  This time around, Chicken Teater is in need of Ms. Emma Lee Raines' services but if you think it's going to be a walk in the park, think again.  If you read book one, you know that Emma Lee has had to deal with cantankerous spirits before but this one has a one track mind and it's all about the chicken.  No, not him as in "Chicken" but the fowl, or rather the prize winning Lady Cluckington.  He doted on this chick to the extent of her being the only other soul to ride in his fancy smancy convertible, at least until he up and kicked the bucket.  It was proclaimed a natural death due to illness, but with Chicken unable to rest, something is amiss and Emma Lee is just about the only one with her head on straight enough to figure things out.
Why would I insult the other parties involved like that?  Oh well, let's see here...Granny is running for mayor while almost running fellow citizens over with her moped.  Then there's the widow Mrs. Teater who shows one face to the world and another more pageantry one to Duckie (the woman does have some affection for men named after birds).  Emma Lee gets caught up in the hubbub while trying to uncover clues, pretty much getting her feathers plucked in the process (think hair dye, extreme plumage, and coaching from a former beauty queen with ill intentions), and coming close to losing her head.  The Sheriff that's stolen her heart is the only thing between her and an untimely end.  Here's hoping he gets there in time....
*gulp*
The writing is consistent with the last book, while the plot walks the same course as the first release.  Character wise, we're getting to know the residents of Sleepy Hollow more and skeletons are emerging from closets that we knew not existed.  Does it work?  Yes indeed!  You'll laugh as Emma Lee tries to walk the line between sane-average-girl and the In-Betweener that she's become, in high heels and a feathered dress no less!  The action picks up towards book's end with a surprising twist you won't see coming.  Recommended read for Mystery fans who love a little laugh, humor, and a paranormal twist in their reads.  I for one will be keeping an eye out for the next release with a spot on the wish list ready and waiting.
PRE-PUB PARTY: A Ghostly Undertaking by Tonya Kappes
Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're taking a look at the first installment of a new Mystery series from Witness Impulse, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, that's getting ready to hit bookstore shelves later this month.  What's that?  An actual ADVANCE review?  Hey, no one likes a smarty pants.  (^-^) Anywho, before the witching hour draws near allow me to introduce today's book of choice and wish list candidate...
About the book...
A funeral, a ghost, a murder . . . It's all in a day's work for Emma Lee Raines . . .
Bopped on the head from a falling plastic Santa, local undertaker Emma Lee Raines is told she's suffering from “funeral trauma.” It's trauma all right, because the not-so-dearly departed keep talking to her. Take Ruthie Sue Payne—innkeeper, gossip queen, and arch-nemesis of Emma Lee's granny—she's adamant that she didn't just fall down those stairs. She was pushed.
Ruthie has no idea who wanted her pushing up daisies. All she knows is that she can't cross over until the matter is laid to eternal rest. In the land of the living, Emma Lee's high-school crush, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, isn't ready to rule out foul play. Granny Raines, the widow of Ruthie's ex-husband and co-owner of the Sleepy Hollow Inn, is the prime suspect. Now Emma Lee is stuck playing detective or risk being haunted forever.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Okay, so for those that have been frequent visitors of my site, you'll know that this is actually a more rare genre choice for me.  I do read mysteries, but a bit more seldom than other categories simply because the cozy ones are often too forward with the who, what, where, and why of it all, leaving me with all the answers and nothing to look forward to.  This one?  Definitely not a case in point.

Emma Lee is a hoot and a half...and that's BEFORE she becomes unwisely inebriated while out with the local heartthrob of a Sheriff (Jack Henry).  *ahem*  She feels like the black sheep of the family, much preferring to handle the behind the scenes work and prep of the funeral home she and her sister run.  All of that changes when she's touched with a case of "funeral trauma"...for the worst.  I mean really, seeing and talking to ghosts was suppose to BOOST your social life, right?  Or was that conversing and mingling with the living?  *ponders* Push comes to shove and well actually because of a potential shove, Emma Lee is forced to deal with her new found "talent" because quite frankly if she doesn't, the recently departed Ruthie Sue Payne will not leave her ever loving soul alone.

The antics, the conversations, the doubts of her sanity both from within and outside...they all add up to a story with character that'll have you stuck to the page like a stray cat to a can of tuna. Whether friend or foe, the characters are memorable.  The story ties things up rather nicely by book's end while leaving you prepped for the next installment in the series.  My only complaint is that we never find out who or why Ruthie Sue's clothes were changed.  Sounds like an odd question but if someone died in pink pajamas and bunny slippers only to walk the after life in something a bit more chic (not to mention it IS brought up in the story when trying to solve the murder), you gotta ask....though in this case we're left with suppositions (my bets on Granny Raines!).

In conclusion, a wonderful start to a promising series.  It combines the humor and warmth often found in Women's Fiction or Chick Lit with a murder most foul that needs solving STAT!  The paranormal aspect works well with all things considered and though a big part of the story, it doesn't overshadow the actual plotline.  The ARC for book 2 (A Ghostly Grave) arrived on my doorstep with this one, so be prepared for another dose of Ghostly Southern Mysteries in the coming days.

Synopsis:

The warmth of him, the glorious warmth, was fading by the minute.
In a huge old school house by the sea, full of precious paintings, Thomas Porteous is dying. His much younger wife Di holds him and mourns. She knows that soon, despite her being his sole inheritor, Thomas’s relatives will descend on the collection that was the passion of both of their lives.
And descend they do. The two needy daughters, who were poisoned against their father by their defecting mother, are now poison themselves. The family regard Thomas’s wealth as theirs by right, with the exception of young Patrick, who adored his grandfather and is torn between his parents and Di, the interloper.
The family know Di’s weaknesses, and she has to learn theirs. After all, she met Thomas when she came to his house to rob him. With the help of an unlikely collection of loners and eccentrics, she sets a trap to hoist the family members on their own greed. And on the night they are lured to the house, Di will be ready.
Or will she?

Ooh...I don't know about you but I'm curious to see how this one plays out.  So many ulterior motives running a muck and yet the one that could possibly set it all straight is simply a shell of their former self.  Isn't it funny how loss can bring out the best AND worst in people?  Well, perhaps funny isn't the right term, but you KNOW what I mean....

Anywho, if you're as curious as I, then you're going to love this next part....an EXCERPT!
Far be it from me to keep you from reading....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Read an excerpt:
'Come on Thomas, come upstairs and look at the view,' Di said. 'Look at the clouds."
She hugged him closer.
‘I’ll keep you warm,” she said. “Will you come with me? There’s this painting I want you to see. Thomas?”
The warmth of him, the glorious warmth was fading by the minute. She was sitting in his lap with her arms around him, cradling his head with its shock of thick white hair, talking into it, nuzzling it like a cat. She stroked his profile, a beak of a nose, the handsome, furrowed forehead suddenly smoothed and by that token, the very lift of his face, she knew he was dead. She had known the imminence of his death from the moment he came in, gave her the flowers and then sat in the chair and closed his bright blue eyes: she had known it for months of illness, and all the same, when it happened, it was incomprehensible. Because he was still warm, and she was realizing, slowly, slowly, that most of the warmth came from her.
She told herself not to be silly. He would wake up in a minute, give her the smile that lit him like a light from within and then he would start to teach, talk in rhymes or sing. Such a voice he had, such a lovely voice with a light rhythm, as if there was a song already in it.
‘It’ll be alright, she said to him. ‘Won’t it, love?’
There was no answer. She continued to speak, stroking his hair, still thick, but so much thinner than it had been. She straightened it with her fingers and touched his ears. Cold, but then the lobes of his ears were always cold, even when she breathed close.
‘A word in your shell-like, darling,’ she said, softly. ‘Do you know, you look just like a bird? All beak and chin, that’s you, not an ounce to spare. You’ve been on the wing long enough, you’re just tired, you are. You know what? That’s good. You’ve lost your voice, that’s all. But you can still hear, so you’ll know I’ll never say a bad thing about you, ever, because there’s nothing bad to say, and I don’t tell anyone anything ever. Any secret’s good with me. You know me, I’m good for that. Can’t talk, can’t tell secrets, except about what a good man you are. Mustn’t swear, you said, a waste of words, innit? Ok, Thomas? Shall we go upstairs and look at the view?
He lay, sprawled and twisted, his arm holding her because she had curled herself into him, and he made no response. She began to cry, soaking his jumper. Then she got up and bound his knees with a blanket to keep him warm, backed away from him, got a drink and moved, lurching around her own house like a crippled ghost.
Author Bio:
"I grew up in rural Derbyshire, but my adult life has been spent mostly in London, with long intervals in Norfolk and Deal, all inspiring places. I was educated mostly in convent schools; then studied English and went on to qualify as a solicitor, working for what is now the Crown Prosecution Service, thus learning a bit about murder at second hand. Years later, writing became the real vocation, although the law and its ramifications still haunt me and inform many of my novels.
I’m a novelist, short story writer for magazines and radio, sometime Radio 4 contributor, (Front Row, Quote Unquote, Night Waves,) and presenter of Tales from the Stave. When I’m not working (which is as often as possible), I can be found in the nearest junk/charity shop or auction, looking for the kind of paintings which enhance my life. Otherwise, with a bit of luck, I’m relaxing by the sea with a bottle of wine and a friend or two."-Frances Fyfield
INTERVIEW: Author Nancy Allen, THE CODE OF THE HILLS
Hi there!
Welcome back to the site that aims to please the reader in you with bookish fun at every turn (even of the digital page)....Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're shining the spotlight on a recently released eBook title courtesy of Witness Impulse, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishing.  Thanks to Andrea, an amazing member of their team, I have the chance to bring the EBOOK BIRTHDAY celebration to YOU, with a little something more.  First things first, let's get to that "about the book" section!  Today's featured title is....
The Code of the Hills,
An Ozarks Mystery
by
Nancy Allen
Witness Impulse
About the book...
To uncover the truth, she'll have to break the code of the hills …
In the Missouri Ozarks, some things aren't talked about … even abuse. But prosecutor Elsie Arnold is determined to change that.
When she is assigned to prosecute a high-profile incest case in which a father is accused of abusing his three young daughters, Elsie is ready to become the Ozarks' avenging angel.
But as Elsie sinks her teeth into the case, everything begins to turn sour. The star witness goes missing; the girls refuse to talk about their father, who terrorizes the courtroom from the moment he enters; and Elsie begins to suspect that their tough-as-nails mother has ulterior motives. To make matters worse, Elsie receives gruesome threats from local extremists, warning her to mind her own business.
While Elsie swears not to let a sex offender walk, she realizes the odds—and maybe the town—are against her, and her life begins to crumble. But amidst all of the conflict, the safety of three young girls hangs in the balance ...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Scary, frightening and disturbing all in one, right?
Yeah, I hear ya.  Gave my stomach a turn.
Curiosity also raised it's head though.
I mean, haven't you wondered how stories like this are born?
So, with that vein in mind and the opportunity presenting itself,
I went straight to the source.

That's right!
I scored an AUTHOR INTERVIEW and asked the...
...well, okay, not the HARD questions, but some good ones
at that.  Don't believe me?  Read it for yourself!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTERVIEW:  Author Nancy Allen
As the world runs at the speed of light, our free time gets shorter and our attention spans all but disappear.  For those that like to get a feel for a book at a glance, DESCRIBE YOUR BOOK IN 20 WORDS OR LESS....and GO!
A: THE CODE OF THE HILLS is a “hillbilly noir” legal thriller set in the Ozarks, about an incest prosecution.
This is your debut novel...congratulations! Curious minds want to know though, why such a HEAVY topic for your first bout into the writing world, considering it was inspired by your own experiences?
A: In the Ozarks hill country, there’s a long tradition of “the code of the hills.” It has been described as an unwritten law that permits a man to do what he wants with his land and his family, without outside interference. And it decrees a code of silence. People aren’t supposed to speak to outsiders about the things that happen within the family circle. As a prosecutor in the Ozarks, I had to break through that wall of silence and secrecy when I handled cases of incest and sexual abuse.
When I returned to my home town in the Ozarks after law school and went to work as assistant prosecutor, I was the only woman on the staff—and the second woman in all of Southwest Missouri to serve as prosecutor. They assigned me an unprecedented number of sex cases, because I was female. So as a trial lawyer, I cut my teeth on incest—of which we have a fair amount in the Ozarks. Greene County, Missouri, where I have always lived, has the highest rate of sexual abuse in the state; and Missouri has the 5th highest rate of that crime in the nation. I thought at the time that I should write a book, showing what sex case prosecution is like from an insider’s perspective. It took me thirty years to get the job done.
Any characters that wouldn't leave you be during the creative process? You know, the ones that simply MUST have their story shared?
A: The character of Charlene Taney, the eldest of the crime victims, continued to grow. I kept writing more “Charlene scenes” and developing the character. Charlene demanded more attention; she wanted her story told.
What's next for Elsie...assuming she makes it through the case and avoids the death threats?
A: Elsie will be still be in the Missouri Ozarks, working hard at the McCown County Prosecutor’s Office. But she’s wrangling with a new case, with plenty of surprises to test her mettle.
Quid pro quo....
....favorite color?  A: Sky Blue
....favorite food?  A: Chocolate birthday cake and vanilla ice cream. It’s okay if some melted candle wax is stuck in the icing. I’ll pick it off.
....favorite song?  A. So many to choose from! How about “Whiskey Lullaby” with Brad Paisley & Allison Kraus?
....favorite author (as in you will read pretty much whatever they put out)?  A: Easy! Hank Phillippi Ryan! She’s my favorite “can’t put it down” author.
....your last book read?  A: Shadows on the Mirror, by Frances Fyfield. Loved her Sarah Fortune character—fascinating! I am planning to spend the summer catching up on Fyfield reads.
If I wasn't an author, I would have been....
A: Well, that’s kinda funny. Because I have emerged as an author with many professional years behind me. So: I have been a trial lawyer; a teacher; a public servant in the Mo Attorney General’s Office and Greene County Prosecutor’s Office, a wife and mother. It’s easier to think of things I’ll never be: a Vegas showgirl, a movie star, a model (that ship has sailed, friends).
When not penning the next big thing, I can be found....
A: Teaching my law classes at Missouri State University; doing laundry; letting the dog and cat in and out the various doors of my home.
Something I wish I knew then that I know now....
A: My mother was right. About just about everything.
Advice to future authors in the reading audience....
A: You must be immune to discouragement. Believe in your book; keep making it better. And when you’re knocked down, stand back up and dust yourself off. Then go out and pitch it again.
