LOVE IS THE ANSWER by Ben Craib - REVIEW!

Hi guys and gals!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

You may have noticed a little break in the posts here on my site; no worries, I'm not going anywhere.  No, I simply scheduled a little lighter with a bit more time between things this month and next with the holidays coming, and seeing as I work in retail, the you-know-what is about to hit the fan in terms of busyness.  I'm actually glad I factored a bit of time in because I've been feeling a bit pressed recently and having the time to slow down and read a book versus beat a deadline is remarkably refreshing for the soul.  Seriously, bloggers...you should try it some time!  Anywho, speaking of revelations, let's focus in on today's title in the spotlight.

It's a Young Adult Contemporary Romance that released UK side this past July from a new to me author, with a title beautifully stated, and cover art that is a perfect fit.  It's one of those titles that can be interpreted in many ways, all depending upon how you look at it and where you are in life.  It can be bright and gloriously romantic, dark and tearfully woe filled, or somewhere more deep and mystical.  Here, it takes several turns, as does the life of our leading lady, so let's get between the pages and discover more beyond the cover of today's book of choice...

About the book...
Scarlett's lost a lot. Her mother, dead from cancer. Her friends, who have no idea what to say. And now her Dad, who has found someone new. Then, on a park bench on a cold and windy evening, she discovers Hayden. Hayden is the life and soul. He makes her laugh and he sees her pain. She dives into his life - heaving parties, sweaty raves ... and worse. The only thing that matters now is him and her: but all is not as it seems. Scarlett embarks on a long and difficult emotional journey ...

Is love the answer or the question?
Sometimes it can be both, and while that may sound muddled beyond belief, that's what love can do.  It can lift you to the highest of highs, and bring you to the lowest of lows.  No matter if it's your first time, fifth time, or last time, love takes no prisoners.  It can open up a world of magic, and beauty, but it can also leave you lying on the ground wondering just what happened along the way.  Such is the tale of our gal, Scarlett....

She was lost when she didn't realize she was lost, and understandably so.  She never really dealt with the loss of her mother, nor did her father for that matter, and all those feelings, all those unanswered questions, and unrealized futures built up in the dark corners of her mind and heart.  The thing about grief is it can works its way out when we least expect it.  It can smooth over those rough edges we might have otherwise seen, make us blind to red flags that were raised, and if you add in an unexpected dose of love, well then, the sky is the limit on the damage it can do.  But in the moment, when all that sparkles and shines and glitters like gold, it looks like beauty beyond compare, it feels like a breath of the freshest air, and that freedom from the lingering darkness can be such an awakening, you'd do anything, be with anyone, go anywhere to keep ahold of it.  Scarlett may have lost her mother, but she ends up losing herself, and while those that love her try to pull her back in, they too have their own issues to deal with, making that return to self more out of reach.

Her journey through this new world filled with love, wild times, endless nights, and partying with friends was eye opening.  It showed a young woman's struggle as she came of age without the support system she expected.  It revealed just how far down the rabbit hole most will go for love.  It acted as a mirror for the poor choices we make in the name of love, when really all we need is to stop, take a breath, and really listen to our hearts.  I felt for Scarlett as life raved out of control.  It wasn't a fun time seeing it built like a card house around her, just waiting for the inevitable gust of wind to blow it all down, but it was immersive.  You could feel the strength of her feelings, the bonds she made, the things she experienced.   You rode the highs and the lows, and made it through the dark while still holding her hand.  It may have shown how far things can go down, but it also reminded us that it's never too late to change, to come back to ourselves, to rebuild what we thought we lost into something bigger, better, and simply...US.

by
Kate Rigby

About the book...
A hard-hitting novel based on the author's experience of working in the field of addictions.

It's the late 1980s and mother of four, Cheryl West, lands herself a job at a drugs project in London. But memories of her old life are never far away, especially when her surly daughter, Elaine, makes her unwelcome visits.

Meanwhile, Cheryl's estranged son, Michael aka Dodo - is ironically having his life destroyed by drug addiction in his attempt to avoid painful memories of abuse. He goes from one chaotic situation to another, ending up on the streets and reaching rock bottom, until he is referred to a drug rehabilitation centre in rural Hampshire where dark family secrets are uncovered.

They're each on a journey, but can there be reconciliation as well as rehabilitation?

The Fifteenth of June by Brent Jones

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

So, here we are.  It's the FIFTEENTH OF JUNE and we're ready to take a stroll through the pages of yet another book.  I wonder what we might discover today?  After all, the future is as of yet unwritten and the possibilities are endless, two things that our leading man will learn (eventually) in spades.  So, what are we reviewing today?  Why, it's simple...a book that shares its title with the very day that it is.  Ready or not, today's book of choice is on deck...

About the book...
Can we lose a loved one without losing ourselves?

Twenty-eight-year-old Drew Thomson is haunted by a troubled past. After struggling for years with alcoholism and antisocial behavior, he ends a stable relationship with his girlfriend and finds himself without a home, job, or purpose.

Just as he learns that his father is terminally ill, he meets a stranger who offers him a flicker of hope for a better future. But is he ready to bury the past?

Rich with dark humor and a keen insight into the human condition, this debut fictional release from author Brent Jones delves into life’s most pressing trials—destructive relationships, love, loss, and pursuing happiness.

Well now, that was... interesting.
Honestly, I can't say much in favor of Drew, though I get the gist of his story.  We begin with a father cut down by fate, that succumbs to his own demons (literally and figuratively), while attempting to guide his sons in the ways of life...not exactly a recipe for success.  One son turns out alright by most standards but is an utter disappointment to his old man (for reasons I won't disclose...you'll have to uncover them on your own), while the other he's as proud, well...as proud as he could be.  Yep, Drew is a spitting image of his father and we're not talking looks...but give it a few years, I bet he would become his double there too...and that was fine by him, to a point.  Once he finally hits the wall of what-has-become-of-my-life-and-why-is-my-father-the-way-he-is, he hits rock bottom....but as they say, the only way to go from there is up.  Though generally one to sit and let life pass him by, he's met a force that won't be pushed aside...and her name is Sierra.  She's a breath of fresh air in a drug and haze filled room....something he sorely needed in the worst way...but will it be enough for him to truly see the light?

Drew is nothing less than a seriously flawed character, but he also reminds us that redemption, whether to ourselves or in the eyes of others, is merely a series of choices away.  We need only choose the path left of self-destruction, and right of going-it-alone, because there's nothing wrong with asking for help.  Everyone needs a shoulder to lean on, an ear to bend, and heck, even a drinking buddy now and then, but it's in the moderation of those things (and avoidance of illegal substances) that our character is built.  Drew had enablers and stabilizers, but it took staring a version of death in the face for him to see that maybe things could be better without the drug induced hazes (surprised he could ever walk a straight), liver crushing binges (so much drinking!), and wallowing in self-pity.

Recommended read for adult readers due to language, content, and "extracurricular activities", but all in all, it carried the paper soul of our leading man to a brighter tomorrow...and who couldn't use a message of hope in today's day and age, even if it is whiskey flavored?

About the author...

Brent Jones

From bad checks to bathroom graffiti, Brent Jones has always been drawn to writing. He won a national creative writing competition at the age of fourteen, although he can’t recall what the story was about. Seventeen years later, he gave up his freelance career as a social media manager to pursue creative writing full-time. The Fifteenth of June is his debut novel.

Jones is working on his sophomore release from his home in Fort Erie, Canada. He’s a bearded cyclist, a mediocre guitarist, (mostly) vegetarian, the proud owner of two dogs with a God complex, and a devoted “Instagram husband.”
